January holiday programs: literacy, numeracy and self-esteem boost By Julia Gilmore (M.Ed., B.Ed., Dip.Tch.,TAE) Literacy and Numeracy Specialist
W
ithout academic stimulation, children can regress rapidly over the long summer break. Extra help in the two weeks before Term 1 starts can make a huge difference and boost self-esteem. This applies to students from pre-primary to high school. For many years, students from all over Western Australia, have been attending A1 Learning Academy or have individual home tuition for a range of interesting, entertaining and educational holiday programs including: • Reading, writing, spelling and maths • Self-esteem and confidence boosting study skills • Remediation and extension • Special programs for Dyslexic students • Essay writing and editing: how to master the art of written expression for all ages • Handwriting • Preparation for Scholarship, GATE and NAPLAN testing
Feedback received from parents and students shows just how effective the holiday programs have been: “We were worried about Adam going into high school in Year 7 but he got so much value out of the holiday program and has done really well in Year 7 (Chloe and Damien M. from Edgewater). The Pre Primary and Year 1 students who attended the transition program in 2014 were off to a flying start in Term 1. They had covered reading, writing, spelling, phonics and maths, as well as having a massive boost to their self-esteem. They didn’t want to go home at the end of each session!
Holiday brain drain by Victoria Carlton, International Centre for Excellence
D
id you know your child’s IQ decreases in January? The old adage “use it or lose it” applies to school children over the long January break. More than two weeks away from basic spelling, reading, comprehension, maths and just plain mental stimulation will cause their brains to switch off and valuable learning ground will be lost. The long Christmas holidays are often over six weeks and this presents serious difficulties for all children, particularly those who have struggled during the previous year. Teachers often remark that when children return to school in February, it takes nearly a term to get most children to switch back on to effective learning mode.
The Years 7 to 10 students responded very well to the Study Skills program as it helps them with organisation, essay writing, research skills and many other skills necessary for success in high school. The maths programs show amazing results.
Why not give your child the advantage of revision and preparation for the new academic year? Specially trained educators at the International Centre for Excellence, run academic and creative courses throughout January to help all children be poised for success in the new school year.
For enquiries, bookings, or just a chat, please contact Julia on 0411 420 218. www.a1learningacademy.com.au
They have a special academic boost course that revises the most important maths and language concepts from the

previous year, and then gives sneak previews of the hardest maths and language concepts to come during 2012. Parents can choose from the many dates offered and generally six to eight sessions will make a significant impact on their academic progress. Feedback from teachers and parents has demonstrated the effectiveness of this program and all children would benefit from attendance. Ice also offers writing through art, comprehension through art and EQ4KIDZ (a research based and transformative social and emotional skills course) during the January break. They also have a very enjoyable art course: Aussie Art where children study great Aussie artists and try out their styles. Children entering Grade 1 in 2012 are offered the Transition to Grade 1 course to help them begin reading, writing and improve phonics understanding. This course has had outstanding and long-lasting effects on academic learning. High school children are catered for... Continued page 09

his is not just another chat app. KodaChat is specifically designed to involve parents in their child’s journey into the world of social media. KodaChat began because of a clear and present problem. Kids want to engage technology to communicate with their friends, however parents are reluctant due to the lack of safe alternatives.
Hearing is vital for developing age appropriate speech, language, and listening skills. Hearing testing available on appointment
Many chat apps are not developed with kids in mind or do not restrict who can communicate with them. KodaChat creates a safe, supervised and social community. Parents can now decide who can connect and chat with their children, choose to approve the images and links sent in messages, schedule appropriate times of use, and know that appropriate language is being used. It’s the safer alternative.

Legislative changes bring over 47,000 people into workforce
T
he Federal Government’s national budget is encouraging more diversity, flexibility and participation in the Australian jobs market. This is good news for early childhood educators and Early Learning Centres. Female workforce participation has grown steadily in Australia in recent decades, yet mothers of children under 15 years are still under-represented by national and Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) standards, in comparison to fathers and women without children. Recent public debate suggests this problem has numerous contributing factors, many of which lie within the remit of the Federal Government’s Childcare and Early Childhood Learning system. Following a recent inquiry conducted by The Productivity Commission, the main focus
cultivating every aspiring dancer
point should be on providing a better funded, flexible, affordable and accessible Childcare and Early Learning system.

