What really makes children happy?
A
sk any parent what they want for their child, and you’ll hear the same answer – to be happy!
But how do you raise happy children? It’s not by protecting them from every negative experience that comes their way or by indulging their every whim. This is a surefire way to raise well-practiced victims – who blame the world for every challenge that comes along – or kids that crumble at the first sign of difficulty. It’s resilience that helps create happy children. Children that have the skills to recover from setbacks – small and big – to keep on going. But how do children learn to be resilient? Resilience Bootcamps 4 Kids is a fun, interactive and practical program that helps children develop these important lifelong skills.

Wellbeing in the early years By Leanda Visagie
Suitable for children in Years 3 to 6 of primary school, Resilience Bootcamps 4 Kids teaches their campers the difference between ‘normal’ and ‘nasty’ play refusals, the difference between teasing and bullying, and how to respond appropriately and assertively.
A
s a parent, the wellbeing and happiness of my child is as important as her development and learning. Positive education goes hand in hand with positive parenting to establish a healthy foundation for lifelong learning and emotional development. Scientific research is proving what we as parents have instinctively known all along – the first few years in a child’s life are crucial. During these first 2000 days, we can help neurological pathways develop through the stimulation of curiosity and
With an emphasis on active methods of learning; role-play, discussion, teamwork and games, children learn in 10 hours what might otherwise take them years. Your child will return to Term 2 of school bursting with resilient confidence and a whole new array of skills. All activities are conducted by experienced teachers, and parents and children will receive written guidebooks on friendships, bullying and teasing that they can use at home.
purposeful play. A safe and supportive environment is paramount to the success of a child’s overall development in their early years. Maragon Early Learning Centres are nurturing and inspiring places where children will flourish and develop. For more information visit maragon.com.au
Parents and carers will also receive a video explaining the program, an e-report on their child’s progress and the opportunity to participate in other programs coming later in 2018. Visit bestprograms4kids.com, call 0410 387 787 or email info@bestprograms4kids.com to begin your child’s journey to resilience.

Batten down the hatches – the pirates are coming!
H
orrible pirates take over the WA Maritime Museum this autumn for an interactive exhibition based on the bestselling Horrible Histories. Take command of a pirate ship, try out different weapons – from cutlasses to cannons – learn your fate on the wheel of misfortune, discover the best loot to steal and splat rats in the quayside tavern. Along the way, you’ll discover why the pirate women were just as wicked as the men and learn to talk the patter of a pirate. Learn about the ships they sailed on, the punishments they suffered and the rules they lived by. Horrible Histories: Pirates is based on the bestselling Horrible Histories series and developed in association with Scholastic UK and the Australian National Maritime Museum. ore and more people around Australia are reporting they are lactose intolerant. For these people, their inability to digest lactose properly causes them to experience a range of uncomfortable digestive issues. According to research, lactose intolerance has risen from 2.8% to 4% of the population between 2011 and 2015 – and these numbers continue to grow. Whilst medical research doesn’t identify one gender or age group as being more susceptible, women aged between 25 and 34 are reported to be the most affected. If you or your child is lactose intolerant, Brownes Dairy now has you covered with their Lactose Free Full Cream and new Lactose Free Hilo milk.

1. Get your child’s attention before speaking. Try tapping their hand, saying their name and getting down to their eye level.

2. Decrease background noise by turning off music or TV. 3. Use visual cues such as gestures, signs, objects and drawings in addition to speech. 4. Check in to make sure they understand what you’re saying.

5. Use everyday routines to help them understand how language relates to the steps in the activity. 6. Talk aloud to yourself about whatever activity you are engaged in whenever your child is around. Keep your sentences short and simple. As you make lunch, say something like, ‘I am making lunch. I need bread. Here's bread.’
7. Expand on their language without correcting what they’ve said. If they says, ‘Car,’ try saying, ‘Yes, that is John’s car.” Or when they say a whole sentence like, ‘John go byebye,’ you might respond, ‘Yes, John is going home.’ 8. Set up situations that give them a reason to communicate. Try giving them only a tiny amount of juice so they have to ask for more or put their favourite toy out of reach so they have to ask for help. 9. Develop your child’s ability to follow instructions. Start with one instruction at a time and slowly give them more. 10. Sing songs with actions regularly. They’re a great way to practice!

Investigate like a mathematician
C
hildren can use the same strategies that mathematicians use to become confident problem solvers. Here are a few steps to get started: • Find an interesting problem. How long is that? How heavy is that? • Break your problem into smaller parts. • Make a list, table, picture or graph. Look for a pattern in the numbers. • Use the maths you know. Count, add, subtract, group, share and sort. Ask for
help if you need it. • Check your work and see how you can improve. Don’t cross out or erase your work. • Make a conclusion and explain your reasons. And remember that mistakes are part of the journey! limbing is a fantastic sport for children’s physical and mental health – and is one of the only forms of exercise that uses every muscle in the body, including the brain.
The Adrenaline Vault youth program offers fun, creative, experiential learning for children 17 years and under. Designed to introduce climbing progressions to young climbers, the program also promotes healthy lifestyles and positive interactions between children.
