The basics do matter
Opening up the world of learning in-centre and on-line
by Victoria Carlton, Director International Centre for Excellence
By Julie Courtis (Willetton) ip McGrath Education centres have been providing individualised learning programmes for children in Australia for over 35 years. Experienced teachers provide support for students who find school work difficult, for children wishing to excel or who are preparing for exams.
K
Now, Online Tutoring opens up a whole new world of opportunities for children to be tutored at home with a qualified, caring teacher taking the lesson in real time. Kip McGrath’s multimillion dollar advances in technology allow children to access the proven methods of tuition only previously available in-centre. All you need is an up to date computer and an internet connection. At Kip McGrath, students work on individually designed programs with computer and manual activities to revise and consolidate their learning. They learn how to learn as well as what to learn. Homework tasks are specifically designed to revise and consolidate the teaching and learning which takes place during sessions. Early intervention and development of confidence are the keys to getting on top of any issues that your child may be having with learning. By identifying areas needing attention, individualising programs, using quality resources
and professional tutors, Kip McGrath Education Centres are able to help students move forward with their learning, with particular emphasis on English and Maths skills. All students can learn, given the right teaching and tutors at Kip McGrath Centres pride themselves on assessing, devising programs and quality teaching to give students the opportunity to reach their full potential.
very day teachers at ICE see casualties of the “fuzzy think” approach to education. They see children who cannot read, spell, write coherently and cannot perform the simplest of mental maths functions.
E
Just ask the really simple questions: Can my child read, write and spell? Can my child add, subtract, multiply and divide?
If you are concerned about your child’s academic achievements in 2014 or believe that he/she is not reaching their true potential, call your local Kip McGrath Education Centre today and discuss the in-centre and online options available.
Many parents have been told basic processes such as tables no longer matter. This is errant nonsense. Children need their tables to be able to problem solve, divide and perform many simple maths tasks in the workplace and at home.
Parents gain peace of mind and support by bringing their children to Kip McGrath. Proven methods gain results! They are here to help.
They also need to be able to write proper sentences that contain nouns, verbs, adverbs and adjectives and to know which is which.
For further information and to book your free assessment visit the Kip McGrath websites at www.kipmcgrath.com.au and www.kiponline.com.au or call: Balcatta (9240 2335), Booragoon (9330 4003), Ellenbrook (9297 3654), Gosnells (9490 7822), Jandakot (9414 8088), Joondalup (9301 2334), Mundaring (9295 6255), North Perth (9227 1043), Victoria Park (9472 7480) or Willetton (9259 4833).
Let us get back to basics: teach the children to read and appreciate books, spell well and write in a flowing manner. Teach them their tables and how to add, subtract, multiply and divide. These skills can be taught in creative ways with plenty of problem solving built in to the program. Children love to master new
concepts and have success with their learning. They are naturally curious learners and will rise to the expectations we set. It is time to raise the bar! This is not new stuff. It’s not even a radical idea. It is a heartfelt plea to give our children a chance, to give them the proper foundations for learning. The basics are not boring, they are the lifeblood of education and provide the key to well informed and successful futures. All subjects are unavailable to a child who cannot read. All sciences and understanding of abstract thoughts are lost to those who cannot grasp the concepts of basic maths and logic. All professions are unavailable to children who lack the “basics”. Teachers at ICE offer the “basics”. Victoria Carlton’s vision is to help all children reach their full potential. They may not all win Nobel prizes or become university professors, but that will not be because they weren’t given a chance to learn. They will at least have the basics; the best foundation to be able to choose any profession they wish.

he Federal Government’s national budget is encouraging more diversity, flexibility and participation in the Australian jobs market. This is good news for early childhood educators and Early Learning Centres.
They can help set you and your kids up for success by developing a black belt mindset and confidence that will be the first stage of bully-proofing your kids. A reality-based self defence system helps lead the way in Perth’s martial arts scene. ATI Martial Arts’ unique rotational curriculum that gets better faster results from the lessons. Martial arts, specifically Taekwondo (Korean karate), is renowned for developing coordination, focus and confidence in children and is recommended by many specialist doctors. Their reputation has been established over 30 years of our dedication and service to the community.

Female workforce participation has grown steadily in Australia in recent decades, yet mothers of children under 15 years are still under-represented by national and Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) standards, in comparison to fathers and women without children. Recent public debate suggests this problem has numerous contributing factors, many of which lie within the remit of the Federal Government’s Childcare and Early Childhood Learning system. Following a recent inquiry conducted by
The Productivity Commission, the main focus point should be on providing a better funded, flexible, affordable and accessible Childcare and Early Learning system. Randstad Education, specialists in Early Childhood Recruitment. If you are looking for a career in Early Childhood call 08 9320 1688.

Be super health-wise and immunise
T
o stay healthy and avoid serious infections, it’s wise to immunise!
Shady tent sites are centered around the campers’ kitchen. You’re even able to cook the crabs and barbecue the fish you’ve caught in the beautiful waterways of the Mandurah and Peel Region.
Immunisation is a safe, simple and effective way to help protect your loved ones from nasty bugs such as Whooping cough, Chickenpox, Measles, Mumps and Rubella. Of course the little sting is never a pleasant thing, but like the old saying goes, ‘it’s what’s on the inside that counts’ right? Inside every vaccine is a weakened form of virus which once injected produces antibodies that help fight disease. Immunisation also boosts our own natural defence systems, benefitting those around us by stopping infections from spreading. It’s estimated that vaccinations currently save around three million lives each year. That’s three times the size of Perth’s population! That means the next time your little one is indulging in a mud pie or sharing lunch with

