Australia competes in the international Abacus Math Championship

S

EMAS is happy to announce that 16 of their students from Australia have been invited to compete against 14 other countries at the International Abacus and Mental Arithmetic Championship in Singapore this year. This is a great achievement for SEMAS and their students they will do Australia proud.

But it’s more than just math; the program improves a wide range of skills that are needed in many areas of life and learning. These include comprehension, concentration, listening, creativity and problem solving.

SEMAS is a program designed to develop the right side of the brain using the abacus as a tool. Something so unique, it will change the way you and your children feel about mathematics.

They have centres all across Perth, including Currambine, Landsdale, Woodvale, Girrawheen, Rivervale, Vic Park, South Perth, Canning Vale and Bayswater.

Their aim is to accomplish whole brain development - it’s much more than a mathematics course. The SEMAS classroom includes learners as young as three years old. SEMAS develops fast mental calculations and also improves creativity, memorisation and intuitive thinking. Students are able to draw upon the right-brain, which increases speed and accuracy. To do this, students learn how to visualise the abacus in their memory, which is why calculations can be made so quickly.

PRICELESS

Ultimately, SEMAS fosters a love of mathematics in children and boosts selfconfidence.

Call them today for your free trial or have a look at what they do at their National Championship at the South Perth community Hall on 25 June 2016 from 10am-11am. You will be able to see just how beneficial this program can be for your child.

aring for society’s most vulnerable is more than just a business. Especially for TR7 Training Director, Shane Anderson who has dedicated to providing quality care for society’s most vulnerable. After watching his elderly mother go through her final days with insufficient medical care and a lack of empathy, Shane became determined to improve the way that health professionals and carers treat the people who need them most. At the time, he had just established a training company but after his mother’s passing, the business had become his mission. Vulnerable people, including the aged, deserved the best possible care and Shane was going to make sure they got it by training carers to be the best they could be, providing a human touch at every opportunity.

They also have franchise opportunities across Australia.

Now TR7 Training Services is a group of people coming together with a shared vision to achieve their dreams in a supportive and encouraging environment. They want to make a

difference in the world community. He also made a commitment to his students; if they did their best and were found to be competent, they would get jobs. One of the great advantages students have at TR7 is that the face-to-face attendance in the training rooms is parttime. Another is that there are flexible work hours open to carers once a student has qualified and received their certificate III in aged care, disability or one of the other courses available. In many health industry sectors there is a chronic shortage of staff. Students from TR7 have an immediate employment rate of between 95 and 100 percent. They are truly needed. All of their graduates have been through a thorough, engaging and compelling course that allows them insight and purpose whilst allowing time for the other things in their lives. new project.

2015 was time to hand the reigns over to a new owner, while Anita and David enjoyed a well-earned rest. Now, with batteries recharged, their goal is to deliver what was requested by so many parents - a Montessori Early Childhood Development Centre in the north.

“It takes a lot of energy and time to get these things started and it has always been important that we come from a base of passion about what we are doing,” Anita said. “It has to be for the right reasons I think otherwise it is just another business. Children in the Montessori environment learn valuable life skills that are often forgotten in our hectic lives, but we also need to remember the changing needs of the millennium child.”

Anita’s personal belief in the Montessori approach for developing confident young learners is evident in her enthusiasm for this

orthshore Christian Grammar School will open in Alkimos in 2017, as the newest campus of the Swan Christian Education Association (SCEA).

1 on 1 tutoring

Drawing on SCEA’s resources and 30 years of experience operating successful Christian schools in WA, Northshore will offer a second-tonone learning experience in Perth’s northern suburbs. “I am excited to be given the opportunity to establish and grow this school, alongside the families of Alkimos, said Mr. Stuart Chisholm, Principal of Northshore Christian Grammar School.

“Northshore will embrace the culture of the area, helping to shape a bright and positive future for our children and the wider community.

