Kiddo Issue 31

Page 1

Ah, summer.

The season of sunshine, sandy car interiors, and the annual reminder that my “summer body” is still on backorder. (Spoiler: it’s never arriving.) Every year, like clockwork, the siren song of selfimprovement starts playing: tone this, flatten that, wear *this*, but for heaven’s sake, not *that*. And every year, get sucked in.

Until now.

At 42, I’ve decided enough is enough—literally. Enough of the sucking in, the covering up, the mental real estate wasted on worrying if my thighs have overstayed their welcome in a pair of shorts. Because honestly, the only person truly invested in my so-called summer body is me. My kids couldn’t care less if I have abs or a muffin top; they just want me in the water playing Marco Polo and running relay races on the beach.

And isn’t that the point? To be *in it*—fully present for the splash wars, the sandy sandwiches, the too-slow races to the ice cream truck? My kids don’t need a role model who’s perfect; they need one who’s there, laughing, living, and eating second helpings of pavlova without apology.

Somewhere along the way, we’ve confused the idea of health with this relentless pursuit of perfection. But here’s the thing: no one’s handing out medals for the best beach body at the end

of summer. Meanwhile, we’re over here, tying ourselves in knots trying to “deserve” joy, as if joy is something you have to earn by drinking kale smoothies or doing planks.

Not this year. This is the Summer of Letting It All Hang Out. Because, spoiler alert, our kids are watching—and they’re taking notes. I’d rather they see me loving the skin I’m in than fighting it. I want them to know life isn’t about looking like you belong in a magazine (even a fabulous one like ours!); it’s about doing cannonballs like you don’t have a care in the world.

So let’s make this the summer we show up—not as some filtered, flawless version of ourselves, but as the gloriously imperfect humans we are. Because the only body you need for summer is the one you’ve already got—and it’s more than enough.

Wishing you the best summer ever, and thank you for being part of the KIDDO family!

SUMMER SUN LABEL

For kids who love the water, and parents who love sun protection

Founded in 2020 by Emilie Sharp-Lebrun, Summer Sun Label began as a way to keep kids safe and stylish in the sun. Inspired by her own children’s endless love for water adventures, Emilie wanted to create kids’ springsuits that would protect little ones from the elements—whether it was the harsh summer sun or a chilly dip in the pool. The result was a playful yet functional line of springsuits, offered in a fun range of colours to keep kids happy and safe outdoors.

In 2022, Emilie welcomed Belinda Luther, who shares her passion for family, fun, and sunsafe products, to the Summer Sun Label team. Together, Emilie and Belinda bring a shared vision of creating high-quality kids' swimwear that’s as practical as it is stylish. Living in the stunning Northern Rivers region of NSW, they draw inspiration from the area’s natural beauty, designing pieces that embrace the sun, sand, and water lifestyle.

With young families of their own, both Emilie and Belinda know what parents want in swimwear: durability, comfort, and peace of mind. “Our springsuits have been designed for both comfort and protection,” they share. “Whether your little

groms are exploring the ocean, creek, pool, slip and slide, or playing under the sprinkler in the backyard, they’ll be protected and comfortable.” Made from high-quality materials that are both sun-resistant and quick-drying, these suits allow for endless play and adventure without compromising on safety.

But Summer Sun Label is about more than just sun safety; it's about creating memories and garments that last. Emilie and Belinda aim to make pieces that become treasured handme-downs, perfect for passing on to siblings or friends. Their commitment to quality ensures that each suit is designed to withstand countless backyard water fights, beach days, and pool parties—without losing its shape or vibrancy.

As the brand grows, Emilie and Belinda stay true to their original mission of making safe, functional, and beautiful swimwear for little ones. Their line captures the spirit of childhood adventure while giving parents peace of mind. Every piece from Summer Sun Label is crafted with love, care, and the knowledge that the best childhood memories often start with a splash. So whether it’s the beach, the backyard, or the local creek, Summer Sun Label has your kids covered—literally and lovingly.

A Personal Approach to Learning

At NumberWorks’nWords, student success thrives on a personalised approach that has been integral to the business since its beginning. Catering to students from Reception to Year 11, the centre ensures every learner is supported through tailored programs. Zoe Walls, the newly appointed manager of the Unley centre, knows this method well—she’s lived it. Starting as a student at the age of nine, Zoe worked her way up through the ranks to become tutor, teacher, and now manager, reflecting the company’s commitment to supporting students every step of the way.

Zoe credits the success of NumberWorks’nWords to the tailored, individualised program each student receives. "I can speak from personal experience, as was once a student here myself," Zoe shares. "The tutors always took the time to understand my strengths, challenges, and learning style, and that made a huge difference in my growth." This nurturing environment is something Zoe has carried forward in her role as manager, ensuring all students receive the same level of support she once did.

What sets NumberWorks’nWords apart is its focus on making learning enjoyable. "We want students to look forward to their lessons, not just because they have to, but because they genuinely enjoy learning," Zoe explains. "Our tutors are dynamic, always encouraging, and ready to celebrate every achievement, no matter how small. When students feel successful, they’re motivated to keep going." This positive reinforcement is at the core of what makes the Unley centre stand out, leaving students feeling proud and eager to return.

The team uses a personalised approach to meet each student's needs. “We begin by assessing each student before their first lesson so we can set clear, achievable goals,” Zoe says. This ongoing assessment ensures students progress at their own pace, celebrating every success along the way.

“The

tutors always took the time to understand my strengths, challenges, and learning style, and that made a huge difference in my growth.”

One of the most rewarding aspects of Zoe’s role is seeing the boost in student confidence.

"The first thing parents tell us is how much their child’s confidence has improved," she says. "This boost is often the first sign that the student feels understood and supported." Zoe adds, "Over time, we see many students who were struggling or barely passing move up to the top of their class, showing incredible growth in both numeracy and literacy."

At the Unley centre, Zoe and her team are dedicated to helping every child thrive. Whether your child needs help with schoolwork or wants to build confidence in maths or English, NumberWorks’nWords offers the tools, support, and encouragement they need to excel.

A food waste solution that sticks USE IT UP TAPE

In Australia, a staggering 7.6 million tonnes of food are wasted each year, equating to over 300kg per person. Shockingly, one-third of this waste comes straight from our homes. But there’s a fun, simple way to tackle this problem while being a hero for the planet: OzHarvest’s Use It Up Tape™—the innovative kitchen tool designed to help you make the most of your food!

So, what exactly is it? Think of it as your friendly reminder system for everything in your fridge, freezer, or pantry that needs a little love before it goes bad. Made from recyclable paper, this dishwasher-proof tape can easily mark a shelf or be stuck directly on items that need to be used up. Once you see what’s on the brink of becoming yesterday's news, you’re much more likely to whip up a meal and use it up instead of letting it spoil!

OzHarvest launched this initiative as part of their Use It Up campaign, aimed at tackling the 2.5 million tonnes of food wasted annually from Australian homes. By encouraging us to cook with what we have before rushing to the store for more, they’re helping us save not only food but also money and the environment. After all, who doesn’t love the idea of saving a few bucks while saving the planet?

In its first year, the Use It Up Tape quickly caught on across Australian households, with over 20,000 tapes distributed. This isn’t just some fleeting kitchen gimmick; research from BehaviourWorks Australia confirms that this tape can lead to a 40% reduction in overall household food waste! Perishable items, like fresh veggies and meat, showed an almost 50% drop in waste, proving that this tape truly helps shift our habits.

The beauty of the Use It Up Tape lies in its simplicity. It serves as a visual prompt and labelling tool, perfect for large households or anyone who feels a bit disorganised in the kitchen. Whether you’re a busy parent juggling kids’ schedules or just someone who tends to overestimate what’s left in the fridge, this tape is your new best friend.

A YEAR OF FIRSTS

The First Year is the debut picture book by Adelaide author and mum-of-two, Emilie Tunstill, with beautiful illustrations by fellow Adelaide creative, Elle DawsonScott. This heartfelt keepsake captures the rollercoaster of emotions, milestones, and tender moments that fill a baby’s first year. Inspired by Emilie’s journey through motherhood, the story unfolds through warm, rhythmic verses, following a mum and her newborn from birth to first birthday as they share in life’s little victories, first smiles, and the challenges that bring them closer together.

Emilie began her journey to becoming a published author in 2023, driven by a passion for writing and the joy she finds reading to her own children day and night. She created The First Year as a love letter to new mums, celebrating the connection between mother and child with an honest yet heartwarming touch. Elle’s illustrations add whimsy and warmth, bringing Emilie’s carefully chosen words to life on every page.

Why not join the fight against food waste? Grab some Use It Up Tape, have a little fun in the kitchen, and see how much food you can save! Together, we can all make a big difference—one roll of tape at a time.

SWIPEE takes the world by storm

Get ready, world! Three 12-year-old legends from the Adelaide Hills are taking family game nights to a whole new level with their original card game, Swipee. Created by Jacob Brumby, Sam Hawkes, and Ben Logan, this fast-paced, strategic game has already scored a global distribution deal with UK games giant, The Fantastic Factory. But the journey of these young game creators started in a classroom back in Year 5 at Stirling East Primary School.

It all began when Jacob, Sam, and Ben finished their schoolwork early and started experimenting with a deck of cards in the back of the classroom, sparking the idea for an original game. Over the next six months, they worked tirelessly to refine the rules, test gameplay, and add a few “special cards” (thanks to Jacob’s twin sister Grace). With the help of Jacob’s uncle, a graphic designer, they polished Swipee into a professional product.

The boys received their first stock in 2023 and launched Swipee with a fundraising event at school, raising money for new sports equipment as a thank you to their community. Their school principal, spotting their potential, invited them to attend the Youth Entrepreneur Summit in Adelaide. There, a few social media posts caught

Why do children and young people like being creative?

the attention of The Fantastic Factory, and soon after, the boys landed a global distribution deal!

So, what makes Swipee so popular? The rules are simple but addictive: each player lays out a 3x3 grid of nine cards and races to line up three of the same cards in a row while shouting, “Swipee!”

Special cards can add a twist by letting you swipe cards from other players or wipe out their progress, keeping every game unique.

Since its release, over 3,500 games have been sold in Australia through market stalls and their website.

Simple, silly. Because ‘it’s fun’! If having fun is part of childhood, then creativity is too! Children tell me that being creative makes them happy, it makes them feel like themselves, and it means they can do the things they’re good at.

Earlier this year ran a series of school consultations on the topic of arts and creativity to find out what creativity looks like for South Australian children and young people, and to hear their ideas for making their communities more creative.

