Interview

Author Interview Deepa Agarwal Q. First tell me something about yourself? I was born in the small town of Almora in Uttarakhand. My father was a doctor and my mother a school teacher. I was a voracious reader from my childhood. My school education was in Nainital and Lucknow, in boarding schools. After that I joined Allahabad University and did my M.A. in English. I worked as a lecturer in a Author and poet Deepa Agarwal college for a few years. Later, I took up writing as writes for both children and adults and has written over 50 a career and began by free-lancing for books till date. She won many newspapers and magazines. My first Published awards including NCERT work was a middle in the Hindustan Times. You National award for children can find out more about me on my literature. website www.deepaagarwal.net Q: Which was the first story that you ever wrote? Was it published or not? My first story, written during my college days, was titled “The Gold Necklace”. I didn’t send it for publication anywhere because I felt I was still learning how to write fiction. Q: You write specifically for children, why did you choose them as your readers? The majority of my books are for children, but I don’t write specifically for children. I have some books for adults as well—two short story collections, a biography, a collection of poetry and some translations. I entered this profession by writing for adults and only started Writing for children after I got a good response from children’s magazines and publishers. Even now I contribute short stories and poetry to journals and magazines as well as research papers in seminars.

Q: As you are a grandmother, do you tell stories to your grandchildren? I used to, but my grandchildren are growing up. Sometimes, I read to my youngest grandchild who is eight years old. Q: How did these stories and characters come to your mind? Many of my stories are based on my childhood experiences or incidents in the lives of my children or grandchildren. I get my ideas from the world around me. My recent book Blessed is a fantasy fiction on the theme of education for girls and was my response to the fact that even today people are opposed to education for girls. Q: Do you want to give any message for young readers and writers? My message is that you should read for pleasure, not because you are told you must read Books to gain knowledge. Select books that you personally enjoy, not because others are reading them. If you wish to become a writer, it is important to read as much as you can. Without reading a variety of books, you cannot become a good writer. Keep a diary, it’s good writing practice and learn to take honest criticism to improve your work. Also have faith in yourself. It’s not easy to get published and writers have to learn to cope with rejection. Q: Why did you prefer genres like mythology and history? Actually, my early books are all original fiction set in contemporary times. So is one of my recent books Friendship Stories. I began writing mythology in response to requests from publishers and one book led to another. The biographies I have written were also commissioned, as was The Teenage Diary of Noor Jahan. Caravan to Tibet and Journey to The Forbidden City are based on my own family history.

