Inside Out Occupational Therapy Group is excited to announce their new service – OT Check Ups for children in Kindergarten, Pre-Primary or Year 1. These relaxed 40-minute consults are a great opportunity to have your child’s development assessed by a qualified occupational therapist. Fine and gross motor, visual and auditory, written or pre-writing, attention, sensory, behaviour and emotional skills are all screened during this session and parents are provided with a report at the completion of the screen – including advice on ‘where to from here’. If your child requires further support, this will be discussed with you and onward referral will be facilitated. OT Check Ups provide peace of mind to parents and also serve as an excellent way to support your child’s progress over time. Check ups are offered at Manning, Mosman Park and Murdoch (St John of God) clinics,

nderstanding your child’s own unique developmental profile paves the way for a better start.

The evidence is overwhelmingly in favour of early identification and treatment of developmental problems, which can underpin your child’s success through school and beyond – socially, emotionally and academically.

bout 1% of children in Australia have Autism. Like all children, every child with Autism is unique. However, there are usually core symptoms characterised by differences in behaviour, social interaction, communication and sensory processing. People with Autism often experience additional challenges and problems like ADHD, anxiety and depression are particularly common. Whilst there is currently no single known cause of Autism, it is generally accepted to be caused by abnormalities in the structure and function of the brain. The diagnosis of Autism is an important step forwards because this can offer access to extra support at school and government funding for services. Autism should be diagnosed by a developmental paediatrician, psychiatrist or a psychologist who is qualified in assessing people with Autism. Treatment for Autism typically involves a coordinated approach from a range of healthcare professions such as paediatricians, psychiatrists, psychologists, occupational therapists and speech therapists. Research shows that the earlier a child starts treatment the better the results. Scientists think that this is

because young brains are more ‘plastic’ and can change more easily – a term described as ‘neuroplasticity.’ The Perth Brain Centre has been helping people with Autism for over 10 years. Everyone with Autism is different and there is no standard one-size-fits-all approach. Special scans called QEEG help to pinpoint the areas in the brain that may not be working normally, and this information is used to target treatment. Treatment often includes Neurofeedback Therapy, a type of targeted brain training that uses a sophisticated brain-computer interface to ‘strengthen’ or retrain the brain. Neurofeedback Therapy is most widely recognised as a drug-free treatment for ADHD, however, research also shows that it can be helpful for some people with Autism. Evidence specifically indicates that Neurofeedback Therapy can produce long-term improvements in attention, emotional regulation and social behaviour.
