oin Kumon’s free trial and have your child experience Kumon, a unique method of learning with over 4.2 million students worldwide. Students like Alicia have already seen benefits from trying a free trial at Kumon. “Her free trial experience was great,” Alicia’s mum, Megan, said. “I wanted her to start early and the free trial just got her in so she could start the programme. Now she goes in to the centre, picks up her booklet and she just does her work happily.” Alicia, now in Year 1, is already learning maths concepts ahead of her grade level. “ After the first day of school, the teacher said to me that Alicia is fantastic at calculating maths,” Megan said. “My children are just lik e any other child but it just goes to show you, when you put in the effort, there are rewards.” During the free trial, students will have the chance to learn through the Kumon Maths or English Programme and attend a Kumon Education Centre for four class days. At Kumon, students begin study at a level that allows them to build confidence from day one. Students progress through the programmes based on their ability rather than their age, developing discipline, time
management skills and essential study habits. Over time, students are able to study advanced material confidently and independently, overcoming challenges by themselves rather than becoming accustomed to one-on-one teaching. Kumon Maths develops strong calculation skills and focuses on core topics, from counting to calculus. The programme cultivates analytical skills and logical thinking abilities. The English Programme fosters an enjoyment of reading and begins by enriching each student’s vocabulary and developing basic reading skills. Students build their understanding of sentence structure, paragraph building and summarisation. Designed to support younger students, Kumon’s Pencil Skills Programme introduces children to the world of numbers and words through colourful worksheets. Through all Kumon programmes, students acquire a daily learning habit and build confidence to tackle future challenges.
Creating confidence in the classroom By Hayley Ryan – KMEC North Perth
I
f your child is becoming disillusioned with school, struggling to learn and reluctant to complete homework, it may be time to get them some extra help. Y our child’s confidence and relationship with their education is too important to k eep waiting for them to improve on their own. At Kip McGrath Education Centres, the first step in our free assessment is to meet the child and chat with them on their thoughts and feelings about school. Following this, we provide a comprehensive assessment of their literacy and numeracy skills. We use these results to set goals and to plan a program to develop core skills, regain confidence and, most importantly, discover a love of learning.
Contact your local Kumon Education Centre to register for the free trial before 8 August. T&Cs apply.
Kip McGrath not only caters for children who are struggling, but can also extend those students who are bored with school work that is too easy. We offer extension for gifted students and exam preparation for seniors. Preparation for NAPLAN and OLNA is also available.

Online tutoring is now available in many centres for those who find it difficult to get
to a centre. All you need is an Internet connection with adequate speed. It is never too late or too early to seek our help if you feel your child is losing confidence and becoming disheartened. All Kip McGrath tutors are qualified and experienced teachers who understand how to break down key literacy and numeracy concepts and create a pathway to success. Kip McGrath has 40 years of proven success in doing so. Piano lessons even improve maths skills. Because music and maths are so intertwined, children discover division and multiplication as they experience different rhythms in music. McGill University in Montreal, Canada found that grade school students that studied piano for three years scored higher than their peers on tests to do with their general and spatial cognitive areas.

The times tables of doom
B
efore now, learning times tables was a drag. Repetitive. Boring.
Back to school – for parents!
But now NumberWorks’nWords has brought to life a new character, Steve Storm, to change all that.
P
arents need to understand exactly what students need to succeed at school.
For kids, playing Steve Storm and the Tables of Doom is engaging, stimulating fun. It doesn’t feel like learning at all. For parents, it’s a way of ensuring their children are getting the best educational outcomes with enthusiasm.
The International Centre for Excellence is offering two seminars to help parents discover ways to maximise academic progress for their children. These seminars will be practical, handson, games oriented and supported, with full notes to ensure you will remember all the important information. Supportive games and resources will be available for you to see and play with. The numbers are restricted at these practical and intensive seminars and you will be asked to pay in full with a credit card when enrolling. The cost is $50 per participant for each seminar and $80 if both
parents attend. Supper is provided. Dates and times: Literacy seminar (Grades K-6) Wednesday 3 August, 7-9pm. Maths seminar (Grades K-6) Wednesday 10 August, 7-9pm. Please call ICE on 9271 4200 to book your place ASAP.