Story

Oli’s Ohh, OK Some little ones are not kids of many words, and that's fine. Even more, some Aren't very good at expressing their emotions well, and that's OK too. But some, are just, well, mean and that's not good! They don't get much more unfriendly than Oliver "Oli" Westbrook though. A 9-year-old with his very own brand of attitude, that even comes with a tag-line "Ohhh, OK", and he's never Slow to let anyone get it. Especially his little sister Tanni. Tanni ran through the front door one day filled with excitement. She could have hardly contain herself waiting for mom to pick her up from school, holding her shiny new trophy she had won. She had news she couldn't wait to share with Oli.Tanni made her way to the kitchen shouting "Oli! Oli! Where are you?! I got something to show you!" She ran to every room downstairs before making her way upstairs to his."Oli, I won an award!" she shouted bursting through his door. As much as she knew her brother rarely got excited for anything he didn't win or do, or anything that wasn’t about him for that matter, she was too excited to remember."What’s wrong with you?!" he exclaimed, knitting his brow, "Why so excited?" "I won an award today!" she replied. And with those cold words and in his unique style, Oliver replied "Ohhh, OK",shrugging his shoulder. "That's good I guess." Tanni's excitement quickly faded, being replaced by sibling disappointment. Tanni, like all Oliver's friends was by now use to his insensitive ways. Even mom was not too high up the ladder to feel his chills from time to time. They all knew the only thing that got Oliver excited, was anything about, well, Oliver. His grade four teacher Mrs. Keenan, was also all too familiar with Oliver's unbecoming manner. He'd broken her spirit quite a few times before. Most recently, last Teacher's Day, Oliver sat in his seat as the rest of his classmates formed a choir at the front of the class to serenade Mrs. Keenan with a song They wrote for her. When she asked him why he refused to join them, he simply said "I don't sing!" She continued and told him that as much as she enjoyed the rendition, she would have loved it even more if he was a part of it. And just as only Oliver would and could, he replied, "Ohhh, OK."Mrs Keenan was heartbroken, but still hopeful that Oliver could grow to learn how to be kind and caring for others and how his words made them feel She was determined to help him.Mrs. Keenan knew the only thing that got Oliver to open up was anything that applauded him. Anything that brought him attention and made him feel Special. Anything, like his upcoming birthday. It was a class tradition for Mrs Keenan and students to decorate the desk of a fellow classmate who was celebrating their birthday. Floating balloons, sparkles and a cupcake with a lighted candle was always present on the celebrant’s desk, before they arrived at school. And of course the first period would begin with the singing of n the birthday song shared with hugs and birthday wishes. To top it off, the school's Principal would always end the n Morning's announcement with his birthday wish for the boy or girl celebrating their special day, over the school intercom. So the whole school would know and join in the wishes.Oliver delighted in this and looked forward to it greatly each year. This year, however, he was in for an unexpected awakening. Oliver woke the morning of his birthday beaming with excitement."It's finally here!" He exclaimed. International Oliver day.His 10th birthday. He had so much expectations and looked forward to receiving all that was being prepared for him, or heThought. "I wonder what mom got me this year?" he thought to himself.

6

He rushed downstairs to find his mom and Tanni ,"Good morning." his mom greeted him. "Good morning!" he replied, with the biggest smile they'd seen from him in a very long time."So, Tanni what's up for the day?” Oliver's mom and Tanni were by now well aware of Mrs. Keenan's plans of teaching Oliver a little extra lesson."It's Wednesday so we have softball practice after school" Tanni replied. "I'll try to be early today to pick you up" Oliver's mom promised. "It's been really crazy at the office lately."Oliver started feeling a little left out of the conversation and just couldn't help but wonder why neither of them had acknowledged his birthday. "Mom, what day is today?" he asked. "It's Wednesday baby, Tanni just said it," she snickered."No, it's my birthday!" He blurted. "You forgot?!" "Oh wait, that's today?" His mom replied. "No I didn't, I, I, I did. It’s just been so busy at work lately and I thought I marked it on my calender, but I must have forgotten, I'm sorry Oli. I'll make it up by later today I promise."Oliver was heartbroken. "Ohhh, OK" he replied and for the first time, his Tagline had a whole new feeling. Oliver's disappointing birthday surprises didn't exactly end at breakfast, however. After all, there were lots to forward to at school that day. Oliver remained silent in the car the whole ride to school, with his hands folded and his lips pouting. He still couldn't believe his mom had forgotten his birthday. His hopes for the day started coming back the closer he got to school, nevertheless. He hopped out of the car the moment it stopped and ran off to class as fast as he could. Only yet to be again disheartened. Oliver quickly noticed that there were no balloons, no sparkles, and certainly no cupcakes on his desk."How could this be?" He thought to himself. The morning announcements also ended without mention of his name by the Principal and Mrs. Keenan began first-period like she would any other day. Oliver sat through first period much as he did in the car earlier. With his hands folded and lips pouting. He just couldn't believe how the day was turning out.Mrs. Keenan noticed his displeasure and decided to talk to him about it at the end of class."Oliver, you don't look so good, are you OK?" She asked. "No, I'm not. It's my birthday and it's like no one remembered" he replied. And With those very familiar words, Mrs. Keenan retorted "Ohhh, OK" knowing very well what was happening, "maybe things will turn around later today." Oliver was completely crushed. The day was nothing like he wanted. Mrs.Keenan had one last surprise up her sleeves, however. One that would be a lot Different from all he had received that day. That evening Mrs. Keenan and a few of Oliver's classmates gathered at his home for a birthday surprise he was not expecting. As much as she and his mom intended on teaching him a lesson on being selfless and kind to others, they wouldn't let the day end without celebrating his tenth birthday somehow. Oliver's mom returned home from dropping him and his sister off at school That day, to decorate the dining table much like he expected his classroom desk to be. She was also a little late to pick him up to allow Mrs. Keenan and his friends to get there for the big reveal. At the end of the evening and with the earlier let-downs still fresh in his mind, mom took the time to talk to Oliver about the true significance of treating others how he wanted to be treated. Enjoying the happiness of other's and being thoughtful of his words and their feelings. The End