129 children and young people, across a range of socio-economic backgrounds and regions, told me art and creativity is very important to them and a big part of who they are and what they like to do every day. In fact, most saw themselves as being inherently creative.

asked them to share something they did which they considered to be creative. The list was extensive. It included music, craft, fashion, sketching, stories, programming, cooking, nature, video games, workouts, painting, sport, gardening, cubby houses, dance, hair and makeup, knitting, 3D modelling, playing an instrument, metal work, wood tech, handball, playing with Lego, reading and writing comics, jewelry making, interior design, bike riding, baking, singing, songwriting, clay work and coding. There was also singing, dancing, dressing-up, and other forms of imaginative play.

loved hearing this. It meant the children and young people spoke with viewed being creative as an intrinsic part of who they are.

We know, through comprehensive research, that exposure to culture and arts education means children perform better in school and in life more broadly, and that they are generally happier,

If you're looking to add some excitement to your family game nights, Swipee is available at Imagine If Toys in Mitcham and Burnside, and through the Swipee website. These kids are just getting started, and Swipee is proof that the next big thing in gaming can come from anywhere— even a classroom in the Adelaide Hills!

@swipeegames swipeegames.com

With regular monthly stalls at Stirling Laneways and local stockists like Games World and Imagine If Toys, Swipee is a true homegrown hit. And it’s not just staying local—Fantastic Factory has already distributed 5,000 units across Sweden, Denmark, Norway, and Finland, with plans to expand to the U.S., Brazil, the UK, and Germany. Plus, an Australian distributor will be coming on board in 2025, setting Swipee up for an even bigger future.

more confident, and more connected to others.

Through creativity children learn to integrate their feelings with tasks. When we ask a child to paint, draw or tell a story about how they feel, they learn how to express their feelings safely and creatively.

Many children and young people said they know their feelings often spark their creativity and that being creative provides them with an opportunity to express their feelings and to relax, regulate and/or manage their emotions.

Children told me they would like to have more safe places to express themselves creatively and that being in a safe space helps them focus and find inspiration. They said when they’re encouraged to be creative it feels like adults are giving them permission to use their imagination and to express themselves without being judged. They also told me that being in quiet, calm spaces with music and colour work best!

Children and young people had lots of ideas for how to make their homes, schools, communities and public spaces more creative. They suggested providing more creative materials and having more dedicated spaces and time in which to be creative. They said these spaces could include the local library or sporting facility, or even be on the school bus! Let’s encourage our kids to be creative every single day.

THE WOLF

The Wolf Gang is a call to the fearless, the dreamers, and those who crave the extraordinary. With Vanessa Pearce at the helm, this fashion label has mastered the art of turning bold prints and vintage silhouettes into pieces that radiate confidence and undeniable edge. From Adelaide’s creative hub to a global audience, The Wolf Gang is a fashion revolution in the making.

FROM LOCAL LABEL TO GLOBAL SENSATION

Today, The Wolf Gang is stocked by major retailers, including Revolve, Anthropologie, and Shopbop, alongside boutiques worldwide. Securing these partnerships has been a dream come true for Vanessa and her team.

“We definitely popped a bottle when we secured Shopbop and Revolve. International expansion is no easy feat, and I’m blessed by my team’s combined effort to make it a reality.”

Vanessa’s dedication to nurturing global relationships has also taken her to fashion hubs like New York, London, and Paris.

Born in the heart of Adelaide, The Wolf Gang is more than just a label; it’s a celebration of boldness, wanderlust, and timeless style. Since its inception, the brand has captured the imaginations of women worldwide, with vibrant collections that offer a modern take on vintageinspired silhouettes. The babe behind the brand, Vanessa Pearce, is a visionary who has turned her passion for unique design into an international success story.

Vanessa recently sat down with us to discuss the journey of The Wolf Gang, sharing insights into her creative process, her inspirations, and how she balances being a mum of three with leading a global fashion empire.

A CREATIVE SPARK TURNED FASHION ICON

Every great brand starts with a spark of inspiration, and for Vanessa, that spark was born out of a love for artisan fashion and the vibrant textiles she encountered on her travels.

"Straight out of school, started in the beauty industry, working at department stores and doing freelance wedding makeup on weekends," Vanessa says. "In my early twenties, crossed over to fashion retail while finishing my public relations degree. After graduating, had a short PR contract with a fashion brand in Sydney, followed by a marketing role in Adelaide. Neither job was long-term, but the experience solidified my burning desire to start my own brand. That’s how The Wolf Gang formed."

The journey began with a humble yet striking offering: soft suede pouches inspired by the bustling markets of Morocco. These pouches, particularly the now-iconic Bedouin Clutch, set the tone for the brand’s signature style—a mix of bold colours, artisanal embellishments, and global influences.

“Travelling for work is like a dream come true,” Vanessa admitted. “The brand is performing really well in the Northern Hemisphere, and it’s important to understand the market and nurture buyer relationships. However, being away from my kids is extremely difficult—though think they hardly notice when I’m gone!”

As The Wolf Gang has expanded globally, so has Vanessa's team, which now spans across cities like London, Sydney, LA, and Bali. Despite the distances, Vanessa has a hands-on approach to keeping everyone connected and the brand running seamlessly.

"I love having these touchpoints close to our markets and manufacturers, it’s been a real advantage for us," Vanessa says. Regular checkins, combined with the use of a communications app for updates, help keep the team aligned. Vanessa admits that she often pulls her laptop out at night after the kids go to bed to ensure things are moving forward.

"I’ve found communicating with our London team to be relatively easy, even with the time difference. It’s just part of the job, and I’m happy to make it work!"

Her commitment to staying connected with her team – no matter where they are – is a testament to the brand's dedication to quality and consistency. This personal involvement is just one of the reasons why The Wolf Gang has managed to build such a strong, cohesive presence on the global stage.

Despite this global reach, The Wolf Gang remains deeply connected to its Adelaide roots. Vanessa credits the city’s relaxed vibe and immense creative talent for shaping her approach to design and business.

“Adelaide hosts an incredible amount of talent, and some of the best creatives are from here. The comfort of home allows me to be creative, work on growing the business, and still have time for family and friends.”

When asked how Adelaide influences her designs, Vanessa says it has a lot to do with the city’s easy going lifestyle. “Adelaide gives me the space to create timeless yet bold pieces that transcend trends.”

I believe the key is working with vintage inspired silhouettes and using high-quality, versatile materials that transcend fleeting trends.

Indeed, balancing timeless elegance with bold innovation is at the core of The Wolf Gang’s design ethos. Vanessa’s creative process begins with one question: What makes this piece special?

“I look for a combination of uniqueness and wearability. A piece has to feel distinctive— whether through its shape, fabric, or details— while also being versatile and wearable. Most importantly, it has to evoke a feeling—a sense of confidence, beauty, or empowerment. That’s what’s truly important to me– knowing the wearer will look her best, feel confident and be given lots of compliments on her outfit.”

This philosophy extends to the brand’s aesthetic, which draws inspiration from silhouettes from as far back as the 60s, and 70s. Vanessa elaborates, “We avoid all trend forecasting platforms and instead look to bygone eras and faraway cities for inspiration. At the same time, we incorporate unexpected details and modern twists that make each piece feel fresh and relevant.”

The brand’s seasonal offerings cater to a variety of needs, from vacation dressing to statement event wear.

When asked which pieces she’d pack for a dream vacation, Vanessa was quick to name her essentials:

Á The Sunmor Dress: “It’s comfortable, versatile, and an absolute knockout.”

Á The Suri Shell Bag: “It fits so much and looks unique for day dates or events.”

Á Crochet Bikinis: “A poolside must-have always!”

Each piece is designed with purpose, ensuring that every item in The Wolf Gang collection is both functional and unforgettable.

Vanessa’s personal style is a perfect mirror of The Wolf Gang's bold and eclectic aesthetic. Her wardrobe tells a story of creativity and individuality, with one collection holding a special place in her heart: her shoes.

We want to continue creating pieces that evoke emotion and allow women to carry a bit of the otherworldly into the everyday.

With a smile, Vanessa reveals that this is her most cherished fashion lineup. “My extensive shoe collection features in almost every shoot we do,” she says. “Even though I have a small foot, we somehow manage to make my personal collection fit on all the gorgeous tall models who come through our studio!”

A piece has to feel distinctive— whether through its shape, fabric, or details—while also being versatile and wearable. Most importantly, it has to evoke a feeling—a sense of confidence, beauty, or empowerment.

THE WOLF PACK

As a mum of three—Marty (8), Heidi (7), and Odie (5)—Vanessa somehow manages to juggles the demands of running a global brand with family life.

Adelaide hosts an incredible amount of talent, and some of the best creatives are from here. The comfort of home allows me to be creative, work on growing the business, and still have time for family and friends.

“I cherish any time off after work with my three gorgeous kids and husband, Sam,” she said. Whether it’s escaping to the beach, enjoying a kid-friendly dinner, or indulging in a rare date night, Vanessa prioritises quality family time.

Her kids also play a surprising role in the creative process. “They definitely give me feedback! They often comment on the colours, fabrics, and even the names of the collections. Their honesty and fresh perspective sometimes make me rethink my choices!”

When asked about her dream collaboration, Vanessa’s answer was as bold and inspired as her designs. “Mexican architect Javier Senosiain.

his flowing, sculptural architecture.”

Looking ahead, Vanessa is committed to furthering The Wolf Gang’s vision as a lifestyle brand that transcends borders and trends. “We want to continue creating pieces that evoke emotion and allow women to carry a bit of the otherworldly into the everyday.”

Even amidst a packed schedule, Vanessa finds time to explore Adelaide with her family. “Some of our go-to spots include Chalk Hill Winery and Lost Phoenix Farm in the

and individuality. Whether you’re drawn to its vibrant prints, handcrafted embellishments, or timeless silhouettes, each piece tells a story of wanderlust and creativity.

As Vanessa Pearce continues to shape The Wolf Gang’s legacy, she invites women everywhere to embrace boldness and beauty—one unforgettable piece at a time.

Volkswagen Touareg R

The

ultimate sports-mum SUV

For a mum of three like me, weekends are anything but a slow roll. Between multiple early morning sports matches and trainings, music lessons, and school and social events, I need a car that can keep up with the chaos. The Volkswagen Touareg R eHybrid promised to be a spacious, family-friendly powerhouse, so I took it out for a spin on our typical Saturday sports run. Turns out, it might just be the perfect family car. Here’s how it kept up with every busy moment.

