Huge holiday learning menu at ICE
E
Hit the ground running when school starts
ducators at ICE are offering a huge learning menu in January to stimulate your child’s mind and have them primed for success in Term 1, 2016.
The 7 Habits of Successful Children course is perfect for those children who have completed EQ4KIDZ and want to move to a more positive, healthy and successful pathway.
The Going for Gold Academic Boost course for maths and literacy will raise academic standards and help children prepare for a successful school year. All children are individually assessed and placed in appropriate learning programs.
Art from the Heart is a new art course that utilises a balanced art approach. Students learn techniques and study famous artists while expressing their creativity through a huge range of art techniques.
The Creative Writing Program is built around sensory experiences and visualisations to stimulate the imagination. It will get even the most reluctant writers loving this area. Children will write their own books and produce a magazine of their work. The Young Scientists Program is full of experiments and learning about the natural world and will whet your child’s appetite for learning and increase their enthusiasm and knowledge in this important area. EQ4KIDZ is a fully researched emotional intelligence course and is designed to help children feel more positive and motivated and to raise their self-esteem and resilience. The program leads to an “I can!” attitude and translates into higher academic success.
PRICELESS
Transition to Formal Learning is an enormously successful course that helps children make the transition from K to PP or PP to Grade 1. This course is transformative and gets children reading, writing and doing basic maths in no time! The full range of Victoria Carlton’s pre-school programs are also available (2 -5 years) and all use Victoria Carlton’s unique learning programs with the Jolly Phonics approach. Victoria Carlton and educators from ICE wish all readers a wonderful Christmas season and look forward to helping students and families in 2016! To view the full menu of activities, visit www.ice-au.com, call 92714200 or email iceinfo@iinet.net.au

ithout academic stimulation, children can regress rapidly over the long summer break. Extra help in the two weeks before term one starts makes a huge difference and boosts selfesteem. For many years, students from all over Western Australia, have been attending A1 Learning Academy or have individual home tuition for a range of interesting, entertaining and educational holiday programs including: • Reading, writing, spelling and maths • Self-esteem and confidence boosting • Study skills • Remediation and extension • Essay writing and editing • Handwriting and presentation • Preparation for Scholarship, GATE, NAPLAN and OLNA testing Feedback received from parents and students shows just how effective the holiday programs have been. “We were worried about Adam going into high school
in Year 7 but he got so much value out of the holiday program and has done really well in Year 7.” Chloe and Damien The Pre Primary and Year 1 students who attended the transition program in 2015 were off to a flying start in T erm 1. They covered reading, writing, spelling, phonics and maths and massively boosted their self-esteem. They didn’t want to go home at the end of each session! The Years 7 to 10 students responded very well to the Study Skills program, which helps with organisation, essay writing, research skills and many other skills necessary for success in high school. The maths program gives them tremendous insight into difficult concepts, such as algebra. Comprehensive academic assessments, reports and term programs are also available. All programs are based on the current Australian Curriculum requirements. Contact Julia on 0411 420 218 for more information or visit www.a1learningacademy.com.au

very year the Resource Recovery Facility in Neerabup processes over 100,000 tonnes of general household waste. They remove the organic part (food scraps, lawn clippings, garden pruning’s, paper etc.) from the other waste and turn it into a composted soil conditioner. Unfortunately, glass deposited into the green-top bins can’t be used to make compost. It not only needs to be taken out and sent to landfill, but some of the glass still remains at the end of the process and contaminates the compost, limiting its use. This glass could more beneficially be utilised if residents placed it in the yellow-top recycling bin. To reduce this glass contamination and to

artial arts training is highly beneficial to children, especially in building self-esteem. Children feel good about themselves, think positively, act positively and perform positively. They have a “yes, I can” attitude. Unfortunately, too many children worry about failure. They doubt their ability, underestimate their strengths and become overcritical of themselves. They don’t believe they can achieve. adult. The guidance and encouragement provided by professional trainers and parents is an important catalyst on the path of personal development.
Quite often our language determines our outlook and our actions. We encourage our students to replace the phrase “no, I Can’t” with “this is a challenge” or “I would like to improve.”

My career and studies started in 2012 with an ACBT diploma. It’s a great place to learn with amazing instructors offering practical, real world information and techniques. During my course, I worked at Perth’s Evoque Lash Spa providing high-end treatments. The skills learned at ACBT definitely helped when using highlyspecialised salon machines. challenged by the moral dilemma of stealing something because it makes you “feel good”. It will inspire conversations long after you leave the theatre. Christmas gift certificates are now available. To book, please visit www.sppt.asn.au or telephone 9335 5044.

