How do you look after your brain?
S
tudies show that more than 90% of us say that brain health is very important and that we feel that keeping our brain healthy is important to be able to enjoy everyday life – and maintain independence and a good memory as we get older. On average, most people think that we should be making plans for our future brain health in our mid-thirties. Brain research also shows that lifestyles that prioritise physical health and mental wellbeing can have a significant impact on brain health and cognitive function (how fast you think, how well you make decisions and how well you remember things etc.). In particular, several key factors are known to promote good brain health; regular physical exercise, a healthy well-balanced diet, effective stress management, good sleep, being social, being mentally stimulated and avoiding drugs, smoking and alcohol. International Brain Awareness Week (BAW), starting 12 March this year, is a global campaign to increase public awareness about the progress and benefits of brain research like this.
The Perth Brain Centre is an official partner of International Brain Awareness Week, which is the perfect time to reflect on your lifestyle and take steps to optimise your future brain health. Accurately measuring cognitive function can be a first step to improving your brain health and The Perth Brain Centre provides the latest in cognitive testing for people of all ages. Cutting-edge technology – developed by the leading global provider of computerised cognitive assessments and validated by over 30 years of research – allows them to accurately test cognitive function. The results of this testing are available immediately in a personalised, easy to understand report. Are you doing everything you can to look after your brain for today, tomorrow and the years ahead? The Perth Brain Centre has been helping West Australians for over 10 years. Loved by kids and tested by ‘fussy mums’
T
he Western Australian milk that families have grown up with for over a century has a fresh new look and the same great taste. Every week, hundreds of thousands of WA families choose Brownes Dairy milk as their milk of choice – and every week, hundreds of mums are involved at every stage of the farm to fridge process. From milking, production and quality control to product testing, the mums of Brownes Dairy are making sure the 135 million litres of milk produced every year meet their high standards. Alexander Heights foster mum, Michelle Ranieri, is one of these product testers – or as she calls herself, a ‘Brownes Dairy Fussy Mum’.
Brownes Dairy milk – a staple for most families – meets the needs of their kids.’ Another Brownes Dairy Fussy Mum, Nicole Ohm, says it’s this attention to detail that guarantees the quality of Brownes Dairy milk remains at its best. ‘Since 1886, more than 9,000 Brownes Dairy mums have made it possible for WA families to taste the love and care that goes into our milk,’ Nicole said. ‘When it comes to milk, we’ve got your back’.
‘For me it’s all about making your children’s wellbeing a priority. About knowing what’s best for the kids you care for and making decisions that are in their best interest,’ Michelle said.
Keep an eye out for Brownes Dairy’s new-look packaging at a supermarkets and convenience stores near you. They have milk to suit almost every need, every fussy eater and every ‘fussy mum’.
‘By having real-life mums involved in the process, families can rest assured that

alls are often considered to be part of everyday childhood, however, they can have potentially long-lasting and debilitating effects. In fact, falls are the most common cause of hospitalisation for children under 15 years of age, with children under five at greatest risk. The most common type of falls happen at home and on a single level. Luckily, many falls can be prevented with these simple steps:
• Keep one hand on baby when on the changing table, and have everything you need close by
• Use playground equipment that is suitable for your child’s age and stage of development
• Make sure bunk beds have guardrails, a fixed ladder and the Australian Standards tick of approval
• Keep objects and furniture that children can used to stand or climb on away from windows and balconies
• Use gates and barriers at the top and bottom of stairs
• Don’t use baby walkers, which are especially dangerous around hazards such as fireplaces and stairs.
• Never leave babies alone on a raised surface
• Ensure nursery equipment has the Australian Standards tick of approval
Although some falls may seem difficult to avoid, many can be prevented. For more information on preventing child injuries visit kidsafewa.com.au

