Face your waste
W
Australians send over 20 million tonnes of waste to landfill every year – making us on a per capita basis one of the most wasteful nations on Earth. Everything we buy and use eventually becomes waste that has to be disposed of. And waste is expensive to deal with, causing many associated environmental issues. For most people, dealing with waste is easy. We just put it in the bin where it remains hidden until the council takes it away – all while we sit back and relax. The waste is, out of sight out of mind – someone else’s problem. For too long the focus has been on dealing with the waste once it has been produced. Our best solution has been to try and recycle as much as we can – but we need to do more. It’s time to Face Your Waste. It is not just plastics, glass or food waste we’re talking about here – waste
encompasses everything we use. People need to own the problem and appreciate that we all have to do our part. The challenge is to reduce or stop waste being produced in the first place. Make less waste. What you do does matter. There are simple things that we can all do to reduce the amount of waste we produce. Things like: • Avoiding single use, disposable plastics. • Reduce wastage by only buying what is needed and in the quantity that is required. • Reusing items, including repurposing and repairing. If you produce less waste, it creates benefits that include: • Cost savings • Improved environmental outcomes • Leaving a better legacy for future generations. Producing waste is a problem. Be part of the solution. For more information, go to faceyourwaste.com.au

bout 10% of children in Australia have Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).
In the past, treatment for ADHD has been limited to medications like the stimulant ‘Ritalin’. However, research has shown that the effects of these medications tend to decrease after two years of use and may also cause side effects such as anxiety, nausea and difficulties with sleep. Nowadays it is generally accepted that the most effective treatment for ADHD should be ‘patient-centred’ and involve a range of interventions. Treatments that have also been proven to be helpful include behavioural therapy, psychoeducation, lifestyle, diet and Neurofeedback (brainwave training). There is no one-size fits all approach and families should be able to make an informed choice based upon the range of treatments now available. Neurofeedback is a drug-free treatment that uses a sophisticated brain-computer interface to ‘strengthen’ or ‘re-train’ the brain, and has been gaining in popularity over the past 10 years. It’s recognised by The American Academy of Paediatrics to be an effective treatment for ADHD and is
featured in Dr Norman Doidge’s book The Brain’s Way of Healing, the sequel to his international best-selling book The Brain That Changes Itself. Research recently published in the medical journal European Child & Adult Psychiatry has added further weight to the evidence supporting Neurofeedback. This research confirmed that Neurofeedback can work as well as medication – and with lasting results and little to no sideeffects. One of the key authors of the study, Dr. Martin Arns, says “This metaanalysis shows that after an average of six month follow-up, neurofeedback has a similar efficacy to active treatments including medication, opening the option to use medication more for short-term symptom relief and using neurofeedback to achieve more longer-term benefit in ADHD, with the added benefit of there being almost no side-effects.” The Perth Brain Centre has been helping children with ADHD, and their families, for over 10 years. Getting successful treatment for ADHD can change your child’s life. For further information, call 6500 3277 or visit perthbraincentre.com.au

ye contact, greetings, everyday chit-chat and full sentences are such important skills. But with technology crowding our lives, it’s easy to see why children are losing the art of conversation and verbal communication. Helen O’Grady Drama Academy’s unique drama program can help. For over 35 years, the academy has been helping children gain confidence in their verbal communication skills. It’s all done in a fun, stimulating way. Classes include speech training, dramatic play, creative movement, music, storytelling, dress-ups and more. At the Helen O’Grady Drama Academy, children can connect and communicate in a safe environment that fosters creativity and
imagination. All teachers are qualified educators with specialist training. Weekly classes for kids of all ages (3–17) are run at many locations throughout WA – and enrolments are now open. Call 9242 4722, email helen.davey@helenogrady.net.au or visit helenogrady.net.au

SOCIAL COMMUNICATION AND SOCIAL INTERACTION
I’m in a kindergarten classroom. I feel unsafe and insecure because my routine has been disrupted. Everything feels unpredictable and I can’t keep up. A person who is usually there might suddenly go away, there are new toys, and our activities are sometimes done in a different way or at a different time. So I try to engage in activities or behaviours that are directly under my control. This helps me reduce my stress.

I’m in a busy playground that has lots of play equipment. I’m on a swing and next to me is a long queue of kids waiting to have a turn. I have difficulties with understanding non-verbal language, so I am oblivious to their frustrated facial expressions and body language. I also struggle with mind reading, so I have difficulties imagining the impact of my behaviour on others. After a while, someone says sarcastically ‘some people just love swinging!’ but because I am very literal in my understanding I think they simply mean that I love swinging. I keep swinging. I finally get off the swing. I want to play on the seesaw now. However, there are other kids on the seesaw. After waiting for a short while, I start screaming. People think I am in pain, but I just want to use the seesaw. I find waiting very hard. Someone comes over and tries to calm me down but I can’t understand what they are saying. I hear a few words but the rest of them just disappear. I wish they would write it down or draw me a picture because then I could
RESTRICTED, REPETITIVE PATTERNS OF BEHAVIOUR
I keep on spinning the wheels of the car, or I flap a piece of paper in front of my eyes, or sift sand repetitively through my fingers. If I concentrate on doing these things then I can block out other things. This is my way of dealing with boredom, stress or being uncomfortable. I also have sensory sensitivities, and can easily become overwhelmed by the noise and lights in the room. Then I start throwing things, screaming and hiding under the table. I hope by seeing the world through the perspective of a child with ASD it has given us all some insight and understanding.

Q TOOTH
TIP
A
Is an electric toothbrush better than a manual one for my child?
Proudly brought to you by
The answer is it usually doesn't make a difference. Both tend to be sufficient at doing the job and it all comes down to how long and how well you brush. Please ensure the bristles are soft, you are using a fluoridated age appropriate toothpaste & following the golden rule of not leaving your children to brush their own teeth unassisted until they are 7-8 years of age.
