Better Start for Children with Disability Initiative
T
he Better Start for Children with Disability Initiative provides funding for early intervention services. Children are eligible for the Better Start program if diagnosed with one of the following disabilities: • Cerebral palsy • Deafblindness • Down syndrome, including mosaic Down syndrome • Fragile X syndrome with full mutation • Hearing impairment • Sight impairment • Prader-Willi syndrome • Williams syndrome • Angelman syndrome • Kabuki syndrome • Smith-Magenis syndrome • CHARGE syndrome • Cornelia de Lange syndrome • Rett’s Disorder • Cri du Chat syndrome; or • Microcephaly
Children with an eligible diagnosis must register for Better Start before they turn 6 years old. A child will have until they turn 7 to access funding. Eligibility criteria and thresholds apply. Children registered with Better Start can access up to $12,000 (maximum $6,000 per year) to pay for early intervention services. These services include: • • • • • •
audiology occupational therapy orthoptics physiotherapy psychology and speech pathology
Children living within the My Way or NDIS trial sites can access funding from Better Start until their plan is in place. Educators trained in the Victoria Carlton methods use specialised multisensory games, activities and equipment from around the globe to stimulate natural intelligence and help every young learner to be poised for school success.
Victoria recently authored the book All Kids Are Smart and truly believes all children can be taught to increase intelligence and develop their enormous potential.
In this program, children are given brain stimulation exercises and helped to access whole-brain learning. Children also improve upon their ability to focus and concentrate.
This program is available in Bayswater at ICE (9271 4200) and Cockburn Central at AGAPE (9414 7191). Both centres also run very structured, creative, fun-filled courses to help primary and high school students reach their full potential. Victoria Carlton’s innovative and well researched maths and literacy programs are well known around the world and acknowledged to be extremely effective and based on best educational practice
