ll parents want the best for their children, and know how important it is for them to be happy and do well at

Research shows that about 10% of children have Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). The core symptoms of inattentiveness, hyperactivity and impulsivity can have a severe impact on all aspects of life for the child and the whole family. Studies also show that most children with ADHD will continue to experience problems into adulthood. In the past, treatment for ADHD has been limited to medication. Disposing of glass

Transforming ourselves to become conscious parents

Unfortunately, glass deposited into the green-top bins can’t be used to make compost. It not only needs to be taken out and sent to landfill, but some of the glass still remains at the end of the process and contaminates the compost, limiting its use. This glass could more beneficially be utilised if placed in the yellow-top recycling bin. The Mindarie Regional Council and its member councils, supported by the Waste Authority, is promoting ‘no glass in the green top bin’ to encourage residents to make use of their yellow-top recycling bins to dispose

If you have glass items and your recycling bin is full, rather than placing this glass in the general waste bin, please take other action. Talk to your neighbours and see if they have some spare room in their recycling bin, make room in your own bin by crushing cardboard boxes so they take up less room or, if you really have to, remove the cardboard and place that in the green-top bin – because at least the cardboard can be composted. Bottles and jars can be taken to a recycling centre like those at Tamala Park or Balcatta. Large amounts of sheet glass, particularly broken glass from doors, windows and tables should be taken to and disposed of at your local tip or transfer station.

My toddler has recently started to bite other children. How do I deal with it? Julie - Rockingham

Biting is quite common in toddlers aged 18 months to three years old. Your little one is still learning how to express their feelings through words. When they become frustrated and angry, or aren’t able to cope in a situation, biting is another way to get back their favourite toy, tell you that they are unhappy or let another child know that they want to be left alone. Some toddlers will move on from this phase, whilst others grow into serial biters. When your toddler bites, it can be distressing. You feel embarrassed, feel terrible for the other child, and feel angry and frustrated at your own child. It's important to keep those feelings inside and keep calm. Kneel down to your child’s eye level, (avoid using no's or don'ts), explain why they should not bite and that they have hurt their friend. Later, when things have calmed down, help your toddler find a better way to express their feelings. Suggest they ask you for help next time or try using their words. Be aware of situations where your toddler can become irritable enough to bite. Shorten activities and play dates in larger group settings (like playgroup and mothers group) give them an intentional break from play by giving them a hug, and praise good behaviour. You can also offer a drink of water or perhaps a toilet break. Remember, don’t bite back, be consistent in the way you respond to biting and practice your techniques to minimise it.
