R

eturning for its third year on beautiful Rottnest Island, Carnivale is an Islandwide fiesta jam packed with free entertainment and activities for all to enjoy. On Saturday 29 October, from 10am to 4pm, event zones dotted around the island and some of its spectacular bays will showcase live music, face painters, giant bubble blowing, a WA Birds of Prey display, food theatre and much more. Magical mermaids and devious pirates are in attendance and revellers can join in the Ultimate Treasure Hunt with the Telethon Adventurers or be taken for a ride on the Island’s historic Captain Hussey Train. This year the event is bigger, better and spookier than ever as Carnivale features a special Halloween themed “By Night” component set to transform the Island from a day of family fun into a fine evening of mouth-watering food, dance and entertainment. From 5pm-late, watch as the Island transforms. Put on your spookiest outfit and join them on a Trick or Treat tour , stop in at the Zombie Silent Disco or take part in a Best Dressed Competition. Then you can end the

evening with a relaxing movie under the stars at the outdoor cinema. Various venues throughout the island will also be hosting festivities for patrons to devour delicious culinary creations or dance the night away to Calypso tunes. “Last year Rottnest Island Authority and the island business community were delighted with the response to this fun-spirited Island event,” Rottnest Island Authority’s Chief Executive Officer, Paolo Amaranti, said. “Rottnest Island Carnivale is not to be missed, particularly for those friends and family looking for a great day and night out. Last year ferry tickets sold out very fast. With the long range weather forecast a pleasant 24 degrees, we’re expecting to see a larger contingent of the WA boating community.” Special ferry tickets for Rottnest Island Carnivale 2016 are on sale now. Travel return for just $29 from Fremantle and $39 return from Hillarys. Afternoon and late night ferries available for those wishing to attend the “By Day” or “By Night” entertainment only. uture proofing is the process of giving your child the skills to successfully cope with a future of unknown challenges and opportunities. The future is full of jobs and skills that haven’t even been invented yet. This future will belong to those who can rapidly learn new skills and technologies. Employers are now relying on their staff to keep them up to date, rather than training their staff as in the past. The successful future employee will be the one able to independently learn skills they can bring to their employment, providing them with the edge over other job seek ers. Children learn to be independent learners when they are challenged to try and fail, re-think and try again to finally earn success. Research shows that students gain more when they are encouraged to work with lots of different problems, requiring different knowledge sets and skills. Kip McGrath uses this model of learning as our way to challenge our students’ developing skills and understanding. We aim for your child to be independent of the teacher and to successfully tak e

control of their learning. Developing selfreliance builds the confidence to tak e risks and learn from mistakes - and to take responsibility for their own learning. At every Kip McGrath centre qualified and experienced teachers create learning programs that centre on helping kids become better learners. We match our instruction to both the immediate and longterm needs of each individual child. Now is the time to start your child on the journey to independent learning and selfreliance. Is my child too late for Montessori?

T

he short answer is - no. It’s never too late to consider Montessori for your child, even if you’re already committed to another childcare centre, local public school or private school. If you’re considering the switch, there’s no time like the present. When properly informed about how and why the Montessori Method works, children adapt very well to this style of learning and unique environment. Montessori develops children holistically and sets them towards a path of lifelong learning. Schooling is characterised by mixed-age classrooms, each having a three year to four year age bracket, starting from 3

to 6 years, 6 to 9 years and so on. At every age bracket, specific aspects of child development are reinforced through the curriculum. These range from encouraging children to learn by having understanding concepts rather than memorising, through to, accentuating self-reliance and managing social dynamics, which is helpful, for when they have to either work independently or as part of a group. It’s never too late to start Montessori but always timely for parents to regret finding out! Why not book an appointment today at one of the listed Montessori playgroups, childcare or schools on this page.

O

riginally founded by parents who wished to be part of their children’s education, Kerry Street Community School is a small, independent school where parents are welcome to participate in their child’s learning.

T

elethon Speech and Hearing have recently launched a new program providing early identification of hearing, speech and fine and gross motor developmental delays, which are known to affect educational outcomes.

