Building good men starts at Christ Church Grammar School
Habits to lock away after lockdown By Claire de Franck
B
ars, restaurants, any place that serves wine and food that I have not had to cook, are top of my list of things to do now lockdown is pretty much over in WA, and I will really try not to go in my activewear, oh and perhaps brush my hair. It got me thinking though, what am I not going to go back to? What have I not missed amongst all those good things that I can’t wait to do. Overscheduling: one lesson I have learnt, and a positive, has been to just take my foot off the gas a bit and realise as great as it is to be busy (particularly when you have kids) sometimes it’s okay to not do a lot, sometimes you don’t have to have plans every weekend, it’s okay to wake up and not know what is happening that morning, afternoon or evening (well unless its WFH, sorry boss!). As I read once, sometimes you are too busy writing the history that you don’t stop to read it. Sweating the small stuff: We are all guilty of it, its hard to always put things into perspective when someone hasn’t put their washing in the laundry basket or emptied the dishwasher or..shut the flyscreen door! But this period has taught me to not worry about
things that are really pretty small. Worrying about little things doesn’t make them go away, sometimes it blows them out of proportion, minor setbacks are not going to ruin my day (probably not even that hour to be honest)and the more time you spend on sweating the small stuff, the less you spend on that which really matters.
T
he Christ Church Advantage and your son’s life-long learning journey begins in Christ Church Grammar School’s Early Learning Community (ELC).
Sitting on my sofa so much: Listen its been great, watching Netflix; Zooming; watching the kids watch (and sometimes do) Cosmic Yoga, but when this over I am going to get myself out there more (and not just in the wine and cheese sense!) I have discovered a newfound love of cycling both on my own and as a family, and it will be one of the best memories that I take away from all this, as a way to exercise and recharge. Now thats not to say that I won’t be jumping onto those cushions most nights at the end of a busy day, but it might just be for an hour rather than four! What about you? What will you not go back to? Now is the time to rethink and refocus, enjoy!
With a warm and nurturing educational environment, the ELC caters to the unique educational needs of boys from PreKindergarten to Year 2. Each program is designed to promote a boy’s learning, interactions, sense of agency and wellbeing. Dr Steven Males, Head of the School’s Preparatory School regards intentional learning opportunities and incorporating a play-based approach as important during these early years of development. “At Christ Church, we understand that young boys need to be immersed in handson learning experiences, enabling them to explore, question, collaborate, think critically, problem solve, communicate and discover new knowledge,” says Dr Males. “Research in child development shows that it is an effective way for boys to develop the basic knowledge and skills needed to grow mentally, physically and emotionally.” Other ways in which the School supports the inquisitive learning style of boys
include: • Intentional teaching - a focus on literacy, numeracy and investigation skills • An early years focussed curriculum laying the foundation for boys to make sense of concepts in ways that are meaningful and relevant to them In 2019 the School opened a new Preparatory School, featuring indoor and outdoor spaces designed to positively impact boys’ learning - and teachers who are skilled at igniting a spark of curiosity in each and every boy. Boys in the Early Learning Community enjoy spending time by the banks of the Swan River as a key component of the School’s early childhood programs. The School’s River Precinct situated in Freshwater Bay, Claremont, offers boys safe and convenient access to the river throughout the year. Flexible day options are offered for PreKindergarten and Kindergarten. Visit ccgs.wa.edu.au or contact the School’s Admissions team on 9442 1555 to commence your son’s learning journey at Christ Church.
Not all schools are the same At Christ Church we have developed programs and a style of teaching specifically for boys. We understand what it takes to motivate boys to be happy and engaged learners.

Overuse injuries – Sporting injuries can affect the bone and soft tissue in children, increasing the likelihood of future injuries. Children should avoid over training and limit their participation in numerous sporting activities. If you suspect your child has an overuse injury it is best to seek medical advice.
Playing Injured – Correctly managing current injuries in children participating in sports is essential in reducing the severity of the injury. A recovery period is needed to prevent any further damage, and applying immediate first-aid can reduce the aggravation of the injury and the recovery time needed. Prior to children returning to sport they should be pain-free, able to move the injured area freely and have regained strength.
Hydration – Staying hydrated reduces the risk of dehydration and other heat-related injuries. Younger children are more susceptible to heat stress as they have more