Amma Tell Me....

Author: Bhakti Mathur Publisher: Anjana Publishing,Penguin India What really made you write these stories?

The motivation for the 'Amma Tell Me' Series was to tell my two children about the festivals I grew up celebrating and the stories I grew up hearing. The Indian festival of colors 'Holi' was round the corner. I was looking for a good book to explain the festival to my older son who was two years old then. I couldn't ind anything that I liked and got an idea to write one myself! I decided to make it a series and called it 'Amma Tell Me' Why do you think it is important for children to learn about religious places and people?

In a polarized world today with so much intolerance and violence in the name of religion and politics, it is important for children to know that religion does not create problems, people do. All religions are based on the concepts of love, kindness and generosity. The Dalai Lama was one asked, “What is your religion?” His reply was “My religion is kindness.” Kids need to know that being religious does not mean following rituals. It means being a good, kind person. It is as simple as that. And yes I feel parents need to have these discussions with children now. How else will be ensure that they grow up to be sensitive, understanding and thoughtful human beings.

Story

The Rarest Egg The kingdom of Eidon geared up for Easter. Eggs were decorated and Easter bunnies hopped around with baskets filled with goodies. The king of Eidon sat in his chamber listening to the stories that his favorite storyteller recounted. There were stories about mythical creatures, Gods and goddesses and damsels in distress saved by the knights in their shining armors. As he listened to the story ‘Jack and the beanstalk’ and the hen that laid golden eggs, something struck him. He immediately summoned his councilmen and asked them about the different kinds of eggs they had seen in their life. The councilmen were confused; most of them had seen nothing more than a hen’s egg. One of the councilmen suggested, “Your majesty, why don’t we spread the word about a competition across the land of Eidon, and ask the contestants to bring us the rarest of egg that they have seen. We could offer a huge reward for the person who brings us the rarest egg.” “Wonderful idea,” said the king with a huge smile. By the next day, the word of the competition spread far and wide in the kingdom of Eidon. Messengers made sure that the news reached the nooks and corners of the villages. The hunt for the rarest egg began across the kingdom. After a voracious search for a week, the day of the competition arrived. Contestants from all the corners of the kingdom turned up with different kinds of eggs that nobody had bothered to notice before. There was an egg from an ostrich, and one from a snake. There was a tiny brown egg from a cockroach, and a sugar pill sized white one from a lizard. The king was amazed to see the effort that had gone into searching for the rarest egg. As he passed by the contestants scrutinizing the egg each one had brought, though each egg seemed remarkable to him, he found nothing intriguing about any one of them.As he sauntered past the contestants, he heard one of them whispering to another, “Look at that poor boy, he has brought a normal egg covered with soot.” The listener chuckled, and then replied, “Probably it was an excuse to see the king. That boy didn’t even get time to find a clean egg.” The king approached the little boy who stood there with a glass filled with water and the egg covered with soot in his hand. “What is special about your egg, young man?” asked the king. The boy looked up at him and said, “This egg changes color, your majesty. Now it is black, when it’s in air, but when I drop it into water it changes to silver.” And then he dropped the egg into water as it magically transformed into silver.

