The Magical Verse

Chapter:2 Just The Beginning

They both were petrified to their spots. It felt like their body had become immobile. One of the five cloaked men spoke in a heavy and gloomy voice, "I hope you are ready for what is going to come your way." With those words he fell silent but neither Nikhil nor Ajeet could fathom what he meant by them. Suddenly, that same man pulled out from inside his cloak some vile thing which looked like a replica of a grenade save the fact that it was engraved with some weird markings. Nikhil somehow garnered the courage to speak and mumbled to Ajeet, "This feels like the end, doesn't it?" "Yeah, it sure does but you know the worst thing about my life is going to be that I died with you." "Huh! You and your facetiousness." The cloaked man shrieked with animosity, "It will be good for you both if you keep your moths zipped." Ajeet and Nikhil grasped each other's hand and shut tight their eyes as the man raised the grenade high and was just about to explode it. In that short moment Nikhil relived his whole life once again. He despised the fact that his life was going to be such a short one, yet he couldn't overlook the fact that it also comprised of happy moments, times when he rejoiced the fact that he was who he was. Albeit he didn't meet his parents but he never had dearth of love. There were mournful times but there also were those frolic days. His dreams were left unfinished but it was evident that his ambitions needed more breaths to be fulfilled than Nikhil had. In that moment, he perceived the harsh and bitter yet lovable and jovial thing that life is and steadied himself to meet the end of his journey. Nikhil heard the blast that the grenade caused and then he couldn't feel Ajeet's hand. He knew that he was dead but he could still feel himself. He apprehended that he was now in the world of the dead and with immense anticipation as well as fear of what comes next he opened his eyes and was confounded by the view which met his eyes.

14

He still stood where he was earlier but there was no sign of those ďŹ ve men. This was a matter of joy but what made his heart feel heavy was the disappearance of Ajeet as well. He was frantic and didn't know what to do. He scoured the whole park screaming out Ajeet's name all the while with the hope that he will be lying unconscious somewhere around there only but his fears came true, Ajeet was nowhere to be found. He also tried ringing his phone but it was lying there in the park. All of Nikhil's efforts were in vain and with a supremely troubled mind and soul he went to his car and started driving back home. Nikhil couldn't discern what to do, he was at the end of his wits. The road seemed desolate to him, the night felt melancholic and it felt like everything is there just to haunt him, even the pettiest things seemed ghastly to him. He felt attenuated and lethargic. He couldn't come to believe the fact that he had been bereaved of the only best friend that he ever had, that too in front of his eyes but he couldn't do anything to save him. He had failed him, he had failed his only best friend. At that moment his phone rang, it was Prajakta, Ajeet's sister. Nikhil didn't have even the slightest of ideas how he was going to answer her but somehow he garnered up the courage to talk to her. He pulled over the car and answered the phone. Prajakta instantly spoke, "Hey, Nik, are you guys still there? Have you looked at the time? It's over midnight now. Nik, are you there?" "Yeah, yeah, I am listening." "Where are you?" "I am on my way home." "Do you know where Ajeet is? I called him several times but he isn't picking up." Nikhil remembered that he hadn't picked up Ajeet's phone which meant it was still lying there. He said to Prajakta in a very low and despondent tone, "He won't pick up."

15

"But why?" Nikhil was so dumbstruck like he had never been before in his life so he said, "Meet me at that police station near your house." Prajakta had sensed something was very wrong so instead of asking any further questions she hung up the phone and hastened to the police station. There Nikhil gave his account of the events and the result was just as he had anticipated. The inspector remarked his description of the events as ridiculous and a children's fantasy. Nikhil couldn't do anything as he was not saying anything but the truth. The park was minutely examined. There were no signs of any explosion to corroborate with Nikhil's story but there also were no evidences against Nikhil. Never came any ransom call to suggest a kidnapping. The case was one of the most eccentric ones ever and nobody could reach to any logical explanation regarding the events of the night and the vanishing of Ajeet. Due to no proper evidences, the case was closed and Nikhil was declared innocent but that didn't do any good to Nikhil. People began considering him a maniac and maintained their distance from him. Prajakta also severed all ties with him which left Nikhil aloof in this mammoth merciless world. It's been ďŹ ve years since the day which shook Nikhil's whole world but the wounds still feel fresh as ever. Nikhil had lost the guts to come face to face with a live audience and so had the crowd, henceforth, he left stand-up and now wrote articles for magazines and newspapers. But what made him feel the worst was the absence of Ajeet. Nikhil felt hollow without him, he had forgotten the purpose of his existence and had no zeal inside him. All the happiness had been drained out of him but it was not the end for him. It's never the end until nature says so and that verdict hadn't been passed. It was just the beginning of troubles and obstacles in his once a normal life.

