Neurofeedback targets anxiety

A

nxiety is more than just feeling stressed or worried. It is a serious condition that’s characterised by persistent excessive worry. It makes it hard for a person to cope, and take pleasure from daily life. We all feel anxious from time to time, but for a person with anxiety these feelings cannot be easily controlled. Anxiety can affect people of all ages, with approximately 14% of all adults suffering from some type of anxiety disorder. Anxiety can affect children too, and research suggests that about 8% of children suffer from it, with symptoms starting as early as six years of age. We do not always know what causes anxiety, however, some research shows that people who suffer from the condition may have abnormal activity in specific regions of the brain. Treatment can help people manage, reduce and even eliminate the symptoms of anxiety. Some treatments can be provided by a GP, or they may give a referral to a psychiatrist, psychologist or other suitably-trained healthcare professional. The Perth Brain Centre focuses on providing Neurofeedback Therapy, which was featured in Dr. Norman Doidge’s book The Brain’s Way of Healing,

Creative courses for children

the sequel to his international best-selling book The Brain That Changes Itself, as an effective treatment for anxiety. Neurofeedback is a brain-based treatment that uses a sophisticated brain-computer interface to strengthen or retrain the brain. The Perth Brain Centre uses special brain scans, called QEEG, to pin-point the ‘problem’ areas of the brain. In many cases, anxiety is caused by too much fast brain activity in regions of the brain involved with stress and emotion. Neurofeedback can reduce the symptoms of anxiety by working on this ‘weak’ part of the brain. Neurofeedback is suitable for people of almost all ages. Patients sit comfortably whilst sensors precisely detect and measure brainwave activity. This information is analysed in real-time and presented as audio and visual feedback. Changing the brain takes time but people can notice improvements within a few sessions. For further information about how Neurofeedback Therapy can help you or someone you know with anxiety, please contact Perth Brain Centre on 08 6500 3277 or www.perthbraincentre.com.au

T

he International Centre for Excellence in Bayswater offers the full range of Victoria Carlton education programs for children and professional development for teachers. They are offering two exciting new programs – Jolly Music and Art From the Heart. Both these programs will be taught by talented educators with a huge amount of relevant experience. Enrolment is for the term and, if paid ahead, will be discounted to the equivalent of receiving one free session. The award-winning Jolly Music program will give all attending children an excellent background to music and, through a repertoire based on playground rhymes and songs, children will become aware of musical elements including pulse, rhythm, pitch, loudness and speed. Activities and musical games support multi-sensory learning and make the lessons fun. The singing lessons are carefully structured to build the key

musical skills of listening, singing in tune, inner hearing and, ultimately, reading and writing music. Taught in this way, music will build children’s motivation, enthusiasm and confidence, and lay the foundation for a lifetime of enjoyment. The Jolly Music program is suitable for children 5–9 years and will be held on Mondays from 4–5pm. Art from the Heart is a weekly art course that helps children express their feelings, deal with problems, develop their creativity, and improve empathy by identifying with characters from carefully chosen pieces of literature. The students will learn new art techniques and study the styles of selected artists. Art from the Heart is suitable for children 6–12 years and will be held on Fridays from 4–5.30pm. Call ICE on 9271 4200 or email iceinfo@iinet.net.au to enquire and make a booking. These two courses are also offered as incursion courses for schools.

There is plenty of fun for the kids with free carnival rides, face painting, camel rides and much more! When Brownes Dairy launched their new natural yoghurt range 16 months ago, the message was loud and clear – they wanted to provide WA families with natural, healthy and delicious locally made yoghurts. ‘We were absolutely single minded in creating yoghurt recipes for WA families that were the most natural and delicious that you could find on WA yoghurt shelves,’ Ivana Pereza, Marketing Manager at Brownes Dairy, said.

Opportunity and supported by Lotterywest and Perth Airport. For further information visit www.belmont.wa.gov.au or phone 9477 7248.

The handy yoghurt pouch has become a favourite lunch-box option for both kids and their mums, with over 12.5 million yoghurt pouches sold every year in WA. ‘We always knew that an on-the-go solution for mums was missing from our range. We were feeding our own kids Brownes Dairy yoghurt on a daily basis but when we wanted to go to the park, give them a snack in the trolley or in the car, there was no portable fuss-free solution,’ Ivana said.

delicious as ever. ‘The absolute focus was getting the recipe right,’ said Ivana. ‘We’ve focused on creating delicious, thick and creamy all natural yoghurt recipes with real fruit pieces that are not only delicious for the kids but mums and dads can enjoy too.’ The flavoured yoghurt recipes have been carefully crafted to reduce the total amount of added sugar.

We compared all the sugar content of yoghurt pouches and some had close to three teaspoons of sugar per serve,’ said Ivana. ‘The impact of sugar on our health is well documented, and it’s not just the sugar that was a concern, it was the whole ingredient panel; artificial flavours, thickeners, colours etc.

For parents who prefer to cut sugar out altogether from their yoghurt, Brownes Dairy have launched their Traditional yoghurt

The garden at MercyCare Wembley produces a variety of fruit, vegetables and herbs. Since no sprays or insecticides are used, all the food is safe for the children to eat and is regularly added to the lunch menu. As well as being fun, the garden provides some important learning opportunities.

