Kip McGrath Education Centres leaders in learning ip McGrath Education Centres in Perth are leaders in the Australian tuition industry, using state of the art technology to deliver supplementary learning programmes in English and Maths to children from age 4 to Year 10. Some centres also offer specific programmes for Year 11 and 12 WACE level as well as Study Skills. Special programmes run for Kindy and Pre-Primary children, incorporating a unique computer programme to help develop early literacy and numeracy skills.

K

Why are Kip Centres so successful? The Kip McGrath philosophy is: “All children can learn, they only need to be taught well.” Children are first assessed to determine their strengths and weaknesses and then given programmes designed to suit the specific needs of the individual child, whether they be remedial, extension, ESL or preparation for exams. All tutors are qualified and experienced teachers. This is very important as students who are struggling with a concept need professional knowledge on how to break tasks down, where to find the best resource

S

and how to teach a child who may not have grasped it the first time. Parents regularly express amazement at how quickly their children can improve and develop in areas which they previously found difficult. Catering to the particular learning style of the student is very important. Dyslexic children, for example, need to be taught differently to many other children because they are visual learners and require more structure and repetition to develop basic skills. Other children are more auditory, so the approach would be different.

This program uses well researched multisensory and interesting strategies to engage children and help them love learning. Victoria believes that all children can learn and that we need to find the unique learning keys for each child. “This is not a one size fits all program,” she says. “We use many programs and strategies that benefit all children but we need to closely observe and take note of strengths and weaknesses for individual children and make sure their unique learning profiles are catered for.”

With the change to National Curriculum in WA, many students are finding that the expectation is now suddenly much higher and they are struggling to keep up. Centres are seeing many students who have never had issues, suddenly floundering with expectations beyond their current skill.

These are signs that show children may be at risk in their learning. If you see 2 or more, contact ICE today on 9271 4200 to make a booking to ensure your child is helped to reach their educational potential.

Teachers are now recommending Kip McGrath centres to parents as they recognise that students improve their skills rapidly. By Continued page 10

• Not enjoying school and trying to have days off • Struggling to read and difficulty sounding out words • Difficulty learning simple number facts and times tables • Messy handwriting and poor spelling • Difficulty making friends • Inability to concentrate • Anger and frustration often noted • Avoidance of homework and not able to do it without your help. Victoria’s unique, creative programs target the 8 intelligences and increase each one. ICE uses the world acclaimed JOLLY PHONICS and JOLLY GRAMMAR programs with Victoria’s successful HOME (Hands on Maths Education) program to ensure children are taught explicitly while still enjoying the process. Victoria trains teachers around the world to use her methods and offers licensed programs to schools and education centres. Don’t delay! These problems compound and get worse if untreated. The Fitzroy Readers hese seventy stories are themselves an Australian success story. They have been developed at the experimental Fitzroy Community School, founded by Philip and Faye O’Carroll (Philip was a lecturer in Philosophy at the University of WA in the early 70s and was already writing articles on education reform).

T

Every child should see a Paediatric Dentist

Publication of the Fitzroy Readers substantially boosted the return of phonics into Australian schools. They start with A Fat Cat, and work through to stories like The Inconvenient Puncture. By then you can read the newspaper, books like Harry Potter, and what’s more important, your secondary school text books! (Some schools also use them for early secondary catch-up.) Fitzroy Community School came top in Victoria for Year 5 in the 2011 NAPLAN, in spelling, reading, grammar and punctuation. Parents from all over Australia are now buying the Readers.

You can explore the Fitzroy Readers website at www.fitzprog.com.au

Bullies thrive on attacking (physically or emotionally) people that they see as weak. Kids who are bullied often have (generally as a result of the bullying) low confidence levels, inability to concentrate on school work, lack of focus and high stress levels, which make them look even weaker.

Kids in Perth - The Parents’ Paperis a resource guide for parents containing solely advertising features.

Where parties cannot agree on how to parent their children, and the Court is required to make a decision, the Court makes a decision in the best interests of the children. Equally important are the needs to protect your children from harm, and the right of the children to a meaningful relationship with both parents. The Court expects that parents, regardless of their opinion of the other, will promote the relationship between the children and the other parent and recognise that each parent has positive qualities and attributes to contribute to the children’s upbringing.

Why attend a parenting course ometimes when couples separate, they are advised to attend a parenting course; this can be specifically for separated couples or simply for parenting skills and advice. People can sometimes wonder why they are given this advice. One of the reasons is that the family unit has broken down and so each parent needs to be aware of their own individual parenting skills and the possible impact of the separation on the children. The children’s best interests must always be put first. Separated couples should give serious consideration to attending any course that might help the children to adjust and to co-parent. After all, the parents will always be parents of their children and the children ultimately benefit by the parents working together.

Support for women now available

Family oriented martial arts

omen’s Health and Family Services offer a range of therapeutic and support services to women experiencing depression, anxiety, and other ongoing mental health concerns. Staff in the mental health team provide group services, individualised support, and care planning within a recovery based model.

obra Martial Arts & Fitness Centres have been changing lives for 22 years at their positive and up-beat, family oriented centres.

Some of the groups on offer in 2013 are Art Therapy, Depression and Anxiety group (applying cognitive behavioural therapy), and a Recovery Planning Support Group. Funded by the Mental Health Commission of Western Australia, these groups are offered free of charge and include the use of an onsite crèche for women with small children.

The program delivers not only the obvious fitness and self defence benefits, but also teaches wholesome life values and instils confidence, discipline and respect in its students.

C

W

It’s not required to have a referral from a GP to access these services, however it is important that women meet with staff first to assess their individual needs and suitability to programs.

Their Martial Arts Personal Development program was created by Sensei Craig Monie, a former National Champion and international motivational speaker.

For further information please phone Jaime Antonacci or Subhan Dellar on 6330 5400. Visit the WHFS website at www.whfs.org.au Womens Health and Family Services, 227 Newcastle Street, Northbridge WA.

“Improving your child’s skills in just one subject can pay off with unexpected benefits,” says Janice. “A surprising gain in self-confidence is often noticeable.”

Victoria Carlton’s literacy and numeracy programs have helped tens of thousands of children to enjoy learning and improve their standards. She believes learning must be explicit, systematic, enhance creativity and nurture self esteem.

• Specialised 1 on 1 tutoring

nrolments are being taken for Term 2 at the Helen O’Grady Drama Academy classes. Weekly classes are held for 3-5 year olds, (as well as for 5–8 year olds, 9–12 year olds and 13-17 year olds) in many suburbs throughout Perth.

H

Staff at International Centre for Excellence help hundreds of children each year who cannot read fluently, do not know their tables and struggle to write a decent sentence. These children desperately need help. If they don’t receive intensive, specialised learning assistance, self-esteem suffers and standards fall even lower.

• Naplan Preparation

Í

ow do you know whether to intervene in your child’s education? Some signs are obvious: ebbing self-confidence, lack of motivation, boredom. But some problems are disguised by adequate performance.

According to Janice McGuire of NumberWorks’nWords, if you want an objective measure of your child’s capability and progress, an expert assessment will provide the information you need.
