By Nicole Ohm, mum and manager at Brownes Dairy ow does your family celebrate Christmas Eve?

We posed this question to our friends and colleagues and their answers were as unique and diverse as the people we asked. From having fish and chips at the beach to sharing a pizza and kicking a footy in the park to going to midnight mass before a round of hot chocolates – or simply cuddling up at home to watch a Christmas movie in festive PJs. Every family seems to have their own way of making Christmas Eve a memorable and special time.

The first gift

,

DECEMBER 2018 / JANUARY 2019

Each year we lovingly leave out homebaked or store-bought cookies, by the fireplace or under the tree, with or without a sweet letter, note or gift – again, each family to its own. But one thing is for sure – Santa will have a belly full of delicious, fresh WA milk on Christmas Eve (just make sure you choose his favourite milk). As we reflected on this yearly ritual, we realised that for many small children, leaving milk for Santa is the very first gift they give to others. And that small act of giving takes us right to the very heart of what Christmas is all about.

From our family to yours, we wish you a Merry Christmas.

One thing most families with young kids do have in common is the ritual of leaving out milk and cookies for Santa – and carrots for his reindeer, of course.

I

n the process of growing up, most children experience periods of difficulty – and some children may need more help than others.

Children have a hard time sitting in a big chair and talking about their feelings. Developmentally, they lack the language skills to express what they’re feeling or thinking. Often they don’t understand why they feel ‘sick’ or ‘mad.’ They just do. Play therapy is a well-researched specialised counselling technique for children aged between two and 10. This type of therapy is used all over the world to address a wide range of childhood concerns – including anxiety, depression, grief and loss, anger, fear, sadness, shyness, social issues, chronic illness, trauma, and adjusting to family change. Play therapy is not like regular play. In play therapy, carefully selected toys, arts, and crafts are presented in a playroom. Here, with the help of a trusted therapist, children can express their inner world without words. The toys (chosen for their therapeutic value) become their ‘words’ and the play becomes their ‘language.’ In this way, play is to a child is what talking is to an adult. If a child is able to ‘play out’ their experiences and feelings, they are able to make sense of what is troubling them and work towards a place of

healing and resolution. The therapeutic relationship between the child and the ‘play therapist’ is very important in this kind of therapy. The child must feel comfortable, safe, trusting, accepted and understood by their therapist. Nina Fitch from Finding Balance Occupational Therapy and Play Therapy has plenty of experience building this all-important trust. Finding Balance Occupational Therapy and Play Therapy is based in Nedlands and offers a unique and well-respected service to children and their families or carers. They work with children with developmental and learning difficulties as well with children experiencing mental, emotional, social and behavioural issues. Goodstart Huntingdale Centre Director, Leah Tirant, said the children were loving their new natural play area. ‘When we first started planning this playground, we went to parents and educators to get their input,’ Miss Tirant said. ‘The overwhelming response was that they wanted the playground to feature as many natural elements as possible – with a backto-nature area for messy play, and the use of

Celebrate safely this summer

T

he summer holidays are a time of family gatherings and celebrations. Although this is an exciting time for children, unfortunately, it’s also the time when they’re most likely to injure themselves. Celebrations can be a little chaotic at times, which often leads to a lack of adult supervision – as there can be confusion over which adult is supervising when there are a number of people around.

Merry Christmas from all of us at Kids in Perth

SARAH POPE editor@lassomedia.com.au

During this time of year, many activities involve water or the road, and there may be exposure to novelty items or Christmas decorations that are not safe for children. Kidsafe WA recommends the following tips to help prevent child injuries during the holiday season: • Actively supervise children during gatherings and ensure everyone knows who is responsible for supervising the children. • Actively supervise children within arm’s reach when in or around water. Never leave young children in the care of older children when around water – it’s just too much responsibility. • Check that the pool fence and gate are in good working order and never propped open.

• Remember to clean up after a holiday party and immediately dispose of any leftover alcohol.

Sales Manager:

• Be aware that other homes you may visit may not be set up for small children, so always take a quick look to spot any hazards that may be around.

Sales and Distribution:

Accounts:

• Watch out for button batteries in novelty items or decorations. The casing can sometimes be flimsy and the batteries aren’t secured – and these can be extremely dangerous to children if ingested.

Why Montessori won me over

Mathematics is everywhere

By Nigel Wong, Montessori parent.

By Clive Kelly, MAWA

A

onsider how much we use mathematics each day. Whether reading a clock, measuring cooking ingredients or estimating distances – maths is integral to all we do.

C

s a parent, you may hear about Montessori from family and friends who’ve enrolled their children into a Montessori childcare or school but what makes it different?

There’s so much you can do with your children to get them practicing mathematics. For starters, try examining the geometry in buildings. Can you see any examples of quadrilaterals and triangles? Why do buildings rely on these shapes? What shapes are most efficient for building, stacking and storing?

While there are many unique characteristics associated with the Montessori Method, here are a few which inspired my decision towards choosing the Montessori Method for my child. • Multi Age Classrooms. Multi-age classrooms are a defining feature of Montessori preschools and schools because it gives children unique learning and social development opportunities. Younger children naturally learn by emulating their older peers so they develop faster while older children develop leadership through their mentoring of younger peers. In this environment, younger children are also more assertive while older children have greater empathy and respect towards others, even those who are younger. • A Learning environment which emphasizes responsibility and self-discipline. During lesson time, children are presented with various learning materials by their teacher and encouraged to make a choice. Being able to choose their own learning activities means children are empowered towards making a decision from an early age.