12

The contestants were astonished. One of them rushed to the boy, took the egg out of the water and observed it carefully. He then removed a little bit of the soot with his fingers and dropped it back inside. The region where the soot had come off remained white while the rest looked silvery. Before the boy could speak anything, the jealous contestant said to the king, “Your majesty, this young boy is trying to fool you. There is nothing magical about the egg. It is the soot that is magical.” The young boy interrupted, “No, it is the normal soot from the candle flame, give me a candle, I can show you.”The king ordered for a candle as requested. The boy held the egg over the flame and when a layer of suit had deposited over the exposed white area of the shell, he immersed the egg in water. Once again, the whole egg turned into silver. The philosopher was summoned. Soon the wise old man arrived with his long white beard, wearing horn rimmed spectacles. He observed the egg and then said, “This is the common phenomenon of diffraction. It happens because the soot attracts a layer of air around it, and it retains the air even when the egg is in water. The layer of air makes it appear silvery under water.” The kingdom of Eidon had finally found the rarest egg. As the king presented the award to the boy in front of a hall of discontented contestants, he said, “Today I not only found the rarest egg, but also I learnt two things. The first thing, as you all know, is something that none of us knew - an egg covered with soot would look silvery when it’s under water. The second and most important thing is that we always have something extraordinary with us but we go in search of something else instead of finding how special the things that we have can be. To make something special, all we have to do is find something extraordinary about it. And believe me; everything is extraordinary once you start believing that it is. This doesn’t just apply to the egg, but it applies to all other things in life as well. “

Book Review

Book Name: The Ballad Of Songbirds And Snakes. Author: Suzanne Collins Publisher: Scholastic

A prequel to the hunger games. This book will take you to the life of young Coriolanus Snow when he was just 18 years of age and was struggling with his life in Capitol. It's the tenth anniversary of the hunger games and he's all set to mentor one of the tributes. This season's very crucial for the house Snow as it's on the verge of collapsing and winning hunger games will give their house a chance to rebuild it's lost glory. What happens when the odds are not in favour of Coriolanus and who's the tribute he'll be mentoring in the games? I was a little intimidated while picking up this book in the start because I love hunger games and I feared whether this book will be as good as that one or not. But honestly, I loved the book how it started with Snow struggling for some of his vital needs and his personality somehow differentiated from the previous books. When the games commenced it brought back so many memories from the trilogy but in a different manner. There were a lot many technology differences, the way of organising was totally different and a lot many other things were unlikely the same. I always loved the way how Suzanne Collins writes any book, making it all intense and leaving chapters at cliffhanger. I think that's her thing. Coming to the plot line, it was smooth and worked really well for me till the later half of the book. Towards the end it lost a bit of it's rhythm but nevertheless was still gripping. I also liked the characterisation of all the characters including dear ones of Snow, mentors who accompanied him in the games and also a few tributes. I personally loved the ending but felt it a bit rushed. Also, was looking forward to more in story of Snow especially his take on presidency. But not much emphasis was given to that. In the end, I'll be recommending this book to all the hunger games fans for sure and to those who still haven't read the trilogy. What are you waiting for? Pick it up soon. It's amazing.

