Prioritising mental health for new mums and dads

P

regnancy and parenthood is a time of great change, and for some the challenges can be overwhelming. Anxiety and depression affects more than one in seven new mums and up to one in 10 new dads in Australia, with many parents experiencing anxiety and depression at the same time. Some common signs and symptoms include crying for no reason, difficulty with attention and focus, feeling constantly sad or low, losing interest in the normal things that bring joy (such as spending time with friends or your partner), panic attacks, persistent worry (often focussed on the health of the baby), sudden mood swings and withdrawal from friends and family. It is important to recognise these signs and symptoms and, as a general rule, if problems persist for more than two weeks, it’s important to see a health professional. It takes courage and honesty to seek help, and the longer the problems last, the worse things can get.

close friend can be a good start. It’s important to also speak with a health professional, like a Child Health Nurse, counsellor, GP or psychologist. Finding time for self-care is especially important for new mums and dads. Don’t underestimate the significant contribution that diet, exercise and sleep can have on your mental wellbeing. Recovery often involves more than one kind of approach, and research has led to advances in new drug-free treatments for anxiety and depression, such as targeted brain-stimulation and brain-training therapies. The Perth Brain Centre has been helping new mums and dads with anxiety and depression for over 10 years. All treatment programs are personalised using special brain imaging and delivered by a team of experienced, caring and qualified healthcare practitioners. or many of us, separation and financial issues go hand in hand, with the topic of child support being an essential consideration.

F

When I decided to separate, the best advice I received was to contact the Child Support Agency and request an assessment be made. The Department of Human Service’s website (humanservices.gov.au) offers a calculator which provides an estimate of the appropriate amount of child support to be paid in your particular circumstances. Private child support agreements can include provisions about the payment of other expenses over and above basic requirements, including but not limited to school fees and health care.

There are several types of child support agreements: • Limited child support agreement parents agree to the terms without a lawyer. • Binding child support agreement each party obtains independent legal advice. • Court ordered child support - a last resort but may be the best solution

if your former partner has a history of delaying, withholding payments or using money to ‘control’ other aspects of a parenting agreement. Wherever possible, parents are encouraged to reach an agreement about the welfare of their children as prolonged conflict is often detrimental to the relationship between the parents and can negatively impact the children.

Fussy eating in children and the tips to deal with it By Claire de Franck, Editor

W

hat makes a child a fussy eater? There is no simple answer, but it’s something parents should know how to tackle as it is a part of regular childhood development says Dr Jennifer Cohen of UNSW Medicine. Dr Cohen has been working in childhood nutrition for more than 15 years, specialising in paediatric oncology nutrition – children’s diets during cancer treatment. “It’s actually normal for a child to go through a fussy eating stage; up to 50 per cent of kids between one to two years old will be fussy eaters at some stage. We call that behavioural fussy eating and the theory behind why it happens is at that age, their growth has slowed down,” Dr Cohen said. “A child’s body is focusing on more mental development – talking, walking, becoming

physically active. The theory is kids don’t need as much food – they’re not as hungry because they’re not growing as much. “A related theory is that while there’s so much brain development going on, the sensory system almost shuts down and if your brain is occupied with other tasks rather than the senses, food just doesn’t taste as good or is not as enjoyable as it used to be.”

common scenario in fussy eaters is to see things like nutrient deficiencies; for example, iron or zinc deficiencies can be a big problem or, if a child is not eating meat or dairy, they could become deficient in vitamin B12.” Dr Cohen said paediatricians or dieticians usually detected such nutrient deficiencies before they developed into a bigger problem.

Dr Cohen’s tips for dealing with fussy eaters

Health implications of fussy eating Dr Cohen said about 10 per cent of children never grew out of fussy eating and remained picky eaters into adulthood. “It’s an unfortunate number, but fussy eating can persist and it can become a problem if it turns into food aversion and that leads to food phobia. If someone has food phobia they are scared of food and to reverse that is very difficult. Sensory issues are also a challenge to rectify,” she said. “But it’s rare for fussy eating to hinder a child’s growth or develop into a condition as serious as scurvy, for example, which is a disease caused by nutritional deficiency of vitamin C from not eating fruit or vegetables. “Generally, fussy eaters will still consume enough calories – they’re just not getting it from a good variety of food. So, the more

1. Practice the division of responsibility: Your job at mealtimes is to provide the food you want your child to eat and when and where the meal is. It is the child’s job to decide whether they eat or not. 2. Eat together as a family: Study after study shows that when parents eat food in front of their children, their child is more likely to want to eat that food. Eating together as a family is a great way to model good eating habits. 3. Considered not catered meals: Never cook separate meals to cater for your fussy eater and never assume your fussy eater “can just starve” if they refuse food – eating that food might be stressful and they might be physically unable to eat it. So, ensure each meal has some foods they will eat, as well as new foods in order to regularly

expose them to something different. 4. Family-style meals: New foods on a plate in front of a fussy eater can be stressful to them. Instead, place food in the centre of the table and let your child choose. 5. Playing with food: Having your fussy eater take a bite of food is the last step in helping them. Allowing them to play with food lets your fussy eater feel comfortable with new foods and takes the stress away. Dr Cohen said it was important for parents to remember that fussy eating was not something which could be dealt with overnight.