Being given responsibility means children are more willing to complete a task and happier to work independently. • Community of mutual respect & empathy. As a parent, I’ve observed my own child respectfully engaging with and speaking about his teachers more as peers rather than authority figures. A great social dynamic also exists amongst the children playing on the playground as they have friends both from the “older” and “younger” classes. Consequently, I believe this contributes towards being less bullying amongst the children. If my parent experiences resonate with you, I recommend for you to call your local Montessori childcares or schools to find out more.

Why not examine the relationships between two-dimensional shapes and threedimensional objects while you’re at it? Exploring these kinds of concepts with your children and you’re sure to get them thinking mathematically. You might even want to consider how we

judge distance and speed while travelling, throwing a ball, playing a game of chase. Can you tell how fast your car is going by counting? For more ways to foster a love of maths, visit mawainc.org.au

Smart kids play music

W

hile every child can enjoy, learn and grow through music, there is increasing evidence to show that active participation in musical activities can actually alter the anatomy of the brain.

PARENTS LOVE THE RESULTS

Researchers believe that early musical experiences intensify the development of ‘neuronal synapses’ – essentially enhancing a child’s ability to think, learn, reason and create. Children need to take part to get the most from their musical education – to sing, clap, dance and remember movements. Ideally, parents should aim to expose their children to musical activities prior to age two, when the most mental development takes place. However, children still learn at an advanced rate until around 10 years of age. Forte School of Music has developed programs suitable for children as young as six months of age. Backstage with Amelia Ryan

C

abaret darling (and new mum) Amelia Ryan returns to Fringe World with two astounding new shows to delight both parents and bubs. But before she gets into full festival mode, we asked her a few questions about her new shows and her new role as a mum.

Tell us a bit about yourself as a person & performer. I find it hard to distinguish between these three aspects of my life as they’re all so inherently linked, but here goes: As a person, I’m full of paradoxes - I’m as funny as I am serious, I’m as spontaneous as I am disciplined, and I’m as extraverted as I am introverted. But mostly, I’m curious, an open book, and eager to experience all of life’s offerings. I’m also tired. Very, very tired. See below. As a parent, I try to be responsive (even at 2 o’clock in the morning), very loving (to the point of smothering), and playful - I love being a big kid with Archie. I’ve also been known to yell and scream ‘why won't you just sleep' at aforementioned 2 o’clock in the morning, so I’m far from perfect too. As a performer, well, my aim is to bring to the stage the kind of conversations you might have with your bestie at 1am, after a few wines. But perhaps (hopefully) a little

better articulated. I like to be honest, to make people laugh, perhaps think a little differently, and maybe even pull at the heartstrings.

your besties, a bottle of wine and let's all lament our pelvic floor.

How has parenting and

Tell us about your 2 Fringe

motherhood changed your

World Shows, what’re they all

comedy and creative

about? Who is your audience?

process?

I’ll be returning to Fringe World with both a show for Mums (and the brave dads) and, for the first time, a show for kids! I wanted to make a show that I could bring my little boy along to, full of lots of singing and dancing, aimed at the under fives. Admittedly, I'm a little uninspired by current hits for kids (I mean, Baby Shark?), so I thought why not rehash some of the tunes we grew up on! And so ‘80s Baby!’ was born. So you’ll hear everything from play school classics to Peter Coombe, right through to Madonna and WHAM, so plenty for parents and carers too. How can you not bust a move to the 80s! But I might throw in a few current hits just so the kids have plenty that they recognise too. As for Simply The Breast, this is one where you’ll definitely need to leave the kids at home. Featuring the (self-appointed) best songs from all of my shows to date, I’ll take you on an honest, relatable and hilarious journey from mayhem to motherhood. Grab

check us out on the web: www.kidsinperth.com

What’s changed about my creative process is that it’s less of a ‘process’ and more of a 'mad scramble'! I’m only just starting to look into daycare for Archie now, so most of my work gets done when he sleeps. But you know what they say - the magic happens when you’re under pressure! (With plenty of coffee). And motherhood continues to dish out plenty of new comedy material, so hopefully I’ll continue to dish up plenty of new stuff parents can laugh (and cry!) ttoo. Archie inspires me to be present, playful and constantly curious about the world. I think that’s a great, and very fitting, approach to the creative process.

What inspired your shows? I’ve always been inspired by things that happen in my life. I write autobiographically, and like to think of my shows as a bit of a

public service - I share stories from my life so people leave feeling better about their lives. I talk about my childhood, questionable career moves (don’t ask), poor decisions with the opposite sex (again, don’t ask), wine, the quest for self-betterment (or lack there of), pregnancy, and now, the joys of motherhood! I write a lot of parodies…I love to think about a topic, and then come up with a fitting song and totally reinterpret the words. Who knew Supercalafragalistic would be such an appropriate song to discuss the multitude of unwelcome pregnancy symptoms? Simply the Breast runs from 5–9 Feb and 80’s Baby runs from 9–10 Feb (ages 0–5). Tickets are available from fringeworld.com.au
