Creativity is king at the Victoria Carlton Centre

V

ictoria Carlton, known by many as ‘the child whisperer’, believes children learn better if they’re allowed to express themselves in the learning environment. All her programs (maths and literacy) contain creative elements that involve art, craft and imagination. Research on brain-compatible learning suggests that these creative elements lead to higher academic outcomes. Engaging in art activities provides a space for children to focus, think and dream, which are all essential elements of learning. Victoria Carlton’s unique education method is both encouraging and fun, which fosters children’s love of learning. But more than that, Victoria’s students see real results in their schooling, giving them the confidence for the next year of learning.

getting hands-on.’ Teachers from around the world have adopted the Victoria Carlton method in their schools, and have helped thousands of children reach their potential. All her licensed centres also use the worldfamous JOLLY PHONICS and JOLLY GRAMMAR methods to teach literacy. And all educators are formally trained in the Victoria Carlton method to ensure the best outcomes for students. Victoria puts children at the centre of all of her innovative programs, which are continually updated based on the latest research. ‘Education is not a static, dead affair,’ she said. ‘It must always be centred around the real needs of the children.’

Although worksheets accompany all of her literacy and maths programs, Victoria says that much of the learning is hands-on.

ancing is so much fun that people may not realise how highly physical it is. Children who dance improve their fine and gross motor skills, their flexibility, stamina, hand eye coordination, muscle tone, posture, balance and coordination. Director of Kindy Dance Time, Lara Gandini, says dancing in the early years has many other benefits too – and it’s a great way to promote children’s social, emotional and cognitive development. ‘Our main aim at Kindy Dance Time is to encourage and broaden a child’s love of dance,’ she said. ‘But because of our expertly-created syllabus, we’re also seeing many more advancements in their overall development. Dancing helps children learn to identify patterns and teaches them numerical concepts like sequences. It also helps with their confidence, self-esteem, social skills, listening and concentration. ‘They also learn to express emotion and imagination without vocabulary,’ said Lara. ‘Something that people don’t immediately think about when they think about dance.’ Kindy Dance Time teachers are

professionals in preschool dance, and teach from a highly acclaimed syllabus designed for children aged 2–5, which is endorsed by early years professionals such as occupational therapists and early childhood educators. ‘Our teachers share a passion for teaching dance to preschoolers and are all highly trained,’ Lara said. Programs are age-specific at Kindy Dance Time, with students divided into different age groups. Classes have themes such as ‘At the Farm’ and ‘Under the Sea’ makes them even more fun for preschoolers. ‘We also like to keep things fast-paced to keep toddlers and pre-schoolers engaged,’ said Lara. Kindy Dance Time offers classes in more than 20 Perth suburbs. Kindy A classes, for children aged 2 to 3.5, run for 30 minutes and require parent participation. Kindy B classes run for 45 minutes and cater for 3.5–5 year olds, and parents are permitted to stay and watch.
