THE CANTILEVER

A project with an emphasis on the rigidity of the structural design creates a challenge in creating viewing platforms through incorporating different structural elements. The form of the cantilever directs the circulation as it moves up to different viewing platforms providing different viewing experiences. The wood screens implemented control the amount of light that enters through the spaces.

The project is located on a sloped intersection in Downtown Los Angeles, California. The interstitial spaces are composed from adding and subtracting some sphere and cylindrical elements into a bounded box. The building also has a contrasting relationship with the site as the roof is angled the opposite way and gets lifted up by supporting columns. The circular pattern on the facade helps control the sunlight during the day while it shines during the night.

The observation tower originates from a trapesium module which gets flipped around to direct circulation up towards the final viewpoint as the staircase wraps around the core of the tower. The wood screens implied plays around with the shadows that come inside the platforms and focus the view up, in, and out the tower.

A digital project which focuses in enhancing architectural graphic skills requires creating a complex abstracted model that would then be produced through different graphic representations and a physical model. The complex model continues to explore different spatial experiences and architectural graphic methods such as the isonometric and the interior elevation drawings.

The project was explored through designing the landscape of the site in consideration of the circulation and the organization of spaces. It derives originally from a triangle that is being constructed uniquely based on its purpose in the music festival. The language is mantained throughout to truly convey the main concept of the sharp angles which can be redirected to creating different forms.

The project utilizes structural elements as a way to create forms. The diagonal truss system becomes a pivotal element as it also shapes the interstitial space. The organization of window openings creates directionality of the viewing platforms. The use of fabric component filters the light that comes in the spaces as well as contrasting the heavy wood member as a light material.

A research center located in Mount Vetter that serves both for astronomers as well as a public education center. The project derives from a form that imitates the existing site of the mountain peaks. The varying experience in ceiling heights enhances the views it captures. A ramp is integrated to make the whole experience accessible up towards the summit. The ramp itself has a contrast relationship with the landscape creating a zigzag pattern.