here are plenty of opportunities for kids to get involved with the 2015 Perth International Arts Festival, starting with The Future Postal Service. Children move through a series of stations – thinking, drawing, writing and training to be a ‘postie’ – before they put on the official blue hat and make their first delivery to a person walking by. The Future Postal Service takes children’s voices into the public sphere, empowering them to navigate the space and connect with adults in a meaningful way. ood hearing provides the foundation for early speech, language, social and learning skills in children. Even mild hearing loss in one can be devastating for a child’s development and confidence. While severe hearing loss is easily identified, milder forms are commonly branded selective hearing, inattention and behavioural problems. How do you recognise signs of hearing loss in your child? Common causes include frequent ear infections, genetics, pregnancy or birth complications, infectious diseases (e.g. measles & meningitis), and syndromes that affect hearing (e.g. Down’s Syndrome). However, these problems are present in only 50% of children with hearing loss; for the others, the cause may be difficult to determine. Parents need to recognise indicators of childhood hearing loss and how they change over time. In the early months, look for startled responses to loud sounds and calm responses to familiar voices. From 6 months, babies turn to familiar sounds, start babbling and understanding simple words. Later, any

motivating a classroom.
The 3 main reasons for these differences:
At the centres or with a home tutor, the students are encouraged to strive for excellence and develop good work habits.
hether your child is 2.5 or 18 years, Dance Creations offers unique dance programs for children, classical ballet, contemporary and Fairy Floss Ballet.
S
tudy Buddy Tutoring is different form other tuition centres because it only offers 1-on-1 tuition and by design their tutors are young adults rather than qualified teachers. They generally focus solely on Maths for all levels from Kindergarten to Year 12.
Comprehensive assessments of students pinpoint exact levels and learning styles.
• Students relate better to peers rather teachers. A Study Buddy is more a mentor or friend pushing your child to their potential.
• Individual attention allows gaps in knowledge to be observed and addressed immediately. Explanations are customised to help improve your child’s understanding.
• Better mental preparation because a lot of tutoring success comes from creating the right frame of mind. One person motivating another is more effective than one person
As a result, a Study Buddy provides honest feedback on a child’s progress and help set realistic goals. To find a Study Buddy for your child, phone or text 0401 315 370.
Terrie Wayside (Creative Director) has an innate ability to nurture, encourage and inspire, resulting in unique and creative ways of relating with the dancers. She has a true love of working with children and is passionate about dance being a holistic experience; it’s not just about the movement, but also how your child is relating, growing in confidence, and being supported in this growth. The Fairy Floss Ballet classes offer a magical space for children aged 2.5 to 5 years to express their creativity through dress-ups, mime, song and music, exploring how your body moves. After a successful launch in 2012, they are now pleased to offer Fairy Floss Ballet classes at Bicton, Leeming, East Victoria Park, Brentwood and Rossmoyne.

Your children are amazing – help them prove it
It’s Young Talent time
N
umberWorks’nWords specialist tuition in maths and English can help your child to improve their confidence and skills in the core subjects, and show just how amazing they really are.
T
he Johnny Young Talent School is known for its ability to develop and encourage self-confidence, and performance technique in young students.
The NumberWorks’nWords learning environment is vibrant and the lessons harness the power of fun. Your child gets specialist tutors in each subject with face to face individualised tuition using purposewritten software to support learning. All aspects of English are covered, including reading, comprehension, spelling, grammar and writing. The maths program covers the Australian curriculum from numbers to problem solving. NumberWorks’nWords caters for students either struggling or bursting to race ahead and parents receive regular progress reports.
All classes are held in a noncompetitive atmosphere of fun, friendship, encouragement and learning. No experience is necessary. NumberWorks’nWords offers an assessment and introductory lesson free, so your child can experience for themselves that it’s so much fun it doesn’t feel like learning. Phone Janice at NumberWorks’nWords Subiaco now on 9388 3727.

Learning at every opportunity
T
he philosophy of Dance Venture is to provide students with a balanced and healthy environment in which to enjoy the pleasures and wonders of learning to dance, to realise dreams, to expand the students’ world through theatre and performance and to create lifelong friendships.
W
hile most Year 6 students see the summer holidays as an opportunity to play and forget about school, Madison spends her free time reading books and loves learning at every opportunity. “Lately I’ve read Pride and Prejudice and that was nice. It had a mixture of irony and comedy and you get to see how different society was then,” Madison said.
Classical Ballet (RAD) is complemented with classes in contemporary and jazz for all levels of student. Individual programmes are available for 1 class per week up to daily classes for the serious student. Over its long history, Dance Venture has provided pathways to the professional dance world for many students. All teachers are fully qualified, experienced experts in their field. They all share one primary aim:
developing the students’ understanding and love of dance.
A Perth local, Madison just finished the Kumon English Programme and can now confidently comment on texts like Pride and Prejudice seen in the final year of high school. “I love learning. I know most kids don’t but I do. I enjoy it because I know I’m growing from it,” she said.
Trial classes are encouraged. Email renate.cumalkovs@bigpond.com or call 0438 844 184 for more information.

fter having an AquaNet installed one customer commented: “This is great! Now my friends can come and play in our garden because the pool is safe and their kids cannot drown!” How true. Australia has undertaken extensive testing of pre-school children in passing over, under or through “safety” fences of varying heights. The average time per test run on a 1.2m fence was just 13 seconds. AquaNet seek not only to prevent one toddler from drowning but all pre-school children, big and small. The AquaNet speaks for itself: No drownings have occurred where it has been installed in South Africa (est. 1972) or Australia (est. 1988). The 100 percent success rate of the safety net gives you a choice, allows you to enjoy your substantial investment in your own home and provides freedom of movement for children in garden and pool areas.