Study shows perils of a late bedtime for kids and parents By Claire de Franck, Editor

M

um please can I stay up a bit longer? Please just a little bit? Ah the bedtime battles we all face! Letting your kids stay up late is often a special treat, something at the weekend or on holiday, but recent research from the University of South Australia has shown that if it becomes a habit it could be damaging their health and wellbeing. Measuring multiple sleep characteristics in Australian children and their parents, the world first study identified four primary sleep profiles – Short sleepers (27 per cent), Late to bed (17 per cent), Long sleepers (24 per cent) and Overall good sleepers (31 per cent). It found that those children regularly going to bed late were in the lowest socioeconomic position and had the least favourable diet and activity behaviours. The study is the first population-derived study to establish links between sleep, sociodemographic characteristics and

lifestyle.

age/puberty, dietary habits and lifestyle.

Lead researcher, UniSA’s Lisa Matricciani says the study provides important understandings for population health and wellbeing.

Matricciani says associations between lower socioeconomic status and the Late to sleep cluster, provides new directions for Australia’s public health messages.

“We all appreciate the importance of a good night’s sleep, but too much or too little, going to bed late or having irregular sleep schedules can be a cause for concern,”

“Understanding the profiles of at-risk groups provide better insights to guide public health dollars,” Matricciani says.

“In this research, we looked at a range of factors that can influence sleep and have identified four sleep clusters that can tell us more about people’s lifestyle and behaviours. “The key finding is that adults and children who regularly go to bed late are more likely to have an unbalanced diet comprising fewer fruits and vegetables and more junk foods, such as chips and sugary drinks. “Additionally, this group is also more likely to be less active, with children engaging in higher amounts of screen-time and far less physical exercise. “Notably, people in the Late to bed cluster also came from the lowest socioeconomic demographic.”

Participants (1043 Australian children aged 11-12 years, and 1337 parents [mean age 43.2 years]) wore wrist-devices for seven days to record sleep duration, timing, quality and day-to-day variability – this went into the study along with information they provided about socio-economic position,

“It’s critical that we ensure that appropriate supports, funds and interventions are directed to Australians most in need.”

BOOK TALK By Claire de Franck - Editor

T

his month we review Being Brave Too, the sequel to Being Brave by Hester Leung and Sema Musson. The novel is aimed at girls in their pre-teen and early-teenage years and shares a story of personal courage, friendship and an adventure to save the wildlife. It focuses on empowering young women to stand-up for themselves and be confident in their own skin with its themes of self-esteem and resilience. The story is told through the eyes of the three girls with emails, letters and journals and shines a light on many of the issues girls within this age group face nowadays. Alongside the books the authors have created The Being Brave Girls Cards with illustrations by award-winning animator Jelena Sinik. These are a tool to aide young girls in overcoming negative self-talk, instilling in them instead hope, bravery and motivation.

Cure Cancer’s The Buddy Box is a fun and interactive gift box filled with items to help put a smile on the face of a child undergoing cancer treatment, produced in consultation with children’s hospitals and cancer treatment centres across Australia. Working with partners including, LEGO, The Happy Snack Company, Annabel Trends, Head & Heart Mindfulness, It’s About Us, Laree Watson Art, Super Max and Bryce and delivery partner TOLL, The Buddy Box takes into consideration young cancer patient’s specific needs during treatment. Children will receive practical items such as water bottles to stay hydrateduring treatment and cosy bed socks for overnight hospital stays, as well as games and toys to help take their minds off gruelling therapy rounds. Cure Cancer CEO Nikki Kinloch said: “We are delighted to introduce the Cure Cancer Buddy Box, providing light relief to children

undergoing cancer treatment all around Australia. We look forward to being able to fund more lifesaving cancer research as a result of these special giftboxes.” Supporters can make a donation via the Cure Cancer website to ‘sponsor’ a box (curecancer.com.au/buddy-box), and the Buddy Box will then be allocated to a young cancer patient currently undergoing treatment. All profits from the Buddy Boxes will be invested back into lifesaving cancer research.
