Finding out the real reasons with Kip McGrath
Educational goal posts have moved a lot Julia Gilmore (M.Ed.,B.Ed.,Dip.Tch.,TAE)

ll students, no matter how intelligent they are or what grade they are in, need to be able to read, comprehend, write down their ideas effectively and have a strong grasp of the basics in maths. In 2014 all primary and secondary teachers in Australian schools were required to use the National Australian Curriculum, which was based on NSW and Victorian literacy and numeracy levels. This meant that WA students now have two years of work to catch up on in 2014, so it’s no wonder so many students and teachers are struggling. Julia Gilmore and her team of carefully selected teachers, some of whom are also qualified in Speech, Occupational Therapy and Psychology, specialises in working with children from Pre Primary to Year 12, who are not achieving their potential academically. She has many years of experience as a teacher and Deputy Principal in WA schools and knows what each student and parent faces within our education system. It is not surprising that teachers, students and, of course, parents are struggling to raise student levels and need the practical support of an Educational Consultant. Julia provides parent

and teacher training, advice, student assessment, home tuition and help within A1 Learning Academy centres. Highly successful, individualised programs are created for each student, taking into account, study skills, focus and concentration abilities and self-esteem. Home tutors enjoy being strong role models for their students. Centre students enjoy a variety of interesting strategies aimed at building their skills and the rewards program makes hard work and success lots of fun. Lately, after attending teacher meetings, parents are referred to Julia, for assessment, extra maths and/or English tuition, and scholarship and GATE testing preparation. 95% of the students who sit GATE testing are accepted into Perth Modern or other GATE schools.

ammy’s mother was concerned about her daughter’s maths. She couldn’t seem to understand the questions, especially in problem solving. When her mother tried to help her Tammy just became more frustrated and angry. Her daughter’s teacher thought that Tammy should be assessed by the school psychologist, but there was at least a two month waiting list. He then recommended that she go to Kip McGrath for a thorough assessment of her learning needs. Two other students in his class were attending Kip McGrath for maths and he had noticed a real improvement in their skills.
If you suspect that your child is capable, but may be Dyslexic, have ADHD or other learning and concentration difficulties, don’t hesitate to find out how to ensure that they have a positive Primary, Secondary and Tertiary education.
In the initial interview Tammy expressed her frustration in the classroom. “The other kids just get what to do, but I can’t.” It didn’t take us very long to find the problem. Tammy could read well, but understood only half of what she was reading. Her comprehension skills were holding back her maths.

Lots of kids have problems that are more than they seem. At Kip McGrath they
take the time to look deeper to discover the real reason. Staff start by carefully listening to both the child and parents. Both have a story to tell. They then back this up with an extensive range of assessment devices aimed at finding each child’s unique strengths and weaknesses. Only then can staff start to discover the real reasons your child is not succeeding. Tammy’s story ended up much happier. She has improved greatly in her comprehension skills and her mum says she doesn’t have to help her with her maths homework anywhere near as much. You can help your child find the road to success in learning. Check out your local Kip centre at www.kipmcgrath.com.au or call now to book a free assessment.
