Inside Out Occupational Therapy Group is excited to announce their new service – OT Check Ups for children in Kindergarten, Pre-Primary or Year 1. These relaxed 40-minute consults are a great opportunity to have your child’s development assessed by a qualified occupational therapist. Fine and gross motor, visual and auditory, written or pre-writing, attention, sensory, behaviour and emotional skills are all screened during this session and parents are provided with a report at the completion of the screen – including advice on ‘where to from here’. If your child requires further support, this will be discussed with you and onward referral will be facilitated. OT Check Ups provide peace of mind to parents and also serve as an excellent way to support your child’s progress over time. Check ups are offered at Manning, Mosman Park and Murdoch (St John of God) clinics,

bout 1% of children in Australia have Autism. Like all children, every child with Autism is unique. However, there are usually core symptoms characterised by differences in behaviour, social interaction, communication and sensory processing. People with Autism often experience additional challenges and problems like ADHD, anxiety and depression are particularly common. Whilst there is currently no single known cause of Autism, it is generally accepted to be caused by abnormalities in the structure and function of the brain. The diagnosis of Autism is an important step forwards because this can offer access to extra support at school and government funding for services. Autism should be diagnosed by a developmental paediatrician, psychiatrist or a psychologist who is qualified in assessing people with Autism. Treatment for Autism typically involves a coordinated approach from a range of healthcare professions such as paediatricians, psychiatrists, psychologists, occupational therapists and speech therapists. Research shows that the earlier a child starts treatment the better the results. Scientists think that this is

because young brains are more ‘plastic’ and can change more easily – a term described as ‘neuroplasticity.’ The Perth Brain Centre has been helping people with Autism for over 10 years. Everyone with Autism is different and there is no standard one-size-fits-all approach. Special scans called QEEG help to pinpoint the areas in the brain that may not be working normally, and this information is used to target treatment. Treatment often includes Neurofeedback Therapy, a type of targeted brain training that uses a sophisticated brain-computer interface to ‘strengthen’ or retrain the brain. Neurofeedback Therapy is most widely recognised as a drug-free treatment for ADHD, however, research also shows that it can be helpful for some people with Autism. Evidence specifically indicates that Neurofeedback Therapy can produce long-term improvements in attention, emotional regulation and social behaviour. If you would like more information about how brain-based therapies can help people with Autism, please contact the clinic on 6500 3277 or visit perthbraincentre.com.au

Play-based learning keeps it fun

S

ome parents feel that three year’s old is too early for children to be in kindergarten. But when you consider the natural desire of young children to learn, explore and play, the play-based learning curriculum in Goodstart Early Learning centres is a perfect match. The best part is, it’s fun!

LAS/JUNE18

Christie Eaton, from Goodstart Early Learning Merriwa, explained why play-based learning helps three-year-olds form positive feelings towards learning:

Button batteries – the hidden danger

A

round our homes there is a littleknown danger to children. Powerful coin-sized batteries, known as button batteries, are found in a number of household items and products. Devices that commonly contain button batteries include remote controls, watches, singing greeting cards, novelty items, hearing aids and toys. When swallowed, a button battery can become lodged in the child’s oesophagus due to its small size. A chemical reaction can occur with the saliva and the battery, which can cause severe burns and tissue damage within two hours of ingestion. Button battery ingestions can have serious complications, often requiring multiple surgeries. In severe cases, they can result in death. Diagnosis can be difficult, as the symptoms of swallowing a button battery can be similar to other childhood illnesses. If you suspect your child has swallowed a button battery, take them to the emergency department immediately. To prevent children from accessing button batteries: • Identify items around your home that may

contain button batteries • Ensure battery compartments are secure • Place all devices that contain button batteries out of reach and out of sight of children • Dispose of batteries safely at a battery recycling collection point – contact your local council for locations Kidsafe WA works in the community to educate and inform parents and children on staying safe at home, at play and on the road. No alcohol is the safest choice

“over 20 years experience in the entertainment industry”

F

etal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) occurs in all communities. In Australia, nearly 50% of pregnancies are unplanned and over 80% of women consume alcohol. Therefore, a pregnancy might be exposed to alcohol because the mother did not know that she was pregnant.

Australia’s leading model & talent agency for kids Having discovered and developed many little (and big!) stars over the years, we take as much delight in seeing our talent in print and on screen as they do. Our talent has featured in TV commercials, TV series, feature films, major ‘Hollywood’ films, catalogues, billboards, magazines and more!

The advice of all health advisory services is that if a woman is pregnant, planning to be pregnant or could be pregnant, then no alcohol is the safest choice.

learning difficulties and challenging behaviours become obvious.

It can take a number of years for the problems caused by alcohol exposure to appear. Very few children have the physical signs of exposure and the problems typically appear in school when developmental delays,

If you have concerns about your child’s behaviour, learning difficulties, and suspect your pregnancy was exposed to alcohol, consider seeking a diagnosis. Contact the NOFASD Helpline on 1300 306 238.

Why Montessori won me over

naturally learn by emulating their older peers so they develop faster while older children develop leadership through their mentoring of younger peers.

By Nigel Wong, Montessori parent.

A

s a parent, you may hear about Montessori from family and friends who’ve enrolled their children into a Montessori childcare or school but what makes it different? While there are many unique characteristics associated with the Montessori Method, here

In this environment, younger children are also more assertive while older children have greater empathy and respect towards others, even those who are younger.

are a few which inspired my decision towards choosing the Montessori Method for my child. • Multi Age Classrooms. Multi-age classrooms are a defining feature of Montessori preschools and schools because it gives children unique learning and social development opportunities. Younger children

• A Learning environment which emphasizes responsibility and self-discipline. During lesson time, children are presented with various learning materials by their teacher and encouraged to make a choice. Being able to choose their own learning activities means children are empowered towards making a decision from an early age. Being given responsibility means children are more willing to complete a task and happier to work independently.

our values #5 Abbey Year 9

• Community of mutual respect & empathy.

Inspiring a love e of of learning in an atmosphere ere of creativity, we encourage age

approach to life. i f e.

As a parent, I’ve observed my own child respectfully engaging with and speaking about his teachers more as peers rather than authority figures. A great social dynamic also exists amongst the children playing on the

playground as they have friends both from the “older” and “younger” classes. Consequently, I believe this contributes towards being less bullying amongst the children. If my parent experiences resonate with you, I recommend for you to call your local Montessori childcares or schools to find out more.