Room for all the gear

The first thing noticed when packing the car was the sheer size of the Touareg R’s boot. It easily fit cricket bags, archery gear, and my youngest’s beloved (and surprisingly large) French horn. There was still room for all the other random sports essentials, like snacks, backpacks, blankets, and a cooler bag. Volkswagen has really thought about family storage here, creating a space that’s not just big but cleverly designed, with underfloor compartments perfect for the odds and ends we parents know all too well.

Smooth, silent mornings

Starting off in the Touareg R was almost unnervingly quiet—so much so that had to double-check if the car was actually running! This SUV always starts in “E-MODE” — a fully electric mode, meaning it pulls away without a sound, which is ideal for early mornings before the coffee has kicked in. The Touareg’s electric motor has a range of up to 51 kilometres on a single charge, so could easily drive the kids to and from their various activities without even touching the fuel reserves. Not only is it eco-friendly, but there’s also something extra relaxing about gliding away without the typical engine noise. And with fuel prices always creeping up, a hybrid option is a win.

Performance that packs a punch

When it’s time to really get moving, the Touareg R has serious power on demand. Its combined output of 340kW and 700Nm of torque (thank you, turbocharged V6 and electric motor!) means it goes from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.1 seconds. Do need that much power for the school run? Not really. But on a long stretch of open road or a quick overtake on the freeway, it’s nice to know the car has that muscle if I need it. And despite its size, the Touareg is surprisingly nimble. Volkswagen’s 4MOTION all-wheel-drive system and air suspension give it a smooth, almost gliding feel, even on bumpy roads.

Comfort meets style

Volkswagen didn’t just design this car for performance — they’ve nailed the comfort factor too. The Puglia leather seats are luxurious, with both heating and cooling options that make all the difference during winter mornings or hot summer days. And did I mention they have a massage feature? I’ll admit, waiting for the kids’ practice to finish wasn’t so bad with a back massage! There’s even a panoramic sunroof that brings in a ton of light, adding a sense of openness to an already spacious interior.

From the outside, the Touareg R’s “R-specific” details make it truly eye-catching, especially with its glossy black 22-inch Estoril wheels. It has a sporty but refined look, and the bold new light signature at the front and rear — including the illuminated VW badge on the back — adds a touch of modern elegance. As much as appreciate its practicality, also love that this car genuinely looks good wherever it’s parked.

Inside, it’s clear Volkswagen went all out on premium finishes. From the soft-touch surfaces to the brushed dark aluminium inserts, every detail feels high-end.

Safety and tech that simplifies

One of my favourite features is the comprehensive suite of driver-assistance tools that make everything feel so much easier — especially when I’m trying to keep three kids in line while navigating busy traffic. The Touareg R’s lane-keeping assistance and adaptive cruise control are lifesavers on those longer drives. And the 360-degree camera makes backing into a tight parking spot (not my forté) or slipping out of a crowded sports complex feel effortless, even with distracted kids in the backseat.

Inside, the Touareg’s Innovision Cockpit is a huge digital display that merges navigation, music, and controls in one. The layout is logical and accessible, so never felt overwhelmed by all the tech and buttons. There’s also plenty of tech for the passengers, with charging ports in both rows, so on longer drives my kids can stay occupied.

Final verdict

The Volkswagen Touareg R eHybrid delivers the full package: it’s a car with power, performance, and plenty of practicality for the family. With room for all the kids’ things, luxurious comfort, and plenty of thoughtful tech, it made every Saturday morning run feel a bit more manageable.

From $138,888, the Touareg R offers excellent value for money, combining spaciousness, capability, and premium features in a family SUV. For those seeking a vehicle that delivers on performance and practicality while exceeding expectations, it’s a fantastic choice. And for busy mums who want a bit of luxury (with a side of serious power), this hybrid SUV makes all the difference between just surviving the sports day shuffle and actually enjoying it.

A SAFE SPACE TO GROW

At AnglicareSA we work together with our families, children, and wider communities to promote inclusion, create a positive social impact, and change lives. You will see and feel that the moment we greet you at our inclusive Early Learning Centre located in Prospect.

The Daphne Street Childcare and Specialist Early Learning Centre provides a sense of home, belonging, and acceptance. The team understands the importance of early childhood education and aims to foster dispositions, skills, and learning that children will carry throughout life.

This centre incorporates a mainstream childcare program, an Autism-Specific Early Learning and Care Centre (ASELCC), and an Inclusive Learning Environments for Autism Program. It is licensed to care for children from birth to school age.

“My experiences with the centre for the last four years have been nothing short of amazing. Words can’t describe the love, care and overall support my children have received and felt.” - Soula, Daphne Street ELC parent

The childcare services champion inclusive education, offering an educational, playbased program designed to promote each child’s individual development. These programs are underpinned by the Early Years Learning Framework and the SCERTS Model, a comprehensive educational approach for children with autism. By encouraging curiosity and creativity in a secure and inclusive environment, the centre helps children seek new challenges and connect with their natural world and the people within it.

Within the Autism-Specific Early Learning and Care Centre, therapists are integrated into the early childhood setting, providing individualised therapy and supporting children as they participate in the childcare programs. This approach helps children develop skills and supports their families with the transition to school. The intensive and structured environment ensures that families have access to both therapeutic support and opportunities for skill development in both educational and home settings.

Finding a voice

Mum-of-six Teagan has experienced the transformative power of communication. For her family, speech pathology has been a crucial part of their journey.

Three of Teagan’s children - Amelia, Caleb, and Charli—have received support from AnglicareSA’s speech pathologists to enhance their speech, listening, and language skills. This journey began when Caleb, now eight, attended the Autism-Specific Early Learning and Care Centre at Daphne Street.

“I was desperate for help,” Teagan recalls. “Caleb was just over two and wasn’t talking. It was the first time I’d come across autism and what that means for development. Mainstream childcare wasn’t working for him, and I needed somewhere supportive of his needs.”

CELEBRATING EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATORS

At Daphne Street Childcare Centre, including the Autism-Specific Early Learning and Care Centre, educators go beyond teachingthey nurture growth and potential.

For Early Learning Room Leader Caroline Ramages, this role is a lifelong passion. “I’ve been in early learning for 29 years - it’s the only job I’ve ever done, and I love it,” she shares. “Seeing children’s faces light up as they learn is so rewarding.”

Caroline supports children under two, mentors her team, and fosters a sense of belonging for families. “Creating trust and making families feel secure is key,” she explains. “We’re shaping the first years of life, and that takes time, work, and passion.”

CHRISTMAS HOPE FOR FAMILIES IN NEED

As he watched his four young children open their Christmas presents last year, Paul Deng’s heart was filled with happiness.

In the weeks leading up to Christmas, the solo father of four had visited UnitingSA’s Toy Room to select something special for each of his children – Deng, 6; Dimo, 5; Ajok, 3; and oneyear-old Abraham.

For Paul, access to the Toy Room was a lifeline.

With his family struggling to find secure housing and make ends meet, buying gifts for his children had been out of the question.

But in the midst of this hardship and overwhelming stress, Paul realised he could depend on UnitingSA for the support he needed.

This year, Paul has once again registered to visit the toy room, ensuring his kids will have gifts under the tree while he continues working, with the help of UnitingSA social workers, to stabilise his family’s situation. This includes recently moving into secure housing in the inner northern suburbs.

Help a family like Paul’s this Christmas

You can help bring a smile to a child's face this Christmas. Last year, over 500 families visited the Toy Room, and UnitingSA needs your support to keep it stocked and ready for the festive season ahead.

Your financial donations also provide essential emergency relief for families facing hardship or homelessness, helping them access food, clothing, and hygiene products.

How does the Toy Room work?

UnitingSA works every day with people who are doing it tough, including many families in need of gifts and food during Christmas. Parents and caregivers are invited to visit the Toy Room in the weeks leading up to Christmas to select a gift, stocking fillers, and wrapping paper for their children, who would otherwise go without.

Not only does this provide parents the joy of choosing a gift their child will love, but our donors can be assured that their gifts are going to children who will delight in unwrapping them on Christmas morning.

It’s been a stressful few years for Paul, especially after his separation from his wife, which left him as the sole caregiver for their children. Originally from South Sudan, and a former social worker, Paul gave up his job when the family began to face difficulties.

“In my culture, you grow up in an extended family – brothers, sisters, cousins, uncles,” Paul says. “They are all there to help you when things get difficult. It doesn’t work like that here, and you can feel like you’re on your own. had a lot of help from Sister Joyce and Sister Gina from the Adelaide Day Centre for Homeless People – they helped me get my house.”

Paul also credits his children’s primary school for being a constant source of support, meeting his kids’ daily needs and enhancing their wellbeing during school hours.

When Paul’s relationship started to break down, he took a night job so he could be home with the children during the day. But the pressure of balancing work with family responsibilities took its toll, and it became harder to cope. That’s when Paul, near breaking point, reached out for help and was connected with UnitingSA.

Looking back, Paul says reaching out was one of the best decisions he could have made. Through UnitingSA’s Emergency Relief and Men and Family Relationships programs, Paul found the help he needed to stay positive and focused on what mattered most – his children.

“I was needing help for my family to stay together, but also realised I needed to see someone to help me. That’s how I came to the Men’s Program about three years ago, and still go,” Paul shares.

“David helped me move forward and be positive. He helped me think about what was most important to me – my children. don’t want to let them down.”

Last Christmas, Paul was able to use the Toy Room to find something special for his kids. “It would have been so difficult not to have something for them, and I didn’t want to disappoint them.”

As his relationship broke down, Paul says the support from UnitingSA’s workers helped him keep his children with him and eventually find stable housing.

“Anyone who is having trouble, the first step is to reach out to people who can offer counselling and help you decide what’s important to you,” he advises.

UnitingSA helps more than 12,000 South Australians each year. The not-forprofit organisation is all about respect, compassion and justice.

From humble beginnings in Port Adelaide in 1919, UnitingSA has grown to support people across metropolitan and regional South Australia with a range of services including emergency relief, mental health services, NDIS support, family and community services and more.

The GIFT Trial

Exploring the benefits of donor milk for moderate and late preterm babies

Feeding preterm babies can be a delicate challenge, as many require extra nutrition while establishing breastfeeding. Though infant formula is a common solution when a mother's milk is not available or is in short supply, it can be harder to digest and lead to complications like feeding intolerance, increased need for IV fluids and interrupt the establishment of breastfeeding. An emerging alternative is pasteurised donor human milk (donor milk), which is gentler on preterm babies' digestive systems and could help them transition to breastfeeding more quickly, reducing their time in the hospital after birth.

