WHEN DREAMS BECOME REALITY The origins of Yulong begin in China’s Inner Mongolia, on the arid grasslands surrounding the humble farming village of Shen Xi. A young boy with lofty dreams spends his days tending to his family’s herd of horses, marveling at and learning the value of their strength, attitude and stamina, their reverence and their status. As the boy moves to the city to begin building his empire and journeys through adulthood, his passion for the horse never wavers. A trip to England to experience European thoroughbred racing, followed by one to Australian shores, sparked a new dream in the Zhang family. One of quality, prestige, and global success. One inspired by the

strength, prosperity and harmony embodied by the Chinese dragon. One that reflected not only humble beginnings, but abundance and longevity. The Yulong vision was born. The Zhang family’s first property purchase in Australia under the Yulong banner was the 170-acre Yulong Park, which became a home for racehorse agistment. This was quickly followed by the purchase of the grand and historic 450-acre Limerick Lane, in Victoria’s thoroughbred heartland of Nagambie. Formally owned by racing identity Gerry Ryan, the reputable and well-developed broodmare farm provided the perfect base on which to develop a world class stallion facility, suitable for up to 14 stallions. Further surrounding farmland,

totalling a landhold of just over 3500 acres, has since been purchased, with each parcel chosen for its agricultural superiority and suitability for each particular element of Yulong’s services. Yulong Hillside was the former home of Mike Becker’s Independent Stallion Station and the first addition to the Yulong property expansion. Purchased in 2018 following Mike’s relocation to Diggers Rest, the 210-acre plot is home to the Yulong broodmare band. Purchased in May 2021 and adjacent to Hillside, Yulong Riverview provides an additional 270 acres of prime land for mare and foals.

The accumulation of fertile and impressive farmland forms only one part of the puzzle in the dream of running a successful and elite thoroughbred operation. The lands must be provisioned with quality stock who will benefit from what it has to offer. Yulong have begun assembling a broodmare band of exceptional quality, strategically purchased to support the Yulong stallions and ensure they have every chance of success at stud. The 320-strong band includes elite mares such as Hungry Heart’s dam Harlech, 14-time Group 1 winner Melody Belle, consistent Group 1 performer Gregers, dual Group 1-winning globe trotter Viddora, multiple Group performer Miss Sentimental, Group 2 Villiers Stakes winner Greysful Glamour and dual Group

3 winner Catch me. All these elite mares now call the sprawling fields of Yulong home. Extensive and state-of-the-art redevelopment across all the properties is currently underway. The enhancements provide Yulong horses with the highest quality facilities, ensuring optimum wellbeing and opportunity for success. The Yulong architecture takes inspiration from many of the North American thoroughbred studs. Spacious wood-lined barns with high, vaulted ceilings provide a cool and safe environment for the stallions and their visiting mares. Untiring staff tend to the beautiful surrounding gardens with a touch that is both caring and of military precision.

Yulong’s most recent land procurement has been the famed 946-acre Chatsworth Park. Originally owned by 1891 Melbourne Cupwinning trainer James Redfearn, the property is highlighted by the English Tudor-style manor built in 1932. Seeped in thoroughbred racing history, Melbourne Cup winners Tarcoola and Malvolio were both born, raised, retired and buried on the property, whilst prominent VRC Chairman, L.K.S Mackinnon, after whom the prestigious Group 1 Mackinnon Stakes is named, was also a one-time owner of the Park.

Continued

Chatsworth Park has maintained a strong connection with the Victorian racing industry, having been owned by the prominent Bayles family since 1948, of which former Victoria Racing Club CEO Amanda Elliott is a part. Primarily used as a sheep and cattle farm, considerable redevelopment and re-fencing is already underway to make it more suitable to the thoroughbred breeding requirements of Yulong and is set for completion in early 2023. Bordering the Goulburn River and Hughes Creek, all of Yulong’s farmland consists of the rich Tabilk loam soils and ample water access the area is known for in farming circles, providing healthy and lush pastures for livestock. The enthusiasm for the development and expansion of Yulong’s Australian operations is enhanced by the fantastic results being achieved in the breeding barn and on the racetrack. Following negotiations with the Hunter Valley’s Arrowfield Stud,

AT YULONG,

Yulong secured the return of Australia’s Champion Sire, Written Tycoon, back to the Victorian breeding ranks. The progeny of foundation stallion Grunt were met with overwhelmingly positive feedback at this year’s yearling sales. Following on from his successful first season at stud, spring saw the exciting arrival of Alabama Express’ first foals and they are stacking up beautifully on type. Looking to fill the gap of his sire in Australia, Lucky Vega (Lope de Vega) has returned to Yulong in fantastic order following his highly anticipated and well-received first shuttle season to the Ireland. Also preparing to stand his second season at Yulong is the Group 1-winning son of Japan’s brilliant Lord Kanaloa, Tagaloa. The striking stallion has proven to be a popular choice for Australian breeders, providing a unique outcross for Danehill-line mares.