Dracula’s rigid monster-only hotel policy has finally relaxed, opening up its doors to human guests. But behind closed coffins, Drac is worried that his adorable halfhuman, half-vampire grandson, Dennis, isn’t showing signs of being a vampire. So while Mavis is busy visiting her human in-laws with Johnny (and in for a major cultural shock of her own) “Vampa” Drac enlists his friends Frank, Murray, Wayne and Griffin to put Dennis through a monster-in-training boot camp. Little do they know that Drac’s grumpy and very old, old, old school dad

T
here is growing evidence by researchers that delaying kindergarten by a year results in significant mental health benefits. More mothers have the need to go to work and sending children to daycare and kindergarten at an early age has become inevitable. Crescenteec, or “Selvi’s place” as most children call it, is a friendly, home environment where children feel at ease in small-sized groups. Programs are designed to suit every child and their individual needs; gifted children, children with learning disabilities, those lacking confidence or those with behavioral issues and separation anxiety. Cresenteec are inspired by the Montessori philosophy and the Reggio Emilia approach.
Emotional Intelligence is also a main focus. Children as young as 18 months old can start off by doing parent group sessions and can do other programs without their parents when they are ready. Call Selvi at 0423 820 777, email crescenteecinfo@gmail.com or visit www.crescenteec.com.au

How does ballet help with school performance?
P
arents who send their children to The Conservatoire for ballet lessons are surprised at the improvement in their child’s school performance and grades. “Ballet uses both the left and right sides of the brain as well as touching on every subject learnt at school,” says Ms Beth James, principal at The Conservatoire. “Ballet unlocks creativity, movement and imagination that is lacking in today’s children because of video games and tablet devices. It builds confidence and self-esteem as children perform to an audience and develops a natural appreciation in children for music, theatre and the arts.” “Mathematics and physics is used when children learn patterns, rhythms and timing.
Precise moves and sequences are calculated and performed with purpose.” “History is learnt as children are always learning about where accompanying music, dance moves and sequences come from.” It’s this broad, unique and holistic approach to traditional ballet that contributes to the success of the students at school. Keep learning during the holidays
T
he Tomatis Method opened my ears and my brain: I can now read and understand my teacher!”
L
earning during the holidays can be a simple and fun family objective. Here’s some advice from Janice of NumberWorks’nWords:
Says Leo, an eight-year-old suffering from ADD and Auditory Processing Disorder. Leo needed his parents to repeat statements all the time and his teachers were constantly complaining him being disruptive. No more daily email from the teachers about Leo’s bad behaviour and poor academic performance.
• Have daily family reading of a favourite book • Family visits to museums, movies or the park stimulate conversation • Email friends and family about your holiday time • Write and post a letter to grandma • Play Junior Monopoly and other board games and card games • Estimate the grocery bill or work out change when you’re shopping • Bake a cake
They have specialist maths and English tuition, individualised for each child and their goals. It’s so much fun that it doesn’t feel like learning at all.
And to prepare your child for a great start at school, NumberWorks’nWords Holiday Course from January 18 will get them going.
For a free assessment and introductory lesson, call NumberWorks’nWords Subiaco on 9388 3727.

orking memory is the ability to keep information in mind for a short period of time and process this information. It is linked to our capacity to learn, resisting distractions, remembering instructions, reading comprehension, language skills, staying on-task, following multi-step instructions, planning, and focused attention. Children with working memory difficulties often make careless mistakes, don’t pay close attention to details, have trouble keeping attention on tasks, do not seem to be listening when spoken to, have trouble organising thoughts and often cannot follow instructions. Working Memory can be improved by online, computer training using Cogmed and these improvements can be sustained over the long term.
Because, Dyslexia is a physical condition, it’s important for parents to recognise that a Dyslexic child learns better through understanding rather than committing to memory. proper understanding rather than by memorising facts and information. Consequently, reading is taught phonetically and through the sounding of words, rather than by letter identification and memorising spelling lists,, which is what is donethe preferred method at conventional schools, which greatly benefits children with Dyslexia. Numerous research studies into the benefits of sensorial learning and the Montessori Method have concluded itswith positive results in general for all children, both with and without Dyslexia. Make it a Kidsafe summer for your family
C
hristmas celebrations, family trips and time off school make the summer holidays a fun and exciting time for children. Unfortunately, it is also a time when children are nearly four times more likely to visit PMH Emergency Department with an injury.
The club of choice for gymnasts
W
inner of Gymnastic WA Champion Club of the year 2013 and 2014, The Northern Districts Gymnastics Club (NDGC) believes in gymnastics for all and caters for the whole family.
Supported by the Department of Health, this summer Kidsafe WA is focusing on Keeping Kids Safe while on holidays. Help safety shine through this summer, without spoiling your summer fun. Follow these tips for travel, toy, water and celebration safety:
Their well-known Kindy programs are completely hands on and help children develop fundamental motor skills, creativity, self-esteem, coordination, confidence in a fun and playful space.
• Follow the age recommendations when buying toys and provide the safety equipment to go with toys with wheels.
The NDGC recreational program runs every weekday afternoon and Saturday morning. The program will contain the four “F’s” of gymnastics - Fun, Fundamentals, Fitness and Friendship. The gymnast progresses through skills at their own pace at the level appropriate to their development.
• Ensure your child is appropriately restrained for their age and size when travelling in the car. • Create safe play areas away from moving vehicles. • If you have to leave the car , even to run a quick errand, take your kids with you. • Always supervise children around water. • Don’t neglect the supervision of children during family gatherings and holiday parties.