Led by the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI) and Australian Red Cross Lifeblood, the GIFT Trial is currently recruiting more than 2,000 babies to research whether donor milk should be the preferred option for preterm babies born between 32 and 36 weeks (known as moderate-late preterm) when there isn’t enough maternal breast milk available, gathering crucial data that could transform neonatal care in Australia.

What is the GIFT Trial?

The GIFT Trial is a large-scale research study investigating the health and economic benefits of using donor milk for babies born moderately-

Why is this study important?

When extra milk is needed, donor milk may be better than the current alternatives, but its benefits for moderate and late preterm infants have not been studied extensively. The GIFT Trial will help determine whether donor milk should be made available to all preterm infants, not just those born before 32 weeks.

How is donor milk screened?

Australian Red Cross Lifeblood, which supplies the donor milk, follows a strict screening process for donors, similar to that for blood donations. Donors are tested for infectious diseases, and their health and lifestyle are assessed to ensure the safety of the milk.

Who can participate in the GIFT Trial?

The trial is open to babies during their stay in a hospital neonatal unit who are born between 32 and 36 weeks gestation, less than four days old and need more milk than their mother can provide.

Where is the GIFT Trial taking place?

The trial is being conducted at seven hospitals, including the Women’s and Children’s Hospital, Lyell McEwin and Flinders Medical Centre in South Australia, as well as other hospitals in Queensland, New South Wales and Western Australia.

How are participants selected for the GIFT Trial?

Parents are informed about the trial during their baby’s admission to the neonatal unit. Nurses in participating hospitals evaluate if babies meet the eligibility criteria and need extra milk.

What is involved in the study?

How long does the study last?

The study will follow the baby during their stay in the hospital and up to 18 months of age

How long will the trial take to complete?

The research component is expected to run over five years. Results from the trial will be published once all the data has been collected and analysed, helping to inform future care practices for preterm infants.

How does the trial support breastfeeding?

The GIFT Trial is designed to support breastfeeding by using donor milk only when a mother’s milk supply is insufficient. The goal is to give babies the best possible start while helping mothers establish their own milk supply. Breastfeeding will continue to be encouraged, with healthcare teams providing support to ensure a smooth transition to exclusive breastfeeding once it is possible.

Does it cost anything to participate?

No, all milk is provided at no cost to participants. Milk is only provided during the time the baby is admitted to the hospital neonatal unit.

What are the benefits of participating?

• Special Care Nursery for premature and highly dependent newborn babies, helping mum and baby stay together.

What is donor milk?

If a baby is eligible and the parents agree to participate, the baby will be randomly assigned to receive either donor milk or formula when they need extra milk. The healthcare team will closely monitor the baby’s feeding progress and overall health.

For more details, you can contact the research team: late preterm when their mother’s own milk is not available or in short supply. The trial will assess whether donor milk can reduce feeding problems, decrease hospital stays, and support better growth and development in these babies.

Donor milk is human breast milk donated by other mothers, which is pasteurised (heattreated) to kill any bacteria or viruses, making it safe for preterm babies. Donor milk is commonly used for babies born before 32 weeks, as their health risks are higher, and the benefits of donor milk are well established for this group. The GIFT Trial is assessing expanding its use to moderate and late preterm babies.

Participating contributes to helping us answer important research questions that could improve care for preterm babies in the future.

IGNITING A LOVE OF LEARNING STARTS WITH EDGE

Nurturing young minds, fostering a love of learning, and preparing children for school is the heartfelt mission of Edge Early Learning.

Recognising that the foundation of a lifelong love for learning is established during a child's early years, Edge is committed to going beyond traditional childcare.

Their approach is all about creating an environment where young minds can thrive, and a genuine passion for learning is not just encouraged but celebrated.

EDGE’S HOLISTIC APPROACH TO LEARNING

Edge provides enriching learning experiences through quality education and care for children aged from 6-weeks to school-age by instilling a love of learning through play-based experiences and resources.

With 34 centres across South East Queensland, each Edge centre features modern classrooms with state-of-the-art learning facilities, as well as engaging and spacious, natural outdoor play areas.

One of the highlights that sets Edge apart is the backing of a passionate team of qualified and experienced educators, who through Edge’s educational programs, support and enhance learning milestones and journeys across all areas of development.

The educational program is built upon four fundamental pillars: education, wellbeing, community, and sustainability. These pillars form the foundation of their approach to early childhood education.

Edge’s philosophy is centred around a holistic style of learning through an inquiry-based learning approach. Children are encouraged to ask questions, explore new ideas, and learn through play.

This approach is supported by the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF), which emphasises play-based learning to guide children toward their developmental goals.

INSTILLING A LIFE-LONG LOVE OF LEARNING

As children take their first steps into primary school, it marks a significant and transformative moment in their lives.

The process can be an exciting and daunting time for children as they transition from their day-to-day learning routine to their first year of education.

Edge understands the importance of this transition, and its Kindergarten program is designed to prepare children for this exciting leap.

The program not only equips children with the academic skills they need but also nurtures their social and emotional development, ensuring they are well-prepared for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.

The educational programs are tailored to each age group – nursery, toddler and kindergarten – and encourage children to learn and explore interests across a range of STEAM based subjects including Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Maths.

“At Edge Early Learning, we understand that the roots of a lifelong love for learning are firmly established in the earliest years of a child's life,”

Edge Early Learning CEO Annie Bryce said.

“We encourage children to explore new ideas and learn through play, as we cater to children from 6 weeks to school age and focus on preparing them for primary school, socially, emotionally, and developmentally.”

Catering to all dietary requirements, including morning tea, lunch, and afternoon snacks, all served in a communal setting to encourage socialisation.

Children enjoy a vast variety of meals, salads, soups, mains and desserts. Some of the children’s favourites are focaccias, pinwheels, chicken curry, spaghetti and meatballs, and burgers that the children get to construct themselves.

“We are conscious that healthy habits ingrained in a child’s first five years will set the tone for future wellbeing, and that’s why we are so passionate about the health and wellbeing of children at a young age,” Annie said.

Edge is leading the way in the early learning industry, offering mindfulness activities such as yoga, and incorporating sustainable practices such as utilising bamboo nappies and wipes, sunscreen, and use of environmentally friendly cleaning products, all included in the daily fee.

FLEXIBILITY FOR FAMILIES

“We're not just preparing children for school; we're preparing them for a future where they become confident and involved learners,” Mrs Bryce said.

“We believe in equipping children with the tools they need to succeed academically and personally, setting the stage for a lifetime of learning.”

A fundamental aspect of Edge's approach is its strong partnerships with local schools. These connections create a seamless bridge between the familiar environment of Edge and the new adventure of primary school so children can step into their next phase of education with confidence and ease.

NOURISHING YOUNG MINDS

While education is at the heart of Edge’s values, they also understand the significance of health and wellbeing and actively promote healthy eating and an active lifestyle within the centres.

Each centre offers daily nutritious meals made by in-house chefs, ensuring that every child receives the essential fuel they need for growth and development.

Ask Amy...

Q: How can families navigate custody disputes during the holiday season?

A: Holidays can be challenging for separated parents when disputes arise over who has time with the kids during Christmas or the summer holidays. While Australian family law offers guidance, reaching a mutual agreement is always the best approach. Here’s a quick guide on resolving disputes about holiday time and key deadlines for this year.

1. Set up a parenting plan or court orders

To avoid disputes, parents should ideally have a parenting plan or court orders which covers arrangements for the holidays. Parenting plans are flexible, written agreements signed by both parents, while court orders are legally binding. These documents can outline who has time over each holiday, reducing last-minute conflicts.

2. Communicate early

If you haven't reached a formal agreement, start discussing holiday plans as soon as possible. Consider options like holiday rotation, split holidays, and, where appropriate, the children's preferences. Early, clear communication helps reduce misunderstandings and ensures both parents feel heard.

3. Use mediation if needed

Edge understands modern families have diverse needs and schedules. Centres across South East Queensland operate up to 12-hours daily, from Monday to Friday.

This allows flexibility for families and carers and also allows them to maximise their Child Care Subsidy (CCS) allocation.

Edge Early Learning instils a love for learning that goes far beyond the classroom and empowers children with the tools they need to succeed in school and in life.

With 34 centres across South East Queensland, and 61 centres nationwide, Edge Early Learning is delivering quality early education to more than 6,000 children per day and providing over 1800 jobs across Queensland, ACT, and South Australia.

ALEX AND ARLO: A SIBLING STORY

Alex and Arlo takes readers through the various experiences Alex faces as a sibling to her younger brother Arlo, who has a disability. The story can help young sibling children feel less alone in their experiences, and provide reassurance that there are others out there who understand how they feel.

If direct communication isn’t enough, consider Family Dispute Resolution (FDR) mediation, available through law firms, community organisations, and specialised mediation centres. Mediators help parents work toward a compromise, prioritising the children's best interests. FDR is generally required before applying for a court parenting order unless the case involves family violence or urgent issues.

4. Legal options

If mediation fails, parents can apply to the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia for a parenting order. The court will make a decision based on the children’s best interests, focusing on stability, the children's relationship with each parent, and practical considerations.

5. Plan ahead to avoid future conflicts

To avoid recurring disputes, parents can:

z Develop a recurring holiday schedule that includes holiday rotations or split time.

z Update arrangements as needed for changes in circumstances.

z Use a shared calendar to keep both parents on track with the plan.

Final thoughts

Disputes about the holidays can be emotionally taxing, but early communication, mediation, and planning can make them manageable. If conflicts persist, legal options are available, and meeting the November 8 filing deadline ensures timely court review.

Should you have any questions or concerns about your parenting arrangements contact the DBH Family Law team on FREE CALL 1800324324.

FIRST DAY FEARS?

Preparing your child (and yourself) for Reception

Whether it is your first or last child preparing to start Reception, as parents we all want the same thing. For our child to feel safe, supported and confident. At the same time, parents can inherently struggle with not wanting to make a fuss or impose on anyone. You might be saying to yourself, “There are children with greater needs” or “I don’t know what to say.” This can lead to a loop of knowing you need to do something and then not knowing where to start.

Here are some tips that, as a teacher and Mum of two, I hope will instill you with the confidence to advocate for your child as they commence their educational journey.

START BEFORE TRANSITION

Your first interaction with the school does not have to be at the initial transition visit. It is perfectly reasonable to contact the Principal or Inclusive Education Coordinator to set up a meeting to discuss your child’s needs well in advance of the scheduled transition date. Please remember your child does not need to have a diagnosis for you to request this. It could be separation anxiety or even a gut feeling that the transition process might be tricky. You know your child best and this is the time to act.