In a move based on business diversification, pasture regeneration and farming best practice, the Zhang family are now into their third year of a growing Wagyu cattle breeding program onsite. Focussing on a highquality herd, this program mirrors the blue chip thoroughbred enterprise that Yulong are fast developing a reputation for. The past 12 months has also seen Yulong continue to engage with the local community, welcoming many groups to the farm for tours and activities, as well as support of the industry through race and event sponsorship and participation in industry training programs through the provision of internship placement opportunities. The COVID-19 pandemic has certainly not dampened the Zhang family enthusiasm, spirit or determination to fulfil their vision of becoming a leader in this country’s breeding industry, proven through their continued long-term investment.

THE WRITING OF A TYCOON

Ask any Queenslander and they’ll tell you they breed them tough north of the border. Good times come and go, challenges are faced with a smile, and they get up every time they’re knocked down. As we reflect on the career of Written Tycoon, and the heights he has scaled to become Australia’s Champion Sire, it’s hard to disagree. It’s the first week of September 2002, the beginning of another drought-affected month in the Darling Downs region south-west of Brisbane. On the rolling plains of Jan Clark’s Daandine Pastoral, a chestnut foal with three white feet and long bright blaze is born. Presented by his breeders at the 2004 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, the unassuming colt caught the eye of trainer Grahame Begg, who secured him for $50,000. From a Sale where the average colt price was $70,207 and the overall top lot $813,645, Written Tycoon graduated alongside other soon-to-be elite performers Bradbury’s Luck, Snitzel, Virage De Fortune, Fashions Afield, Gonski, Danerich and Al Samer.

Written Tycoon is from the first crop of Last Tycoon stallion, Iglesia, a Group 2 Silver Slipper Stakes winner who broke the 1200m track record when winning the 2001 Group 3 Standish Handicap. His dam, Party Miss (Kenmare), was a four-time sprinting winner and ultimately produced five winners from her seven foals to race. Written Tycoon began as a two-year-old with a win on debut over 1100 metres at Randwick. He then finished second to Champion 2YO filly Fashions Afield, and beat Manton, Stratum and Media. At his third start, he won the Group 2 Todman Stakes against a small but stellar field before rounding out his campaign with a midfield finish in the Group 1 Golden Slipper Stakes. Having caught the eye of fellow trainer John O’Shea following his debut, Eskander Racing then bought into the colt. “We (Iskander Racing) had a few horses with John (O’Shea) and asked him to keep a look out for speedy types with stallion prospects,” Iskander’s former manager, Suman Hedge recalls.

“We had a couple of stallions at the time but were really looking for something with the x-factor and, after Written Tycoon’s debut, John came back and said the colt was one of the fastest he’d ever seen at Randwick.” In the spring of 2005, Written Tycoon resumed in the Group 2 San Domenico Stakes, finishing second to Media and beating home Snitzel and Stratum. Following his effort in the Group 2 Ascot Vale Stakes he suffered from a setback and wasn’t seen again until the following year. Now under the care of John O’Shea, Written Tycoon returned in the autumn, resuming in the Canterbury Stakes. In what was a strong listed event, he was beaten a length by multiple black-type winner Crimson Reign. Following a luckless spring, Written Tycoon retired to stud in 2007, standing at Victoria’s Eliza Park for $8,250. Having raced at the elite level against horses that would also continue to the breeding barn, he finished his racing career with two wins and three seconds from 11 starts.

To say it was a challenge to secure mares to him during those early times would be a massive understatement. “Eliza Park had to practically beg breeders. He wasn’t perfect in front and even a two-for-one deal with another Eliza Park stallion was getting knocked back,”said Suman. A Red Nose Day promotion, which saw Written Tycoon wearing a plastic red nose alongside charity ambassador Jo Silvagni, got attention in the mainstream media and the phone slowly started to ring. That first crop, in which he served 118 mares, produced 56 winners from 72 runners, with four individual stakes winners including Group Two winner Howmuchdoyouloveme, along side stakes winners Trump, It Is Written and Vibrant Rouge. From a sire many originally turned their back to, Written Tycoon would be crowned Australia’s Champion First Season Sire 2010/11.

