If you are new to exercise consult your doctor before starting. Get the right gear. If you’re going to be running, invest in a good pair of running shoes. Visit your nearest running shop for advice on the most suitable pair for you. Make sure you wear the right kind of clothing and it’s comfortable. For cycling, a helmet is essential.

Join a local club. Make enquiries to your local running, cycling or swimming clubs and don’t be afraid to join. Most clubs welcome beginners. Always stretch after training. It will keep your muscles flexible and prevent injury as well as reducing muscle soreness. There is lots of advice and information on the internet to help with your training. Check out our new runners’ training zone, for advice on nutrition, planning training routes, distance calculator, online coach and special participant forums. It’s a great way to share your experiences with others with the same goal. Take a look at

Set a realistic training plan... and stick to it! Build your training up gradually. Doing too much too soon will lead to injury. When setting your plan be realistic about when you can train during the week. Getting a friend involved will help you stay motivated and even better if they sign up for the same event, you can fundraise together. If you do train by yourself, make sure someone knows details of your route and the time you expect to return home.

Most of all, enjoy your training and enjoy taking part on the day!

Don’t forget! If you’re doing an event away from home book your accommodation well in advance. There may be thousands of people taking part in the same event and accommodation can be limited. We recommend booking as soon as you receive confirmation of your event registration. For help with accommodation visit the event website or call the nearest tourist office.

Gift Aid it and increase your donation by 28% at no extra cost to you or your sponsor Don’t forget to make sure your sponsors tick the Gift Aid box. For every pound you donate we can claim an extra 28p from the Inland Revenue. For your sponsors to qualify for Gift Aid, what they pay in income tax or capital gains tax must be at least equal to what we will claim on your donation in the tax year. Sponsors must include their full name and HOME address on the sponsor form, not a work, office, school, organisation or ‘care of’ address. Please remember to ensure your sponsors tick the box to allow us to claim. Every year Kidney Research UK loses thousands of pounds of potential income through sponsor forms being completed incorrectly. Please ensure your sponsor form is filled in correctly.

your money

Right now, the lives of over three million people in the UK are threatened by chronic kidney disease. Over 43,000 people are undergoing dialysis or transplant treatment for kidney failure at any one time, with numbers set to double over the next ten years. That is why Kidney Research UK is funding vital research projects. At any one time we have £9 million invested in research, but we are still only able to fund one in five of the applications we receive. By helping scientists to understand more about the condition they will get even closer to finding better prevention, treatment and ultimately a cure.

This year we committed an

of our funds

7,655 people

Of the on the organ transplant waiting list,

7,000 of them need a kidney.

Case Study: Benjamin Caligari

www.kidneyresearchuk.org

Benjamin arrived into the world with the usual happy celebration but at just thirteen days old, he developed septicaemia. Reflux (the most severe grade) was diagnosed when Benjamin was three months old. Scans showed he had hydronephrosis and pyelonephritis in his affected kidney. Reflux occurs when the valve between the bladder and ureter does not close properly on passing urine. The urine flows up into the kidney instead of out of the body. This causes damage, scarring and infection over time. If severe enough, kidney function can be badly impaired. Benjamin was referred to Great Ormond Street Hospital, where he had four operations.

Benjamin’s mother, Kerry said:

It has been a great source of comfort and security knowing where to get information for ourselves and other people. Being involved with Kidney Research UK has helped us to network with other people, find out more about the illness, and empower us to learn more about kidney disease. Benjamin is now growing into a lively, happy, chatty boy. He has medical checks every four to six months and takes long term antibiotics as another urinary tract infection is always possible. Ben’s family have said how hard it has been but the support they have had from Kidney Research UK has made it easier to get through.

All set to take

part?

Here is a checklist to ensure you make the most of the day when taking part in an event. If you’ve got a race number pin it on your race top the night before and don’t forget your timing chip. Check public transport details to and from the event before the day itself, especially if the event finishes at a different place to where it starts. When you book your return journey allow more time than you think you will need. You’ll want time to recover plus you’ll want to share your experience with other participants that have finished. Remember the majority of participants and supporters will be heading back in the same direction, at the same time, so allow plenty of time if you have connecting transport. Encourage your friends and relatives to come along and support you on the day. It’s a great incentive to see a familiar face as you’re taking part! Put your name clearly on your shirt, or if you have a Kidney Research UK running vest, write it in the white box on the front. The crowds will then be able to cheer you on. If you are organising your own event let our events team know and we will send you balloons and flags to help raise its profile. Speak to your hotel about check out times. If they know you are taking part in an event they may extend your check out time so you can have a shower afterwards.