‘Environmental programs are a big part of our all our Early Learning Centres, and teach children about healthy food and recycling,’

MercyCare Chief Executive Officer Chris Hall said. MercyCare’s Early Learning Centres are located at Bedford, Heathridge, Thornlie, Seville Grove and Wembley. Call 9442 3444 or visit mercycare.com.au for more information.

D

id you know that falls are the leading cause of hospitalisation for children under 15 years of age? Children are learning new skills every day and therefore it’s common for them to fall over while trying to crawl, walk, run, climb or play. Typically, children will fall over and get up with no more than a bruise or a bump. However, some sustain more serious injuries. It’s important to teach children how to climb safely and to implement some safety practices around the home. Here are Kidsafe WA’s tips to help prevent fall injuries: • Never leave infants unattended on raised surfaces • Ensure sides of cots are up and secured • Always use safety harnesses in highchairs and strollers • Use gates at the top and bottom of stairs • Don’t place furniture near windows or large toys in cots, children may use them to climb up and out

• Use play equipment suitable for children’s age and stage of development • Use protective gear during sports and helmets on bikes Supervise children and help them learn new skillsThe above tips, and teaching kids the skills to climb safely, can help prevent childhood fall injuries. The physical and structured training at ATI Martial Arts will improve a child’s concentration and discipline. Results can usually be seen within the first three months of training, with improved behaviour at school and an increased attention span. Training makes children more determined, and this often has a flowon effect to their school work and even their general behaviour in and out of school. It’s not a miracle fix, but martial arts can be a way to unlock your child’s potential and

Make a playdate with Peppa Pig By Fleur Michell

I

t’s hard for me to now comprehend, but before I had my first child six years ago, I had never heard of Peppa Pig. I now know more about this iconic kids’ character than some of my own relatives – everything from what Peppa likes to eat (carrots), to who her French pen pal is (Delphine Donkey) to what her father Daddy Pig does (he’s an architect). Over the years I’ve bought countless Peppa toys, books, apps and clothes for my kids. I’ve taken them to the Peppa Pig Live stage show and watched endless episodes on TV. I thought there was nothing more to be experienced as far as this mega-popular pig goes – but I was wrong.

your kids’ world is an understatement.

I have just taken a tour through Peppa Pig Playdate – a new super-sized interactive experience where Peppa’s world is set out on a huge floor space. To say it’s going to rock

M

ontessori Education began in 1907 in Italy, when Dr Maria Montessori, Italy’s first female medical doctor, commenced the first programme in San Lorenzo, Rome. A Montessori classroom is characterised by mixed age classrooms, student choice of activity, uninterrupted blocks of work time, discovery rather than instruction based learning, and educational materials that engage multiple senses. This helps to encourage your child’s natural curiosity and love for learning. Much research has been done and many articles published on the benefits of the Montessori program. An American study by Dr. Angeline Lillard, a University of Virginia professor of psychology, which compares the outcomes of 59 children from a Montessori school with those of a control group attending conventional public schools in the same area, found the following significant results: • Pupils learning at their own pace may have an advantage over those in traditional classrooms • By age five, Montessori educated children

are better in literacy, numeracy and playing cooperatively with others. Amongst the five year olds tested, the Montessori children also scored better on ‘executive function’ tests that cover their ability to adapt to changing and complex problems • By age 12, they exhibit more creativity and are better able to resolve social problems. The study also found these children to have a better sense of optimism and community If you would like to find out more about Montessori education for your child, you can find your nearest program in the Montessori Directory advert found on this page.

If your baby settles without it or it’s fallen out after falling asleep, don't attempt to put it back in. Try to recognise when your baby is looking for the dummy, rather than automatically offering it. If they are upset for no apparent reason during play, try to create a distraction or give extra cuddles before you reach for the dummy. Once you start using a dummy, there is the potential to use it unnecessarily, which can lead to bad habits such as having the dummy during waking or playing hours, when they are happy during car rides or while you're carrying your baby around. It's important not to fall into these bad habits as they become dependent on having the dummy in the mouth all the time, which can prevent them from learning how to create sounds like babbling and cooing, which is important for their speech development.

We'd like to introduce Filomena. She's our friend, a real person with real problems, and a mother to 5 fantastic children ranging in ages from 3 to 18.

Filomena is here to offer practical parenting tips for your baby or toddler.

Please spread the word by using #askfilomena and #kidsinperth.

Have a time in mind as to when you want to stop using the dummy. Usually babies are sleeping better and settle easier at around 12 months. If you have kept up your good habits and have created good control over its use, then weaning off around this age becomes a lot easier. If you decide not to at this time, then only use the dummy for sleep, and stick to your good habits.

I'm almost due with my first baby and I've decided I would like to use the dummy if needed. Can you give me your thoughts and tips on how to use it?

Remember to regularly keep up good hygiene with the dummy and check for wear and tear.

Rebecca -Guil dford

Babies are born with an urge to suck. If your baby shows signs of wanting to suck more after a feed, sucks a lot on their fists, fingers or thumbs or has trouble settling to sleep, then choosing to use a dummy can help settle them. Keep the dummy use in your control and create good habits. It’s best to limit its use to sleep times, when your baby is unwell, settling after any
