rom Kindy to Year 12, when a student achieves success in the main subject areas the benefits flow on to all other aspects of schooling and to self-esteem. Support from a Specialist Teacher and extra tuition at a learning centre or for inhome tutoring can make a huge difference academically, socially and emotionally. Immediate results can be achieved. At A1 Learning, assessment and training is available for bright students who have learning difficulties such as Dyslexia or for advanced and gifted students. Students need a caring, happy environment where they can take risks with their learning and earn rewards for their efforts. At A1 Learning they have specialist, individual programs: • 4 to 5 year olds: a fun introduction to reading, writing and maths for keen pre-schoolers • Primary school reading, writing, spelling, handwriting and maths programs • High school English and maths programs: designed for each student (not from

generic or franchised computer programs and worksheets) • Study skills for upper primary and high school students: time management, organisation, essay writing, research skills • Extension programs for bored higher achievers or for capable students who are cruising comfortably and in danger of becoming bland learners • NAPLAN, GATE and scholarship preparation courses. Many of our Middle and Upper Primary maths students received special excellence awards at their schools at the end of last year and our young scholars took off like little rockets in their literacy and numeracy skills. For some of the extension students, the work they receive at the centre is the only literacy or numeracy work they ever do at their own high levels of operation. They are often lateral thinkers who need stimulation academically otherwise they run the risk of being trained to be ‘ordinary’. For more information call Julia on 0411 420 218 or 9402 5080.

Confidence to learn with Kumon

Y

ear 6 student, Madison, went from reading Year 3 level texts to studying Shakespeare, Orwell and Austen in just over one year with Kumon. Kumon individualises maths and English programmes to a child’s ability so students like Madison can learn as slowly or, in this case, as quickly as they like. “I love learning. I know most kids don’t but I do. I just enjoy it because I know I’m growing from it,” Madison said. Madison has now completed the Kumon English Programme and is able to enjoy school and help her friends, given her advanced learning. “At school, we started doing comprehension this term and we’ve been talking about high school and extended answers and I’ve been finding it rather easy,” she said. Madison’s mum, Vanessa, said that Kumon motivated her daughter to learn by giving her a challenge. “We just wanted to give Madison a bit of a challenge so we enrolled her in Kumon. After starting out on easier content, she eventually got that challenge. She’s just

willing to learn and she strives to get better,” Vanessa said. Madison has recently started on the Kumon Maths Programme. She’s revising and improving her skills with lower level maths so she is prepared to independently learn advanced topics. While she enjoys maths, English is still her subject of choice. “Lately I’ve read Pride and Prejudice and that was nice. There were some funny stories in there and it’s nice having irony and comedy and you get to see how they’re all different,” she said. In the future, Madison aspires to a career in medicine. “Since an early age, I’ve just had the passion for being a doctor and for helping people,” she said. Until then, Madison enjoys swimming, karate, netball and of course, reading. Her next goal is to complete the Kumon Maths Programme.