Victoria Carlton Early Learners Programs LAS/NOV14

Construction has commenced and the

This research based approach international program is now available in Perth. Book your child into intensive, multisensory, learning sessions that will stimulate their inherent intelligence and help them become creative, flexible thinkers. These programs stimulate children’s natural curiosity and help them become “schoolready and excited and receptive towards future learning opportunities.

school will open for Term 1, 2017, with classes from Kindergarten to Year 6. It will then grow year-on-year to become a full Kindergarten to Year 12 school. Visit www.northshore.wa.edu.au for enrolment information and to see more about the new campus.

Effective, engaging and enjoyable pre-school program

E

arly learners benefit hugely from the Victoria Carlton approach, which encourages high educational standards as well as thinking skills and creativity.

These Programs also integrate the Multiple Intelligence research from Howard Gardner at Harvard University. Victoria also trains teachers in schools to use these programs, which cover pre-school, primary and early secondary level.

Children learn to read, write, spell and understand maths skills and parents receive written feedback on the program and their child’s progress. Victoria’s licensees are taught to use a series of exercises that improve brain integration and mind-body interaction. These are essential skills that need to be developed for maximum learning to take place.

In Perth, the Victoria Carlton programs are available in Bayswater (ICE) and also in Cockburn Central (Agape). Programs run during school terms and also during school holidays. For information and bookings contact ICE at 9271 4200 or Agape at 9414 7191.

How Montessori influences Test Scores and NAPLAN

Tuition with a twist

M

any parents will soon receive their children’s first 2016 report cards and, later on, their NAPLAN results. So it’s timely to explore whether Montessori children perform better.

A

ll children have their own learning styles, so the teachers at the International Centre for Excellence (ICE) in Bayswater tailor teaching approaches to each student. Victoria Carlton Literacy and Numeracy programs allow flexibility in delivery and pace so that all children can understand. They also allow children to revise, consolidate and, in some cases, accelerate through the program.

If success is judged by test scores or test taking ability, Montessori children generally score as well as, or slightly better than, children from conventional schooling. However, if success is measured by the lifelong skills of being independent, sociable and having creativity of thought, then enrolling into Montessori is something worth considering and investing in for your child’s long-term success.

Students work in small groups so they have an opportunity to collaborate and ask questions but, in essence, every child at ICE has their own individualised learning program.

“Learning should never be boring,” said Victoria Carlton. “Even when we teach times tables and spelling, our teachers select interesting, multi-sensory methods to stimulate brains and create enjoyment.” Parents are listened to at ICE so that educators can deliver programs that work for each child.

Within Montessori’s mixed-age classrooms, qualified educators encourage independent learning, build a comprehensive understanding of concepts and use teaching materials that engage all senses.

Call ICE on 9271 4200 or visit www.ice-au.com to find out about their effective and engaging educational programs.

A Montessori day is structured so that a child’s focus is not interrupted. Children only move onto their next lesson after completing the current one. This builds a child’s sense of purpose and concentration.

When the brain does not hear what the ear hears

D

oes your child need you to repeat things? Or perhaps they don’t seem to understand what you or the teacher is saying.

Ideally, it’s best to start children early in Montessori, from 1 year old, to familiarise them with the classroom environment and to help them learn these life skills and habits.

Crescent Early Enrichment Centre

If your child acts frustrated or tends to be in their own world, they might suffer from poor auditory processing. The Tomatis® Method works in re-patterning the connections of the ear, brain and body and helps with auditory processing, attention and reconnecting with oneself and one’s environment. It’s a powerful instrument helping thousands of children and adults with behavioural, learning and communication difficulties.

Thurs 16th - Fri 17th June 2016

The life skills taught at Montessori ultimately benefits children’s academic scores throughout schooling and, eventually, at university and in the workplace, where they have to work independently without distraction.

Get warm, not burnt this winter

A

s the weather cools down the risks of children getting burnt or scalded increase. Each year approximately 500 children present to Princess Margaret Hospital Emergency Department for a burn or scald injury and currently the most common cause of a burn or a scald is from hot food and drinks. Burns and scalds can easily be prevented: • Control the delivery temperature of bathroom hot tap water to a maximum of 50°C. A simple tempering device can be installed by a licensed plumber. • Supervise young children in the bathroom and the kitchen • Keep kettles, pots, pans and microwaves at the back of the bench • Put your child down before having a hot drink
