Building confidence at Kip McGrath By Hayley Ryan (North Perth)

K

ip McGrath Education Centres find that one of the biggest barriers to student success is a lack of confidence. Losing confidence in one’s ability in a subject can be detrimental to a student’s progress if it isn’t targeted, effecting them at school for many years. Kip McGrath Education Centres design individualised learning programs, catering specifically to each individual student’s learning needs. Lessons are taught by patient, experienced, fully qualified teachers equipped to deal with any learning needs and anxiety students may have in maths or English. The Kip McGrath teaching and learning method is systematic, methodical and has 35 years of success behind it. Each week builds upon the week before, and is consolidated with relevant homework – creating the necessary stepping stones to success. At Kip McGrath the success of all students is celebrated by teachers who care. Kip McGrath not only caters for children who are struggling, but can also extend those students who are bored with school work

that is too easy. They offer extension for gifted students and exam preparation for seniors. Online tutoring is now available for those who find it difficult to physically travel to a centre. Now all you need is an internet connection and an up to date computer to access services previously only available incentre. Kip McGrath teachers pride themselves on catering to each individual student and their parents. Each child is unique with their own strengths and weaknesses and getting to know these is one of the ways teachers support their students to reach their full learning potential. Separation: What about my child’s wishes?

W

hen parties separate and parents cannot agree on the future arrangements for the child including whom the child lives with and how much time they spend with the parties, who makes those decisions? Parents are often faced with a child expressing a wish of where they prefer to live or how much time they want to spend with the other parent. So how much weight is, or should be, given to those wishes? If parents cannot agree on the future arrangements for the children, the Family Court is required to consider what is in the child’s best interest. Whilst the Family Law Act does not prohibit children from giving evidence, leave of the court must first be obtained and there has only been a few instances of the court allowing a child to give evidence in proceedings. The court generally considers a child should be removed “as far as possible from parental conflict”. In an effort to do so, and ensure that undue pressure is not placed on a child by asking them to participate in the proceedings, the court can allow a child the opportunity to express his or her wishes by

appointing either an Independent Children’s Lawyer, Single Expert and/or Family Consultant to interview a child and ascertain their wishes. This attempts to ensure that the level and kind of participation sought is suitable for the needs and capacities of the individual child. In accessing the capabilities of the child, or how much weight should be attributed to his or her wishes, there is no hard and fast rule. However, the general approach is, the more mature and older the child is, the more weight the court will likely place on their wishes. The court is mindful of the difference between what the child wants and what he or she needs, as often this may not be in the child’s best interest. Therefore decisions regarding future arrangements for a child will not solely rest on any wishes expressed.