TIP: Do not assume that because you have sent in reports or information about your child this has been received. Schools are busy places and communication can break down. Seek confirmation in your first contact if what you have provided has been acknowledged.

HOLIDAY PREPARATION

TAILORING TRANSITION

All schools run completely different transition programs. Some have visits for a whole term, others may only have one. Don’t be afraid to ask for extra visits for your child either prior to the first scheduled session or following. This might involve you staying with them to explore the school or your child joining a class for an extra morning or two. Building confidence in the school setting and rapport with teachers takes time and transition programs can be restrictive.

TIP: Try to not feel pressured to leave your child at their visit. If you think it is best to stay, even for a short time, make this known. The school of course would not want every parent staying in the classroom, but if you know this is going to make the process easier for your child, say so, journey together.

TEACHER PLACEMENT

It can be worthwhile confirming if your child’s visits will be with the teacher they will be having in the coming year, as this is not always the case. If the school intends to rotate each visit, consider if this is something that is going to help or hinder the transition process for your child. If you feel they need most, or all, of the visits to build rapport, request if they can be placed with their teacher for the coming year for the duration of the transition program.

If this is not possible, it would be a great idea to set up a meeting in the week before school starts for your child to meet their new teacher.

TIP: Ask to meet the teacher the week before school commences if the your child does not have them for transition visits.

The Christmas break is long and the weeks between transition and school commencing in January can seem like a lifetime. Ask the Principal or Inclusive Educator Coordinator if they have a transition booklet for your child for the holidays. Ideally, this would include different areas of the school, teachers and some information about routines. Also think about going to the playground at the school over the break. This is a great way for your child to familiarise themselves with the grounds without the pressure of a full school yard on day one.

TIP: Consider setting up some playdates with children you know will be in your child’s class over the break.

INFORM

The more information you can provide to the school and teacher the better. Draw on the members of your child’s support team, whether that is the Kindergarten, child care or allied health professionals to provide the school with information and strategies to best support your child.

TIP: Consider summarising this information in a concise ‘This is me’’ page for the class teacher.

CLEANING UP SKINCARE

When it comes to skincare, Lil McAvaney, the founder of Summer Skin, is bringing a breath of fresh air. Her journey—from battling migraines and hormone imbalances as a teenager to launching a proudly Aussiemade, clean beauty brand—is a powerful example of turning challenges into triumphs. For Lil, the start of Summer Skin was all about a personal aha moment regarding the ingredients we put on our skin and the potential health risks. Fast forward to today, and she’s leading the charge to redefine what ‘clean skincare’ really means in a market full of greenwashing. We caught up with Lil to chat about her journey, her brand’s mission, and how she’s making skincare simpler, safer, and more effective for everyone.

I would LOVE to one day make an honest, uncomplicated solution for parents to use on their children.

For Lil, Summer Skin is more than a business; it’s a personal mission. She lost her dad at a young age and later experienced her own health struggles with migraines and hormone imbalances; experiences that shaped her approach to wellness.

“My journey really started with two big things in my life: losing my dad to a brain aneurysm when was 12, and dealing with migraines caused by hormonal imbalances. These experiences pushed me to pay closer attention to what was putting on my skin and using daily,” she shares.

“For example, I realised that many deodorants use aluminum as the main ingredient, which didn’t sit right with me. When I launched Summer Skin Australia, there weren’t many clean, natural, Australian-made options out there, so wanted to create products that felt safe and aligned with what valued.

Lil’s resolve to offer products free of questionable ingredients, and full of beneficial ones, birthed Summer Skin. At a time when “clean beauty” options were limited in Australia, Lil’s brand emerged as a refreshing, honest alternative.

WHAT MAKES SUMMER SKIN DIFFERENT?

In a world where nearly every brand claims to be “clean” or “natural,” Lil wanted Summer Skin to truly embody these words. It’s more than a marketing term—it’s a commitment. Her formulas go through years of perfecting, with a laser focus on results and transparency.

“Our formulas are crafted with such care—it usually takes years to perfect them. We’re focused on results and effectiveness, and I’m proud to say we’re consistent in delivering that,” she explains.

“Another thing that sets us apart is that we’re completely transparent—no greenwashing here. We provide full clarity on our ingredient lists and claims because it’s easy for marketing to label something as ‘clean’ or ‘natural’ without fully meaning it. Our goal is to make sure our customers can truly trust what they’re putting on their skin.”

This open approach has resonated with Summer Skin fans, who not only love the products but also trust them. Lil’s dedication to transparency makes it easy for customers to know they’re investing in safe, genuinely natural products.

MAKING THE SWITCH TO NATURAL SKINCARE?

Transitioning from mainstream products to clean skincare can feel daunting, but Lil encourages everyone to give it a shot. She knows that some may think natural products don’t “work” as well, but she’s here to prove them wrong.

“I feel sometimes if people see a product that is naturally formulated, or made with clean ingredients they believe it won't work, and that can deter them,” Lil admits. “Give it a go because I am confident you will see equal if not better results!”

If there’s one product Lil can’t live without, it’s her beloved Glow Drops, which she describes as “the best face self-tanning product to ever exist.”

“Wear this, wake up the next morning and you will literally get told you're glowing or asked 'where you have been holidaying?'. I would always pair it wwith The Complete Hydrator or Skin Repairing Oil - their natural coconut/vanilla fragrance also gives the dreamiest, holiday feel.”

Of all the skincare myths Lil has encountered, one she’d love to see disappear is the idea that clean deodorants just don’t measure up.

“People often say 'natural deodorant doesn’t work!'—but it really comes down to finding one that does, made with premium, truly natural ingredients and no chemicals,” Lik says. “Chemicals are actually what contribute to body odour by attracting bad bacteria. So, if a 'natural deodorant' has even a tiny bit of synthetic chemicals, like 3%, it’s likely not going to be effective. Finding a deodorant that’s genuinely chemical-free can make all the difference!”

We provide full clarity on our ingredient lists and claims because it’s easy for marketing to label something as ‘clean’ or ‘natural’ without fully meaning it. Our goal is to make sure our customers can truly trust what they’re putting on their skin.

When I launched Summer Skin Australia, there weren’t many clean, natural, Australianmade options out there, so I wanted to create products that felt safe and aligned with what I valued.

THE MOTHER OF INVENTION

Becoming a mum has changed Lil’s approach to skincare more than she ever imagined. Her heightened awareness of ingredients has translated into how she cares for her kids’ skin and her vision for future products.

“I’ve learned so much about how our skin is like a giant sponge that absorbs everything we put on it. For my kids, try to cut back on soaps when possible and instead add our Skin Repairing Oil to their bath. It’s 100% natural, with hydrating and antibacterial ingredients that are gentle on their skin. It’s amazing what you find when you start reading ingredient labels and researching what’s actually in some products on the market. I would LOVE to one day make an honest, uncomplicated solution for parents to use on their children.”

As a busy mum and business owner, Lil values products that serve multiple purposes. Her daily staples? Skin Repairing Oil and The Complete Hydrator, both of which are versatile enough for her entire family to use.

“I love that our Skin Repairing Oil and The Complete Hydrator are multi-use. use them on the kids, my face and body and Cory uses them too! use both of these daily. I have the Hydrator in my car and it's the cutest - both of my kids pop it over their face on the way to school everyday. Also Glow Drops are my biggest mum hack to date, pop them on at night and wake up looking like actually got some rest, haha. Simplifying my morning with no makeup needed!”

For Lil, finding balance is a daily challenge. Like any working parent, she juggles ‘mum guilt’ and her dedication to her business. But with a strong support system, she’s making it work.

“This is definitely still a work in progress for me,” she says. “Some days are tougher than others, and the ‘mum guilt’ is real. I do my best to leave work at work when can. I’m really lucky to have so much support from Cory and my family—

everyone pitches in to help me balance it all. My ideal day would start with an easy morning dropoff, fitting in a workout, heading straight to the office, and finishing early enough to pick up the kids, enjoy an early dinner, and have some quality family time together!”

ADVICE FOR PARENTS SEEKING CLEAN SKINCARE

Lil’s biggest piece of advice for parents looking to switch to clean products? Read the labels and look beyond marketing.

“Really pay attention to the ingredients—look beyond the marketing claims,” she advises. “‘Clean’ and ‘natural’ can mean different things to different brands, so it’s important to read the labels and understand what’s actually in the products. I’d also recommend choosing products that are simple, effective, and truly free from unnecessary chemicals, especially when it comes to kids.”

Lil is dedicated to empowering parents to make informed decisions, and her products reflect this commitment to safety and simplicity.

Outside of work, Lil loves exploring her local community with her family. “When I'm not working, you'll likely find me exploring my local area— grabbing a coffee at Good Day Somerton Park or Jetty Road Brighton and then heading down to the beach! (I also can't deny my love for our local Westfield Marion, haha!)”

EXPANDING WITH PURPOSE

As for the future, Lil’s plans for Summer Skin are ambitious yet grounded in her commitment to quality and transparency.

“We're focused on expanding our product range with more clean, effective skincare solutions that align with our commitment to quality and transparency,” she says.

“I want Summer Skin to continue setting a standard in the industry for genuinely clean, results-driven skincare. In the next few years, I see us growing our community further in Australia, introducing more targeted products, expanding our sunless tanning range and maybe even exploring familyfriendly options. My goal is for Summer Skin to be a trusted go-to for anyone looking for safe, highperformance skincare they can truly rely on.”

15 YEARS STRONG

Celebrating the Foster & Kinship Carers who make all the difference

Looking back at 15 incredible years of Key Assets in South Australia, I’m filled with so much gratitude for the dedication and pure heart our Foster and Kinship Carers give to children and young people every day. We celebrated this huge milestone with our 15th Anniversary Gala Dinner at the Adelaide Oval, and what a night it was! It was all about honouring the amazing people who give their all to make a differenceand giving them a chance to kick back, let their hair down, and soak up some well-deserved fun. The whole night was a perfect reflection of the love and support they share with so many.

Dive into Summer Safely

With the warmer weather upon us and as families venture out to beaches, rivers and local swimming pools it is imperative that we instill in our children the skills they need to safely enjoy our Australian summer. Consistently exposing our children to the water in a controlled environment is fundamental to ensuring our children are safer and more knowledgeable around the water.

Jodie Oddy was an absolute legend host, and we were fortunate to have Hon. Katrine Hildyard MP and Felicity Graham, CEO of Fostering Change Australia, with us. Felicity’s truth telling words about her own experience in care and the impact of carers had everyone feeling emotional.