Story

The Magical Verse It was another normal day in the metropolis that is Mumbai, at least that is what the people of the city felt except a few, and the man out of those few whose life was the most dras cally affected by the anecdotes of that day was Nikhil. Nikhil led a mediocre life, he was raised in an orphanage and did not know anything about his true parents as they had anonymously le him at the orphanage and Nikhil also had no recollec on of them as he was an infant at that me but s ll he had managed to a ain proper educa on and live a subtle life on his own. He was a stand-up comic and was prospering well enough. Nikhil was pu ng his shirt on when his phone rang and it was just as he had an cipated a call from Ajeet. Nikhil picked up the phone and answered, “Don't tell me you are calling me to say that “I hope I had some excuse to avoid seeing your filthy face but haplessly that's not the case, so I had just called you to ask when you will be reaching there.” “I will be there in an hour and not a second more than that, so I suggest that you'd better hurry.” “Why should I hurry? The only time you came earlier than me to some place was when the venue was your own house, so I don't perceive any logical reason to hurry.” “You know what, I have had enough of your taunts, so today, I am going to reach there first and you, my friend, are going to be late.” “Ah! You have said this a trillion times before but no issues, I can afford to watch you come late one more time. Adios.” With that the call disconnected It was Nikhil's best friend Ajeet, he was in town after a couple of months so they both had decided to meet at a park on the outskirts of the town to avoid all the commotion and noise. Nikhil got dressed up and left for the park in his car. He reached the park and was annoyed to see Ajeet already there. Ajeet had a huge mischievous smile on his face which acted as an unnecessary reminder for Nikhil that he was late once again. Ajeet made fun of this fact and kept mocking Nikhil before finally moving on from the topic.

18

Several hours passed by and it was an hour to midnight when Nikhil and Ajeet finally consented to go back home. There was not one soul in the vicinity other than them as the surrounding area was also very sparsely populated. They had just risen to go when they heard some indistinct sounds.“ Where is this sound coming from?” asked Nikhil. “How am I supposed to know that?” “Yeah, fair point.” The sound grew louder and louder and vaguer as every moment passed while Nikhil and Ajeet were still frozen due to terror. Nikhil said in a crumbling tone, “Ajeet, a wise man once said that if something such as this happens then you should run as fast as your legs allow you to.” “God bless that wise man. We have to follow his advice.” “I never agreed more with you” Both of them were just about to make a move when smoke emerged in front of them and engulfed the whole surrounding. Both of them were spooked to another extent, they were hardly able to move and the best that they could do was to close their eyes to protect them from the smoke. Suddenly, they felt the smoke fade away and then they opened their eyes and felt fear stronger than they had ever done. The sight which kindled so massive a fear in their hearts was of five men who had emerged there out of thin air wearing dark black cloaks which ran the length of their body, hoods which covered their faces and carrying something which resembled a wooden stick almost two feet in length with some kind of diamond at one end. Story

Autobiography Of An Umbrella I am a Nike Umbrella. I was made in Moscow, Russia. I was feeling very happy in the factory big air conditioners and clean storerooms. I was with my friends in the storeroom waiting for my other friends to be made. After my other friends were made, we were kept in big cartons and the cartons were kept in different trucks. As I started counting the trucks from the tiny hole in the carton, I counted 20 trucks and 30 cartons were kept in each truck. I was kept in truck no. 5. My 3 best friends Adidas, Puma and Reebok were kept in truck no.10. I was sad but also happy to have at least 1 friend with me. It’s name was Skechers. After a 5 hour journey, all the trucks reached the Airport. All the trucks were driven inside a big cargo plane. The plane was so big that all the 20 trucks fitted insidethe plane. The plane was flying to Bangkok, Thailand. The plane landed in Don Mueang International Airport after a 3 hour journey. The trucks were driven out of the plane and headed Siam Paragon, a mall in Bangkok. After the trucks reached the mall, the cartons were carried out of the trucks and headed to a shop called “The World of Umbrellas”. I heard the manager of the shop saying someone “The shop is only for umbrellas”. I fumed. In the store room of the shop the umbrellas were taken out of the cartons and were displayed in the shop. I was sad that Skechers was displayed on the other side. I was also bored that no one was buying us and after standing for so long my legs started aching. Finally, an 18 year old boy called Sam bought me and my friend Adidas from the shop. We were kept in a plastic packet. He swung the packet so hard that crashing to walls made cracks on our body and we broke. Sam saw the hell and became sad that his new umbrellas were broken but he got a lesson that we must take care of our things as they can get damaged and there will be a wastage of money.
