ll students, no matter how intelligent they are or what grade they are in, need to be able to read, comprehend, write down their ideas effectively and have a strong grasp of the basics in maths. In 2014 all primary and secondary teachers in Australian schools were required to use the National Australian Curriculum, which was based on NSW and Victorian literacy and numeracy levels. This meant that WA students now have two years of work to catch up on in 2014, so it’s no wonder so many students and teachers are struggling. Julia Gilmore and her team of carefully selected teachers, some of whom are also qualified in Speech, Occupational Therapy and Psychology, specialises in working with children from Pre Primary to Year 12, who are not achieving their potential academically. She has many years of experience as a teacher and Deputy Principal in WA schools and knows what each student and parent faces within our education system. It is not surprising that teachers, students and, of course, parents are struggling to raise student levels and need the practical support of an Educational Consultant. Julia provides parent

Lately, after attending teacher meetings, parents are referred to Julia, for assessment, extra maths and/or English tuition, and scholarship and GATE testing preparation. 95% of the students who sit GATE testing are accepted into Perth Modern or other GATE schools.

When her mother tried to help her Tammy just became more frustrated and angry. Her daughter’s teacher thought that Tammy should be assessed by the school psychologist, but there was at least a two month waiting list. He then recommended that she go to Kip McGrath for a thorough assessment of her learning needs. Two other students in his class were attending Kip McGrath for maths and he had noticed a real improvement in their skills.

IVF: A Risky Business?

ver the past decade IVF has become an increasingly mainstream treatment. This is largely a result of the improved affordability of treatment, resulting from the generous subsidy provided by the Federal Government through the Medicare safety net, coupled with steady improvements in success rates and reductions in both the side effects and complications. Standard IVF treatment protocols involve the deliberate overstimulation of a woman’s ovaries to cause the development of multiple follicles, each one containing an egg. This is done to improve safety by reducing the number of egg pick-up procedures, each of which requires an anaesthetic.

The trade-off is that the over stimulation exposes women to the risk of a disease called ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS). This condition is iatrogenic, meaning an illness caused by a medical treatment, and at its worst is potentially life-threatening. As a result every effort is made to try to minimise the risks this condition poses to women undergoing IVF. Recent years have seen the introduction of a number of advances that have reduced the risk of OHSS, lowering the chance of admission to hospital to about 1% of IVF patients. Blood tests now can more accurately identify women who will react abnormally to stimulation, enabling lower doses with less chance of under stimulation. New drug regimens enable the triggering of ovulation in such a way as to prevent the subsequent production of hormones that cause OHSS. Other advances include a drug treatment that reduces the leakiness of blood vessels that happens when hormone levels reach such heights that they become toxic. This leakiness is responsible for most of the symptoms of OHSS, so the severity of the illness is much reduced.

Another important option for women at risk of OHSS is what is termed a “freeze-all” cycle, where all the embryos are frozen so that the additional hormone rise caused by pregnancy is prevented. This allows the best embryos to be transferred after recovery.

his upcoming July school holidays marks the beginning of Winterland, Perth’s first inner-city outdoor ice skating rink. Held at the James Street Amphitheatre within the Perth Cultural Centre, Winterland will kick-off on Friday July 4 and close on Sunday July 20. Catering for kids, parents, grandparents and everyone in between, Winterland offers a truly unique experience for everyone to enjoy. There will be a range of family friendly sessions and activities on offer each day, with each session beginning on the hour and running for 45 minutes. The first of several fabulous new services includes a children’s health clinic run by registered nurse and midwife Katie. Katie can assist with weighing and measurement of the little ones, as well as advice on breast feeding, nutrition, child safety, settling and sleeping, and much more. The Child Health clinics are operated on Fridays 8.30am-4pm. Bookings are preferable, but not essential.

A breast pump hire service is also available, offering hospital grade equipment from leading brands Medela and Ameda. Katie is also on hand for advice to ensure you achieve the greatest success with continuing breast feeding.