At Kerry Street, parents are actively involved in all aspects of their child’s school experience. This can be in the form of spontaneous participation or structured contribution of time and expertise.

The new program is called Telethon Speech and Hearing (TSH) Go Bus Plus and it provides an on-doorstep screening service at schools around the Perth Metropolitan area. TSH Go Bus Plus is a fee for service program, with the income used to fund the service further to reach out to disadvantaged children.

With low student-teacher ratios, multi-age classes and a strong commitment to individual, community and environmental wellbeing, Kerry Street students enjoy rich and unique learning opportunities.

Telethon Speech and Hearing is a not for profit children’s charity, registered independent school, and has been providing services for children with hearing and speech

If you are interested in registering the Go Bus Plus service for your school, please contact Telethon Speech and Hearing for further information on 9387 9888.

Teaching the teachers

M

any teachers are under unbelievably high stress loads as they struggle to teach students synthetic phonics and grammar. The simple reason for this is that many teachers were not taught basic phonics and grammar and so need a great deal of support to deliver these essential programs. Others may have been taught the rudiments of phonics or grammar but it was so long ago and they have forgotten.

include exciting and effective training for SYNTHETIC PHONICS, GRAMMAR, READING, WRITING and the STAR Program for those students who are at risk of falling through the “educational cracks”.

Research demonstrates that quality professional development (PD) is of paramount importance for effective schools. Teachers need to access PD that will suit their needs and can be individualised for specific school requirements. Informed and up to date teachers are the crucial link to achieve both effective teaching and high academic outcomes.

During these high-energy and engaging sessions Victoria shares her passion, humour and gives generously from her online resources. The aim is always to help teachers provide the best quality programs for children. The strategies presented are evidence based, engaging and enjoyable with plenty of opportunities for questions and “hands-on” to help teachers full understand.

Victoria Carlton, the Director of International Centre for Excellence, delivers quality Professional Development that ensures teachers get the information and practical strategies they need to address these needs. The workshops that are offered

a consistent approach across all year levels and to ensure their teachers receive the necessary backup to ensure the methods are effectively used in the classroom. These courses can be run at Victoria’s centre in Bayswater or in-school, and the options include whole day, half day, after school or Saturday sessions. Victoria Carlton is committed to quality training that has been trialled with children and will only present strategies that work within a classroom environment. She knows that schools have to cater for many different learning styles and so she provides a real menu of strategies to ensure ALL children learn to their optimum potential. Her mantra is THOU SHALT NOT BORE YOUR AUDIENCE! so she seeks to engage and enthuse. She is always happy to speak to individual teachers, Principals or learning area coordinators to ensure that teachers’ needs and expectations are met and exceeded! Because Victoria works with children of all ages on a daily basis, she is very aware

Piano lessons the key to brain development

W

hether a child plays the piano for a short time or a lifetime, the longterm effects are many.

During one study, Dr. Frances Rauscher (a psychologist at University of Wisconsin) and Gordon Shaw (a physicist at University of California) tested pre-schoolers who received piano instruction. They found that preschoolers who received piano lessons scored 34% higher than their non-musical counterparts in tests measuring spatialtemporal reasoning (the brain function for understanding math, science and engineering). Through playing the piano, children may

be exposed to classical music and develop an appreciation for composers. The skills they learn in piano will also help them easily pick up another musical instrument later. Learning piano is a challenge. However, once a piece is learned and showcased, it boosts self-esteem as much as winning a sports competition. From one of the world’s most exciting choreographers comes a laugh-outloud funny and affectionate tribute and parody of modern art: Cacti. Swedish Alexander Ekman’s witty and energetic piece, performed by the full Company and a string quartet, will take you in with a knowing wink, then surprise you with its bracing physicality. Rafael Bonachela’s world premiere, Lux Tenebris, provides the perfect contrast: light and darkness emerging from a dusky sonic landscape by composer Nick Wales (long-term collaborator of Sarah Blasko).
