For they are jolly good programs! ictoria Carlton, Director of International Centre for Excellence is convinced that their chosen JOLLY LEARNING programs can help all children to read and write to high standards.

V

“We take children who are 4 years behind and help them catch up using JOLLY PHONICS and JOLLY GRAMMAR,” says Ms Carlton. Her teachers use colours and actions to help children learn phonics, spelling and grammar skills in an enjoyable fashion. “Even five and six year olds can learn about adjectives, verbs and nouns and understand the structure of our language if taught with these methods. Because children learn easily when colours and actions are part of the program, this program works for all children.” Ms Carlton has a plan to spread these effective and empowering programs throughout the world. “We train thousands of teachers all around Australia and South East Asia to use these methods as well as providing intensive teaching to children at our Bayswater centre. We’ve made licences available so that schools

and teachers can have full access to the lesson plans and resource materials. Full lesson plans are provided to schools and teachers, along with worksheets and resources. Full licences are now available for 2-12 year old children.” Victoria was invited to make a presentation to the recent Jolly Learning conference in Hong Kong. She shared research teaching ideas and the wonderful results from her centres to help convince delegates that a multisensory, systematic way of teaching will really get results. The JOLLY LEARNING programs benefit children from 2-12 years. Victoria has incorporated them into her own programs as core skills. There will be a free introduction night to Victoria’s programs at ICE on Tuesday 26 November, 7-9pm. Both parents and teachers are welcome (notes and refreshments provided.) Numbers are limited so please make a firm booking. If you would like an appointment to discuss concerns about your child and find out ways we can help, come to the introduction evening or email info@ice-au.com, phone 9271 4200 for a free individual appointment.

Where the NAPLAN fails by Dr Julia Solomon he NAPLAN test is administered by the beginning of second term in every school in Australia for the purpose of ranking schools in accordance with the results for students in grades 3, 5, 7, and 9. Parents and other educators expect that the test confirms that teachers are adhering to the Australian curriculum which is formulated by the same body that produces the NAPLAN.

T

The purpose of assessment in education has presumably always been to identify the students who are not performing to expectation for their age and grade; so that these students can be provided with programs to enable them to realise their potential. Sadly the NAPLAN achieves neither of these goals. The preparation for the test appears to begin in the year previous to when the test is to be taken. It therefore overrides the normal timetable of instruction in which students themselves should discover their level of understanding of the syllabus subjects. A second disappointing aspect of the NAPLAN is that the results are given to

parents sometime in the fourth school term when it is generally too late to apply school intervention. It’s important for parents and the students themselves to know how each individual rates in the crucial subjects of literacy and mathematics, so that timely assistance can be provided. It is also important to know when a child is at risk of failing in these subjects so that preventive action can be implemented. The NAPLAN does not serve these purposes. At the Learning and Literacy Centre in Morley they assess an individual student’s achievement at any time in literacy and numeracy. They compare the results with the expectation for age and grade, and discuss these with parents without delay and suggest appropriate programs that can be applied immediately. This objective independent assessment will answer questions from parents who are more concerned about their child’s educational future than a school’s ranking on the world wide web.