“The Gala Dinner was a truly unforgettable evening, enriching meaningful connections among individuals driven by a common goal, celebrating shared successes.” – Lorraine Joy, Therapeutic Foster Carer

“So much of our role as Carers is about the needs of the beautiful children entrusted in our care. In order to care well for them, we must also practice self-care too. It was so amazing to have the opportunity at the KAASA Gala to share in a wonderful celebration of fun, glam, great laughs and delicious food, all whilst connecting with others and making fantastic memories. It was truly special.” – Lauren Burke, Foster Carer

We are beyond lucky to have a community of carers who show up with open hearts and open homes, year after year.

As we celebrate this awesome 15-year journey, we know there’s still work to do. There are so many children and young people out there in South Australia who need a safe home and someone to believe in them. If you have ever considered making a difference, now is the time! We’d love for you to think about becoming a foster carer with Key Assets Australia!

To all our incredible carers: thank you, thank you, thank you! You show us every day what it means to create a home full of kindness and support.

Understanding and managing the rising cost of living

Everywhere you look, it’s all about the rising cost of living. Families, businesses, governments are all under pressure to deal with, combat or save us from the rising cost of living.

For families, even those managing ok in these times, the stress of the constant negative narrative can be overwhelming. This impacts our children as well, who overhear conversations or news reports about struggling families, growing homelessness and your favourite café closing.

Economics has long recognised that it’s the relative position that people care most about. This means that if those around you appear to be doing ‘better,’ you tend to feel worse off, no matter how you are faring in an objective sense.

Thus, our environment has a large impact on our outlook and well-being. It can lead to feelings of concern that permeate the entire family. One of the best defences we have against feelings of anxiety and overall gloom is to take control of what we can by being proactive. After all, the best defence is a good offence.

We all know that making a budget is an important part of family planning and an empowering way to feel in control. However, expenses change from month-to-month and it’s often hard to categorise items. So these hurdles can stop us from getting our finances organised. But don’t let perfection be the enemy of good.

Understanding how you’re spending your money goes a long way in making high quality decisions about where you can save. And doing this, to the best extent possible, around your kids shows them this is normal and important, like brushing your teeth or getting enough sleep. This then sets them up with good budgeting awareness and habits they take into adulthood.

To start, export a few months of transactions from your bank to a spreadsheet. Go through each expense, labelling it with categories like groceries, school, mortgage/rent, entertainment,

The value of connection

Every time you talk or play with your baby or child, it’s an opportunity for them to learn and connect with the world around them. Building your child’s skills starts with a strong sense of connection. Here are some ways to strengthen that bond:

Validate their feelings

When children experience big emotions, they just want to feel seen, heard, and supported. Sometimes, a child’s reaction or feelings about a situation might not align with those of the adults in their lives. This can lead to the child's feelings being dismissed, leaving them feeling confused or even more upset. Children’s feelings are valid and deserve respect. When your child shares their feelings with you:

Give them your full attention and listen.

Acknowledge their feelings and show understanding, e.g., “Oh, that must have been so frustrating for you!”

Help them work through their feelings.

etc. Then, sort by labels and sum each category, but don’t worry about being too precise. This gives a clear view of where your money is going and shows each category’s percentage of total spending. Small expenses can add up, offering insights on where to cut back if needed.

In the meantime, summer holidays are a great time to get outside and enjoy some free activities across Adelaide and regional SA. Parklands, beaches, hiking trails, skateparks all provide an opportunity to stay active and not feel harddone-by when you might need to cut back on a trip away during these school holidays. Plus, with some budgeting tips in hand, you might be able to start saving for a family holiday in the new year!

If it’s a no, how could it be a yes?

Co-regulate

Children experience intense emotions many times throughout the day, and it’s unrealistic to expect them to understand and process these feelings on their own. They need the adults in their lives to sit with them in these moments and provide the language, tools, and support to help them regulate. Children first learn self-regulation by being supported through co-regulation. They can't achieve self-regulation without first experiencing it alongside a caring adult.

Make time for play and let your child take the lead

Play is how children learn. Set aside time each day to play with your child and let them decide what and how they play. Get down on the floor with them to show you’re engaged and interested in their ideas. Sometimes, your child may want you to join the play; other times, they may prefer you to simply watch. If you’re not directly involved in the play, you can talk about what you see happening or suggest ideas. Your child might take on your suggestions—or they might not—and that’s okay.

Look

for

the little things

A small gesture, a fleeting look, a smile, a noise, reaching out, moving closer or away, tapping, or banging an object—these are all ways your child might be communicating. Pay attention to these subtle cues and respond to them. Model the words or language you think your child might be trying to express in those moments.

Or what part of your child’s idea could you say yes to? Are you saying no to something, like playing with glitter or playdough, just because it could make a mess? Could you turn this into a yes?

For example, you could allow glitter or playdough play outside instead. Consider how often your child might hear “no” or “stop” throughout the day. Instead, try offering alternatives, like, “We don’t have time to go to the playground today, but we can go after school tomorrow” instead of, “No, we’re not going to the playground today.”

If you have concerns about your child’s communication development, speak to your CAFS nurse during your child’s development checks, consult your GP about accessing a Medicare Plan for private services, or give us a call. We’re happy to chat!

The school photos have been stuffed, still in their cardboard folders, in a drawer for years.

I’m too embarrassed to calculate how many. Grace, the eldest, graduated three years ago.

Some of them have made it out of the folders. The cutest ones, the ones with missing teeth or cute fun buns and ribbons. The ones where wasn’t in a rush for work that morning and actually did their hair.

Some have been stuck on the fridge, slotted into a wallet or passed onto the grandparents, who diligently stick them in an album.

Then there’s the stack of school yearbooks gathering dust on the bookshelf next to some parenting books that have sat there optimistically for years.

The Instagram algorithm must have known that guilt was creeping in.

Because among the targeted pop-up ads for anti-ageing eye creams, car vacuum cleaners, and bras for small-chested women was one entitled My School Days.

It was an album designed specifically to proudly display your child’s progressive decline from adorable to awkward adolescence.

The algorithm had me in its grasp. clicked the link. It said BACK IN STOCK. A clever marketing tool that promotes an urgency to purchase lest it sell out again because a parent who cares more about their child than you added to cart while you were still weighing up the cost of postage.

Then, when saw that the method of showcasing the annual photos was to stick them in with those pesky little blue photo dots, was out. Have you ever tried to work with those bad boys before? They are more likely to stick to your finger than the page.

But the seed had been planted. The time had come for me to find an aesthetically pleasing album that would position me as the organised yet sentimental mother that had always aspired to be if pursuing a career, fighting the patriarchy etc. had not got in the way.

So down the rabbit hole of online shopping for albums I went.

I settled on one with the old school sticky plastic pages that you peel back. I could work with that. Then I paid extra (what a sucker) to get the girl’s names monogrammed in different colours on the front.

I was late to this party but was coming in hot with the good champagne.

The albums’ arrival coincided with the girls going away for a few days for school holidays so I busied myself with my special project.

Open Day FOR

ENROL 2025

began by sorting the photos by child, then lined them up on the lounge room floor, year by year, from Kindy onwards.

Then I poured meticulously through each yearbook, scissors poised, to cut out any evidence of my child’s participation in school life. Choir, Book Week, Sports Day, Swimming Carnival, reading a book below their capability on a beanbag in the library, dressed up in a kimono, I snipped them all out like an avid Scrapbooker from way back.

It took me hours and hours. I could have caught up on The Bear.

Until finally the floor played host to a yearly snapshot of the children. How their face shape and hairstyle had changed, the way their smiles went from wide and uninhibited to shy and selfconscious.

cried for their childhoods.

waited for the girls to return home so we could stick them in together and reminisce about whether or not they liked their teacher that year.

was so smug.

A week later Frankie, the youngest, came home from school and said this year’s school photos had just been delivered to the classroom and hers was not among them. FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER WE HAD FORGOTTEN TO ORDER THEM.

Her perfect album would have a gaping hole where Year Seven should have been.

must chase that up…

STRESS FREE SCHOOL HOLIDAYS AND FAMILY VACATIONS

Strategies for maintaining family harmony

Okay I wasn’t entirely realistic with this title – but now I have your attention, could there be a better way to navigate the school holidays and travelling with children? Of course there is.

MEET YOUR CHILDREN WHERE THEY ARE AT (AND BE ADAPTABLE AND FLEXIBLE WHERE NECESSARY)

When you plan a holiday, it’s only natural to want to immerse in as many of the opportunities and benefits of travel as possible. If your plans don’t match your child’s ability to keep up with them, this can lead to exhaustion, overwhelm and emotionality. When children whine and complain about holiday plans, it’s rarely that they are ungrateful, (even though it feels that way). It’s usually a sign they’ve reached their limits. Children can only cope with a certain number of new things each day. Introverts and more sensitive children need even more time to recharge away from people and places, to reset their stamina to step out of their comfort zone again, for another new experience.

SET SCREEN TIME LIMITS AHEAD

Travel and school holidays can make it tempting to rely on screens, especially for those long car rides or flights. While screens are useful distractions, too much time on them can lead to overstimulation and mood swings. Set screen-time expectations before your trip or holiday begins, and aim to balance screen use with other activities like drawing, reading, or family games. The longer you hold off on screens each day, the easier it is to keep kids engaged socially and actively. Every family’s needs differ, so use screens as suits you best.

SET CLEAR (AND REALISTIC) EXPECTATIONS

Family life isn’t meant to be steady and stress free all the time. The ups and downs of family life are essential for providing our children with practice for relationships, mutual respect, empathy, repairing conflict and emotional regulation. Family life is practice for adult life and our children are so early into their experience of being a person, they are meant to struggle and make mistakes.

Before the holidays start, take time to work out what your children’s strengths and difficulties are. Then set some healthy limits, and make sure what you are expecting of them is fair for their age and realistic for their developmental abilities. When you are happy with your plan, make your expectations clear to your child. Your structure, routine, boundaries, and expectations will help them navigate the change in routine and structure. Setting clear expectations in advance helps children and teenagers feel secure, especially when delivered in a compassionate and relaxed way. Consider using a visual schedule, especially for younger, more anxious, or neurodivergent children, which research shows can reduce anxiety by providing predictability.

Giving children age-appropriate choices fosters their independence and sense of responsibility.

For many children, especially those who are neurodivergent, routine changes can be unsettling. Research suggests sticking to familiar routines as much as possible, like keeping consistent sleep and mealtimes. For those children who might struggle with adjusting, use social stories or talk about the changes ahead of time. If a late night is planned, discuss it and ensure a rest day follows so children have time to recharge.