Montessori coming soon to Joondalup
I
nspired by a passion for the Montessori method of early childhood education and a need to find a quality preschool for their daughter, Anita and David Endersby opened the first Montessori Childcare in the lower northern suburbs of Perth in 2008. With dedication, and a loyal team behind them, it became a highly sought-after educational program with a long waitlist.
The school’s philosophy is to provide a nurturing and gentle introduction to classical ballet. All ballet lessons are taught by professional, educated teachers and are carefully planned to inspire through beautiful music and movement and to cultivate a love for the art form. Charlesworth Ballet School classes start from Pre-primary grade and are available throughout the metropolitan area. Term three commences from Monday 18 July. Enrolments are now being taken. **Special Offer - The first ten readers to mention Kids in Perth - The Parents’ Paper will receive 25% off their Term 3 fees (for new enrolments only).**
Rest assured, this fantastic game will help your child learn their multiplication tables. After all, Steve Storm and the Tables of Doom was developed by the maths tuition experts at NumberWorks’nWords, and based on the company’s 30 years of success in transforming children’s relationships with learning.

new project.
2015 was time to hand the reigns over to a new owner, while Anita and David enjoyed a well-earned rest. Now, with batteries recharged, their goal is to deliver what was requested by so many parents - a Montessori Early Childhood Development Centre in the north.
“It takes a lot of energy and time to get these things started and it has always been important that we come from a base of passion about what we are doing,” Anita said. “It has to be for the right reasons I think otherwise it is just another business. Children in the Montessori environment learn valuable life skills that are often forgotten in our hectic lives, but we also need to remember the changing needs of the millennium child.”
Anita’s personal belief in the Montessori approach for developing confident young learners is evident in her enthusiasm for this

Guildford Grammar School Tour for K-12
Come and discover the opportunities available for your sons and daughters at Guildford Grammar School. Register for
Teaching the teachers M
any teachers are under unbelievably high stress loads as they struggle to teach students synthetic phonics and grammar. The simple reason for this is that many teachers were not taught basic phonics and grammar and so need a great deal of support to deliver these essential programs. Others may have been taught the rudiments of phonics or grammar but it was so long ago and they have forgotten. Research demonstrates that quality professional development (PD) is of paramount importance for effective schools. Teachers need to access PD that will suit their needs and can be individualised for specific school requirements. Informed and up to date teachers are the crucial link to achieve both effective teaching and high academic outcomes. Victoria Carlton, the Director of International Centre for Excellence, delivers quality Professional Development that ensures teachers get the information and
practical strategies they need to address these needs. The workshops that are offered include exciting and effective training for SYNTHETIC PHONICS, GRAMMAR, READING, WRITING and the STAR Program for those students who are at risk of falling through the “educational cracks”.
service to help them utilise these methods and trouble shoot in specific areas. Many schools are accessing this service to ensure a consistent approach across all year levels and to ensure their teachers receive the necessary backup to ensure the methods are effectively used in the classroom.
Victoria also offers intensive training, handbooks and workbooks for her wellresearched emotional intelligence program EQ4KIDZ - so that schools can effectively improve the emotional intelligence of students, teachers and non-teaching staff.
These courses can be run at Victoria’s centre in Bayswater or in-school, and the options include whole day, half day, after school or Saturday sessions.
During these high-energy and engaging sessions Victoria shares her passion, humour and gives generously from her online resources. The aim is always to help teachers provide the best quality programs for children. The strategies presented are evidence based, engaging and enjoyable with plenty of opportunities for questions and “hands-on” to help teachers full understand. Schools are also offered a consultation
Victoria Carlton is committed to quality training that has been trialled with children and will only present strategies that work within a classroom environment. She knows that schools have to cater for many different learning styles and so she provides a real menu of strategies to ensure ALL children learn to their optimum potential. Her mantra is THOU SHALT NOT BORE YOUR AUDIENCE! so she seeks to engage and enthuse. She is always happy to speak to individual teachers, Principals or learning area coordinators to ensure that
teachers’ needs and expectations are met and exceeded! Because Victoria works with children of all ages on a daily basis, she is very aware of the real problems that teachers meet and does not gloss over practical details! She often posts ideas on face-book and has many youtube videos to demonstrate the process in action. For more information, please call the International Centre for Excellence on 08 9271 4200 to arrange PD with Victoria and her team.
