Kip McGrath Education Centres leaders in learning ip McGrath Education Centres in Perth are leaders in the Australian tuition industry, using state of the art technology to deliver supplementary learning programmes in English and Maths to children from age 4 to Year 10. Some centres also offer specific programmes for Year 11 and 12 WACE level, as well as Study Skills. Special programmes run for Kindy and Pre-Primary children, incorporating a unique computer programme to help develop early literacy and numeracy skills.

K

Why are Kip Centres so successful? The Kip McGrath philosophy is: “All children can learn, they only need to be taught well”. Children are first assessed to determine their strengths and weaknesses and then programmes designed to suit the specific needs of the individual child, whether they be remedial, extension, ESL or preparation for exams. All tutors are qualified and experienced teachers. This is very important as students who are struggling with a concept need professional knowledge on how to break tasks down, where to find the best resource and how to teach a child who may not have grasped it the first time. Parents regularly express amazement at how quickly their children can improve and develop in areas which they find difficult. Catering to

the particular learning style of the student is very important. Dyslexic children, for example, need to be taught differently to many other children because they are visual learners and require more structure and repetition to develop basic skills. Other children are more auditory, so the approach would be different. With the change to National Curriculum in WA, many students are finding that the expectation is now much higher and they are struggling to keep up. Centres are seeing many students who have never had issues, suddenly floundering with expectations beyond their current skill. Teachers are now recommending Kip McGrath centres to parents as they recognise that students improve their skills rapidly. By far the biggest source of new business for Perth centres is from recommendation. This is a strong indication that clients and teachers are very happy with the service and prepared to tell others. Call now to book a free assessment: Balcatta 9240 2335, Gosnells 9490 7822, Ellenbrook 9297 3654, Jandakot 9414 8088, Joondalup 9301 2334, Mundaring 9295 6255, Victoria Park 9472 7480, Willetton 9259 4833.

Effective study skills f course the internet and social media have forever changed the landscape of the way students study, and in order to acquire effective study skills, students need to know their way around media, the internet and be able to think flexibly, problem solve and develop effective study habits.

O

Self-motivation is a very large part of the course and ICE teachers spend substantial time helping students formulate goals and identify ways to attain these. If students are not motivated to succeed and do their best, no amount of study skills coaching will work. This is the most essential part of the workshop.

When teachers at ICE first started teaching Study Skills the course was relatively stable with only minor tweaks being added each year. Now, it needs to change slightly each time to reflect new understandings of social media and information gathering. This makes the course very dynamic, very “now”, and ensures students are actively involved and engaged.

Often, they need to help students improve essay writing skills and learn to edit their work to a high standard. Students are taught to identify and avoid procrastination by creating a timeline then implementing tried and proven time management techniques. Many parents and students report that the course helps them in all areas of their lives as it is essentially about organisation, motivation and achieving goals.

Many students achieve very high results and a number of totally creative, disorganised kids learn to work with their own learning style which makes them more motivated and organised. “Now we devote far more time to organisation, time management and using digital media and internet resources,” says ICE Director, Victoria Carlton. “We teach students to identify their own learning style, profile their multiple intelligences and learn to work with their specific learning style and intelligence cocktail.”

The course runs for 15 hours and is available all through terms 1, 2, 3 and also during school holiday periods. The ICE teachers also visit schools to present these courses to students. Please call ICE on 9271 4200 to enquire or email them on victoriacarlton@iinet.net.au the course is available online from March. Visit www.ice-au.com and find tips for students and teachers on their Facebook page.

Visual stress / dyslexia specialists

Peace of mind for your family? s a parent, have you ever considered:

A

ach year thousands of children suffer from undetected vision problems that can make school and life difficult. The eyechart cannot check how well children coordinate their eyes at close distances required for reading or how well they can adjust focus from near to distance.

E

• Who will care for your children if you and your spouse die? • How will future carers meet the costs of raising your children? • Will your home have to be sold? • Will your children still benefit financially from your estate if your surviving spouse remarries? • Can your children’s inheritances be protected? Sadly, few parents action their thoughts and undertake the necessary legal and financial planning to ensure that their children and loved ones are looked after following their death. This failure to plan ahead often has devastating consequences for those left behind.

these circumstances, contact Summers Legal to arrange a complimentary initial meeting. Their specialist lawyers can assist you with all matters relating to your estate planning including the drafting of your wills, enduring powers of attorney and advice on taxeffective estate planning.

Some symptoms of vision problems include: • Skipping words or lines • Frequently re-reading the same line • Rubbing eyes or blinking frequently when reading • Poor comprehension of reading content • Frustration and low self-esteem For more information call 9399 2599.

Why a Will is not estate planning

New approach to pain relief at Remedy Pain Centre

ost people realise that making a Will is essential and that not doing so can result in much hard-ache and/or legal expense for your loved ones.

M

outh and young adults in chronic pain, to date, have had limited treatment options in Western Australia. The Remedy Pain Centre offers individual and group programmes for patients.

