One such ‘problem’ is the schooling of young children. The levels of anxiety I see in parents regarding how and where their children should begin their next phase of learning is not unlike what my own anxiety was. I thought about what I wanted for my daughter. I hoped she would be happy and would always want to explore and ask questions. That she would be respectful and compassionate. I hoped she would see herself as capable and resourceful and want to try new things without fear of failure. That she would be resilient enough to meet challenges with courage and thoughtfulness. And I hoped that she would always have the strength to follow her own path. I didn’t hope she could count or hope she learned her alphabet at that young age.

Confidence for kids at the beach

Why I chose Montessori for kindy s parents we have a range of information providing us with solutions to problems we never knew existed –until a book, article, expert or friends tells us how urgently we need to act.

n Western Australia, the beach is part of our lifestyle – and Surf lifesaving can provide a foundation to build up your child’s confidence in the water.

I believed if the emotional IQ was established then academic learning naturally followed. I found everything I wanted for my daughter, and more, at Montessori – and was so thankful I wanted to share this with other parents by providing an alternative to the traditional schooling known as kindy. For the adult, the calmness and gentle hum of children going about their day in the Montessori environment with such confidence brings a sense of awe. For the child, they are simply going about their business of growing and learning. With gentle guidance, and a holistic approach, the child is free to develop that academic side because they are interested, rather than coerced. Our Montessori Kindy program provides a specialised curriculum tailored to each individual, enabling social, emotional and academic development to the age of six. To find out more please call 9301 0417 or visit our Facebook page: Joondalup Montessori.

There are three different programs run by Surf Life Saving WA that cater for children aged two to12 years. SurfBabies and SurfKids are fun sixweek programs for children aged two to seven – with the next series starting on Saturday 4 November at eight locations around Perth Metro area. Each program caters to different levels of skills and confidence. Even if your child is an experienced beach-goer, they will benefit from these programs. Megan’s son Oliver wouldn’t touch the water’s edge when he first started – but each week he became more comfortable at the beach. ‘He loved the songs and activities that helped him relax,’ she said. ‘By the end of the six weeks he was not only playing in the shallows but he was so excited to splash around! He can’t wait to go again this Summer.’

for children five to12 years old and is a great way for kids to have fun, make new friends, gain water confidence and join an active, friendly and tight-knit community. Children will also develop the ability to participate in lifesaving beach patrols as well as a wide range of surf. At the completion of the Nipper Education Program, participants are equipped with the skills needed to gain their Surf Rescue Certificate and, one day, become a qualified surf lifesaver. Delivered at local beaches throughout Western Australia by Surf Life Saving Clubs. Nippers programs generally run from October through to March of each year. Enrolments for the new season are closing soon. Michael began photographing the dawn in August 2011 and he has since captured over 2000 Perth sunrises. ‘It’s a routine I’ve come to really enjoy’, Michael said. ‘The early morning soon became my favourite part of the day. And over the years, I’ve become friendly with people who walk past and stop for a chat.’ Michael’s Daily Perth Sunrise Prints have become popular as a unique way to commemorate the birth of a child or a wedding anniversary. ‘Probably because sunrises are symbolic of the dawn of new life or beginning’, he said.

Even on a cool day the temperature in a parked car can be over 30 degrees hotter than outside. In fact, 75% of the total temperature rise can occur within the first five minutes of parking a car. Yoga bears bring Zen to East Vic Park

O

ver the past six months, a crowd of positive and tranquil looking kids have been seen spilling out of the East Victoria Park Family and Community Centre on Saturday mornings. Such, we are told, is the effect of the new kids yoga program Yoga Bears. While the benefits of adult’s yoga are well known, its effects on children are even more profound. ‘Yoga helps children become more aware of their breath, improves their strength, flexibility and posture, while also developing them socially and emotionally in positive ways’, Laura Longworth, owner of Yoga Bears Australia, said. Classes begin with children meeting their peers and sharing something about

themselves. Then, Laura presents the Yoga Bears. Each teddy bear has their own favourite postures and a special sound. Children perform postures and, towards the end of the session, they meditate, rest their eyes and begin chanting. They’re reinforced with positive messages of love, happiness, friendship, imagination – values that are represented by each Teddy Bear. Finally, Namaste. For more information call 0423 306 228 or find Yoga Bears Australia on Facebook and Instagram.

Developing self-regulation skills in toddlers elf-regulation is an umbrella term used to describe a number of complex mental abilities that enable children to control their emotions and behaviour, engage in learning and interact positively with others. Self-regulatory skills start in infancy and become more sophisticated as children get older. Self-regulation is an important skill for success in school, work and life.

S

If you want to help your child manager their emotions and behaviour, just remember the three R’s.

ROLE MODELLING Think of everyday situations that are difficult for your toddler – like losing a toy or failing to open something. These situations are the perfect time to practice selfregulation through role modelling.

