Preparing our children for uncertain times
Confident, independent and happy – a rewarding learning experience
By Mark Jones, Kip McGrath Joondalup
T
he world has changed dramatically since we were kids. The top six jobs in the world didn’t exist twelve years ago and many more will disappear with new technology replacing workers. Our children face a future that is full of problems.... or .... opportunities. What can we do to help them prepare to take hold of the opportunities and bypass the problems? Those individuals who are able to learn and adapt to the new ways will be the winners. Good learning skills are what we teach at Kip McGrath. As professional tutors, we go beyond the knowledge and the skills to help our students become better independent learners. At your local Kip McGrath centre, we are doing our best to show children that they don’t need a teacher to help them discover new skills. We encourage them to grapple with problems and to have confidence in themselves – confidence to keep on trying when the going gets hard. This is not easy. Some classroom teachers
work very hard to stifle risk taking and discourage trialling different ways of solving problems. The hardest job we have is to convince their students that it is all right to get a wrong answer; we learn more from grappling with our mistakes than from all the right answers combined. Just think about all the failed experiments that led to new discoveries and new insights into our world. Contact us at Kip McGrath for a free assessment and discuss how we can help your child’s future be one that’s full of opportunities. For further information and to book your free assessment, visit the Kip McGrath websites at www.kipmcgrath.com.au and kiponline.com.au or call your nearest centre: Balcatta (9240 2335), Booragoon (9330 4003), Ellenbrook (9297 3654) , Gosnells (9490 7822), Jandakot (9414 8088), Joondalup (9301 2334), Mundaring (9295 6255), North Perth (9227 1043), Victoria Park (9472 7480), Willetton (9259 4833).

hen it comes to a child’s education, many parents want their children to be confident and independent and to enjoy learning. It’s been one year since Megan enrolled her daughter, Alicia, in the Kumon Free Trial and she says Kumon has achieved all that and more. Now in Year 1, Alicia is already confident with what she is learning at school and is even learning topics ahead of her year level. “After the first day of school, the teacher said to me that Alicia is fantastic at calculating maths,” Megan said. “She’s just like any other child but it just goes to show, when you put in the effort, there are rewards.” Kumon individualises the programme to students of all ages and abilities so Alicia found it easy to get into the routine of daily learning. “Her Kumon free trial experience was great. I wanted her to begin Kumon early and the free trial was the perfect reason to get started. Now she goes to the centre, picks up her booklet and she just does her work happily,” Megan said.
Over time and with the support of her Kumon Instructor, Alicia has grown in confidence and independence. “I don’t even have to help her with her sums now,” Megan said. “She does it herself and if she gets some wrong, I’ll go through it with her and then she will correct her mistakes.” Megan has been particularly impressed at the resilience Alicia has developed as a result of Kumon’s approach. Kumon does not spoon-feed answers to children and challenges them to think for themselves. “The initial reason I enrolled Alicia in Kumon was because I wanted her to learn the discipline and concentration. With Kumon, she’s learning to apply herself and she’s learning that when she make mistakes, she just has to persevere,” she said. The Kumon Free Trial is held from August 17-31 where students can experience four free class sessions in either English or maths. Secure your children’s spot before August 10 by searching online for one of 34 Kumon Centres around Perth or by calling 1800 458 666.

ot everything that can be recycled will be recycled in your yellow top recycling bin.
We have all become great recyclers, priding ourselves on filling our recycling bins every collection day. Unfortunately, some of the items we have so carefully placed in the recycling bin end up in landfill. Items like clothing, toys, furniture, batteries, computers, TVs, tools and other household goods can often be reused or recycled but if placed in the yellow topped recycling bin, they will go to landfill. Recycling facilities that take this material are designed to separate only certain items, like glass jars and bottles, paper and cardboard, aluminium and steel cans and plastic containers. It is also important that these items are placed in the bin loose, not tied up in a plastic bag or squashed up in a box, allowing them to be easily separated and sorted. Children’s toothpaste packaging lacks important safety information
P
arenting is about choices, doing what is best for your child, but with children’s toothpaste, many parents choose an imported product with high fluoride, especially if it’s on special. However, not all toothpastes protect children’s teeth equally. Small amounts of fluoride are safe and highly beneficial but excess fluoride causes problems. Toothpaste packaging lacks fluorosis information and fails to highlight potential complications of high fluoride. For a guide to fluorosis and toothpaste fluoride levels, visit www.dentalcaresystems.com.au New Australian-made children’s toothpastes contain ultra-low / low fluoride to avoid fluorosis. They also contain natural antibacterial xylitol (a ‘magic bullet’ against dental decay). The new formulation is superior to that of
Severe fluorosis in permanent teeth caused by high fluoride toothpaste imported toothpastes. Xylitol removes decaycausing bacteria from dental plaque but if enamel decay starts, the low fluoride repairs the damage before a cavity develops. Remaining dental decay free for a lifetime is now feasible with the New Preventive Dental Care. Email pdcsystems@iinet.net.au

