Preparing our children for uncertain times
Confident, independent and happy – a rewarding learning experience

he world has changed dramatically since we were kids. The top six jobs in the world didn’t exist twelve years ago and many more will disappear with new technology replacing workers. Our children face a future that is full of problems.... or .... opportunities. What can we do to help them prepare to take hold of the opportunities and bypass the problems? Those individuals who are able to learn and adapt to the new ways will be the winners. Good learning skills are what we teach at Kip McGrath. As professional tutors, we go beyond the knowledge and the skills to help our students become better independent learners. At your local Kip McGrath centre, we are doing our best to show children that they don’t need a teacher to help them discover new skills. We encourage them to grapple with problems and to have confidence in themselves – confidence to keep on trying when the going gets hard. This is not easy. Some classroom teachers
work very hard to stifle risk taking and discourage trialling different ways of solving problems. The hardest job we have is to convince their students that it is all right to get a wrong answer; we learn more from grappling with our mistakes than from all the right answers combined. Just think about all the failed experiments that led to new discoveries and new insights into our world. Contact us at Kip McGrath for a free assessment and discuss how we can help your child’s future be one that’s full of opportunities. hen it comes to a child’s education, many parents want their children to be confident and independent and to enjoy learning. It’s been one year since Megan enrolled her daughter, Alicia, in the Kumon Free Trial and she says Kumon has achieved all that and more. Now in Year 1, Alicia is already confident with what she is learning at school and is even learning topics ahead of her year level. “After the first day of school, the teacher said to me that Alicia is fantastic at calculating maths,” Megan said. “She’s just like any other child but it just goes to show, when you put in the effort, there are rewards.” Kumon individualises the programme to students of all ages and abilities so Alicia found it easy to get into the routine of daily learning. “Her Kumon free trial experience was great. I wanted her to begin Kumon early and the free trial was the perfect reason to get started. Now she goes to the centre, picks up her booklet and she just does her work happily,” Megan said.
Over time and with the support of her Kumon Instructor, Alicia has grown in confidence and independence. “I don’t even have to help her with her sums now,” Megan said. “She does it herself and if she gets some wrong, I’ll go through it with her and then she will correct her mistakes.” Megan has been particularly impressed at the resilience Alicia has developed as a result of Kumon’s approach. Kumon does not spoon-feed answers to children and challenges them to think for themselves. “The initial reason I enrolled Alicia in Kumon was because I wanted her to learn the discipline and concentration. With Kumon, she’s learning to apply herself and she’s learning that when she make mistakes, she just has to persevere,” she said. The Kumon Free Trial is held from August 17-31 where students can experience four free class sessions in either English or maths. Secure your children’s spot before August 10 by searching online for one of 34 Kumon Centres around Perth or by calling 1800 458 666.
