SCIENTIST RETREAT T H I RD Y E A R S T UD IO | FAL L 2020 | ROB ERT O S HEINB ERG

A research center located in Mount Vetter that serves both for astronomers as well as a public education center. The project derives from a form that imitates the existing site of the mountain peaks. The varying experience in ceiling heights enhances the views it captures. A ramp is integrated to make the whole experience accessible up towards the summit. The ramp itself has a contrast relationship with the landscape creating a zigzag pattern.

THE BRIDGE

The project utilizes structural elements as a way to create forms. The diagonal truss system becomes a pivotal element as it also shapes the interstitial space. The organization of window openings creates directionality of the viewing platforms. The use of fabric component filters the light that comes in the spaces as well as contrasting the heavy wood member as a light material.

MIXED-USE DESIGN T H I RD Y E A R S T U DIO | S PRING 2021 | JOHN B OHN

The concept originated from the checkered box idea that translates to how some of the spaces get protruded and some get carved out. It uses the terracing strategy as a way to break down the scale of the building to show sensitivity to the surrounding context. This strategy results in semi-private outdoor spaces that can be shared between the units.

A digital project which focuses in enhancing architectural graphic skills requires creating a complex abstracted model that would then be produced through different graphic representations and a physical model. The complex model continues to explore different spatial experiences and architectural graphic methods such as the isonometric and the interior elevation drawings.

THE CANTILEVER

T H I RD Y E A R S T UD IO | FAL L 2020 | ROB ERT O S HEINB ERG

A project with an emphasis on the rigidity of the structural design creates a challenge in creating viewing platforms through incorporating different structural elements. The form of the cantilever directs the circulation as it moves up to different viewing platforms providing different viewing experiences. The wood screens implemented control the amount of light that enters through the spaces.

As a part of the master plan of a medical campus, this project focuses on accommodating the efficiency of the patient and staff circulation by seperating their pathways. It is welcomed by a curved waiting area as a way to respond to the master site plan and to shape the patients’ experience. The waiting area also has a tall roof as a way to let natural light in. The interior incorporates colors to bring in nature inside to create a less clinical experience.