However, studies estimate that approximately one million Australians injure themselves while playing sports each year. Whilst participation in any sport increases the risk of injury, safe practices can reduce the severity of injuries when they do happen. Face your waste: Do you accept the challenge?
I
t is Plastic Free July. That doesn’t mean you have to stop living your life but it is very hard to live in this modern world avoiding plastic. So many items are made from plastic, therefore a lot of what goes into your general waste bin is plastic. It may not weigh a lot or take up a lot of room but in most people’s bins, there is a lot of it there. What Plastic Free July wants you to try is to avoid the use of unnecessary plastic, particularly single-use plastics like packaging, straws, coffee cup lids and bags. These use a lot of resources, energy and effort to produce. Often they are used for a few seconds before being thrown away. Very little of this single-use plastic is recycled. Replace plastic items with ones made from natural materials.
Sunday 9 August | 10.00am to 11.00am REGISTER ONLINE ccgs.eventbrite.com.au
How much single-use plastic do you use? Get a basket and place all your single-use plastic into it, over a week or the month. You will probably see it is a lot more than you thought. Face your waste.

Making use of tech to improve your child’s lifelong learning
T
he way children learn in the classroom today is an opportunity for a blending of tech with traditional teaching methods. By applying features of online learning, students’ progress is easily tracked, feedback can be given instantly and teaching styles can be recorded, analysed and adapted further to suit the way students learn. This approach has been perfected within NumberWorks’nWords centres and principles from this can be applied to children’s daily learning. REAL-TIME ASSESSMENT At NumberWorks’nWords centres, students are assessed to identify the right entry point into the learning program, based on their gaps and strengths. This ensures that they learn at the most effective level in order to establish a strong foundation of understanding, before moving on to the next concept.
REALISTIC GOAL-SETTING Students are given regular opportunities to feel achievement from their effort. The key is to reward persistence rather than getting the correct answer on the first attempt. Being right is not always possible, but what students can develop is their level of grit and determination. These attributes can be applied to challenging situations throughout life and present lasting rewards. PROGRESS THROUGH THE PROGRAM A real sense of self-belief can be gained by students when they look back on how far they have come. Taking time to celebrate progress provides a benchmark for them to measure against, and feel proud of what they have done. Guiding students to achieve their study plan goals, keeps them focused on their journey and not those of others. This avoids restricting their own progress to their age
group or set ability at that time. They should feel that their own ability is limitless. INSTANT FEEDBACK Immediate feedback on work completed is given, with specific hints helping students to master a skill before moving on to the next one. Tutors are then free to address more challenging concepts one-on-one with students where they are not able to move ahead or want to learn and find out more. Not only does this approach promote better understanding of a subject, it also keeps students more motivated and engaged in driving their own learning outcomes.

any parents and children think of numbers when they think about mathematics. Mathematics is about patterns and has a very rich vocabulary attached to it. Children’s literature is a wonderful way to make mathematics ideas relevant and meaningful. There are many benefits to sharing a book with children and using one with a mathematics theme increases the benefits. Learn about displacement in Mr Archimede’s Bath by Pamela Allen or probability in Heads or Tails by Tracey Muir. Reading a book can help reduce maths anxiety, lends itself to problem solving and increases your child’s use of mathematical vocabulary. The wonderful world of literature involving mathematics is not just for younger children. There are many fabulous books for older students and adults such as Woo’s Wonderful

ICA’s much loved Hatched: National Graduate Show, now in its 29th edition, will open on Friday 10 July. Visitors can view the work of 24 recent visual arts graduates from across every State and Territory, getting an instant snapshot of the nation’s emerging contemporary art trends. An enduring institution and a key event in PICA’s ongoing commitment to supporting the careers of Australia’s most promising emerging artists, Hatched will run until Sunday 18 October. The 14-week exhibition is the longest in the exhibition’s history. For the eleventh consecutive year, the Schenberg Art Fellowship, now worth $50,000 and the most generous prize for emerging artists of its kind in Australia, will be awarded to one exceptional artist, this year presented at a
special celebratory event towards the end of the exhibition. We are delighted to be reopening with Hatched, without doubt one of our most popular shows. While COVID has created some additional challenges for us, it has also opened up opportunities for us to be engaging with artists and audiences at a distance through digital platforms,” says PICA Director Amy Barrett-Lennard. “We hope to support more artists through our professional development program and reach more audiences than ever with this year’s Hatched.” In this time of travel and social restrictions, PICA has introduced a range of digital initiatives, including a virtual guided tour of the exhibition and online artistcreated activities. hat animals come out at night? What do they get up to?
Now is the time to stop wondering and go along to Peel Zoo, the boutique zoo set on the banks of the Murray River, as they launch their nocturnal tours. Starting in July, Ranger Red and his friends at the zoo, are offering families the chance to see the zoo come to life at night, and meet all those animals that tend to stay out of sight during the day. Visitors will have the chance to see possums, gliders and quolls including Sally Brushtail Possum but also enjoy a barbecue afterwards in the beautiful surroundings.
Choose from 500+ trusted and verified local babysitters that have been tried, tested and reviewed by families in your community. Kin Sitters offers three different service levels so you can choose a babysitter to suit your needs. All our carers have a Working with Children (WWC) Check. Gold and silver level carers have a verified first aid qualification so parents can have peace of mind that their child is in the best hands.

