The advantages of tutoring in small groups By Agnes de Robillard (Kip McGrath Booragoon)
A
major strength of tuition at Kip McGrath Education Centres is the initial free assessment, which provides insight into what areas the child needs to work on and how they learn. After the initial assessment, an individualised programme is written to reflect the specific needs of the child. Students are then tutored individually within a small group setting of four to five students. Nigel Croser, author of the article “Small Groupsâ€?, outlines the advantages of this approach to tutoring: • A shared sense of purpose is contagious. Students work better when others around them are focused, active and proud of what they are achieving. • A key aim of tutoring is to develop independent learners. Students do this more quickly and effectively if they are shown how to do it and then do it on their own. • It is less threatening (and therefore better for learning) for a student to be given space to process new learning without teacher involvement. They still have the security of constant help. • Students move far more confidently from a
small group tutoring setting (4-5 students) to a large school classroom (25-30 students) than from a one-to-one adult/student setting. • In a small group setting, students are encouraged to model each other’s positive behaviours. • Students build self-esteem by being role models for other students in the group. • Students enjoy meeting other students. Friendship is a powerful motivator in a structured, cheerful and carefully monitored learning environment. • Individual attention to your child’s needs is an essential part of the small group setting. (“Small Groupsâ€? by Nigel Croser, Adelaide North, Australia) For further information on in-centre or online tutoring at Kip McGrath and to book your free assessment, visit www.kipmcgrath.com.au or call your nearest centre: Balcatta (9240 2335), Booragoon (9330 4003), Ellenbrook (9297 3654), Gosnells (9490 7822), Jandakot (9414 8088), Joondalup (9301 2334), Mundaring (9295 6255), North Perth (9227 1043), Victoria Park (9472 7480), Willetton (9259 4833).
F
rom the first moment you realise you are pregnant, you want to do everything you can to enhance the current and future health of your unborn baby. At this stage most health care professionals will advise you to undertake first trimester screening to test for any abnormalities. GeneSyte non-invasive prenatal screening is a new way of testing to consider . Competitively priced GeneSyte represents the culmination of Genea’s more than 28 years of experience in reproductive medicine and is the first non-invasive prenatal screening that is completely processed in Australia. Unlike previous methodologies, Genea’s GeneSyte test only requires a simple blood test, making it much safer for you and your baby. GeneSyte works on the principle that when you are pregnant, some of your baby’s DNA crosses the placenta into your bloodstream. Genea testing identifies that DNA in a sample of your blood and checks for conditions that are caused by extra or missing chromosomes. Genea GeneSyte will provide you with clear , concise results on the health of your unborn child. Your results report will identify whether your baby is carrying any of the chromosomal

conditions tested. If the test result indicates that your baby has one of the chromosomal conditions, Genea recommends you consult with your doctor. The doctor may advise you to consider further diagnostic testing (CVS or amniocentesis) to confirm or disprove the result, as recommended by the Royal Australian New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RANZCOG) and the Fetal Medicine Foundation of London. A negative result means that none of these chromosomal conditions have been detected by this test. The guidelines, as mentioned above, recommend that no further invasive testing is required. However, it is important to talk to your doctor about follow-up scans to check for any other fetal anomalies and structural defects. GeneSyte blood collections can now be arranged through Hollywood Fertility Centre, based at Hollywood Private Hospital in P erth. Please ring (08) 9389 4200 to mak e a booking and ask your doctor for a referral (the necessary form is available at www.hollywoodivf.com/doctors-information). You can learn more about GeneSyte by visiting www.genea.com.au

However, not all toothpastes protect children’s teeth equally. Small amounts of fluoride are safe and highly beneficial but excess fluoride causes problems.

