Building Confidence at Kip McGrath

Glass doesn’t make for very good compost!

By Hayley Ryan (Kip McGrath North Perth)

Online tutoring is now available for those who find it difficult to physically travel to a centre. Now all you need is an internet connection and an up to date computer to access services previously only available in centre.

t Kip McGrath Education Centres, we find that one of the biggest barriers to student success is a lack of confidence.

Losing confidence in one’s ability in a subject can be detrimental to a student’s progress if it isn’t targeted, affecting them at school for many years.

E

very year the Resource Recovery Facility in Neerabup processes over 100,000 tonnes of general household waste collected from the Cities of Joondalup, Vincent and Wanneroo and the Town of Victoria Park. Here the organic part (food scraps, lawn clippings, garden pruning’s, paper etc.) is removed from the other waste and is turned into a composted soil conditioner.

Kip McGrath teachers pride themselves on catering to each individual student and their parents. Each child is unique with their own strengths and weaknesses and getting to know these is one of the ways we support our students to reach their full learning potential.

Kip McGrath Education Centres design individualised learning programs, catering specifically to each individual student’s learning needs. Lessons are taught by patient, experienced, fully qualified teachers equipped to deal with any learning needs and anxiety students may have in maths or English.

Unfortunately, glass deposited into the green-top bins can’t be used to make compost. This glass needs to be removed and is sent to landfill, but some of the glass still remains at the end of the process and contaminates the compost. This glass could more beneficially be utilised if residents placed it in the yellow-top recycling bin.

The Kip McGrath teaching and learning method is systematic, methodical and has 40 years of success behind it. Each week builds upon the week before, and is consolidated with relevant homework, creating the necessary stepping-stones to success. At Kip McGrath, the success of all students is celebrated by teachers who care.

To reduce this glass contamination and to improve recycling outcomes, the Mindarie Regional Council (MRC) and its member councils, supported by the Waste Authority, is running a ‘No Glass’ campaign to encourage residents to make use of their yellow-top recycling bins to dispose of bottles and jars.

Kip McGrath not only caters for children who are struggling, but can also extend those students who are bored with school work that is too easy. We offer extension for gifted students and exam preparation for seniors. Preparation for NAPLAN and OLNA is also available.

If you have a lot of bottles and jars take them to a recycling centre like those at Tamala Park or Balcatta. Large amounts of sheet glass, particularly broken glass from doors, windows and tables should be taken to and disposed of at your local tip or transfer station. The ‘No Glass in the green-top bin’ campaign has prompted residents to divert their glass away from the green-top bin but we need to keep up the effort and spread the word to those who haven’t yet changed their behaviour because glass doesn’t make good compost. “I have too much glass and my recycling

bin is full,” is something Geoff Atkinson, MRC’s Education Manager, often hears. His advice is to talk to your neighbours and see if they have some spare room in their recycling bin. You can also try to make room in your own bin by crushing cardboard boxes so they take up less room or, if you really have to, remove the cardboard and place that in the green-top bin because at least the cardboard can be composted.
