Face your waste – say ‘no’ to single-use plastic
O
Although single-use plastic does not form a significant quantity of the waste stream, due to its light weight, its inability to break down makes it a huge problem for littering and marine pollution. Also, the energy and resources that go into producing materials that we use and then discard is just irresponsible. Very little of this type of plastic is recycled and, unfortunately, much of it is disposed of poorly. It’s estimated that worldwide, 8 million tonnes of plastic, the equivalent of one rubbish-truckload per minute, is dumped into our oceans. There are chemicals in some plastics that have been associated with harmful health effects to humans and the damage ingested

plastics are making on our marine birds and other animals is now a worldwide problem. To quote from the movie Bag It, explains it well: ‘Think about it. Why would you make something that you’re going to use for a few minutes out of a material that’s basically going to last forever – and you’re just going to throw it away. What’s up with that?’ The reduction of single-use plastics also makes for a thought-provoking and topical conversation topic at home or work. Did you know that single-use plastic shopping bags are also being banned in WA from 1 July?

oodstart Early Learning has launched more flexible options to help families make the most of the new Child Care Subsidy. New nine and 10 hour sessions, in addition to the ‘all day’ session, will help reduce the risk of families running out of subsided eligible hours and paying full fees. Goodstart understands that every family is different and not everyone needs 12 hours of child care a day, which is why parents can choose between the shorter nine or 10-hour sessions and the longer ‘all day’ session already offered at Goodstart Centres.
• Kids birthday parties • Shopping centre, corporate bookings & school talks
‘By providing more flexibility, we’re hoping to help better meet the needs of our families and support them to get the most out of the new subsidy that started on 2 July,’ said Centre Director, Alison Burnett.

limbing is a fantastic sport for children’s physical and mental health – and is one of the only forms of exercise that uses every muscle in the body, including the brain. Climbing a wall helps develop great coordination, focus and concentration in children. Finding a route on the climbing wall is like solving a puzzle – and making it to the top gives kids a great sense of accomplishment.
