ADHD affects boys and girls differently
A
bout 10% of children have Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and it can affect boys and girls differently. Boys with ADHD are more likely to be hyperactive, whilst girls with ADHD tend to be more inattentive and can be overlooked. New research shows that ADHD also has a bigger effect on girls, both in the short-term at school, and in the long-term with respect to employment opportunities. Girls also tend to cope less well and are more prone to anxiety and depression. In the past, treatment for ADHD has been limited to medication. However, now it is generally accepted that the most effective treatment for ADHD should be ‘patientcentred’ and involve a range of interventions. Treatments that have been proven to be effective include behavioural therapy, psychoeducation, lifestyle and diet changes and Neurofeedback Therapy (brainwave training). There is no ‘one-size fits all approach’ and families should be able to make an informed choice based upon the range of treatments now available. The Perth Brain Centre focuses primarily on providing Neurofeedback Therapy in

conjunction with behavioural interventions, psycho-education, lifestyle and dietary advice. Neurofeedback is recognised by The American Academy of Paediatrics to be an effective treatment for ADHD and is featured in Dr Norman Doidge’s book The Brain’s Way of Healing, the sequel to his international best-selling book The Brain That Changes Itself. Neurofeedback is a brain-based treatment that uses a sophisticated brain-computer interface to ‘strengthen’ or retrain the brain. At The Perth Brain Centre, a special scan, called a QEEG is used to pin-point the problem areas within the brain and permits targeted and individualised training. The Perth Brain Centre has been helping children with ADHD and their families for 10 years. Neurofeedback is suitable for people of almost all ages and can also be helpful for other conditions such as anxiety, depression, headaches and migraines. Getting successful treatment for ADHD can change your child’s life. For further information, phone 6500 3277 or visit www.perthbraincentre.com.au

hile slogans like ‘no pain, no gain’ and ‘genius is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration’ have some merit, there’s a danger that plain old fun has been sent straight to the frivolous bin. And that’s a problem, because fun is every child’s friend when it comes to learning. Research says fun is essential. There’s plenty of evidence from medical and educational researchers that says fun is a key ingredient for learning. A Washington Post article cited brain research that suggests ‘fun is not just beneficial to learning but, by many reports, required for authentic learning and long-term memory’. In a book about research-based strategies to ignite education, neurologist and educator Judy Willis said ‘the human brain and body respond positively to laughter with the release of endorphin, epinephrine (adrenaline), and dopamine, and with increased breathing volume (more oxygen)’. It’s even more important outside of school. The research is probably just validating what most teachers and parents today already know. Kids engage more and learn more when they’re doing things that are fun. So
it’s particularly important that learning beyond school, such as after-school tuition, is enjoyable. Not only does it enable genuine learning, it also ensures your child doesn’t have to be dragged kicking and screaming to tuition. Even your conversation on the journey to the tuition centre should focus on what makes it fun, rather than reminders of under-achievement areas you’d like to see improving. NumberWorks’nWords tuition programs are designed to be both effective and enjoyable. It’s a blend that’s been fine-tuned for over thirty years. Children are rewarded with games during their lesson – and the feeling of continually getting better at learning simply adds to their enjoyment. Tutors are skilled at maintaining positive interactions with each student and building their confidence.

t’s seems the phrase ‘happy campers’ might be truer than we realise – with a new study revealing that people who camp are happy or, at least, happier than those who don’t go camping.
So, it’s true! Happy campers really are happier than non-campers. Time to get back to nature!
The Caravan Industry Association of Australia’s study was conducted to better understand the emotional and social benefits of camping and the value it provides for current and future generations of travellers.

The take home message is that camping allows us to reconnect with loved ones in a relaxed environment, free from modern distractions. Which is why 7.1 million Australians have gone on a caravanning or camping holiday in the last two years. And why 79% of all Australians are planning a camping in the next two years.

that camping was a popular way to undergo a ‘digital detox’ and reconnect with family, nature or oneself. The perceived benefits for children were also significant, with study respondents adding that it teaches kids many important life skills and allows them to build strong bonds with their family.
with Dolly Bhargava
While most children, with guidance, learn the key skills for managing their emotions and behaviours, some consistently struggle. Eventually, they act out in such challenging ways that dealing with them on the daily basis can be enormously draining for parents. This sort of behaviour can make the rest of the family feel like they are walking on eggshells, not knowing when they could set off another outburst. As tensions increase, relationships begin to strain and your family is restricted in what they are able to do. Over time, people start to question their parenting skills and worry takes over, snowballing into feelings of inadequacy, failure and guilt. If any of this sounds familiar, then you have come to the right place. My name is Dolly Bhargava and I am a speech pathologist with a Masters in Special Education. I have over seventeen years personal and practical experience working with children with emotional and behavioural difficulties. Each month I will be answering your questions, sharing practical and positive behaviour solutions that have been used by the many parents I have supported over the years who have walked this road. I believe through your patience, perseverance, persistence and, above all, love, you can make positive differences in your child’s behaviour.

