part of everyone’s life. “Providing first aid in a medical emergency can have a huge impact and support the efforts of paramedics and doctors,” Mr Harding said.
he long Christmas break is an excellent opportunity for children to catch up and get confident before Term 1 in the New Year.
One of the perils at this time of year is children playing around water, especially those who have not learned to swim. “Drowning is a serious risk at any time of the year, but particularly as the weather warms up,” said St John Ambulance WA First Aid Services and Training General Manager, Aaron Harding. “St John paramedics attended several drowning and near-drowning cases last summer and sadly there are often tragic outcomes.”
In 2015/16, St John trained more than 317,000 people in first aid, including more than 124,000 WA school students through the First Aid Focus program.
Parents need to ask themselves these questions before 2017 comes around:
He said children must be supervised at all times, whether you’re at the home, at the pool or the beach. “An adult should be supervising children at all times and that adult should know CPR and first aid. It would be great if this message could be heeded,” he said. “Let’s not have one more of these incidents this year.” St John, the state’s leading first aid training provider, wants to make first aid a
Managing a child who has drowned and is unconscious is just one of the skills St John’s teaches in its Caring for Kids course. Each person that enrols in Caring for Kids will receive a complimentary Tiny Tots first aid kit, valued at $35. The course helps equip parents, grandparents and carers of young children to be able to respond to a range of child-related injuries and illnesses. For information about first aid training or the Tiny Tots first aid kit, call 9334 1233 or visit stjohnambulance.com.au St John reminds people to call triple zero (000) for an ambulance if they witness an emergency such as a drowning.
• Has your child had a difficult year? • Are they disappointed with their achievements? • Do you feel their needs are not being met by the school system? • Does your child avoid written work, spell poorly and prefer not to read? • Would you like your child to begin next year on a more positive note? So often children forget valuable concepts and their skills during the school break, letting their IQ and confidence levels dip during January. You can make sure this doesn’t happen by enrolling your children in the stimulating educational programs at ICE during this time. Victoria Carlton and her dedicated teaching team have planned a full
January program of academic and creative holiday programs that are designed to help your child shoot for the stars in 2017. Bookings are now open and working parents can take care of the extended hours to allow early drop-off times. “Our results are very high during holiday times as the children are well rested, relaxed and very receptive,” said Victoria. “We help them to catch up and then show them some of the more difficult concepts they will meet during the New Year. We deliberately offer very affordable packages so all children can take advantage of this opportunity.” For more information, please call ICE on 9271 4200 or email iceinfo@iinet.net.au. Alternatively, check out their website www.ice-au.com or their Facebook for more details. Victoria Carlton will be adding weekly Christmas and holiday learning ideas and tips to the International Centre for Excellence Facebook page.
