Every one knows the story of Hansel and Gretel, where the witch is described as a horrible ,ugly monster, intent on consuming human treats, but they have the story all wrong. The Brothers Grimm wanted to sell a lot of books, and in order to do so, they tended to bend the truth. This is the true story.
Once upon a time, there was a witch named Gwen Merriweather. While many witches are evil, Gwen was very kind. Gwen spent a lot of time alone, and because she lived in the forest her only friends were animals. She loved baking and to pass the time she made desserts. “Come my animal friends, I have fresh bread” Gwen said. “Peep peep! Guauguau! Grrr” the animals replied. The animals loved Gwen because she gave them food and put a spell on the forest to protect them from hunters. Gwen even built her house out of gingerbread and desserts, so the animals could eat while she was away. The House was magnificent, a door of biscuits, a pool filled with hot cholcolate, sugar windows, a garden of licorice, and the ceiling was covered with marshmallows and whipped cream. The House was beautiful, but only the animals could see the beauty, up until... Hansel and Gretel.
Hansel and Gretel were a rotten duo. Hansel was the brother and Gretel the sister. They lived in a small cottage with their father, a kindhearted old woodcutter. Although the father was caring and patient, Hansel and Gretel were selfish and greedy.
Day in and day out, the children demanded their father give them desserts for every meal. “More cookies now!” shouted Gretel. “Faster old man!” Hansel cried. Distressed the father cried, “I have no more desserts, And no more money to buy you expensive sweets, all I have left is a small loaf of bread. “Give it to me!” Hansel shouted, ripping the bread from his father. “Listen here,” Gretel whispered to her brother, “I know of bakery in the forest full of cakes and treats we can steal!” “I have an idea, we can use this ugly bread to find our way back.” And so the children left, leaving a path of bread crumbs behind.
In only a few hours the children were very lost. “I don’t know where we are, I don’t know this part of the forest” Hansel grumbled. “Well it’s a good thing you left a trail of breadcrumbs,” Gretel said. Looking behind him, Hansel cried,“The crumbs are not here!” The animals had eaten all crumbs! They thought that Gwen head left the bread.
Three weeks passed and the children were skinny. “I’m hungry,” Gretel said. And she began to cry. Squinting in the distance, Hansel exclaimed, “Look, I see a House of desserts! It’s a miracle!” Hansel was talking about Gwen’s gingerbread house. The children ran and began eatting the House like wild animals. When Gwen heard the children she stepped outside. “Who are you?” “My name is Hansel and this is Gretel, my sister. We have lost our way, and we’re very hungry.” “Oh poor babies! You can stay here, and spend the night,” Gwen said. A night passed, and then five nights, and then twenty nights. But the children didn’t want to leave. And every day the kids grew fatter and fatter gorging themselves on Gwen’s cakes and puddings. One day, concerned about Hansel and Gretel, Gwen said, “Your father is probably worried about you, tomorrow I will get the broom and fly you back to your house.”
The children were not happy. They liked eating all the desserts they could imagine. At Gwen’s house they ate and did whatever they wanted. “There’s no way they we’re going back to living with that old man,” the children thought. And that night they hatched a planned to kill Gwen, steal her money, and live in her Ginger home forever. The next day Gwen prepared food for the flight. “Children, would you help me with bread?” “But I don’t know if the oven is hot enough. Help me check,” Hansel said. Gwen put her hand on the oven and said, “It seems that this hot enough to me.” “And the back of the oven?” Gretel asked. Gwen put her head and shoulders in the oven. Gretel pushed Gwen into the oven and closed the door. OW! OWWW! yelled Gwen, “Help! Can anybody hear me?!” “Nobody’s around to hear your cries!” Hansel cackled malignantly. It was then when the animals arrived. A deer opened the oven door and pulled Gwen out. Meanwhile, the squirrels, rabbits, foxes, and racoons chased Hansel and Gretel until they were out of the forest, never to be seen again. “Thank you my animal friends!” Gwen cried hugging the deer, “You have saved my life and rid me of thos wicked children” After the Hansel & Gretel incident, Gwen left the forest to be a chef ’s pastry shop in Paris. In Paris, she opened a popular bakery called the gingerbread house.
