Year 9 students facing new NAPLAN dilemma
All Kids Are Smart! By Victoria Carlton, International Centre for Excellence
By Mark Jones (Joondalup) and Julie Courtis (Willetton)
Y
ear 9 students facing their NAPLAN testing in May have special reason to want to achieve even better results this year . From 2014, the NAPLAN results can affect students’ graduation from year 12. Achieving a result in English or maths below Band 8 will lead to students having to re-sit testing each year until they achieve the appropriate standard level. The students’ Certificate of Graduation will depend on them reaching the required level, meaning that many students will face the worry of re-testing in Years 10, 11 and 12. Year 10 students who did not reach Band 8 in 20 13 have had to re-sit their year 9 NAPLAN testing already this year. Kip McGrath Centres have been helping students improve their NAPLAN results for many years. NAPLAN testing has become very important to ensure that students are achieving to the expected level according to the National Curriculum. With the recent change to National Curriculum in WA, students of all year levels are finding that the expectation is now much higher and they are struggling to keep up. Centres are seeing many
students who have never had issues, suddenly floundering with expectations beyond their current skill. Kip McGrath Centres in Perth are leaders in the Australian tuition industry, using state of the art technology to deliver supplementary learning programmes in English and Maths to children from age 4 to Year 10. Some centres also offer specific programmes for Year 11 and 12 WACE level, as well as Study Skills. Special programmes run for Kindy and Pre-Primary children, incorporating a unique computer programme to help develop early literacy and numeracy skills. Your local Kip McGrath centre can help your child to improve school results, not just for NAPLAN testing but for ongoing literacy and numeracy development. Check out your local Kip centre at www.kpimcgrath.com.au or call now to book a free assessment: Balcatta (9240 2335), Gosnells (9490 7822), Ellenbrook (9297 3654), Jandakot (9414 8088), Joondalup (9301 2334), Mundaring (9295 6255), Victoria Park (9472 7480), Willetton (9259 4833).

cademic results do matter and your children know that. Victoria Carlton’s new book: All Kids Are Smart will show you the way to improve learning outcomes for all students.
increase if children are enjoying the learning.
All children want to succeed and all children want to get better each year . Every year the staff at ICE work with hundreds of students who really want to improve their standards and “reach for the stars”.
The curriculum needs to be clear so teachers know exactly what they must teach. Children need to know exactly what they should be doing and then expected to do their best but they must be allowed to learn in many ways.
It’s human nature to get by with the least effort. It is a totally uplifting experience to know you have “thrown your heart over the bar” and truly given your best. Our children need to feel the rush of joy that comes with trying your hardest. Children feel insulted when we accept work and efforts that are not their best. They think you genuinely feel they’re not smart and they stop trying. This means that we need to continuously set the bar a little higher and mak e sure children do their best. Of course we also need to provide a nurturing environment that stimulates and helps children to learn. Children learn best in friendly, encouraging environments that help them feel relax ed and affirmed. Academic results will rise and efforts
Children have many different learning styles and as much as possible we need to cater for all these. This is why a “one size fits all” approach does not work.
When children learn differently and we must teach differently. Teachers at ICE are trained in the Victoria Carlton method to teach the basic literacy and numeracy skills in an effective manner that requires all students to do their best. The ICE teachers know about the 8 intelligences and how to increase overall intelligence. They do not put kids into bo xes and in fact they are ask ed to ignore any labels that have been put on the children so they can discover the real person and their learning needs. Children receive quality tuition with state of the art teaching resources, within a warm,

Not having a Will – where does it leave you?
Professionals Services Page Help for children and teens with self-esteem, resilience, bullying and more
C
lients often ask what will happen to their assets if they die without a will. The answer depends primarily on two things:
B
rave Hearted Kids and Teens are two programs for primary and high school children, who experience a variety of self-esteem issues including shyness, lack of confidence, or bullying, to name a few.
• How their assets are owned, and • Their personal circumstances.
Putting a will in place gives you peace of mind as well as an opportunity to implement tax effective and protective structures for your beneficiaries.
The weekly programs, held in Fremantle, offer participants the opportunity to have a voice in a safe environment. Fun activities and processes encourage kids to overcome personal limitations, discover their hidden qualities and strengths, and experience achievement, which improves their selfesteem.
If you would like to discuss a new will, please contact Summers Legal on 08 9420 8222 or email Karolina@summerslegal.com.au for a complimentary initial consultation.

E
ach year thousands of children suffer from undetected vision problems that can make school and life difficult. The eyechart cannot check how well children coordinate their eyes at close distances required for reading or how well they can adjust focus from near to distance. Remember that 80% of what they learn is processed through their eyes! An eye examination carried out by an Optometrist, covered by Medicare, can check for these problems and more. At Spectrum Family Eyecare they specialise in caring for your child’s vision and can help those with Visual Stress (Dyslexia, MearesIrlen syndrome) using the Cerium Colorimeter. Specifically tinted lenses can help like it did for ‘Megan’ whose mother says “Megan is thrilled with her glasses, now the words aren’t moving.” Some symptoms of vision problems

Buggles provide a high quality early learning environment for babies, toddlers and kindy children that will help them build a strong educational foundation for the future.

When it comes time for your child to start Kindy y, Bugg Buggles’ specialised program for children aged 3 - 5 years incorporates curriculum created by qualified teachers that centre around optimum learning to meet a child’s individual needs.
S
tudy Buddy Tutoring is different form other tuition centres because it only offers 1-on-1 tuition and by design their tutors are young adults rather than qualified teachers. They generally focus solely on Maths for all levels from Kindergarten to Year 12.
Children will learn the social, numeracy and literacy skills that will prepare them not only for pre-school, but will provide the foundations for a brighter future. It’s the little things that are important when you are making choices for your child. At Buggles your first week is free so you can be sure that you’ve made the right choice for you and your family.
The 3 main reasons for these differences: • Students relate better to peers rather teachers. A Study Buddy is more a mentor or friend pushing your child to their potential.
Visit buggles.com.au to find your nearest centre or apply online. Do you have a passion for educating and nurturing young children? If so, and you have a Diploma in Children’s Services (or are working towards one) and a current Working with Children check, visit buggles.com.au to view the positions available within the Buggles team.
• Better mental preparation because a lot of tutoring success comes from creating the right frame of mind. One person motivating another is more effective than one person motivating a classroom.

Australia has undertaken extensive testing of pre-school children in passing over, under or through “safety” fences of varying heights. The average time per test run on a 1.2m fence was just 13 seconds. AquaNet seek not only to prevent one toddler from drowning but all pre-school children, big and small. The AquaNet speaks for itself: No drownings have occurred where it has been installed in South Africa (est. 1972) or Australia (est. 1988). The 100 percent success rate of the safety net gives you a choice, allows you to enjoy your substantial investment in your own home and provides freedom of movement for children in garden and pool areas. Silver tale - the online jewellery business that love built
A
73,000-acre wheat and sheep station in the remote Australian outback is the last place you would expect to find a booming jewellery business. Yet that’s exactly where sisters Lisa O’Keefe and Stacey Clayton are running their award-winning fine jewellery brand Koolaman (named after the station).
and Stacey set about designing unique jewellery to celebrate life’s special moments. The names of loved ones or personal messages are hand-stamped on sterling silver and Australian 9ct gold jewellery . In essence, Lisa and Stacey create bespok e symbols of love. Koolaman’s legion of fans includes Danni Minogue, Lindy Klim, Chris Brown, Masterchef Australia winner Julie Goodwin, Katrina Chambers from The Block and the lovely Johanna Griggs.
