Tricks for spelling and reading
I
However, research shows that students who are struggling with reading and spelling will benefit most using a structured, ‘synthetic’ phonics program. A synthetic phonics approach, where children repeatedly practice blending and segmenting sounds, also leads to greater reading and writing fluency. When sounds and spelling patterns are introduced in a structured, orderly and complete way, children are more likely to recognise them when reading, and use them in spelling and literacy activities. Telethon Speech & Hearing’s Talkabout Literacy provides small group assistance for children who are experiencing reading and spelling difficulties at school.

R
ecycling has been in the news a lot lately, mostly for the wrong reasons – like poor recycling practices and the lack of recycling. Much of this is due to the poor recyclability of plastics. Available for students in Years 1, 2 and 3, Talkabout Literacy adopts an evidencebased, synthetic phonics approach to teaching reading and spelling – something that’s essential for struggling readers. Talkabout Literacy uses the Sounds~Write program which is endorsed by the Dyslexia-SPELD Foundation Class sizes are capped at six children, and led by a Specialist Teacher or Speech Pathologist and Education Assistant. Each weekly session is two hours and run in blocks of nine to ten weeks (depending on the school term). Enrol in Talkabout Literacy today and support your child’s literacy and learning. The problem with plastics
s your child finding reading and spelling tricky?
With 26 letters in the English alphabet, 44 speech sounds and over 200 different ways to spell these sounds, we often forget how tricky learning language and spelling can be for young minds to get their heads around as they grow up.
www.kidsinperth.com
So much is made of plastic these days. It’s wonderful stuff – lightweight, long lasting and versatile. There are lots of different types of plastic too, one for almost every use. Plastic isn’t natural – it’s a manufactured product. Unless it was destroyed, every bit of plastic ever made still exists. It doesn’t decompose, it just breaks down into smaller bits of plastic. So there are a lot of plastics in our litter, oceans and waterways. They’re maiming and killing wildlife and polluting the environment. By 2050, it’s said that there will be more plastic than fish in the ocean. Plastics can be recycled but it’s often not done well. The plastic needs to be
clean, not filled or coated with food or other substances, which is sometimes hard to do. There are lots of different plastics too, and it’s especially hard to recycle mixed or bonded plastics. You also need a large amount of plastic to recycle it. Recycled plastics are bought and sold in tonnes, and because plastic products are so lightweight, it takes a lot of them to make recycling financially viable. So not all types of plastic are recycled. Plus, there has to be market for recycled products. If we don’t buy it, the recycled product is not needed. What a conundrum – we have too much plastic but need more to effectively recycle it? Perhaps it’s just easier to avoid using and buying plastic in the first place? It’s hard to avoid plastic but it’s worth making a conscious effort to reduce your use. For tips on how to do this, visit faceyourwaste.com.au

From moo to you I
n our technologically-driven lives, it’s easy to lose connection to the natural world, and especially the process of where our food comes from. Living in the suburbs, most of our food is conveniently available from our fridge or supermarket. Although many adults take it for granted that milk comes from a cow, for some children, the idea that milk doesn’t start on a supermarket shelf can be a joyful revelation. It’s especially wonderful to witness the reaction when those children get the opportunity to meet and milk a real cow for the first time! The free Brownes Dairy School tours provide a rare opportunity for young students (from Kindy to Year 6) to understand where milk comes from and how it is used to make other delicious dairy products. The 90-minute tour itinerary starts at the Brownes Dairy ‘milking shed’ where they are heartily greeted by Farmer Damian and a tour guide. A short introductory ‘from moo to you’ video explains in a fun way how the milk is collected and delivered to shops to end up in your fridge at home. This is followed by a visit to the ‘innovation kitchen,’ where students learn about food safety and quality, enjoy a dairy taste-test and complete
a dairy food experiment. The children then witness technology at work as the milk bottles are filled and placed in crates ready for delivery. The undeniable tour highlight is getting to milk Farmer Damian’s Jersey cow, Betsy!
Due to popular demand, this award-winning, curriculum-aligned program is now available three days a week from Term 2. To find out more, or to secure a booking date for a free school tour, please let your child’s teacher know they can visit the Brownes Dairy website at brownesdairy.com.au to fill in the online booking form. Farmer Damian and Betsy look forward to sharing the wonder of where milk comes from!

Enjoy unlimited train and vintage bus rides all day on Sunday 19 May from 9.30am to 4pm. Your ticket also includes access to Old Macdonald’s farm display, the vintage bus display, the Ellenbrook Scouts display and entry into the Revolutions Museum.
That’s where the Helen O’Grady Drama Academy’s unique drama program can help. For over 35 years, the academy has been helping children gain confidence in their verbal communication skills. Classes are taught in a fun, stimulating way and include speech training, dramatic play, creative movement, music, storytelling, dress-ups and more.
For additional cost, you can visit the bouncy castles, rides and games, buy souvenirs, visit a variety of food and drink vans and more. And after your day of adventure ends, you can pick up a children’s book about Ashley and his friends to take home.
At the Helen O’Grady Drama Academy, children can connect and converse in a safe environment that fosters creativity and imagination. Weekly classes for kids of all ages (3–17) are run at many locations throughout WA. All teachers are qualified educators with specialist training.

Preventing children’s tooth decay
Ashley & Friends Day
T
ooth decay is the most common chronic disease for Australian children – and it’s on the rise. The average five-yearold starts school with decay in one or two teeth, and 10% have decay in half their teeth. Conventional wisdom suggests decay can be avoided by limiting sugar consumption, using the appropriate fluoride toothpaste and helping your kids brush twice a day. Yet, despite best efforts, many parents find that their child still requires treatment. ‘One key to decay prevention is establishing a nurturing ‘dental home’ for your child,’ said Dr Rod Jennings of Toothbuds Paediatric Dentistry. ‘Children who regularly see a dentist for preventive care are typically more confident, more relaxed and suffer less tooth decay. A first visit to the dentist is recommended at age one – and home care is important, too.
‘Many families get the basics right but forget to clean between the teeth,’ said Dr Jennings. ‘Toothbrushes are effective where there are spaces between teeth but, where the teeth are tight together, floss is the only way to clean between. Your dentist can tell you when to start flossing and offer some tips on how to use floss for even the wriggliest toddler!’ Some children are just more prone to tooth decay too. Enamel hypomineralisation – a tooth defect where porous or chalky patches on the teeth are less resistant to cavities – is quite common in both baby teeth and adult teeth. But, if picked up early, even these cavity-prone teeth can be protected from decay. To arrange an appointment with Dr Jennings, contact Toothbuds Paediatric Dentistry on 6155 9899.

athematics uses everyday skills like counting, measuring, estimating, problem solving and reasoning. Unfortunately, many people believe that practicing mathematics means doing repetitive sums and following procedures.
People often think they don’t need a will because they aren’t wealthy, or they assume their spouse will get everything. However, you should have a will irrespective of your age or position in life, so your family are supported and aware of your wishes. If you have a will, consider if it needs to be updated, especially if there has been a major life change, such as the birth or death of a child, marriage, or separation from your partner. At HBR Family Lawyers, their experienced lawyers will provide advice to ensure your wishes can be carried out.
