For they are jolly good programs! ictoria Carlton, Director of International Centre for Excellence is convinced that their chosen JOLLY LEARNING programs can help all children to read and write to high standards.
V
“We take children who are 4 years behind and help them catch up using JOLLY PHONICS and JOLLY GRAMMAR,” says Ms Carlton. Her teachers use colours and actions to help children learn phonics, spelling and grammar skills in an enjoyable fashion. “Even five and six year olds can learn about adjectives, verbs and nouns and understand the structure of our language if taught with these methods. Because children learn easily when colours and actions are part of the program, this program works for all children.” Ms Carlton has a plan to spread these effective and empowering programs throughout the world. “We train thousands of teachers all around Australia and South East Asia to use these methods as well as providing intensive teaching to children at our Bayswater centre. We’ve made licences available so that schools
and teachers can have full access to the lesson plans and resource materials. Full lesson plans are provided to schools and teachers, along with worksheets and resources. Full licences are now available for 2-12 year old children.” Victoria was invited to make a presentation to the recent Jolly Learning conference in Hong Kong. She shared research teaching ideas and the wonderful results from her centres to help convince delegates that a multisensory, systematic way of teaching will really get results. The JOLLY LEARNING programs benefit children from 2-12 years. Victoria has incorporated them into her own programs as core skills. There will be a free introduction night to Victoria’s programs at ICE on Tuesday 26 November, 7-9pm. Both parents and teachers are welcome (notes and refreshments provided.) Numbers are limited so please make a firm booking. If you would like an appointment to discuss concerns about your child and find out ways we can help, come to the introduction evening or email info@ice-au.com, phone 9271 4200 for a free individual appointment.
Where the NAPLAN fails by Dr Julia Solomon he NAPLAN test is administered by the beginning of second term in every school in Australia for the purpose of ranking schools in accordance with the results for students in grades 3, 5, 7, and 9. Parents and other educators expect that the test confirms that teachers are adhering to the Australian curriculum which is formulated by the same body that produces the NAPLAN.
T
The purpose of assessment in education has presumably always been to identify the students who are not performing to expectation for their age and grade; so that these students can be provided with programs to enable them to realise their potential. Sadly the NAPLAN achieves neither of these goals. The preparation for the test appears to begin in the year previous to when the test is to be taken. It therefore overrides the normal timetable of instruction in which students themselves should discover their level of understanding of the syllabus subjects. A second disappointing aspect of the NAPLAN is that the results are given to
parents sometime in the fourth school term when it is generally too late to apply school intervention. It’s important for parents and the students themselves to know how each individual rates in the crucial subjects of literacy and mathematics, so that timely assistance can be provided. It is also important to know when a child is at risk of failing in these subjects so that preventive action can be implemented. The NAPLAN does not serve these purposes. At the Learning and Literacy Centre in Morley they assess an individual student’s achievement at any time in literacy and numeracy. They compare the results with the expectation for age and grade, and discuss these with parents without delay and suggest appropriate programs that can be applied immediately. This objective independent assessment will answer questions from parents who are more concerned about their child’s educational future than a school’s ranking on the world wide web. See Diary page for seminar dates. Contact them on 9276 9060 or email info@worldliteracy.com.au

D
In his new book, Will Mozart Make My Baby Smart? And other myth-busting tales of pregnancy and childhood, Professor Andrew Whitehouse of the Telethon Institute for Child Health Research poses those questions that make you gasp, snigger and ponder; the questions that you’ve thrown around over a coffee with friends, without ever reaching a conclusion. In a wonderful combination of stories from modern parenting, tales from history, and scientific research, Dr Whitehouse busts open thirteen of the best myths around, and provides reassurance and light relief from the challenges of parenthood.
Andrew Whitehouse leads autism research at the Telethon Insitute, trained as a speech pathologist, has a PhD in psychology, and is a former Oxford University Research Fellow. He is also a regular media commentator on child development issues. www.uwap.uwa.edu.au

For families of veterans, the battle goes on ive weeks pregnant, Miriam Zariffa’s world was perfect. Her husband Peter, a doctor in the Australian Army, had come home after serving in East Timor and they were gearing up for a new addition to their family when tragedy struck.
F
Grieving and facing life as a single parent, a friend put Miriam in touch with Legacy. Run by volunteers and financed by donations, Legacy gave her not only the financial support but the emotional strength she so badly needed. “I was five-weeks-pregnant, I felt so alone. I would have locked myself away and thrown out the key had it not been for Legacy,” she says.
Legacy helps with counselling, housing, medical and social support, as well as nurturing children’s education by contributing to school fees, uniforms and recreation.
As Australia confronts the challenges of modern conflict, service personnel are returning home afflicted with not only physical but also psychological conditions.

As a family owned and operated centre it was a scary beginning for Anita Endersby as she turned her passion for the Montessori Method of education for children aged 2-5 years into reality on the smell of an oily rag. Seadragonz’ philosophy is that “it’s all about the kids, doing whatever it takes to make learning fun while learning to love and respect the water such that swimming becomes a lifelong skill and they become safer in and around the water. When should parents take first aid lessons? very parent of a baby or toddler should take part in a child-specific first-aid course!
E
First aid skills are vital and should be refreshed as your child grows because hazards are always evolving. When babies start crawling and picking up things, parents are concerned about choking. These concerns shift when the child is walking and exploring by opening cabinets and doors or falling over themselves because they haven’t developed their balance. Worries now start to shift to falling, poisons and burns. As a result, the first aid training offered by Family First Aid is different because it has a practical focus on children and family
concerns. Developed by Steven Lewsen, a former ambulance officer and medical lecturer, it provides practical knowledge that can be applied immediately if required. Visit www.familyfirstaid.com.au to view a short video of one of his students, Katrina, telling her story about how she saved her 7 month old son. To book a first-aid courses in your home please call 9275 6666 and talk to Steve.

The pool safety net is designed as a deterrent for children; it’s not a trampoline or something to play on, as the 100mm squares are bigger than preschoolers’ feet but smaller than their heads. Children won’t intentionally go onto the net because their feet will go through (but their heads won’t). They stay well away from the net because it isn’t fun.
Well, not anymore! Introducing the Trail Gator Tow Bar.
more amazing, you can disconnect in seconds and ride independently. Much better than an expensive trailer bike, that wouldn’t encourage independent riding skills and costs twice as much.

The easiest family cycling trip ever erth is a great place to go cycling with your young children. It’s something you can all do together and get some much needed exercise.
here are many reasons for having a safety net, most importantly because it has a 100 percent safety record since its inception in 1974 (no drownings). The pool safety net is a barrier between the child and the water – drownings happen at the water’s edge, not the fence line.

Inventor Flint Lockwood's genius is finally being recognised as he's invited by his idol Chester V to join The Live Corp Company, where the best and brightest inventors in the world create technologies for the betterment of mankind. With the fate of humanity in his hands, Chester sends Flint and his friends on a dangerously delicious mission, battling hungry tacodiles, shrimpanzees, apple pie-thons, double bacon cheespiders and other food creatures to save the world again!