Toothpaste packaging lacks fluorosis information and fails to highlight potential complications of high fluoride. For a guide to fluorosis and toothpaste fluoride levels, visit www.dentalcaresystems.com.au New Australian-made children’s toothpastes contain ultra-low / low fluoride to avoid fluorosis. The formulation is superior to that of imported toothpastes. Xylitol removes decaycausing bacteria from dental plaque but if enamel decay starts, the low fluoride repairs the damage before a cavity develops. New vasectomy method available
I
s your family complete? If you’re male, and certain you do not want any more children, there is a perfect solution for you.
Do I have to claim for child support from my ex?
Where going to the dentist is relaxing
Beaumaris Vasectomy Clinic is dedicated to providing men with a simple, quick and affordable means of permanent contraception. Recent advances in medical technique has made vasectomy quicker, safer, more comfortable and with a faster recovery time than ever before. It is now a simple twentyminute procedure under local anaesthetic. This latest method is known as “no-scalpel vasectomy”, and is now available.
D
Couples will no longer need to worry about ongoing contraception, and women can avoid all the long-term risks associated with prolonged hormonal contraceptive use such as increased rates of breast cancer and blood clots. Contact Beaumaris Vasectomy Clinic today on

WA’s first dental spa has arrived
U
nlike your typical dental clinic, WA’s first dental spa, Arca Dental, has the ambiance of a five-star retreat.
ouglas Cheveralls Lawyers are often approached by clients that have concerns about claiming child support and the effect it may have on the relationship with their ex. Most people worry that it may make it harder to coparent the children. Separated parents often have no option but to claim child support. This is because parents need to take reasonable steps to obtain child support if they are to receive more than the base rate of P art A of the Family Tax Benefit (FTB). The process involves applying for a child support assessment. If no application is made, the parent may only be eligible for the base rate of Part A. The more child support received, the less FTB.
The centre accommodates two state of the art dental surgeries and a massage room. Other amenities, like a waiting lounge with free iP ad access and a refreshment area, are also available.
• Your children’s future (with minimal disruption); • Your finances, including the division of property. Ideally, you will experience an amicable separation but you might not.
At Douglas Cheveralls Lawyers, we offer: • Education about the legal process; • A well planned strategic approach; • An emphasis on reaching an amicable resolution and the ability and skill to appear in Court if necessary; • Skilled negotiators, giving focus to a fair resolution whilst upholding your rights.

any studies have found that adjacent home-schooled students on average outperform their public school counterparts on standardised tests.
Agape Centre for Excellence (ACE) offers Chinese classes to everyone from preschoolers to adults (individual, group and parent and child sessions). A qualified and experienced native speaking Chinese teacher conducts the program and the class size is k ept small (maximum eight students) so students have more attention. ACE believes the approach to learning the Chinese language should balance linguistic skills with cultural knowledge.
Students will be individually assessed and provided with materials tailored for their level.
The program is designed to equip students to converse, read and write in Mandarin. They will learn about the Chinese culture,

Adjacent home schooling involves one-onone tutoring that tailors learning to children’s specific educational needs. This style of learning strengthens weaknesses and allows focus on special areas of interest. It also makes kids highly motivated to learn. There are many benefits adjacent home schooling delivers. Home-schooled kids tend to think more independently and are also more unlikely to follow the ideas of a group without first making up their own minds. Schooling children from home also accommodates special needs and prevents children who are hyperactive or not behaving according to the norm, from being unfairly labelled as needing special education. Home schooling also provides a safe learning

very child deserves to fulfil his or her potential at school. They have a right to be happy and well taught within a safe and nurturing environment.
At multiple locations across the Perth metropolitan area, the primary focus of each class is on fun and instilling a love of dance in children from a young age.
If, for whatever reason this does not happen, parents often need professional support from a private, experienced educational specialist. Students at A1 Learning receive assessment and individual tuition programs for English, Mathematics and Science from a team of specialist tutors. Whether they are in Pre Primary or Year 12, positive results are seen immediately. “I can’t believe how much Tom has improved and he is so much happier at school now. His last report and NAPLAN results were excellent.” - Michael Dennings.
Each class follows a carefully developed syllabus, with learning objectives that have been designed specifically for each individual age group.

Staff at International Centre for Excellence help hundreds of children each year who cannot read fluently, do not know their tables and struggle to write a decent sentence. These children desperately need help. If they don’t receive intensive, specialised learning assistance, self-esteem suffers and standards fall even lower. Victoria Carlton’s literacy and numeracy programs have helped tens of thousands of children to enjoy learning and improve their standards. She believes learning must be explicit, systematic, enhance creativity and nurture self-esteem. Call her friendly team today to book some