RECOGNISING TRIGGERS AND FEELINGS Ask your toddler to label their feelings when they are in one of these difficult situations. Identify what is making them feel that way and how you would deal with the situation positively. For example, if

it’s close to dinnertime, and your child is hungry, you could say, ‘I am starting to get hungry. The food will be ready in 10 seconds. Let’s sit and count till ten while we wait for the food.’

REPEATED PRACTICE Practice makes perfect. Once you have modelled to your child how to deal with difficult situations, the next step is to coach your toddler as often as possible. Help them recognise how they are feeling, why they are feeling that way and help them solve the problem in effective ways. For example, while playing together, you may notice your child is starting to get bored. You could say, ‘I am getting bored of playing with Lego. I want to play with something different. I wonder what I could play with. I could play with blocks or do some colouring. I think I will do some colouring. I better pack away before I start colouring.’ To learn more about supporting the development of self regulation skills, please refer to the workshops listed at dollybhargava.com

Supporting Children through Grief and Loss By Joyce De Haas, Lifeline WA Counsellor

G

rief and loss happens to children just as it happens to adults. From unexpected change like divorce, changing schools and leaving a childhood home, to the death of a pet or loved one – all these events can hurt and cause confusion and shake their sense of security. Children do not have an adult’s level of emotional maturity and are less able to make sense of traumatic losses or calm their own emotions. They need the support. Much as we would like, we cannot take our children’s pain away, however, there are many things that we can do to support children whilst they are grieving. • Comfort, safety and reassurance. Try giving them their favourite toy, teddy bear, blanket or pet. • Soothing sensory stimuli (sounds, smells and touch) can have a calming effect. Being kept warm helps too.

• Familiar activities, routines, movies or songs. Predictability gives children a sense of security. • Plenty of water and healthy food. • Fruit, lollies and icy poles. Glucose levels get low when the brain is processing loss. • Imagination. Invite children to imagine things like rainbows, wishes, magic, balloons, angels, butterflies and stars – whatever resonates with them. This can create a special place where they can process their emotions.

• Physical comfort like cuddling, holding, rocking and massage. This activates the vagus nerve in the body, which re-balances the digestive system, heart rate, breathing and the immune system. Children also need extra rest and sleep when they are distressed.

• An opportunity to help. After a death, try allowing children to participate in the funeral preparations. Maybe they want to create a picture or choose a special photo.

• Honesty (appropriate for their age). Children need some explanation of what’s happening, without too much talking and questioning. Keep it simple, as they may already be overwhelmed.

• Understanding that separation anxiety may return, in the form of bed-wetting, clinginess and getting easily upset.

• Safety to share their feelings and fears, no matter how irrational they may seem to you. Allow all emotions, even if they swing wildly. Children often struggle to communicate directly about heavy, uncomfortable feelings. • Supported parents. It’s important that children do not have to support the adults around them. It’s key that parents find

06 Kids In Perth – The Parents’ Paper, October 2017

their own supports, such as a counsellor. If you are struggling, it is important that there are other safe adults who can step in for the children. Maggie Dent, the parenting guru, talks about family members moving in and bunking down (like sleeping on mattresses in the living room) after a significant death or loss has occurred.

• Sharing positive memories. Have conversations about the place, person or pet that’s been lost.

• Time out. Take some time out just to play and forget about the loss. Just to be a child. Nature can be a good place for this. If you are concerned about your child’s wellbeing, or your own, you can seek counselling. Lifeline WA provides services for families going through separation and bereavement. R

eadiness for school may have far more to do with children’s social development, gross motor skills, play abilities and self-care skills than many parents realise. Skills like turn-taking, assertiveness, attention and concentration are essential for effective learning – and group activity programs are an excellent place to learn these.

Escape from Pompeii: the untold Roman rescue

WA Maritime Museum – Running now until 4 February 2018. 9.30am–5pm In 79 AD Mount Vesuvius erupted, burying the cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum under huge waves of volcanic debris and ash (which ultimately preserved these two maritime cities and the residents who were unable to escape). As many tried to flee, the Roman navy attempted a heroic but ultimately tragic rescue of victims stranded at the foot of the volcano. When excavation began 1700 years later researchers were astounded to find buildings, objects and remains of those who died in one of history’s most famous natural disasters. Reports and rare artefacts have made it possible for us to view this part of ancient history. Don’t miss this opportunity to join us and explore the

When should I start cleaning my child's teeth?

A

As soon as the first tooth appears! Use an age appropriate, fluoridated toothpaste and use only a smear until they are 3 years old and then a pea sized amount thereafter. Always use a soft bristled toothbrush and remember to replace their toothbrush about every 3 months. You will need to help clean their teeth until they are about 8 years old - until then they don't have the dexterity to do it properly by themselves. This includes daily flossing! Start good oral hygiene habits early and your child will reap the benefits.