Imagine your child is happily playing with his favourite toy. Suddenly, another child comes over and snatches the toy. Your child screams ‘No!’, pushes the other child and forcibly takes the toy back. You’re frustrated because you’ve told them a million and one times that if someone does something they don’t like, instead of screaming or pushing, they need to simply say, ‘Stop! I don’t like that!’ And if the other person doesn’t listen, to come and find you. What makes the situation worse is that your child appears to understand what you’re saying and can even repeat the rules back to you. So when they don’t follow your instructions, you ask them the million-dollar question – why? And your child’s answer is, of course – I don’t know. The difficulty in following this instruction may be attributed to a lack of emotional regulation skills, a series of controls or strategies that allow us to cope with the emotions we experience during a particular situation. When someone upsets us, they help us manage stress, frustration and anger so that we can respond appropriately. Without these key skills, accomplishing any task is difficult. Emotional regulation is a skill that needs to be learned – and some children benefit from emotional coaching. Emotional coaching involves helping your child recognise their emotions, identifying what made them experience the emotion and the various tools they can use to manage their emotions effectively. My book Take CHARGE of My Rainbow of Emotions provides step-by-step guidance on each of these steps. The first step is to help your child put together a ‘rainbow’ of emotions. Through this activity they learn how to recognise and identify which emotion they are experiencing.
Next, it’s time to discover our ‘CHARGE toolbelt’, which helps us manage these emotions. CHARGE stands for – Chat, Helpful Thinking, Amusement Tools, Relaxation Tools, Good Routine and Exercise. CHAT TOOLS are about helping children learn how to express themselves assertively in a challenging situation. E.g. ‘I had the swing first, I will give it to you when I have finished,’ or ‘You can have this shovel, I am using this one’. HELPFUL THINKING TOOLS help children learn how to think about the consequences of their actions and make a good choice. E.g. What will happen to me if I take someone’s toy truck forcibly? AMUSEMENT TOOLS help children learn fun ways of coping with boredom or disappointment. E.g. ‘If they don’t want to play with me, I can play on the swings, the slippery slide or seesaw by myself’. RELAXATION TOOLS help them learn how calm down and think rationally – like taking five deep breaths, counting to 10 or having a drink of water. GOOD ROUTINE TOOLS create a sense of structure, predictability, security and balance. Letting your child know how long they have in the playground and providing them with a countdown is one such example. EXERCISE TOOLS are there to reduce stress, anger and frustration by burning off excess energy and releasing feel-good hormones to improve children’s mood. For more information on how to help your child develop these key skills, pick up a copy of Taking CHARGE of my Rainbow of Emotions. I am also running a range of practical and interactive workshops related to emotional regulation skills. Please visit www.dollybhargava.com for more information.

If you’re considering a switch, there’s no time like the present. When properly informed about how and why the Montessori method works, children adapt very well to this new style of learning. Montessori develops children holistically and sets them on a path to lifelong learning. Schooling is characterised by mixed-age classrooms, each having a three year to four year age bracket, starting from 3 to 6 years, 6 to 9 years and so on. At every age bracket, specific aspects of child development are reinforced through the curriculum. These range from providing
children with an in-depth understanding of the concepts they are learning (rather than relying purely on memory) through to accentuating self-reliance and managing social dynamics (helpful for when they have to work both autonomously and as part of a team). It’s never too late to start the Montessori way of learning. Find out more by booking an appointment at one of their listed Montessori playgroups, childcare or schools located on the opposite page.

WA SchoolS FeAture Make reading aloud count
R
eading to your child lays a solid foundation for their future learning. Reading aloud to them for just 20 minutes each day is all you need to increase their capacity for language and literacy skills. Here’s what you should be practicing in those 20 minutes: Matching – When we read, part of what we do involves matching. Children learn to match shapes, patterns, letters and, finally, words. Rhyming – Research shows that children who can understand about rhyming words have a head start in learning to read and to spell. Letter recognition – As well as recognising letter shapes, learning the most common sounds that each letter makes gives children a head start. Motor skills – Practicing writing letters and words as they learn to read them will help kids with comprehension and encourage
good pencil grip and control. Concepts of print and direction – This is all about knowing how to handle books; holding them the right way up, turning the pages in sequence, exploring the pictures, reading print from left to right and knowing that the words can be read to tell a story. Take 20 minutes to read aloud to your child today. It will not only set them on a path of learning but will give you time together to explore the joy that books can bring. You will cherish those moments as much as they do. We'd like to introduce Filomena. She's our friend, a real person with real problems, and a mother to 5 fantastic children ranging in ages from 3 to 18.

How do I teach my two-year-old to share when we have play dates at home? Violet - Beeliar
We’ve all been there, watching as our two-year-olds clutch for dear life onto a prized possession – or even something they’ve never taken much of an interest in until another child wants that very same thing. You’re annoyed at your child and probably a little embarrassed as you find yourself bargaining with them or bribing them (or downright threatening them) to share with their friend. A two-year-old’s view of the world is that they get to keep their own things to themselves. They’re beginning tounderstand the

Sharing is a learned activity, and mastering it takes time. But adding certain activities to your child’s routine will help them learn. You could try taking turns flipping the pages of a book at bedtime. If they insist that they want your turn, teach them that you are both sharing and that it is your turn now. Ask if you can hold their favourite teddy and say ‘thank you for sharing your teddy with me’. You can share lunch from time to time or interrupt their play to ask if you can join in and take turns. Plan play dates carefully, considering the time of day and the length of play. Try putting your child's favourite things out of sight, as this reduces the chances of serious conflict. Remind them to share before they arrive by saying things like, ‘isn’t it exciting to have your friend over to play and share your toys?’ Try not to play in one setting the entire time – change the scene by playing outside or break-up the time by having a snack. Remember that play dates are important at this age as it allows children to practice sharing. Your toddler is not selfish or naughty, just learning how to be generous towards others.
