More than just speech and language

C

lare was born more than 14 weeks premature and given a 95% chance of physical or mental disability, which is why parents, Wylie and Sharon Collins, could never have foreseen how Clare has been excelling at school. ‘We never expected this outcome, but she was above kids in her class in terms of reading and writing for Year 3 NAPLAN (National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy),’ Wylie said. ‘She was above the national average and in some regards she was in the top 25%. That blew us away.’ Because of her prematurity, Clare’s parents took part in regular reviews with the Child Development Centre in Perth, who placed Clare in the bottom one percentile of cognitive ability at the age of two. By the time she reached kindy, it was clear to Wylie and Sharon that Clare wasn’t keeping up with her peers, despite having speech therapy. They began looking for somewhere with a multifaceted approach to learning, and found Telethon Speech and Hearing’s Talkabout program in Wembley.

‘The difference with this program, compared to others, is that it treats the whole child,’ Wylie explained. ‘You think that it’s just a speech and language centre, but it’s not. They do so many other things that help. Within a class you’d have occupational and speech therapy, psychologists, access to audiologists, and a Family Liaison Officer. And so you see all that support throughout the day. It’s all about the care for the child and the child growing and developing. For us, this was highly critical. I think that was the real key. And it felt like joining a family.’ Clare completed the Talkabout program for kindy and pre-primary alongside her mainstream schooling and her parents believe this has been a major contributor to the success she is enjoying today. Telethon Speech and Hearing’s Talkabout program helps families of children who are concerned with speech and/or language delays or disorders. Now accepting enrolments for 2020. Where nature and imagination collide

We help children who struggle with their emotions, learn better ways to cope with life’s challenges

G

oodstart Early Learning ensures that every dollar generated is invested back into their centres, people and programs to support children and families. The latest centre to benefit from this reinvestment is Goodstart Early Learning Carlisle, who have received a substantial playground upgrade. The upgrade, which took nine weeks to complete, is well shaded and is divided into two large areas. The new nature playground has lots of open space for children to run, play and use their imagination.

GROUP PROGRAMS Our solution-focused group programs help children develop effective coping skills for rapid postive change

The children contributed to the design by letting everyone know that a cubby house was very important to them. The cubby house was even built slightly higher so they could see the trains as they pass.

WEEKEND PROGRAMS Join us for five sessions on Saturdays and Sundays

‘Wow, this is magic,’ said Jacob, aged five, when he saw the newly built playground. To arrange a tour of a Goodstart Early Learning centre near you, simply call 1800 222 543 or visit goodstart.org.au

he summer holidays are a time of family gatherings and celebrations. Although this is an exciting time for children, unfortunately, it’s also the time when they’re most likely to injure themselves. Celebrations can be a little chaotic at times, which often leads to a lack of adult supervision – as there can be confusion over which adult is supervising when there are a number of people around.

reach when in or around water. Never leave young children in the care of older children when around water – it’s just too much responsibility.

During this time of year, many activities involve water or the road, and there may be exposure to novelty items or Christmas decorations that are not safe for children.

• Remember to clean up after a holiday party and immediately dispose of any leftover alcohol.

Kidsafe WA recommends the following tips to help prevent child injuries during the holiday season:

• Be aware that other homes you may visit may not be set up for small children, so always take a quick look to spot any hazards that may be around.

• Actively supervise children during gatherings and ensure everyone knows who is responsible for supervising the children. • Actively supervise children within arm’s

• Check that the pool fence and gate are in good working order and never propped open.

• Watch out for button batteries in novelty items or decorations. The casing can sometimes be flimsy and the batteries aren’t

secured – and these can be extremely dangerous to children if ingested. Together we can keep children injury free this holiday season. For more information on keeping kids safe at home, on the road and at play, visit kidsafewa.com.au

very year we waste a huge amount of money on unwanted presents and thousands of tonnes of wrapping paper. Save time, money and the environment this Christmas by following these tips: • Use pillowcases, tea towels or sheets as wrapping instead. • Reuse wrapping paper and save wrapping paper for next year. • Tie gifts with string or ribbon rather than sticky tape. Give gifts that create minimal waste, like: • An experience (tickets, memberships or a voucher). • Something homemade. • Something second-hand. • Making your ‘gift’ an act of service – like delivering a cooked meal, repairing clothes, washing the car or cleaning the house. If you can’t re-gift an unwanted present, donate it to charity. For more tips, visit faceyourwaste.com.au

s the holiday season fast approaches, it’s important to maintain children’s mathematics skills. Here are some simple ideas to foster interest in mathematics over the holidays – without the pain of drills and homework.

When playing card games, ask your children to add the totals of the cards they win.

Casa Mia Montessori School PreKindy to Yr 6 (3 - 12 years)

While in the car, ask children to add the numbers on car numberplates. The first to add to 50 (or more) wins the round. Change the target number – from 100 to 20 to 75. Ask children if they can see number plates where the total of the digits is 10 or 20. It will keep them occupied for a few minutes as well as boost their number skills.

Confidence and conversation

t’s hard to keep playing the drums a secret. When 11-year-old Thomas Horn started learning, the neighbours knew about it. As he dedicates time to mastering each beat, he soon finds himself moving onto more difficult rhythms.

Casual or Vocational Programmes for Girls and Boys

Since June, Thomas has also been putting extra time into his schoolwork, and it shows. Pre- and posttesting in his last year at primary school show that his reading age has improved significantly. His parents credit the two terms he has been at NumberWorks’nWords. Like the drums, it was Thomas’ idea.

‘Twinkle Toes’ – 3 years & up

‘My friend was going to NumberWorks’nWords,’ said Thomas. ‘I thought it sounded okay so I asked my mum if I could try it out. She was happy because it had to do with school and I don’t usually want to do school stuff.’ ‘At NumberWorks’nWords English and reading is fun, instead of copying off the board and doing worksheets,’ he added. ye contact, greetings, everyday chitchat and speaking in full sentences are such important things to learn. But with technology crowding our lives, it’s easy to see why children are losing the art of conversation. That’s where the Helen O’Grady Drama Academy’s unique drama program can help. For over 40 years, the academy has been helping children gain confidence in their verbal communication skills. Classes are taught in a fun, stimulating way and include speech training, dramatic play, creative movement, music, storytelling, dress-ups and more. At the Helen O’Grady Drama Academy, children can connect and converse in a safe environment that fosters creativity and imagination.
