Year 9 students facing new NAPLAN dilemma

ear 9 students facing their NAPLAN testing in May have special reason to want to achieve even better results this year . From 2014, the NAPLAN results can affect students’ graduation from year 12. Achieving a result in English or maths below Band 8 will lead to students having to re-sit testing each year until they achieve the appropriate standard level. The students’ Certificate of Graduation will depend on them reaching the required level, meaning that many students will face the worry of re-testing in Years 10, 11 and 12. Year 10 students who did not reach Band 8 in 20 13 have had to re-sit their year 9 NAPLAN testing already this year. Kip McGrath Centres have been helping students improve their NAPLAN results for many years. NAPLAN testing has become very important to ensure that students are achieving to the expected level according to the National Curriculum. With the recent change to National Curriculum in WA, students of all year levels are finding that the expectation is now much higher and they are struggling to keep up. Centres are seeing many

students who have never had issues, suddenly floundering with expectations beyond their current skill. Kip McGrath Centres in Perth are leaders in the Australian tuition industry, using state of the art technology to deliver supplementary learning programmes in English and Maths to children from age 4 to Year 10. Some centres also offer specific programmes for Year 11 and 12 WACE level, as well as Study Skills. Special programmes run for Kindy and Pre-Primary children, incorporating a unique computer programme to help develop early literacy and numeracy skills. Your local Kip McGrath centre can help your child to improve school results, not just for NAPLAN testing but for ongoing literacy and numeracy development. cademic results do matter and your children know that. Victoria Carlton’s new book: All Kids Are Smart will show you the way to improve learning outcomes for all students.

increase if children are enjoying the learning.

All children want to succeed and all children want to get better each year . Every year the staff at ICE work with hundreds of students who really want to improve their standards and “reach for the stars”.

The curriculum needs to be clear so teachers know exactly what they must teach. Children need to know exactly what they should be doing and then expected to do their best but they must be allowed to learn in many ways.

It’s human nature to get by with the least effort. It is a totally uplifting experience to know you have “thrown your heart over the bar” and truly given your best. Our children need to feel the rush of joy that comes with trying your hardest. Children feel insulted when we accept work and efforts that are not their best. They think you genuinely feel they’re not smart and they stop trying. This means that we need to continuously set the bar a little higher and mak e sure children do their best. Of course we also need to provide a nurturing environment that stimulates and helps children to learn. Children learn best in friendly, encouraging environments that help them feel relax ed and affirmed. Academic results will rise and efforts

Children have many different learning styles and as much as possible we need to cater for all these. This is why a “one size fits all” approach does not work.

When children learn differently and we must teach differently. Teachers at ICE are trained in the Victoria Carlton method to teach the basic literacy and numeracy skills in an effective manner that requires all students to do their best. The ICE teachers know about the 8 intelligences and how to increase overall intelligence. They do not put kids into bo xes and in fact they are ask ed to ignore any labels that have been put on the children so they can discover the real person and their learning needs. Children receive quality tuition with state of the art teaching resources, within a warm,