Summer is here, are your kids pool-safe?
T
here are many reasons for having a safety net, most importantly because it has a 100 percent safety record since its inception in 1974 (no drownings). The pool safety net is a barrier between the child and the water – drownings happen at the water’s edge, not the fence line. The pool safety net is designed as a deterrent for children; it’s not a trampoline or something to play on, as the 100mm squares are bigger than preschoolers’ feet but smaller than their heads. Children won’t intentionally go onto the net because their feet will go through (but their heads won’t). They stay well away from the net because it isn’t fun.
Peace of mind is another good reason to get a swimming pool safety net. The net is a great kiddie catcher – if they fall onto it, it catches them and they clamber off safely. For more information call Rodger on 9335 6986, all hours, or visit www.poolcoversonline.com.au

R
esearch shows that working memory is one of the best predictors of academic success.
Working memory is essential for learning and supports many of the activities that children routinely engage in at school, including controlling attention, remembering instructions, organising information, resisting distractions and complex thinking.
You can agree to supervised contact or you can ask the Family Court to make orders requiring it. For more information on this or any family law matters please contact Kott Gunning partner Loretta Carè on (08) 9321 3755.

Poor working memory and failure at these activities can be the cause of a significant impairment for students. Studies consistently show that problems with attention and learning are often caused by poor working memory.
P

This holds true of students with attention deficit disorders, dyslexia, processing disorders and learning difficulties.
The first site in Australia to install VolparaDensity software, the specialist team from Women’s & Breast Imaging believe it crucial to have the best possible technology and resources available to detect breast cancer early, especially for women with dense breasts.
Word For Word Education Services is a specialised private practice that provides a range of services for students with learning and attention difficulties. We use successful strategies and programs to effectively help students improve working memory and literacy learning.
Studies report that women with dense breasts have a five to six times greater risk of breast cancer compared to women with very low density. Density in breasts also decreases the sensitivity of the mammogram and can impact early detection.

What is SEMAS and how does it work?
S
EMAS is a program designed to develop the right side of the brain using the abacus as a tool. Something so unique, it will change the way you and your children feel about Maths. Their aim is to accomplish whole brain development; it’s much more than a mathematics course. The SEMAS classroom includes learners as young as three years old. SEMAS develops fast mental calculations and also improves creativity, memorisation and intuitive thinking. SEMAS students are able to draw upon the right-brain, which increases speed and accuracy. To do this, students learn how to visualise the abacus in their memory, which is why calculations are able to be made more quickly.

skills by preparing a child mentally and physically before a specific life skill is presented to the child.
Classes start 2nd February 2015
For example, the physical and sensorial activities, which may include woodwork, clay work and tracing, culminate in preparing children for the rigours of writing. Individualised lessons and indirect preparation means that the children are not frustrated and are willing to learn.
Self-development exists in children from birth. In their first three years they learn to move, speak and care for themselves without total adult dependence. It is easy to think of toddlers as an extension of infancy, but Montessori views them as intelligent individuals with absorbent minds yet still limited by a body not yet fully formed. A toddler has self-developed to this point through an innate motivation, while their minds are also forming a perception of the world.

Supported by the Department of Health, the summer component of Kidsafe WA’s Seasonal Safety Campaign focuses on Holiday Safety. Help safety shine through this summer, without spoiling your summer fun. Follow these tips for travel, toy, water and celebration safety: • Follow the age recommendations when buying toys
• If you have to leave the car, even to run a quick errand, take your kids with you • Always supervise children around water
• Ensure sure your child is appropriately restrained for their age and size when travelling in the car
• Don’t neglect the supervision of children during family gatherings and holiday parties
• Create safe play areas away from moving vehicles
