Creativity is king at the Victoria Carlton Centre

V

ictoria Carlton, known by many as ‘the child whisperer’, believes children learn better if they’re allowed to express themselves in the learning environment. All her programs (maths and literacy) contain creative elements that involve art, craft and imagination. Research on brain-compatible learning suggests that these creative elements lead to higher academic outcomes. Engaging in art activities provides a space for children to focus, think and dream, which are all essential elements of learning. Victoria Carlton’s unique education method is both encouraging and fun, which fosters children’s love of learning. But more than that, Victoria’s students see real results in their schooling, giving them the confidence for the next year of learning.

getting hands-on.’ Teachers from around the world have adopted the Victoria Carlton method in their schools, and have helped thousands of children reach their potential. All her licensed centres also use the worldfamous JOLLY PHONICS and JOLLY GRAMMAR methods to teach literacy. And all educators are formally trained in the Victoria Carlton method to ensure the best outcomes for students. Victoria puts children at the centre of all of her innovative programs, which are continually updated based on the latest research. ‘Education is not a static, dead affair,’ she said. ‘It must always be centred around the real needs of the children.’

Although worksheets accompany all of her literacy and maths programs, Victoria says that much of the learning is hands-on.

ancing is so much fun that people may not realise how highly physical it is. Children who dance improve their fine and gross motor skills, their flexibility, stamina, hand eye coordination, muscle tone, posture, balance and coordination. Director of Kindy Dance Time, Lara Gandini, says dancing in the early years has many other benefits too – and it’s a great way to promote children’s social, emotional and cognitive development. ‘Our main aim at Kindy Dance Time is to encourage and broaden a child’s love of dance,’ she said. ‘But because of our expertly-created syllabus, we’re also seeing many more advancements in their overall development. Dancing helps children learn to identify patterns and teaches them numerical concepts like sequences. It also helps with their confidence, self-esteem, social skills, listening and concentration. ‘They also learn to express emotion and imagination without vocabulary,’ said Lara. ‘Something that people don’t immediately think about when they think about dance.’ Kindy Dance Time teachers are

professionals in preschool dance, and teach from a highly acclaimed syllabus designed for children aged 2–5, which is endorsed by early years professionals such as occupational therapists and early childhood educators. ‘Our teachers share a passion for teaching dance to preschoolers and are all highly trained,’ Lara said. Programs are age-specific at Kindy Dance Time, with students divided into different age groups. Classes have themes such as ‘At the Farm’ and ‘Under the Sea’ makes them even more fun for preschoolers. ‘We also like to keep things fast-paced to keep toddlers and pre-schoolers engaged,’ said Lara. Kindy Dance Time offers classes in more than 20 Perth suburbs. Kindy A classes, for children aged 2 to 3.5, run for 30 minutes and require parent participation. Kindy B classes run for 45 minutes and cater for 3.5–5 year olds, and parents are permitted to stay and watch. However, now it’s generally accepted that the most effective treatment for ADHD should involve a range of treatments with options also including behavioural therapy, psycho-education, lifestyle and diet changes and Neurofeedback Therapy (brainwave training). Summer water safety

W

ater activities are a big part of the Australian lifestyle – and can be great fun for the whole family.

Along with these activities around water, however, comes the risk of child drownings, particularly for children aged under five years old. It’s important to be aware of these dangers and know how to keep your children safe around water. The home swimming pool is a high risk location for child drownings, but other water locations like the bathtub, fishponds, dams and buckets are also potential drowning locations. To keep your children safe around water this summer, ensure they are supervised by an adult around any depth of water. Supervision should be constant, active and within arm’s reach of your child – not an occasional glance between other tasks. When having family gatherings, designate an adult to supervise children and make sure everyone knows who this is.

• Remove any items around the fence that children could use to climb over. • Empty out other water locations as soon as you are finished with them, such as bathtubs, buckets and paddle pools.

• Ensure the pool fence is in good working condition.

Swimming classes and infant aquatic programs are great tools to help familiarise your children with water. For parents and carers, completing a first aid course and updating these skills regularly can help you to respond in an emergency if one occurs, and can help to reduce the seriousness of injuries. By taking these steps and being prepared, you can make sure that your family has an enjoyable, safe summer!

• Ensure the pool gate is in good working order and never propped open.