As an expat family living here in Perth, this was the problem Eve and Nick had, and their answer was to set-up Kin Sitters in 2017.
You can view testimonials and ratings before you book, and get to know your baby sitter by watching their introductory video.

et’s be honest watching kids on FaceTime is painful! My eldest has decided that its best used for a giant staring competition, in which nobody says a word, whilst my youngest, competes with friends in an epic toy off (who knew there was so much Lego in the world). Even I find it a bit awkward sometimes and I am used to it, so what can we expect from little ones who may have used it only a few times with mum and dad. How can we help them get more out of it and enjoy connecting with their friends? Here are some ideas: It doesn’t just have to be a conversation; they can do an activity together. This is best done if using a tablet, as they can stand it up. It could be time to burn that pine!
B
urn season is the perfect time to take action on your own property to stop the spread of European house borer
(EHB).
the most important thing is to do it safely. Your first step is to check your local government website for their specific firerelated regulations, guidelines and permit requirements (different local governments may vary slightly). If unsure, ring your local government to talk to a Fire Officer for advice. In some situations Volunteer Fire Officers in your area can manage the burn on your behalf for a negotiated fee or donation. You may also need to arrange a tree lopping contractor for safe felling of standing dead pine trees. As well as meeting local government requirements, it is a good idea to register your proposed ‘hazard reduction burn’ with the Department of Fire and Emergency Services prior to lighting (on 9395 9209) in case a helpful member of the public sees smoke and thinks it’s a bush fire.
EHB is a pest of seasoned (dry) pinewood which has been established in some areas of Perth since 2004. It is most often found outside in dead pine trees, dead parts of living pine trees, and in pine logs and debris. It is occasionally found in pine furniture and at worst has the potential to infest and damage untreated pine timbers inside your home. The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) is working with the community to stop the spread of this serious pest.
If you suspect your dead pinewood is
The simplest way to make sure EHB is not attracted to your property is to destroy any unwanted/dead pine wood which could host EHB. To break down pine material sufficiently to be unable to host the pest, you need to either chip it to a volume smaller than 100cm3 or fully burn the wood to the ground. As many of us don’t have easy access to a chipper, a winter bonfire could be an appealing option. Note that EHB have been known to survive in a charred stump, so you must burn all pine wood remnants completely to make sure it is EHB-proof.
infested with EHB, please make a report using the MyPestGuideTM Reporter app, or contact DPIRD’s Pest and Disease Information Service on 9368 3080 or padis@dpird.wa.gov.au
While the cooler weather is a great opportunity to make your house and property as unattractive to EHB as possible,

ith school holidays underway, am sure many of us are tearing out our hair, frantically googling things to do and just generally hoping that school might start soon – but have no fear we are here to help with our handy guide (it’s not a survival guide because trust us you will have fun)! • Have a plan and get everyone involved! Cut out our handy school holiday planner and pop it up on the fridge. Get the kids to think about what they would like to do and when, and balance it with free activities such as parks, a family cycle or trip to the library, with some paid for fun.
later sweat it out, in effect disinfecting ourselves from within. Salt will help combat allergies and clean the respiratory system of anything you might have breathed in, as well as removing build up from previous illnesses and other issues. For example, small particles in your lungs will be surrounded by salt which will draw moisture to them and help them become softer and larger so they can be coughed up more easily. Enjoying a great night sleep can also be a benefit of Salt Therapy as it reduces inflammation inside our airways making it easier to breathe. This has a calming effect due to more oxygen entering the bloodstream. Whilst we encourage everyone to focus on personal hygiene, washing hands frequently, covering your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing, we encourage you to
try Salt Therapy and see just how quickly it can help you breathe, feel, live and sleep better than ever before. Stay healthy and visit the team at The Salt Room soon. www.thesaltroomperth.com.aum
Some days could be inside play, like baking and pizza-making, and other days could be spent outside with obstacle courses, backyard camping and nature walks. • Don’t forget quiet time – sometimes the holidays can just feel like go, go, go which can tire everyone out, so make some downtime space in your planner. Cosmic Kids Yoga is great for winding down tired kids, reading and board games are also wonderful family activities for happy memories. • Don’t overschedule – holidays are a time to step away from homework, routine and extracurricular activities, so have days of cuddles, watching movies in pjs and just relaxing (perfect for kids and mums and dads!) • Have fun! Too often we feel that as parents, we need to fill the time with ‘stuff to do,’ but much of the time kids just want to hang out with their family, spend time enjoying things together, reconnecting and strengthening bonds.
• Set screen time limits – sometimes it’s all too easy to give the kids their I-pad or watch TV for hours on end, but by now we know that this is not great, so make sure that they are getting a good balance between play, quiet time and screen time over the holidays. Don’t forget to mention us when you are out and about, or building a fort at home #kidsinperth. We would love to see what you get up to – happy holidays from us all!