ur children live in a digital world. Items such as smartphones, tablets, laptops and even smart televisions are now everyday household items. Our children are also actively using the Internet on a regular basis. Dr Donell Holloway, from Edith Cowan University, was awarded an Australian Research Council (ARC) Discovery Early Career Researcher Award (DECRA) to explore this subject. Primary school aged children are increasingly engaging in virtual worlds with social network functions, and while these spaces carry opportunities, they also carry risks.

Lessons kids don’t learn in school
E
veryday, parents send kids off to school to prepare them for adult life, but there are some important life lessons that simply can’t be taught in the classroom - like focus and concentration. Although it’s physical and challenging, students learn much more from martial arts than how to throw kicks and punches. When a student is learning a new technique or training for their next belt, there is a level of intensity and focus that can’t be seen elsewhere. When they make a breakthrough and achieve a new goal, the confidence and self-discipline instilled is something that can’t be taught in a classroom. It is a completely different approach to learning. They learn that if they work hard, they can accomplish anything. With enough selfdiscipline and focus, seemingly impossible goals can be conquered with ease.

Going overseas with the kids?

ravelling with the kids, especially overseas, can be a bone of contention between separated parents.
Sometimes a parent plans to take the children on an overseas holiday, say, to Bali, but encounters difficulties in obtaining the other parent’s consent for that travel. Children’s passports can also be a tricky topic to navigate, given they are renewable every five years and both parents usually have to sign the passport application form.

Professional development courses for mums
Fitgenes Clinic, a world-leader in genetic testing and DNA-based programs and interventions, is now offering the AMY 1 gene test. This test puts the science behind the carbohydrate/paleo debate as it shows your genetic capacity to digest and tolerate carbohydrates.
I
t can be daunting knowing how to return to your career after a long absence from the workplace. Mums often struggle with finding the confidence to market themselves to perspective employers to get the job they want.
We have had 95% of patients who took this test come back with a poor ability to digest and tolerate carbohydrates, which can lead to increased food intolerances and sensitivities; gut dysbiosis, weight gain, diabetes, triggering of the immune system and autoimmunity.
Training for Me’s Professional Development Courses offer practical solutions to mothers who are searching for work. They are a great way to gain a foothold in the employment market and build confidence. Unlike TAFE and other training companies, Training for Me’s professional motivation speakers will provide individualised learning opportunities and will address any feelings of helplessness often associated with returning to the workforce. Their courses are also structured with practical workplace placements, so students
often secure a job immediately after completing their studies. For more information about Training For Me or some career advice, please call 6267 9062 or visit www.trainingforme.edu.au
Stop the Guesswork. Make informed decisions about your health. Call (08) 6102 0054 to test your AMY 1 gene. Head to their next seminar on AMY 1 and Gluten and Food Intolerances, Tuesday 25 August at 6.30pm. Bookings essential.

Tuition for Children Training for Teachers
Children with APD have a hard time understanding what people say to them even though they have good hearing, which can lead to frustration and behavioural difficulties, withdrawing and anxiety.
The Tomatis® program helps to retrain the ear-brain-body connections with special equipment and headphones via air and bone conduction. Francoise comes to Perth regularly to assess children and design their home-based programs. www.tomatis.com.au – 1800 677 010.
Don’t let your child suffer the pain and embarrassment of APD unnecessarily, as there is a solution for APD with the Tomatis® Method.
From
Stewart is a young boy who came to Francoise Nicoloff for behaviour and communication difficulties. He had been somewhat aggressive in his communication and displayed some behavioural issues in the form of tantrums and sulkiness. He started the Tomatis® program and within days his behaviour changed at home and at school. Parents and teachers proclaimed that he was a different child.