MANAGE YOUR OWN STRESS AND EMOTIONS

ENCOURAGE PHYSICAL ACTIVITY

Extended periods of sitting in cars, planes and even just around the house, can lead to pent-up energy. According to research on childhood development, physical activity is essential for children’s well-being and can help prevent irritability. If you’re driving, plan frequent stops where children can move around. During flights, walk up and down the aisle with them when allowed. At your destination, prioritize activities that allow children to be active. At home during the school holidays, support your child to find modes of movement that they find meaningful and enjoyable so that regular movement doesn’t feel like a chore. Remember, you are the parent and your boundaries and expectations about balancing their days to include movement are perfectly reasonable, even if they complain about it.

Research in family psychology underscores that children are sensitive to parents' emotions. Our children borrow our calm, to calm themselves when they are upset. During the holidays, disruptions are inevitable, but modelling patience and staying calm can help children do the same. Parenting isn’t always easy, and if being calm doesn’t come easily to you, check out ‘Unmad’ where you can find simple, evidence-based ways to handle parenting through your child’s meltdowns, like a boss.

Our team is excited to create endless possibilities for your child in 2025! But for now, take some time to rest and relax before school starts againyou deserve it!

Build the perfect smoothie

Creating the perfect smoothie is as simple as mixing a few key ingredients that blend great taste with balanced nutrition. Start with a base like water, coconut water, or milk for hydration. Add fruits like berries, bananas, or mango for natural sweetness and vitamins. For an extra boost of nutrients, toss in a handful of mildflavoured greens like spinach or zucchini. Balance it all out with a source of protein—think Greek yogurt, nut butter, or protein powder, and add healthy fats or fibre, like chia or flax seeds, for lasting energy. With this basic formula, you’ll have a smooth, delicious drink that’s as nourishing as it is refreshing

Á Base Liquid: Choose from water, coconut water, milk, or plant-based milk.

Á Fruits: Berries, bananas, mango, or apples.

Á Vegetables: Spinach, zucchini, cucumber, or carrots (for hidden veggies).

Á Protein: Greek yogurt, nut butter, protein powder, or chia seeds.

Á Boosters: Flax seeds, hemp seeds, or honey for added nutrients.

Hidden veggies for picky eaters

Getting kids to eat their veggies can be a challenge, but smoothies make it easy to sneak in extra nutrients without them noticing! Mildtasting greens like spinach and zucchini blend seamlessly into fruit-based smoothies, so they’ll go undetected. Try adding a handful of spinach to a berry smoothie for a nearly invisible nutrient boost or frozen cauliflower for a creamy texture and extra fibre. Carrots add a natural sweetness that pairs perfectly with mango or orange, while avocado can make any smoothie ultra-smooth and rich in healthy fats. With a few sneaky additions, your smoothie can pack a hidden veggie punch that’s both nutritious and delicious!

y Leaker @nutrition_with_carly

TIP: Try to balance carbohydrates (fruits) with protein and fats for a more sustained energy release.

Á Spinach: Blends well into berry smoothies and is nearly tasteless.

Á Zucchini: Adds creaminess and nutrients without a strong flavour.

Á Carrots: Slightly sweet and easily masked by orange or mango flavours.

Á Cauliflower: Frozen cauliflower makes the smoothie thick and creamy without an overpowering taste.

Smoothies are the perfect solution for keeping kids cool, hydrated, and fuelled through the summer. By mixing fruits, hidden veggies, and a few nutritious extras, you can create balanced, flavoursome drinks that deliver essential vitamins, minerals, and energy in every sip. With endless customisation options, smoothies offer something for every taste, making them a winwin for parents and kiddos. So, next time you’re looking for a quick, nutritious option, grab those summer fruits, sneak in some greens, and blend up a refreshing treat that’ll keep kids happy and healthy all season long!

The ultimate post-swim care for active kids

Swimming is a fantastic activity for kids, offering fun, exercise, and skill development. However, the aftermath of regular swim classes or summer days at the beach can be less enjoyable—chlorine and copper in swimming pools, as well as salt and impurities in ocean water can leave the hair and skin feeling dry and irritated.

z Clinically proven: SwimProtect 2-in-1 has been proven in laboratory testing to effectively remove chlorine and copper, ensuring its effectiveness in eliminating these common swimming pool contaminants.

z Skin safe & tear free: 100% of products in the Little Étoile Care range are dermatologically tested and safe for sensitive skin. In addition, SwimProtect 2-in-1 has been clinically tested for eye sensitivity, making it ideal for children who are learning to wash their own hair—thanks to its tear-free formula, eye stings are a thing of the past.

z 91% naturally derived ingredients: SwimProtect 2-in-1 has been expertly formulated using natural ingredients such as aloe vera, herbal honey, and brown rice extract to care for your children's sensitive skin and hair. 5 WAYS TO KEEP YOUR KIDS COOL AND SAFE THIS SUMMER

After a long, cold winter, I’m more than ready to embrace summer and thaw out! For our family, summer is all about beach days, splashing by the pool, and backyard barbies. But with the sunshine comes the challenge of keeping the kids cool and safe. Babies and toddlers are extra sensitive to things like sunburn, dehydration, and overheating. Here are 5 easy ways to keep your little ones protected this summer, plus a handy guide on spotting dehydration.

1. Dress for the heat

One of the easiest ways to protect your kids from the summer heat is by dressing them in sun-smart clothes. Lightweight, loose-fitting clothes made from breathable fabrics like cotton are perfect for hot days. Light-coloured clothes are even better, as they reflect the sun’s rays rather than absorbing them.

While singlets and spaghetti strap dresses may be cute, they don’t offer much sun protection. Consider t-shirts or tops with short sleeves instead. And if you’re off to the pool or beach, the long-sleeved rashies are great for keeping your little ones protected from the sun.

Don’t forget a wide-brimmed hat and sunnies to protect their eyes from UV rays. And finally, kids copy what they see—so make sure you’re dressing sun-smart too!

2. Slop on the sunscreen

Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world. UV damage that builds up in childhood is a major risk factor for skin cancer later in life, so it’s crucial to protect kids early.

When the UV index hits 3 or higher (you can check this using the SunSmart or BOM app), slop on a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30. Apply it generously—about a teaspoon for each arm, leg, and face— and make sure to do this 20 minutes before

going outside. Reapply every two hours, especially after swimming or sweating.

If your baby is under 6 months old, sunscreen isn’t generally recommended because their skin is so sensitive. Keep them in the shade, dress them in lightweight long sleeves and make sure they have their wide-brimmed hat on.

3. Set up a cool play zone at home

Staying cool doesn’t mean staying indoors all summer. You can still enjoy outdoor play by creating a cool and shaded area at home. Set up a shaded play space with an umbrella, pop-up tent, or even a sheet over the clothesline, and let your child enjoy the fresh air without being in direct sunlight.

Water play is a great way to keep kids cool—whether it’s playing in a kiddie splash pool, using a water table, or running through a sprinkler (our fave!). Be sure to supervise closely around water, even if it’s shallow.

4. Head to air-conditioned public spaces

On scorching hot days when your home’s air conditioning isn’t quite cutting it, or the kids are going stir-crazy from being cooped up all day, consider heading out to other air-conditioned spaces. Public places like shopping centres, libraries, or community centres are perfect for cooling off without breaking the bank.

Most libraries and community centres offer free or low-cost activities, such as Story Time or playgroups, which can keep your kids entertained while you all stay cool. Many centres also run school holiday programs with age-appropriate activities. Head to your local library or community centre and see what they have on offer!

5. Keep the cool drinks flowing

Keeping kids hydrated is key. Encourage them to drink water regularly throughout the day, especially if they’ve been running around or playing outside. Fun water bottles or cups with straws can encourage them to drink more. If they aren’t fans of plain water, try making a kid-friendly “punch” together. One of our favourites is adding sliced watermelon and strawberries to a jug of water and keeping it chilled in the fridge. This adds a delicious taste to the water and makes it more enticing to drink. We also love making our own ice blocks using blended fruit mixed with water. Have a go and see which flavours your kids love most!

SPOTTING AND MANAGING DEHYDRATION IN KIDS

Dehydration can happen quickly in little ones, especially on hot days. Here’s how to tell if your child might be dehydrated and what to do.

Signs of mild dehydration:

Á Dizziness or light-headedness

Á Dark yellow or brown urine (should be pale yellow)

Á Fewer wet nappies or bathroom trips

Á Dry lips, mouth, or throat

Á Nausea or headaches

Signs of severe dehydration:

Á Extreme thirst

Á Lethargy, pale skin, sunken eyes, or no tears when crying

Á Breathing quickly or having a fast heartbeat

Á Irritability or confusion

What to do:

For mild dehydration, offer water or an oral rehydration solution like Gastrolyte or Pedialyte. These are also available in delicious icy-poles! Avoid sugary drinks like soft drinks or sports drinks, which can make dehydration worse.

When to get help:

Á Babies under 6 months should always be seen by a doctor if you suspect they’re dehydrated- even if it’s mild.

Á If your child shows signs of severe dehydration, chat to your GP or head straight to the Emergency Department.

z 1 chorizo, halved and thinly sliced

z 200g peeled green prawns, halved lengthways

z 150g sugar snap peas, trimmed

z ¼ cup parsley leaves

Aioli

z ¼ cup whole egg mayonnaise

z ¼ cup sour cream

z ½ clove garlic

z 1 tablespoon lemon juice

z 1 tablespoon mint, finely chopped

z Salt flakes and freshly ground black pepper

Lemongrass Chicken Noodle Salad

Serves: 2 | Prep time: 20 mins

Marinating time: 1–24 hours | Cook time: 10 mins

METHOD

1. For the aioli, combine mayonnaise, sour cream, garlic, lemon juice, mint, salt and pepper together, stirring to combine. Set aside until required.

3. Heat olive oil in a large non-stick frying pan over a medium heat. Add chorizo and cook for 4 minutes or until golden. Remove from the pan with a slotted spoon. Add prawns to the same pan and cook for 2 minutes or until opaque. Remove from pan and set aside.

4. Bring a small saucepan of water to the boil and cook sugar snap peas for 1 minute before refreshing under cold water.

5. To finish salad, add remaining aioli and 2/3 of the cooked chorizo, prawns, sugar snap peas and parsley, tossing to combine. Place salad on a serving platter and sprinkle over the remaining 1/3 of the chorizo, prawns, sugar snap peas and parsley.

