ealthy teeth are essential for children, helping them grow up pain-free and with good self-esteem. Yet many parents avoid dental checks for their children due to concerns about the cost of dental care.

inding out your child has been diagnosed with a hearing loss is overwhelming enough, without the challenge of figuring out what to do next and where to get help.

With rising rates of child tooth decay, delaying dental care can become expensive. The average five-year-old in WA starts school with decay in one or two teeth, and one in 10 five-year-olds have had decay in half their teeth. Many do not see a dentist for the first time until they already have a toothache, making for a stressful first experience with the dentist.

Learning that your child’s development will be delayed, and that they’ll face significant challenges when it comes to communication, can be just as devastating.

Fortunately, the Medicare Child Dental Benefits Scheme (CDBS), provided to families receiving government benefits such as Family Tax Benefit A, helps children access a limited range of dental treatments. ‘The CDBS provides for dental checks, cleanings, sealants, fillings, extractions and even nitrous oxide,’ said Midland Specialist Paediatric Dentist, Dr Rod Jennings. ‘Up to $1000 of treatment can be completed for each eligible child over a two year period.’ Toothbuds Paediatric Dentistry bulk-bills for children with sufficient balance remaining under the scheme, which provides

very real benefit to families. It means they can afford to see a specialist, with years of extra training caring for children’s teeth. Those without access to the scheme need not worry either, as there is no premium for specialist treatment at Toothbuds. And unlike a visit to a paediatrician or other specialist, no referral is needed. ‘Our team is happy to welcome any child – those with medical or sensory issues, anxiety about visits to the dentist, developmental issues with their teeth, or those who just appreciate a child-friendly environment,’ said Dr Rod Jennings. ‘The best time for a child’s first dental visit is at age one, or when the first tooth appears – whichever is sooner. There’s no better way to ensure every visit is all about prevention, rather than a cure.’ To contact the Toothbuds Midland office, call 6155 9899.

‘The time following a diagnosis of hearing loss can be very stressful for families,’ according to Felicity McNally, Manager for Early Intervention in Telethon Speech & Hearing’s Chatterbox program. ‘There are many specialist appointments and the fitting of hearing aids or cochlear implants can be very overwhelming.’

family-centred service that meets the needs of the child and whole family,’ said Ms McNally. ‘This includes personalised support throughout the NDIS process, as well as connecting families with each other through weekly playgroup classes.’ ‘The NDIS can be quite difficult to navigate and understand all on your own,’ she added. ‘We’re able to help families prepare for their planning meeting so that they can be the best advocate for their child.’ Call 9387 9888 or visit tsh.org.au to learn more about how Telethon Speech & Hearing can support you and your child.

The Chatterbox Early Intervention program is more than just therapy. Families work closely with TSH’s allied health team to gain professional guidance around managing their child’s hearing loss, whilst building a network of friendships with other mums and dads. ‘Chatterbox aims to provide a flexible,
