The power of routine and consistency at Kip McGrath By Hayley Rya n – Nor th Perth Centr e

A

t Kip McGrath Education Centres, we understand the how important a consistent learning routine and revision is to a student’s success. All of our students achieve huge gains from our 80 minute sessions, prepared and taught by fully qualified and experienced teachers. We develop programs specifically designed to boost your child’s confidence each week. Each lesson, students receive homework specifically designed to consolidate their learning – encouraging a deeper level of understanding and retention. The relationship between the tutor and student is also vital – and we pride ourselves on the rapport we build with our learners. Our tutors really gets to know them, their struggles and their strengths. We truly want to see them succeed! You don’t have to come to a Kip McGrath centre for help. Over the holidays we offer flexi lessons to continue your child’s learning journey, both online and in the centre. Our purpose-built online tutoring is now available

in many centres. All you need is an Internet connection with adequate speed and you can have a tutor working face-to-face with your child. Because of this flexibility in our delivery of tutoring, we can offer lessons at times that suit you. It is never too late or too early to seek our help if you feel your child is losing confidence and becoming disheartened with school. Engaging early learners

C

reating a stable and nurturing environment is a vital factor for your child’s development. The opportunity to form long-lasting friendships is important, especially for the youngest children who are learning to form secure attachments that will be the foundation for future relationships. That’s why more parents choose to enrol their children into the Early Learning program at Guildford Grammar School. Their innovative early learning programs, along with their exceptional teaching staff, set the foundation for your child’s future. With an active, flexible approach to learning, a program is tailored to suit the specific needs of your child. It’s this focus on personal excellence that inspires each individual to achieve his or her best. Early Learning at Guildford Grammar School is all about engagement – through a dynamic mix of curiosity and the crucial skill development of writing, reading, maths, science skills and

competency. What the children see and experience at Guildford Grammar School are classrooms where they feel safe and secure to try new things, meet new friends and “show off” their learning. Every day in Early Learning is filled with awe, wonder and creativity. This – combined with the teachers’ deep understanding of the skills and competencies the children need – creates a dynamic, fun and engaging environment for young children. Families interested in learning more about Early Learning at Guildford Grammar School can attend a tour of the school on Wednesday 26 October. All of the details are on the website at www.ggs.wa.edu.au Private tours of the school are also available on request by calling 9377 9247. Guildford Grammar Preparatory School caters for boys in girls from Kindergarten through to Year 6.

Improv key to resilient kids

mprovisation is increasingly being recognised as a powerful tool to help kids be more flexible and better cope with change – as well as boost their confidence. Research shows improv supports creative thinking, improves social interaction – including in children with autism spectrum disorders – and stops the progression of aggressive behaviours in young people. “Kids with anxieties, those worried about being perfect and those that struggle to bounce back when things don’t go their way (or as planned) can benefit from learning how to think on their feet and trust themselves more,” explained Glenn Hall, WA Academy of Performing Arts improv lecturer and the head of Just Improvise. “Cooperation, teamwork and being kind while having fun are all keys to improv – and life.”

Confidence for kids at the beach

S

urfBabies and SurfKids are fun six-week programs that offer children (2-7 years) and their parents the opportunity to develop confidence in the water and learn about beach safety. Each age group accommodates different levels of skills and confidence. Even if your child is an experienced beach-goer, they will benefit from these programs. Megan’s son Oliver wouldn’t touch the water’s edge when he first started – but each week he became more comfortable at the beach. “He loved the songs and activities that helped him relax,” she said. “By the end of the six weeks he was not only playing in the shallows but was so excited to splash around! He can’t wait to go again this Summer.” Their next programs start on Saturday 5 November at eight locations around Perth Metro area.

Perth’s best kept foodie secret

A national event just for kids!

H

ere in WA the celebrations for Children’s Week are as big as our state!

S

pencer Village Food Hall is one of Perth’s hidden gems for Asian street food. Tucked away and located along Spencer Road in Thornlie, it’s easily missed and overlooked. However, if you take the time to visit, it will quickly become a family favourite.

Families are invited to get into the spirit of the festivities during a week long program of events from the 22-30 of October. Meerilinga has been the proud convener of Children’s Week in Western Australia since 1985 – a role that gets more and more exciting as communities around our state get in on the celebrations. If you would like to join in to one of their events, just visit the Children’s Week WA website to learn more. This year’s program includes a Free Family Fun Day at Whiteman Park and Cubby Building with Nature Play WA.

Inside, there is a great variety of Asian street food stalls, each with its own signature or speciality dishes. The food hall is a friendly and comfy place with long benches and seats, so if you’re sitting next to a regular, why not ask what’s good?

Finally, apart from the delicious food, prices are really cheap, freshly cooked and quickly served, really helpful when you’re going out with kids.

Being very spacious, Spencer Village is convenient for those last minute catch ups with family and friends. There’s no need for dressing up, reservations or long queues at Spencer Village. It’s easy and hassle free dining.

Turtle Time for Local Community Spring time marks the beginning of the Longnecked Turtle breeding season in WA’s southwest. Females become vulnerable to threats such as road traffic and predation.

Education & Performing Arts

Happy children achieve results

V

ictoria Carlton’s EQ4KIDZ course leads to better academic results. This is because children develop an ‘I can’ attitude and stop holding back in school. They are more positive and resilient, with improved self-esteem.

This course also increases children’s confidence. Students are led through art and drama activities that are proven to help them better understand themselves and others. EQ4KIDZ is offered in Australia and SE Asia and Victoria’s goal has always been the

same – to help all children reach their potential. This transformative program can be conducted at schools and training is available for teachers and staff who want to facilitate the course themselves.

The ear is the gateway to the brain

J

essica, an eight-year-old girl in grade three often misunderstands what parents, siblings or teachers ask her. She mispronounces words, is easily distracted by ambient noise and does not remember what she has been told. She has difficulties with her reading, spelling, academic performance and socialisation.

Readers who are interested in enrolling can contact ICE on 9271 4200 or email International Centre for Excellence iceinfo@iinet.net.au The Victoria Carlton centre also offers academic courses for literacy and numeracy skills.

Jessica suffers from auditory processing difficulties which prevent her from fully understanding and remembering what people say to her. Many kids with ADHD, autism and learning difficulties have an auditory processing issue. As the ear is the gateway to the brain and the body, the TomatisŽ Method helps these children by retraining and strengthening the connections between the ear, the brain and the body – at a physical and emotional level – in a gentle and non-intrusive way.