Scrap the plastic this July and start making a difference
T
here is so much plastic found in everyday life that it really is easy to start making the switch to go plastic free, at least in some small way, and no better time to start than Plastic Free July! Small steps can really make a big difference, so take the plastic free challenge this July, it really could be the start of something great. Here are some simple ideas from Mindarie Regional Council to get started:
OUT AND ABOUT • Take a reusable water bottle filled with water when going out – saves money and the planet and reduces the urge to buy a sugary fizzy drink. Lots of family friendly places have water refill stations.
• So much single-use plastic is in packaging. If you can avoid packaging, buying fresh produce or purchases items second-hand, you will cut your plastic use dramatically. • ‘Don’t forget your bags mum and dad’. Single use plastic bags are still an issue with them just being made thicker. These bags are so accessible so keep a supply of reusable bags in the car, your bag and on top of the shopping list to remind you to take one. • Try taking a reusable coffee cup again ask them to tip it into your cup that you are holding. Often it is a convenience thing for staff not a hygiene issue
• Reusable plates, cups and cutlery rather than disposable plastic plates. Even paper plates are a better option. • Plastic gift cards are effectively single use. Use an online gift card option and store on your smart phone. • Look for clothing made of natural fibres. So many of today’s clothes are made of plastics, artificial fibres. • Want to save money? buy in bulk – stay away from individual portion crisps and snacks – buy in a large packet and dish out into smaller reusable containers. But remember you will only save money if you use all of the contents. • Opt for small loose fruit as a snack such as an apple or banana – perfectly packaged by nature.
• Try to find the same or similar food product in a glass jar option. • Beware of products labelled as biodegradable. These are often sold as environmentally friendly products but these are often just made of plastics that breakdown relatively quickly…breakdown into smaller bits of plastic that often you can’t see, micro plastics, plastics that remain in the environment.
• Older kids can have the same thing with containers as they carry their bags with them
4
• To cut out wipes. Have a small toilet bag with damp cotton rags or washers to take in car for longer or potentially messy trips (where kids eat).
Choose to refuse plastic cutlery
• Try using produce bags and keep in bag or pocket with elastic band for easy finding. If you forget them at least use the paper mushroom bags for loose produce. These can also be reused. • Have a large reusable cup with to carry so any leftovers you may have after a meal out. • If looking for reusable containers try to search out op shops or Buy Nothing Facebook sites first and not buy new. • Some plastics you can’t avoid, so many things are either wholly or partially made
second hand sources. Often plants a seed for people to visit op shops for a different reason other than it’s cheaper. • Having a party? Stay away from single-use plastic and think about borrowing or hiring plates, bowls and cutlery or get creative
FOR PARENTS • For primary school kids source a lunchbox with separate compartments to put in loose unwrapped food that won’t spill
• Try having ice cream in a keep cup – keep cups never get soggy and collapse – bring a spoon too – much stronger than disposable ones. • Buy loose fruit and vegetables, not ones pre-packaged on plastic trays wrapped in clear plastic film.
of plastic. Look after items so they don’t break and have long lives rather than breaking and being disposed of early.
• For smaller children that need baby mushed food. Keep some of family meal separate and blitz it and put in ice cube trays and freeze. Rather than cooking separate meals. Or store in reusable food pouches. • Use your local ‘buy nothing group’ for clothes, toys, bikes – when you get things second hand you don’t get all the single use packaging that comes with new items.
7
Re-use glass jars for cupboard storage
and serve food in edible containers such as ice cream cones. • Toy Libraries are a great option for keeping kids busy – change the toys often and save room on storage. They can also be great for at home birthday parties with lots of good ideas. • Give an ‘experience’ like a trip to the zoo, cinema ticket, take kids on an adventure treasure hunt in the local park for a present, as often somewhere in presents there will be plastic to throw away.
• Re-usable nappies – save money and the environment - there are loads of free talks around Perth on how to get started and support groups on FB. • Replace balloons at birthday parties with reusable bunting. • If someone has a birthday during July, think of giving ‘reusable options’ from