Continued

Written Tycoon spent his first eight stud seasons never standing for a fee higher than $13,750. To resolve a partnership dispute, he was sold at the 2009 Inglis Great Southern Sale to David O’Callaghan for $625,000 on behalf of Eliza Park and Iskander Racing. He served one season in Queensland before returning to Victoria in 2013 for Woodside Park Stud following another, this time private, sale. His fee increased to $19,800 in 2015 where he also became the Leading 2YO Sire in 2015/16, before that fee more than doubled again and he was named Champion Victorian Sire for five consecutive seasons. Following 12 months in the Hunter Valley at Arrowfield Stud, Written Tycoon has now stood, and left his mark, in all three eastern states. In 2020, Written Tycoon became the first stallion in 44 years to sire the winner of both the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (Ole Kirk) and the Group 1 Thousand Guineas (Odeum). Ole Kirk became his first multiple Group 1-winning son, whilst mare Pippie soon followed suit. Alongside breed-shapers Redoute’s Choice and Danehill, Written Tycoon also achieved the feat of siring two colts to win the two richest Group 1 two-year-old features in Australia. Capitalist took out the 2016 Golden Slipper Stakes, while Written By claimed the 2018 Blue Diamond Stakes. These results have solidified Written Tycoon’s rapid rise to the top of the breeding ranks and Yulong are proud of their involvement with the Champion. “We’ve been shareholders in him for the last six years,”said Yulong Chief Operating Officer, Sam Fairgray. “Mr Zhang is very dedicated and committed to developing Yulong and providing Victorian breeders with access to some of the country’s best stallions, so when the opportunity to stand Written Tycoon for the rest of his career came up, we were very keen to pursue that.” Producing sprinter-miler types built for speed, Written Tycoon’s popularity shows no signs of slowing. His yearlings continue to be hot commodities in the sale ring and many sons are now forging their own stud careers, including Capitalist, Rich Enuff and Winning Rupert, while Banquo has become his first son to cross the Tasman to stand in New Zealand. It’s been an eventful story to now, and as he heads into his second season at Yulong it appears as if the next chapter to be written for this battle-hardened Tycoon from Queensland could be equally as telling.

by Iglesia - Party Miss, by Kenmare

Australia’s reigning Champion Sire, Written Tycoon stands his second season at Yulong in 2022, bringing proven star quality to an elite young roster. A winner of the Group 2 Todman Stakes, Written Tycoon continues to produce stakes winners year after year. Australia’s leading first season sire in 2010-11, and leading sire of two-year-olds in 2015-16, Written Tycoon has sired a total of 729 winners from 960 runners to date and continues to emerge as a sire of sires. His Group 1 Golden Slipper-winning son Capitalist is now a Group 1-producing sire, Written By, whose yearlings sold for up to $410,000 in 2022 and Ole Kirk, one of the most sought-after sires in the Hunter Valley, represent him at stud. He is the sire of 48 individual stakes winners while his standout progeny this season have delivered 14 stakes wins, including scintillating performances from elite fillies Coolangatta and Enthaar. During his first season at Yulong, he covered some of Australasia’s most prolific mares including 14-time Group 1 winner Melody Belle, top sprinters In Her Time and Viddora, Greysful Glamour, and elite juvenile Catch Me, amongst others. Written Tycoon’s yearlings continue to be hot commodities in the sale ring, averaging over $325,00 and selling for up to $1.4 million in 2022.

“Written Tycoon is one of Australia’s best stallions, it is an absolute privilege to welcome him back to Victoria, and have him join our roster at Yulong Stud.” Sam Fairgray, Yulong’s Chief Operating Officer.

TAGALOA Fee: $30,250 inc GST / 16.1hh Lord Kanaloa (JPN) X Vasilissa (JPN), by Heart’s Cry (JPN)

A two-year-old Group 1 winner by Japanese Horse of the Year, astounding sprinter and exceptional sire Lord Kanaloa (JPN), Tagaloa is set to stand his second season at stud for Yulong. A precocious winner at two, he was victorious in the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m), recording the fastest time by a two-year-old at Caulfield since 2011. It is a race won by the likes of Champion First Season Sire, Extreme Choice, in-demand sire Star Witness and prolific Champion, Redoute’s Choice. As a three-year-old he scored the Group 3 CF Hayes Stakes (1400m) to solidify a superb race career. Tagaloa proved popular with breeders in his first season at stud in 2021, covering a strong book of 148 mares including Group 1 winner Miss Sentimental, and Group winners Gregers, Neena Rock and Mamwaazel. Boasting precocity and an outstanding physical, he also offers the Australian breeder an international outcross pedigree.