For more information on preventing child injuries visit kidsafewa.com.au

It’s also important to ensure that access to water locations is restricted, especially when children are not supervised. The following steps can help:

With limited Fairy Floss Ballet places, to enrol your little dancer go to: www.dancecreations.com.au | Contact Terrie on 0419 133 673 Locations: Bicton | Bull Creek | East Victoria Park | Brentwood | Rossmoyne

Therapy begins with a special scan, called a QEEG, which pinpoints the problem areas within the brain. These results allowing targeted and individualised treatment with a sophisticated brain-computer interface used to ‘strengthen’ and ‘re-train’ the brain.

Kids In Perth – The Parents’ Paper, December 2017 / January 2018 03

Get a handle on Christmas anxiety

LassoMedia

C

hristmas holidays are usually a time of excitement and fun for everyone, especially children, but for kids who struggle with anxiety, it can be a really stressful time.

Kids in Perth - The Parents’ Paper is a resource guide for parents containing solely advertising features. Kids in Perth - The Parents’ Paper is published monthly by Lasso KIP Pty Ltd at 8 Southport Street, West Leederville, WA 6007. Ph: (08) 9388 1600 Fx: (08) 9388 3566 www.kidsinperth.com A.C.N. 100 895 430 • ISSN No. 1443-3826

For anxious kids, the following tips will also help make the holidays a safer and more certain experience. Anticipate feelings – talk to your kids about the fact that they may be more excited or nervous than usual, over Christmas. Brief them – everyone deserves a proper briefing for an event that has expectations attached. How many people are coming to Christmas dinner? Who will be getting or giving presents? Role play – role play how to handle difficult situations, like receiving an unwanted gift. Maintain routines – It can be helpful to keep some school-time routines in place. Finally, just know that not everything will go smoothly. When it does, enjoy it!

Sometimes this pressure leads to changes in their behaviour. Some children may be more excitable – becoming sillier, more active and harder to settle down. Others may become quieter, more withdrawn or less interested in their usual pleasures. Here are some things to try to help your family cope with the excitement of the silly season:

visit a couple or set yourself a time limit for each stop – and stick to it! • Have realistic expectations of your child’s energy levels. If they’ve had a sleepover on Friday night, and Saturday was busy with activities, then Sunday needs to be a recovery day. • Stick to regular family routines around bedtime, naps and meals. • Prepare your child for the day by putting into words what is about to happen at Christmas, and the potential feelings that may arise – ‘Your grandparents are arriving today. We haven't seen them for a year, so it may feel a little strange at first.’ Lastly, as parents we’re human as well. So please remember to be kind to yourself over the holidays – it can be a very emotional time.

Reverse advent calendars for Christmas

S

ometimes we put so much time into our present list for Santa, we forget that nothing feels as good as giving. And while many of us prepare to feed a table full of family and friends, Foodbank WA are preparing to serve over one million meals to WA families in need. A reverse-advent calendar can be a great way to get your family into the spirit of giving – and make sure all West Australians sit down to a Christmas dinner this year. Unlike a normal advent calendar, where you receive a small treat everyday in the lead up to Christmas, with the reverse advent calendar you ‘give’ one item everyday to your ‘advent box’ and donate it to Foodbank WA before Christmas. On the Foodbank WA wish-list this year is – canned ham, canned vegetables, canned fruit, long life milk, canned soup, canned

tuna, canned baked beans, canned spaghetti, dried pasta, pasta sauce, rice, UHT custard, tea, coffee, dried fruit, fruit mince pies, canned Christmas pudding and personal care products. Non-perishable food can be donated directly to Foodbank WA or deposited in the Giving Boxes located at Hawaiian shopping centres across Perth. Thousands of people this year will turn to Foodbank WA for their Christmas meal, and at least 13,000 more will go without due to the lack of available food. Let’s make this the first year that no one goes without. For more information visit foodbankwa.org.au

Why does my child have 2 rows of teeth? The appearance of two rows of teeth is due to the adult teeth coming in behind or in front of the preceding baby teeth, before the baby teeth have fallen out. The most common site for this to happen is the lower front teeth. This happens in about 30% of children.

Proudly brought to you by

Sometimes the baby tooth or teeth may need to be removed, but in many cases the baby teeth fall out a few weeks after the adult teeth appear. You should speak to your Paediatric Dentist if the baby teeth do not fall out within a few weeks. An xray may be needed to see how much of the roots of the baby teeth remain and assess the need for extractions. T 9443 3922
