The advantages of tutoring in small groups By Agnes de Robillard (Kip McGrath Booragoon)

A

major strength of tuition at Kip McGrath Education Centres is the initial free assessment, which provides insight into what areas the child needs to work on and how they learn. After the initial assessment, an individualised programme is written to reflect the specific needs of the child. Students are then tutored individually within a small group setting of four to five students. Nigel Croser, author of the article “Small Groupsâ€?, outlines the advantages of this approach to tutoring: • A shared sense of purpose is contagious. Students work better when others around them are focused, active and proud of what they are achieving. • A key aim of tutoring is to develop independent learners. Students do this more quickly and effectively if they are shown how to do it and then do it on their own. • It is less threatening (and therefore better for learning) for a student to be given space to process new learning without teacher involvement. They still have the security of constant help. • Students move far more confidently from a

small group tutoring setting (4-5 students) to a large school classroom (25-30 students) than from a one-to-one adult/student setting. • In a small group setting, students are encouraged to model each other’s positive behaviours. • Students build self-esteem by being role models for other students in the group. • Students enjoy meeting other students. Friendship is a powerful motivator in a structured, cheerful and carefully monitored learning environment. • Individual attention to your child’s needs is an essential part of the small group setting. rom the first moment you realise you are pregnant, you want to do everything you can to enhance the current and future health of your unborn baby. At this stage most health care professionals will advise you to undertake first trimester screening to test for any abnormalities. GeneSyte non-invasive prenatal screening is a new way of testing to consider . Competitively priced GeneSyte represents the culmination of Genea’s more than 28 years of experience in reproductive medicine and is the first non-invasive prenatal screening that is completely processed in Australia. Unlike previous methodologies, Genea’s GeneSyte test only requires a simple blood test, making it much safer for you and your baby. GeneSyte works on the principle that when you are pregnant, some of your baby’s DNA crosses the placenta into your bloodstream. Genea testing identifies that DNA in a sample of your blood and checks for conditions that are caused by extra or missing chromosomes. Genea GeneSyte will provide you with clear , concise results on the health of your unborn child. Your results report will identify whether your baby is carrying any of the chromosomal

conditions tested. If the test result indicates that your baby has one of the chromosomal conditions, Genea recommends you consult with your doctor. The doctor may advise you to consider further diagnostic testing (CVS or amniocentesis) to confirm or disprove the result, as recommended by the Royal Australian New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RANZCOG) and the Fetal Medicine Foundation of London. A negative result means that none of these chromosomal conditions have been detected by this test. The guidelines, as mentioned above, recommend that no further invasive testing is required. However, it is important to talk to your doctor about follow-up scans to check for any other fetal anomalies and structural defects. GeneSyte blood collections can now be arranged through Hollywood Fertility Centre, based at Hollywood Private Hospital in P erth. Please ring (08) 9389 4200 to mak e a booking and ask your doctor for a referral (the necessary form is available at www.hollywoodivf.com/doctors-information).