Peter Rabbit – born to be wild
P
eter Rabbit makes the jump from beloved storybook character to the big screen in an irreverent, contemporary comedy with attitude.
Managing children’s behaviour in a positive way. With Dolly Bhargava
Peter’s feud with Mr. McGregor (Domhnall Gleeson) escalates over both the vegetable treasure in Mr McGregor’s forbidden garden and their rivalry for the affections of the warm-hearted animal lover who lives next door (Rose Byrne).
Tips for encouraging speech development
James Corden voices the lovable character of Peter, delivering a delightfully entertaining mix of mischief, adventurous spirit and charm.
• Teach them the concept of imitation – teach them actions to a song, how to wave bye-bye, clap their hands and locate their different body parts (Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes!). Body imitation often leads to speech imitation.
Also starring Margot Robbie, Elizabeth Debicki and Daisy Ridley as the voices behind triplets, Flopsy, Mopsy and Cotton-tail. Hopping into a cinema near you on 22 March.
• Encourage your child to look at your mouth while you model sounds and words.
Bully-proof your kids
• Encourage oral motor imitation and play. Make funny faces in the mirror and encourage movement of the tongue, lips, cheeks, and jaw. Blow out your cheeks, lick your lips, open your mouth, close your lips tightly, pucker your lips, smack your lips or shake your head up and down.
A
rm your child with the tools and confidence to stand up to the bully – without physically lashing out.
In most cases, the more assertive a child is, the less chance they will be bullied. ATI Martial Arts helps children become more confident and resilient in dealing with dominant personalities. They also teach selfcontrol and respect to children who have a tendency to bully others.
• Play blowing games – like blowing cotton balls, bubbles, feathers, candles, pieces of paper or whistles. Blowing a whistle provides excellent practice for lip rounding and lip compression, which is needed for making sounds such as p, b, m and w.
These important socialisation skills are taught through ATI’s proven little Dragon and kids Taekwondo syllabus. Many parents have come to the school to help turn their child’s life around and stop them from being preyed upon by bullies. In as little as three months of training, many children have gone from being the target of bullying to being a champion of selfconfidence.
‘whoosh’ every time your child goes down a slide, blow your cheeks out and making a popping sound, make circles on your tummy, rub and say ‘mmmm’, raise your hand in the air and say ‘so-o-o-big’, wave your hands and say ‘bye bye’, move a car and say ‘vroom’, move a toy dog along the table and say ‘woof woof’. Emphasise words that your child is more likely to have success with, like short words that begin with b, p, m, h, w, n, t or d. • If your child mispronounces a word, model correct pronunciation. Exaggerate the sound and make sure your face is visible to them. Say the misarticulated word correctly with emphasis. If the child says, ‘that's a big wabbit,’ say, ‘yes, that is a big rabbit – a big white rabbit.’ • Read books with pictures that contain difficult sounds.
• Consistently pair particular sounds with an activity – say

Why Montessori won me over
WA SchoolS FeAture
A
Say sí, oui or shì to multilingual learning
While there are many unique characteristics associated with the Montessori Method, here are a few which inspired my decision towards choosing the Montessori Method for my child.
arly Years Education is a pre-kindy and kindy school in Como that offers an exceptional educational experience for children 2–3 years old – one that utilises multilingual teaching.
By Nigel Wong, Montessori parent. s a parent, you may hear about Montessori from family and friends who’ve enrolled their children into a Montessori childcare or school but what makes it different?
E
• Multi Age Classrooms. Multi-age classrooms are a defining feature of Montessori preschools and schools because it gives children unique learning and social development opportunities. Younger children naturally learn by emulating their older peers so they develop faster while older children develop leadership through their mentoring of younger peers. In this environment, younger children are also more assertive while older children have greater empathy and respect towards others, even those who are younger. • A Learning environment which emphasizes responsibility and self-discipline. During lesson time, children are presented with various learning materials by their teacher and encouraged to make a choice. Being able to choose their own learning activities means children are empowered
towards making a decision from an early age. Being given responsibility means children are more willing to complete a task and happier to work independently. • Community of mutual respect & empathy. As a parent, I’ve observed my own child respectfully engaging with and speaking about his teachers more as peers rather than authority figures. A great social dynamic also exists amongst the children playing on the playground as they have friends both from the “older” and “younger” classes. Consequently, I believe this contributes towards being less bullying amongst the children. If my parent experiences resonate with you, I recommend for you to call your local Montessori childcares or schools to find out more.
The programs are designed to grow your child’s potential for becoming bilingual and multilingual through exposure to Spanish, French and Mandarin. This approach to learning creates broader language skills that help children learn to read and write. Classes are delivered in small groups of five to ten students, which enhances learning opportunities and gives teachers a chance to spend more time with each student. The school’s qualified teachers are positive and proactive, helping each child progress in
their learning and preparing them for a smooth transition to school. Early Years Education is currently taking registrations for 2018. To book an appointment or for more information, call Sue on 0402 117 398 or visit earlyyearsed.com.au

Why does my child have 2 rows of teeth? The appearance of two rows of teeth is due to the adult teeth coming in behind or in front of the preceding baby teeth, before the baby teeth have fallen out. The most common site for this to happen is the lower front teeth. This happens in about 30% of children.
Proudly brought to you by
Sometimes the baby tooth or teeth may need to be removed, but in many cases the baby teeth fall out a few weeks after the adult teeth appear. You should speak to your Paediatric Dentist if the baby teeth do not fall out within a few weeks. An xray may be needed to see how much of the roots of the baby teeth remain and assess the need for extractions.
