What the kids say,

What the parents say,

“The best thing about Summer school was that the teachers always make the class fun in the best way possible, and that all the kids were nice. The best thing was everything! Being part of a team, meeting new people and getting great direction.”

“The experience really motivated my daughter and she loved the experience and wants more participation with WAPPA. We as parents could see how enthusiastic your course made our daughter and she can’t wait for more!”

New research on language development

R

esearch conducted at Telethon Speech & Hearing has provided preliminary evidence supporting the positive impact of data-based feedback to help improve verbal interactions between parents and children who are deaf or hard of hearing. Led by Telethon Speech & Hearing’s researcher Dr Yuriko Kishida, the study found the use of a data-visualisation based feedback model, together with existing listening and spoken language therapy helped increase conversational turns between parents and their children in the program. Parents and their children with permanent hearing loss, aged 15 to 39 months participated in this study for 8 to 17 weeks as they attended weekly therapy sessions at Telethon Speech & Hearing. During this time, therapists, working together with Dr Kishida, provided systematic graphical feedback to parents. Parents and therapists used feedback data for individualised goal planning, to help facilitate children’s language use. Following the feedback sessions, conversational turns between parents and children increased overall outside of formal listening and language therapy time. International researchers have found that the number of conversational turns that young children have with adults can

predict later language development and later IQ, and correlate with brain activity and brain structure. (1, 2) The research, published in the International Journal of Disability, Development and Education, now provides emerging evidence that databased feedback can further improve caregivers’ skills to promote their interactions with their children in a listening and spoken language program. The feedback model used also has the potential to assist practitioners’ databased practice, which is advantageous for children who are deaf hard of hearing.

This play centre in Balcatta offers a scaled down version of the real world from grocery shopping to construction and visiting the vet to putting the BBQ on, inspiring children to learn through role-play.

a maximum of 25 children allowed at each 90 minute play session (due to Covid) it meant that we were able to get the most out of the play stalls. The detail in each is incredible, with window boxes you can water in the house to little shopping trollies, baskets and grocery items in the supermarket and cake stands, table numbers and menus in the coffee shop.

We set off very excited about the fun we were going to have and it certainly did not disappoint!

At the end of our play we left very tired but happy and I think with a budding construction worker in tow.

Top water safety skills for kids

W

ith the weather getting warmer, thoughts turn to going swimming, but leading safety advocate Laurie Lawrence from Kids Alive, is urging parents to make sure their children have the necessary water safety skills ready for Summer. Learning to swim is one of the major steps in drowning prevention and there are five skills that every child needs to learn to make them more capable and safer in the water. Along with these, supervision should remain the number one priority.

1. Turning to the ledge This involves teaching the child to always seek the edge in the pool, so that if they happened to fall in their first reaction will be to turn around and seek out the edge of the pool. This is a building block activity where children learn to turn to a parent first, turn to a ledge, turn to a deck level pool, and finally turn to a high wall.

2. Monkey Monkey Children learn to grip the side of the pool and move around a pool by holding onto the edge and shifting their body sideways along it. This action allows children to move around the side of the pool and exit the water at steps or ladders. Babies and toddlers will be able to perform this skill before they have the physical skills to climb out at a high wall.

3. Climbing out of the pool If a child falls in, the first instinct needs to be to get out but this takes strength and coordination, which is learnt by teaching them how to use their body to climb out of the pool. Some good keywords to teach children are ‘elbow, elbow, tummy, knee, knee’.

kidsinperth.com.au <<<

4. Back floating From a front position in the water, children learn to roll over onto their back to clear their airways and ensure they are facing the right way to get air. Back floating should be encouraged but never forced. Slowly build this skill to teach children to relax and lay their head on the parent’s shoulder. Gradually extend this skill by gently supporting the child under the shoulders. Shallow water is also great for teaching timid beginners to back float.

5. Taking a breath This skill shows a child how to be comfortable in the water and rise to the surface of the water, to take a breath and keep swimming towards the edge of the pool. When children learn to swim and breathe, often they will bob on the spot in a vertical position. Concentrate on building strong propulsive skills like kicking and paddling to help move them back into the horizontal swimming position. Together these strategies learnt at swimming lessons, will build confidence in a child in the water, and if they do find themselves in trouble they are less likely to panic.

younger readers category (7-12 years) . The backdrop to the book is the real story of Skylab, the first space station operated by the US which in 1979 started rapidly descending from orbit. Using that the book explores the themes of family, grief, loss and ultimately the human heart. Twelve year old Frankie the main character was a great draw for my own daughter.

For my youngest we read We’re Stuck!, written and illustrated by Sue de Gennaro, a wonderfully colourful and bright book for ages 3+ which looks at the sense of belonging, connection and friendship. The characters were distinct in their clothing and appearance which was a great talking point for us as we read and it really made us look at them and think about who they were and what they did.

We’re Stuck! RRP $24.99 and Catch a Falling Star RRP $17.99 are both available from Booktopia.com.au

In a traditional Celtic story, a man named Jack tricked the Devil, so after Jack died the Devil made him roam the night with only a burning coal to light his way. Jack put the piece of coal in a carved-out turnip, and became known as Jack of the Lantern. Now we use pumpkins! Dressing up in costumes was once a way to hide from ghosts. The tradition originated as a way for the Celtic and other European people to hide from the spirits who returned at this time of year. Stronger together this Mental Health Week

Need a trusted babysitter?

By WA Association for Mental Health

For families, Mental Health Week is a great opportunity to reconnect, focus on recovery, and strengthen connections by getting involved in the community. Ask family members what they’re passionate or curious about, and research organisations or activities you can link to, as a family. Attend Mental Health Week events and learn about

mental wellbeing and ways to support it. School communities or Local Government may be hosting an activity you can all participate in. Volunteering as a family at a Mental Health Week event or offering time to a local not-for-profit organisational also allows people to experience the joy of giving back. You can even take the plunge to coordinate your own Mental Health Week event!

Choose from 500+ trusted and verified local babysitters that have been tried, tested and reviewed by families in your community.

This Mental Health Week remember: We’re stronger together. Learn more at mentalhealthweek.org.au

Kin Sitters offers three different service levels so you can choose a babysitter to suit your needs. All our carers have a Working with Children (WWC) Check. Gold and silver level carers have a verified first aid qualification so parents can have peace of mind that their child is in the best hands.

If you or a loved one needs support for your mental health, reach out to Lifeline on 13 11 14.

Happy World Teachers’ Day

You can view testimonials and ratings before you book, and get to know your baby sitter by watching their introductory video.

Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world – Nelson Mandela World Teacher’s Day lands around the world early October, but here in Australia on Friday 30th. The global theme is ‘Teachers: Leading in crisis, reimagining the future’. It’s a day for us all to celebrate the achievements of teachers, especially this year with all the challenges that has presented. So mark it in your diary, get the kids to have a think about what their teacher means to them and lets all use this wonderful opportunity to remember all that education gives to our children, our community and the world.
