hildren in Telethon Speech & Hearing’s Chatterbox playgroup program have had a flying start to the year. Exploring the world of transport, they’ve been on car trips, bus rides and aeroplane adventures! To adults, it might look like these children are just playing around. However, for children, play is the best time for learning about themselves and the world around them. And for children at Chatterbox, discovering the world around them is extra special as they learn to live in a world with their newfound hearing. Following the Early Years Learning Framework, which centres around learning through play, each week Chatterbox runs through a range of engaging and purposeful activities to help children build skills in a number of areas. Activities include tactile experiences at the playdough table, for coordination, problem solving with blocks, pretending and roleplaying in the home corner, and sensory fun with water and messy play outdoors. Songs, rhymes and group-based activities also help teach children how to share and take turns, follow instructions and develop their

confidence in a group setting. Telethon Speech & Hearing’s Chatterbox program is run by an early childhood teacher with the support of a speech pathologist, audiologist and occupational therapist. This ensures that the program addresses specific social, communication and listening skills, as well as fine and gross motor skills for children with permanent hearing loss. Children aren’t the only ones who get to play at Chatterbox. Telethon Speech & Hearing provides support to parents and caregivers through family nights and events throughout the year, helping them connect with other families who are on similar journeys. With small group sizes and rooms designed to combat the background noise that’s common in many community playgroups, Chatterbox is the perfect program for children with hearing loss. Telethon Speech & Hearing’s Chatterbox program supports children with hearing loss from birth to five years old. Call 9387 9888 or visit tsh.org.au for more information about mid-year enrolments, or how Telethon Speech & Hearing can help your family through the NDIS.

own Syndrome WA (DSWA) was formed in 1986 by a small group of parents with a common goal – to support people with Down syndrome in living their best possible lives. Today DSWA serves a state-wide population of over 1300 people with Down syndrome, as well as their families and support networks. In the past year, DSWA have successfully registered as an NDIS service provider, and have significantly expanded their programs and services. DSWA staff can give expert advice to anyone in the process of creating an NDIS plan for someone with Down syndrome. DSWA’s programs and services include: • A telephone support line – offering free advice to families, individuals, organisations and professionals. • Face-to-face support for advice on all issues, including NDIS plan creation. • Private, moderated online support groups for families. • A selection of books and other print resources available for loan.

• Developmental playgroups for young children with Down syndrome run by qualified education and occupational therapy professionals. • Social clubs for high-school-aged children and adults, where members build friendships and learn valuable life and social skills. • Training workshops for education professionals, employers and families. • Individualised employment support for people with Down syndrome – from training to finding and keeping a meaningful, well paid job. Many of these services are available free of charge, or can be included in an NDIS funding plan. For more information, please contact DSWA. Email admin@downsyndromewa.org.au, call 9368 4002 or visit the office at Suite 3, 2 Canning Hwy, South Perth, between 9am and 2.30pm, Monday to Friday. oming into the cooler months it’s important to be aware of the risk of burn injuries to children. Almost 500 children end up in Perth Children’s Hospital Emergency Department every year for a burn or scald injury – and children aged under five are at highest risk of these injuries.

Home visits available if required.

If your child does sustain a burn or scald: • Remove any wet clothes to let out the heat. If the clothes are stuck to the skin, do not remove them as this can cause further damage. • Place the burn or scald under cool running water for at least 20 minutes. What goes in my yellow-top bin?

U

s Western Australians have become increasingly enthusiastic when it comes to recycling, trying to recycle as much as we can. Unfortunately, the items a lot of what people put in their recycling bins can’t be recycled, at least not through yellow lid kerbside recycling. So what goes into my yellow lid recycling bin? • Paper and cardboard • Plastic bottles and hard plastic containers • Glass bottles and jars • Aluminium cans • Steel cans Recycling rules have also become stricter as recyclers in the world markets are demanding a cleaner, less contaminated

product. Your recyclables need to be clean, with lids off, not bagged and not mixed with other materials. Not sure if it goes in your home recycling bin? Just follow the list above. If in doubt leave it out. For more information visit faceyourwaste.com

The power and the passion

I

f there are two words that sum up the process of bringing a tired old car or motorcycle back to life, they are ‘power and passion’ – and that is the theme of this year’s WA Hot Rod & Street Machine Spectacular. When you walk through the doors and see the gleaming perfection of over 200 vehicles, just imagine the passion that the owners must have – to spend years chasing hard-to-find parts and perfectly putting it all back together! There is no shortage of power either, with cars such as the Chapman Bros ’59 Plymouth Fury Pro Slammer drag car and Eddy Tassone’s HSV GTO, each making over 3000 horsepower.

‘Preventing decay begins at home, ideally with teeth being cleaned twice a day from when they first appear,’ said Dr Rod Jennings of Toothbuds Paediatric Dentistry in Midland. ‘For infants, cleaning teeth with a wet flannel is usually sufficient, though by around age

18 months a toothbrush with a small smear of appropriate low-fluoride children’s toothpaste is more ideal.’

Learning to love the dentist

n an unfortunate statistic, the average child begins school with decay in at least one tooth. Many visit the dentist for the first time because of a toothache or dental abscess, which can leave lifelong anxieties about future dental visits.

‘Professional care is important, too. Establishing a nurturing, caring dental home for your child is ideal at age one – the perfect age to begin building a positive relationship with the dentist and identify subtle signs of early decay.’ To arrange an appointment with Dr Jennings, contact Toothbuds Paediatric Dentistry on 6155 9899.

The Australian Dental Association recommends children see the dentist for the first time when their first tooth becomes visible or when they reach 12 months of age – whichever comes first. As a paediatric dental specialist, Dr Rod Jennings is trained to focus on the unique needs of toddlers, children and adolescents.

Preparing for exams

Chrysalis Montessori School We are a community learning together and growing together to create a more joyous, just and sustainable world.

By Dion Mepham, Director of Revise Online

I

t may seem a long way from the business end of the school year, but there are some habits that students can get into now that will make exam time much easier.

• Playgroup (18mths 3½yrs). • Children House (Ages 3 – 6 yrs)

Open Day 23 August

The word ‘organisation’ sends chills down the spine of many students, but simple strategies can supercharge the study environment:

• Primary Classes (Ages 6 – 12 yrs)

• Keep the workspace tidy. A tidy desk = a tidy mind. This gives the mind a sense of order. • Start slow. A little recap early in the year will bring confidence. • Practice past exams or use Revise Online to ensure no nasty surprises at exam time. Clear organisation will provide the foundation for a calm and centred student, and lead to lower stress levels for parents. For further tips on exam preparation, visit mawainc.org.au, and for exam style questions, visit reviseonline.com
