oin Variety – the Children’s Charity of WA, and thousands of other families as they get into the Christmas spirit at Perth’s premier carols event at the picturesque Langley P ark on Sunday 18 December. For the first time in 72 years, the IGA Carols by Candlelight for Variety will be a free event – giving all WA families the opportunity to participate in this iconic Perth Christmas tradition. The day will also start at the new time of 1pm, making it a fantastic family day out. Grab a spot and enjoy an afternoon of show rides, face painting, food stalls and pre carols onstage entertainment featuring Wasamba – Freo’s Carnival Drummers, and the Mighty Marvel Essence of Christmas Show, followed by autographs and photos with Spiderman, Ironman and Mrs Claus.

The evening will finish with a bang – a fireworks spectacular over the Swan River. “We are thrilled to have performances from a wide range of Australian talent, but I am most looking forward to seeing the kids singing along and enjoying a real family event,” Variety WA CEO, Michael Pailthorpe said. “Christmas is such a special time that brings families together and we are so ex cited to be able to partner with our generous sponsors to make this a free event for the first time in its 72 year history. This will allow all WA families the opportunity to enjoy this iconic Perth Christmas tradition, all whilst raising funds to help empower WA kids who are sick, disadvantaged or have special needs to live, laugh and learn.” All funds raised on the day will support Variety WA and children who are sick, disadvantaged or have special needs.

How do I discipline my two-year-old? Sally W - Butler

Discipline is about helping children learn how to behave appropriately and as well as how not to behave. It is less about punishment and more about working with them to teach them the basics of good behaviour. Two-year-olds are developing skills to test limits – jumping, running, throwing and climbing to name a few. Their newly found skills often result in inappropriate behaviour – running out into the street, jumping on the couch or throwing food.

Rather than constantly saying no, help them learn the right behaviours. Discipline requires time, effort and patience. Kneel down to their eye level and explain to them why they cannot do it and perhaps what can happen if they do do it. For example, you cannot jump on the couch – if you do, you can hurt yourself. No jumping – jumping is dangerous. Keeping the explanation simple gives them enough time to absorb what you are saying before their attention span runs out. Steer your child away from misbehaviour by distracting them with something else. Be consistent with your discipline. Praise good behaviour. Your child will eventually start to learn the cause and effect of what they are doing as they approach the age of three.

Stress free kindy kids

he transition from home to school is not easy but there are things parents can do to help their child quickly settle at school. Before term starts, talk about the teacher by saying things like “I wonder if Mrs X likes books about animals too?” Talk about the fun things that happen in Pre-Kindy and Kindy and what their classroom looks like. If your child does become stressed or anxious, draw a little heart on their hand that they can see throughout the day. And when it’s time for the parents to say goodbye in the morning, do so without delay. Make the focus on reconnecting with them