2. Place prepared potatoes in a large saucepan covered in cold water over a medium heat. Bring to the boil and cook for 5 minutes or until tender. Drain and place hot potatoes in a large mixing bowl with ½ the aioli, tossing gently to combine. Set aside to cool completely. spudlite.com.au

INGREDIENTS

Á 2 chicken thigh fillets, left whole

Á 120g vermicelli rice noodles

Á 2 tablespoons neutral oil

(e.g. grapeseed, vegetable, canola)

Á 120g leafy salad mix

Á 1 carrot, shredded

Á 1 continental cucumber, shredded

LEMONGRASS MARINADE

Á 30g fresh lemongrass, FINELY chopped

(the stalks of lemongrass tend to be quite tough. Finely chopping them for a marinade like this ensures a seamless flavour experience)

Á 3 garlic cloves, finely chopped

Á juice of 1 lime

Á 2 tablespoons fish sauce

Á 2 tablespoons soy sauce

Á 2 tablespoons sugar

Á 1 tablespoon cornflour

Á 1⁄2 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda

(shhhh...this is the secret ingredient that your favourite takeout uses to tenderise the meat.

It’s a game changer but totally optional!)

DRESSING

Á 2 tablespoons fish sauce

Á 2 tablespoons sugar

Á juice of 1⁄2 lime

Á 80 ml (1⁄3 cup) boiling water

Á 1 garlic clove, finely chopped

Á 1⁄2 small red chilli, finely chopped

TO SERVE

Á fresh coriander or parsley

METHOD

1. In a bowl, combine the ingredients for the lemongrass marinade. Add the chicken to the marinade and use your hands to ensure the chicken is evenly coated before covering the bowl with plastic wrap and placing it in the fridge for 1–24 hours (the longer the better).

2. In a small bowl or jar, combine the ingredients for the dressing. Feel free to adjust the measurements to your liking – Rule #6: Season, Taste, Season, Taste. like my Vietnamese dressing quite bold in flavour, so I tend to add more sugar, fish sauce and lime to the same water ratio. (We need to use boiling water here to ensure the sugar dissolves.) Once you’re happy with the flavours, place the dressing in the fridge until you’re ready to serve.

3. Once the chicken has finished marinating, bring a large saucepan of water to the boil and cook the vermicelli noodles for 3-ish minutes until al dente Drain and rinse the noodles under cold water until completely cool. Al dente describes pasta or rice that still has a slight bite and firmness to it. It adds texture and ensures your dish doesn’t turn to mush.

4. Heat the oil in a frying pan over medium heat and cook the chicken on both sides until golden brown and cooked through, about 4–6 minutes on each side depending on the thickness. Refrain from flipping the chicken too many times. We want to achieve a nice colour on the surface of the chicken without burning it and leaving the middle raw. In the last 30 seconds of cooking time, add the remaining marinade in the bowl and allow it to caramelise and glaze the chicken. Remove the chicken from the pan and allow to rest on a plate.

5. Assemble the leafy greens, noodles, carrot, cucumber and chicken in serving bowls. Top with the dressing and the coriander or parsley and serve.

KIDDO CORNER!

Henry Reads

Before reading Railhead by Phillip Reeve, I didn’t know what to expect, but it didn’t take long for me to get hooked. The world of Railhead is incredible and totally pulls you in with a fresh take on sci-fi. The K-Bahn, a futuristic train network that spans the galaxy, is so cool that I can only hope we’ll get to ride something like it someday!

Resident Kiddo Book Reviewer: Henry Williams, 12 years

Hi, I’m Henry. I love reading (I always have a book in my hand, except when I’m eating dinner but that’s only because my mum won’t let me!), playing Minecraft and archery. I have a twin sister and a little sister who drive me kinda crazy but I love them anyway (shhh...don’t tell them that).

Phillip Reeve has a real talent for creating something different while keeping all the classic elements of sci-fi. Instead of the usual robots and spaceships, he builds a whole universe with sentient trains, fascinating planets, and interesting characters. Reeve’s creativity shines through in every chapter, taking readers on a journey that’s both huge and surprisingly relatable. He creates a world that’s so easy to get lost in, with exciting twists and enough mystery to keep you glued to the pages.

I don’t want to spoil anything because part of the fun of Railhead is discovering the surprises for yourself. But will say, if you like adventure, mystery, and a bit of rebellion, this book is definitely for you. Zen Starling, the main character, is super relatable and gets pulled into an epic adventure that challenges him in ways he never saw coming. Along the way, he meets some unforgettable friends and enemies, making every chapter exciting.

The best part is, there’s more! Railhead is just the first book in a trilogy, so if you love it as much as I did, there are two more adventures waiting. Plus, if you’re new to Phillip Reeve, he’s also the author of other amazing books like the Mortal Engines

Summer Find-a-word

series, which has its own awesome worlds and stories.

Overall, Railhead is a must-read for anyone who loves sci-fi or just wants to dive into an awesome, totally unique world. Phillip Reeve has created something really special, and hope you have as much fun on this adventure as I did. Happy reading!

The fascinating sensory world of young children…and the adult’s role

Have you ever watched closely how a two year old observes their world intensely: twirling a twig in their hand, picking up and feeling a dust bunny on the floor, the sound of the vacuum – all everyday sensations that adults don’t give much attention too, but for the young child, these sensations are experienced intensively. Their brains are learning about the qualities of the world surrounding them and their bodies’ responses to this world. They are learning about touch, sound, vision,

Little children’s developing neurological systems are primed to learn from and respond to their sensory surroundings. This includes their home, community and care/schooling environments. Every moment of the day is taken up by absorbing these sensations and for the developing brain to make sense of the sensations. This includes watching mum moving around the house, their sibling navigating a tricky swing on the playground, the leaves moving in the trees, the feeling of a breeze on their skin. It is important for the developing child to experience as many of these sensations as possible, to enable their neurological systems to grow.

It also includes more overwhelming sensations like the loud noise of the vacuum, lawn mower or a barking dog. At certain times of the day when they are tired, these sensations can be too loud and overwhelming for them and they can easily become overstimulated and display dysregulated behaviour. This can be triggered by being hungry, physically uncomfortable, unwell or just tired at the end of a day or close to nap time. These sensations are just too much for any young developing brain to cope with at certain times of the day.

When young children become dysregulated, the adult in the child’s life is an important part of this sensory environment. When you lower your voice, speak slowly, simply and calmly, as well as lower yourself to their height and remove them from the sensory overwhelming experience, you provide less sensory stimulation and allow the overwhelmed child to be able to cope with this situation. If you speak loudly, show anger and use large body movements, the child becomes even more overstimulated and upset. By showing calmness, the child also learns by looking at you and copying your example. If you become upset, they will become even more upset. Try to anchor your child in these moments of upheaval and give them a safe, calm space to regain their composure.

What an amazing thing to observe: a young child experiencing all the sensations surrounding them! Watch out for these moments next when you sit back with a coffee and your young child is playing in front of you.

Safe online spaces

With research showing that three-quarters of Australian teens with disability are exposed to potentially harmful online content—compared to a national average of 62%—the need for better online safety resources has never been clearer. Responding to this challenge, Scope, in collaboration with the eSafety Commissioner’s Office, has developed new tools to help keep these vulnerable young people safer online.

The Be Safe Online resources, created over an 18-month period, are designed to support young people with disability, as well as their parents, guardians, and carers, to engage in meaningful conversations about online safety. The development process involved direct input from young people with disabilities, their families, carers, educators, and subject matter experts, ensuring the resources are specifically tailored to meet their needs.

Focus groups conducted by Scope revealed a common challenge: while parents, carers, and educators are often aware of online risks, many lack the confidence and tools to effectively communicate about safe digital practices. Scope’s new resources aim to bridge this gap, making it easier for all involved to navigate the complexities of the online world.

The Be Safe Online suite includes:

Easy English resources: These materials are designed for people with communication disabilities and low literacy levels, covering essential topics like staying safe from scams, understanding online consent, and maintaining a healthy online balance.

Communication tools: A communication book and keyword sign resources help facilitate conversations about online safety, making reporting to the eSafety Commissioner more accessible.

eLearning module: This module is tailored for educators and trainers, providing guidance on delivering communicationaccessible content to their audiences.

“The ability to access digital platforms is vital for young people with disabilities,” says Scope CEO, Kate MacRae. “The internet offers opportunities to participate in communities and build connections in ways that might not be easily accessible in the physical world. However, these young people are disproportionately at risk of online abuse and exposure to inappropriate content. It’s crucial that we provide resources that support both them and their parents or carers to navigate this space confidently.”

The resources have been funded through the eSafety Commissioner’s Online Safety Grants Program. Scope hopes they will empower young people with disabilities to explore the online world with greater confidence, while providing parents and carers with the tools they need to offer support. For more information, visit the Be Safe Online page at Scope's website.

By offering practical and accessible tools, Scope’s new initiative aims to make a meaningful difference in the lives of young people with disabilities, ensuring their online experiences are safer and more positive.

Kaiko Fidgets, an Aussie, family-owned business created by Kai, who knows firsthand what it’s like to navigate the world with sensory sensitivities, is reshaping the way we think about fidget tools for teens. Kai’s own journey started at age 11 when he struggled to find sensory tools that met his needs without drawing unwanted attention. Together with his mum Jo, who has an occupational therapy background and a deep understanding of sensory needs, Kai began creating tools that could offer both comfort and discretion.

Kai, who lives with anxiety and is both autistic and dyslexic, started making his own fidgets in 2017 at the age of 11. After being teased at school for using colourful, "kiddie-like" fidgets, he was determined to create something cooler, more stylish and suitable for himself. So, he turned to metal – and soon, instead of teasing, he began receiving requests for his designs.

What makes Kaiko Fidgets stand out is their focus on practicality and accessibility. Their range, from textured rollers to calming necklaces, is thoughtfully designed to support mental health, ease anxiety, and improve focus, all while fitting discreetly into daily life. The Kaiko team, largely neurodivergent themselves, brings a unique perspective to their work, focusing on products that genuinely reflect the sensory needs and tastes of adults and older teens — a market often overlooked in the world of fidgets.

With a strong sense of community, Kaiko values customer input, incorporating feedback into new designs that address specific, unmet needs. It's a refreshingly inclusive approach in the sensory tools market, aiming to empower individuals to use fidget tools wherever they feel they need them, without compromise. Kaiko Fidgets shows that sensory support can be both effective and subtle, making a tangible difference for those looking to manage everyday stress and focus in their own way.

With the support of his parents, Kai began selling his creations at local markets. It didn’t take long to realise how great the demand was. What began as a solution for his own needs quickly evolved into a business providing sensory support to teens and adults alike.

While the success of the business is exciting, the biggest impact for Kai has been the boost in his self-esteem – a transformation that has truly changed his life.