Y

But did you know that: • The correct choice of Executors and back-ups is essential?

This new multidisciplinary specialist clinic dedicated to assessing and treating persistent pain for people aged 6-30 years has recently opened. Medications can be of some benefit, however self-management strategies that help to address the other elements of pain (physical, social, emotional, etc.) can greatly improve a person’s function and quality of life.

• Superannuation, some life insurances, trusts and jointly owned property fall outside your deceased estate and therefore need particular care?

Parents/carers are offered group education and support programmes.

• By including a Testamentary Trust in your Will you can provide your beneficiaries with significant tax breaks and asset protection?

More details can be found on their Facebook page. Medicare rebates are available.

• Home-made Wills (including so called “Solicitor approved” Wills) are the cause of much litigation?

Contact the Remedy Pain Centre for queries and appointments. Email admin@remedypain.com.au or phone (08) 9430 4668. Located at 207 High St, Fremantle.

Young people will learn how to break the cycle of pain in order to lead a better life.

• Wills need reviewing in a wide range of circumstances such as: Separation and

divorce; any sale, mortgage or gift of the willed assets; buying and selling property; arranging your super and life insurances? • Estate planning for blended families is complex and has multiple solutions? Murfett Legal staff are experts in these areas. Phone Tyn Receveur on 9388 3100 for a free initial discussion about your needs.

Stonehenge heading to Perth

Life is full of exciting changes – is your Will up to date?

n a landmark Perth Festival event, Turner Prize-winning British artist Jeremy Deller will relocate Stonehenge to Perth. Part homage, part anarchism, Sacrilege is a history lesson on a bouncy castle.

I

Continuing Deller’s fascination with our reflection on the past, Sacrilege stunningly reimagines one of the world’s most iconic prehistoric monuments as an inflatable and interactive sculpture. The sprawling, full-scale installation is characteristic of Deller’s ability to create memorable art experiences for the young and young at heart, as it allows audiences to irreverently – and literally! – leap into ancient British history. There are some very important intangibles that will help with their attitude and their ability to deal with the challenges of new school work. A high quality martial arts curriculum like the one used at Shobukan Karate marries education, fitness and entertainment. Kids develop a sense of Self Confidence by becoming more proficient in Karate. As their sense of self-confidence rises it

then positively affects their academic performance in a positive way. The fear of raising their hands to answer questions disappears. They are more driven by ambition and are not afraid to set goals for themselves. Phone 9309 1444 for a free trial or register online at www.karatekids.net.au

“Children are naturally active and parents can encourage this behaviour by providing opportunities for children to engage in safe and semi-structured play so they are introduced to a more physically active lifestyle now and in the future.”

As a result, the first aid training offered by Family First Aid is different because it has a practical focus on children and family concerns. Developed by Steven Lewsen, a former ambulance officer and medical lecturer, it provides practical knowledge that can be applied immediately if required.

A quality dance education

Your children are amazing – help them prove it

ance Venture offers a well-balanced dance education for young people. In addition to excellent ballet programmes for pre-schoolers to vocational levels, they also run complimentary programmes in contemporary dance and jazz ballet, all taught by fully qualified and experienced teachers who are experts in their field.

D

umberWorks’nWords specialist tuition in maths and English can help your child to improve their confidence and skills in the core subjects, and show just how amazing they really are.

N

The NumberWorks’nWords learning environment is vibrant and the lessons harness the power of fun. Your child gets specialist tutors in each subject with face to face individualised tuition using purposewritten software to support learning.

The school participates in ballet exams (RAD all levels) and has a long history of students who have graduated to professional careers in ballet/dance.

All aspects of English are covered, including reading, comprehension, spelling, grammar and writing. The maths program covers the Australian curriculum from numbers to problem solving.

and parents receive regular progress reports.

NumberWorks’nWords caters for students either struggling or bursting to race ahead

Phone Janice at NumberWorks’nWords Subiaco now on 9388 3727.

NumberWorks’nWords offers an assessment and introductory lesson free, so your child can experience for themselves that it’s so much fun it doesn’t feel like learning.

Focus is on the quality and content of their programmes, rather than costuming and other less relevant aspects of learning to dance. Students make friends for life and are supportive and caring with each other. Mentorship is actively encouraged and our older students are great role models for the younger classes. Vocational students may attend daily

classes, including specialist conditioning/stretch/repertoire/competition classes. All new students are offered a try-out before completing enrolment. Visit the Dance Venture website for more information www.danceventure.com.au

Terrie Wayside (Creative Director) has an innate ability to nurture, encourage and inspire, resulting in unique and creative ways of relating with the dancers. She has a true love of working with children and is passionate about dance being a holistic experience. It’s not just about the movement, but also how your child is relating, growing in confidence, and being supported in this growth. The Fairy Floss Ballet classes offer a magical space for children aged 2.5 to 5 years to express their creativity through dress ups, mime, song and music, exploring how our body moves.