Story

An apple for Mrs. Dunkley The town of Cartleville like many other towns is full of wonderful families with children and pets. Children, who like most, really love summer vaca on and look forward to it with great longing. It's a friendly town. Neighbours delight in having children over and the li le boys and girls delight in abandon play. Tag and hide and go seek never grows old. There are no playgrounds, no back yards, pools or fruit trees off limits during the summer in Cartleville. Well, except one. The Dunkley's. Or, more specifically, Mrs Dunkley's yard and apple trees. Mrs Dunkley is a 67 year-old widower who lives alone since her husband passed and her only daughter, Mary, got married and moved far away. Her husband's best bud Colton, a golden fur ridgeback dog is her only companion most days. She s ll misses her husband and daughter very much, and has grown indifferent to her neighbours and their "busy body kids", as she o en refers to them. But what's most interes ng, is that Mrs Dunkley has the biggest most frui ul apple trees in the whole of Cartleville. One in par cular, the neighbours and all the children nicknamed Appletopia. It was tall and wide and sat at the front of the yard, where all passers-by could see, but never taste of. Except for some really brave kids, much like Kyle and Johnny. Ring leaders, you'd maybe call them. "Johnny, they're calling me", Kyle squeaked, gazing at Appletopia with his eyes as big and round as the fruits he desired. Kyle and Johnny were 7th graders in high school who just couldn't wait for the last bell on the last day of school. They were the best at every game of the kids in the neighbourhood and of course Mrs. Dunkley's favourite targets. Mrs. Dunkley knew the boys were o en tempted to sneakily enter her yard and climb Appletopia and she o en dared them to. Just so she could have the thrill of being mean. O en during the days, she'd peak through her living room window and whenever a brave boy or girl would climb her tree, she would dash to the back and Release Colton from his leash. Colton's job was then to stay at the base of the tree barking and jumping to scare the intruder now stuck. She would delight in such bliss whenever she happened to catch just one each summer. She'd laugh so hard un l it suited her to call Colton back and restrain him, so the terrified climber could come down. Kyle and Johnny knew this well and knew she was watching. They could feel her eyes peering through the window, looking for the next brave lad who dared to climb Appletopia."Johnny, you know, you've always been a faster runner than I am" Kyle jeered."But you're the crazy one, so this is right up your ally" Johnny replied. Both boys were equally intrigued at the thought of conquering Appletopia and making it out alive with the best apples Cartleville had to offer. What a story it would be to tell on the first day back at school?!

20

"That's it! I'm going in!" Kyle insisted. "This is the plan. We'll both go in and I'll climb. I'll throw the apples to you, so it'll be easier for me to get down" he con nued. "I don't know" Johnny mumbled. "Come on, I'm the one climbing!" Kyle replied, "If Colton gets out then you can run." "Ok fine, let's do it. But just know if I hear Colton coming, I'm not s cking around." Johnny stated. The two boys then made their way to Mrs. Dunkley's gate and as quietly as they could, slid the lock open. They could hear Colton's chains around back as he paced up and down and as they an cipated, Mrs. Dunkley was very much on watch from the living room. "Ah, brave li le ones aren't we?" she mu ered, with a deligh ul smile on her face. She knew just the perfect me to make her move. Just when the unsuspec ng intruder was far enough up the tree for Colton to make his way to the front and trap them. The two boys quietly made their way to Appletopia, and as planned, Kyle began to make his way up and started picking. Johnny nervously looked around and listened for any signs of Colton. Mrs. Dunkley waited for the right moment. She watched un l Kyle got as high as he needed to reach the most beau ful apples and began to make her way to the back. The boys could tell something was afoot. But Kyle kept throwing as much apples he could reach to Johnny. "Come on let's go!" Johnny began to shout "we have enough." Colton heard the boys and began to bark in a frenzy. He knew exactly what was happening and just what to do. If only Mrs. Dunkley would release him. This me, however, she didn't quite make it around to unleash him. While has ly making her way to him, Mrs. Dunkley bumped her knee on an old grandfather clock her husband had bought at a local yard sale many years before. She fell to the ground and began to scream for help, but the sound of Colton's barking almost drowned her pleas. Kyle and Johnny were by then almost through the gate when just on a whim, Kyle decided to express one small act of kindest. In a great hurry, he made his way to the front porch and place one of his choicest apples on Mrs. Dunkley's top step. As he placed the apple down and turned to leave, he heard Mrs. Dunkley cries for help. "Johnny, wait!" he called. "Are you crazy? Well, I know you are, but let's go!" Johnny replied. "No, she's inside." Kyle informed him. "Yes, and Colton will be out any second! Let's go!" Johnny insisted. "No wait, she's crying for help, I think she's hurt. I'm going in." Kyle replied as he made his way up the step and through Mrs. Dunkley's unlocked door. "Mrs. Dunkley?!" he cried, eagerly hoping to find her as Johnny stood at the gate, hoping Colton's .barking would con nue echoing from the back and not make its way out front. Kyle found Mrs. Dunkley si ng on the floor, holding her knee with her back pressed against the very clock that spoiled her plan. "Johnny!" he called, "come give me a hand." Johnny, dropping all the apples he had then ran inside in aid of Mrs. Dunkley. The boys li ed her from the ground and placed her in a chair nearby. They gave her water And even rubbed her hur ng knee. Before leaving, Kyle decided to take the apple he had thought to leave on her step and placed it in her hand. Without many words and a smile of gra tude, Mrs.Dunkley knew from then on, she had caring neighbours and friends in Johnny and Kyle.