“We loved the fact that Tagaloa was a brilliantly fast Group 1-winning 2YO. We had a young Commands mare who needed a Danehill free Stallion that was also a precocious racehorse, and he fitted the bill perfectly. We are excited by the Japanese blood and what they are doing down here, but he is a rare commodity - not only does he have the Japanese Blood but he’s also an elite Australian two-year-old Group 1 winner.” Dean Hawkins of Wentwood Grange, breeder of Group 1 winners Kermadec and Kolding.

ALABAMA EXPRESS - Fee: $22,000 inc GST | 16hh Redoute’s Choice X Lago Ovation, by Encosta De Lago

A magnificent son of Redoute’s Choice, Alabama Express was unbeaten at two and a WFA Group 1 winner at three. Resembling his exceptional sire in both looks and talent, he possesses all the attributes for the makings of a great sire. He became the first three-year-old to win the Group 1 C.F. Orr Stakes (1400m) since All Too Hard (2013), a race won twenty years previous by his own sire. Further adding to the momentous victory, in which he displayed tenacity and talent, he is the only three-year-old weight-for-age winning son of Redoute’s Choice to stand at stud in Australia. He follows a rich history of sire line descendants which include Not A Single Doubt, Extreme Choice, Snitzel, Shamus Award and Stratum. Like the exceptional sire Beneteau, he also hails from an Encosta de Lago mare. Entering his third season at stud, Alabama Express has been well-supported with a superb book of 141 mares in his first season and 99 in his second season. His first crop of foals hit the ground in 2021 and he has certainly stamped them as you’d expect from a son of Redoute’s Choice.

“Our particular mare’s family has a real affinity with Redoute’s Choice and Encosta de Lago. To have access to a G1 winning son of Redoute’s Choice that is out of an Encosta de Lago mare, he was the perfect match for her.” Leon Casey, Pencarrow Stud.

LUCKY VEGA (IRE) Fee: $19,250 | 15.3hh Lope de Vega (IRE) x Queen of Carthage {USA}, by Cape Cross (IRE) The first Group 1-winning son of the elite sprint sire Lope de Vega (IRE) to stand at stud in Australia, Lucky Vega enters his second season at stud in Yulong following a successful season at The Irish National Stud where he covered a full book of mares. At age two, Lucky Vega produced a convincing win on debut in Naas. Just 2 starts later he blitzed his rivals by 3.5 lengths in Ireland’s premier two-year-old race, the Group 1 Phoenix Stakes. In doing so he not only beat The Lir Jet who came off a solid Royal Ascot win having beaten America’s sprinting sensation, Golden Pal, but he also defeated the European Champion 2YO and subsequent World Champion 3YO in St Mark’s Basilica by 4.5L. Previous winners of the Group 1 Phoenix Stakes are breed-shapers Danehill Dancer and Johannesburg. On returning at three, Lucky Vega notched an impressive third in the first British Classic of the year, the Group 1 2000 Guineas at Newmarket. After a game effort in the Group 1 Irish 2000 Guineas he finished his career with an impressive 2nd in the stallion-making Group 1 St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot, in what was an incredibly competitive year for 3YO European milers. His first Southern Hemisphere season saw him cover 119 mares, including the exceptional Group 1 winner Unforgotten and Miss Barley, the dam of Gytrash, exploiting the successful Lope de Vega x Fastnet Rock cross.

“Lucky Vega was one of the very best sprinter-milers of his generation in Europe. He had a lot of early speed to win a 1200m G1 as an early 2YO. He raced 6 times at G1 level and finished 4 times in the top three. He is by the elite stallion Lope de Vega and he is free of Danehill, not bad for an $18K service fee.” Louis Le Metayer Astute Bloodstock.

GRUNT (NZ) Fee: $13,750 inc GST | 16.2hh O’Reilly (NZ) X Ruqqaya (NZ) By Van Nistelrooy (USA)

As Yulong’s foundation stallion and Group 1-winning son of Champion stallion O’Reilly (NZ), Grunt provides the perfect combination of speed and endurance and is free of Danzig blood. Grunt began his three-year-old campaign with a fourrace winning streak, including the Group 3 CS Hayes Stakes and Group 1 Australian Guineas. He trained on at four to dominantly win the Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes. Ranking elite amongst his generation, he retired with a Timeform rating of 123. Well supported, his first yearling crop has been well received through the 2022 Australian sales, selling to the country’s leading trainers for up to $300,000 and averaging over $100,000 at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

“I’ve been really impressed with Grunt’s first crop of yearlings, he was a great racehorse and is putting substance into his progeny.” Ciaron Maher, who bought the Grunt (NZ) x Cinematic filly at the 2022 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale for $300,000.
