ADHD Awareness Month

O

ctober is ADHD Awareness Month and the theme this year is ‘setting the record straight.’

In the past, treatment for ADHD has been limited to medication, however, nowadays it is generally accepted that the most effective treatment for ADHD should be ‘patient-centred’ and involve a range of interventions. Treatments that can also help include behavioural therapy, psychoeducation, lifestyle changes and Neurofeedback (brainwave training). There is no one-size fits all approach and families should be able to make an informed choice based on the range of treatments now available. Neurofeedback is a drug-free treatment that uses a sophisticated brain-computer interface to ‘strengthen’ and ‘re-train’ the brain. In June this year, Germany revised its treatment recommendations for ADHD to include Neurofeedback, and research recently published in the medical journal European Child & Adult Psychiatry added further weight to the evidence that Neurofeedback can work as well as medication. One of the key authors of the study,

month

PRICELESS

Be inspired by Emma Wiggle By Jacqui Kay, Mum and Manager at Brownes Dairy

Dr. Martin Arns, said ‘this meta-analysis shows that after an average of six month follow-up, neurofeedback has a similar efficacy to active treatments including medication, opening the option to use medication more for short-term symptom relief, and using neurofeedback to achieve more longer-term benefit in ADHD, with the added benefit of there being almost no side-effects.’ Traditionally the diagnosis of ADHD is based upon a clinical interview with a specialist, who often uses information provided by parents and teachers. The Perth Brain Centre uses QbCheck, the world’s only ADHD test that is CE Marked, FDA Cleared and TGA Approved for use as an aid in the accurate assessment of ADHD. Objective testing can help inform the decision-making process and direct effective treatment. The Perth Brain Centre has been helping people with ADHD for over 10 years. Find out more by calling 6500 3277, visiting perthbraincentre.com.au or attending a special ADHD Information Session in October (details on website).

W

e love to sing and dance around our house, listening to our favourite playlists and getting our groove on. My five year old daughter loves all forms of dance, most of which are self-taught. To indulge her passion, I dutifully enrolled her in local ballet lessons. After one very enjoyable term (a mere few weeks) she then decided that she would prefer to do tap or Irish dancing, perhaps even Auskick. I would have entertained one of these requests but a wise mum once advised me to stick to one thing for 12 months, otherwise we dip our toe into everything and never really get our feet wet. So I put it to my daughter that we should stick with the ballet until the

end of the year concert and learn the basics of dance, just like Emma Wiggle. Well – enough said! Emma Wiggle started ballet at four and then moved into other forms of dance and music. The more I looked into Emma to inspire my daughter, the more I realise she rocks! Emma’s trained in ballet, Irish, jazz, hip hop, tap and contemporary dance. Not to mention being a singer, playing drums, trumpet and piano. She even knows sign language! Brownes Dairy are proud partners of The Wiggles. It’s wonderful to have world-class Australian children’s entertainers like The Wiggles for our kids to know, love and see perform live.

Brownes Dairy are now giving budding WA entertainers the chance to win a meet and greet The Wiggles at their Wiggle Pop! Big Show on Sunday 18 November at Perth Arena! Just look for specially stickered packs of Brownes Dairy yoghurt (including the new Top Down) and white milk and enter the unique code from the sticker online. Terms and conditions available at brownesdairy.com.au/TheWiggles

eave the car at home and enjoy the stunning scenery that WA has to offer. Kick back, relax and discover regional WA on a luxury road coach or train.

The new and improved space is well shaded with a nature playground for kids to explore. Lots of open space for children to run, play and use their imagination. The playground also means a brand new home for Alfie, the resident rabbit.

Making travel even more affordable, Transwa can take you and your family to more than 240 destinations across WA including Kalbarri, Jurien Bay, Kalgoorlie, Esperance, Albany, Margaret River and Bunbury.

Opening up the yard encourages children to mix with other age groups and allows siblings to play together – all under the guidance and supervision of qualified Goodstart educators.

Your kids can ride for 50% of the regular fare, and when you travel as a family with between two or four children that discount increases to 75%. That’s a huge saving! Simply enter the promotional code ‘family’ when making your booking and let Transwa be your family’s personal people mover.

‘Children have embraced it with awe and curiosity and parents have commented on how wonderful it is,’ said Lorraine, Goodstart Centre Director. To arrange a tour at a Goodstart Early Learning centre near you, simply call 1800 222 543 or visit goodstart.org.au

Keep kids cool

• Ensure cars are locked and the keys are out of reach of children to prevent children gaining access to the car • Always check the car before you leave it

A

s we move into the warmer months, it’s important to remember how dangerous it can be to leave a child unattended in a parked car.

On a typical summer’s day the temperature in a parked car can be over 30 degrees hotter than outside and, unfortunately, children do not tolerate heat well. This could lead to dehydration and other health related issues. Here are some things you can do to reduce the risk of leaving children unattended in a car:

Kidsafe WA has also developed car park signs, which can be purchased by organisations to install in local car parks. The car park signs act as a reminder to community members to take their children with them after parking the car. Let’s work together to raise awareness and reduce the number of children left unattended in parked cars. For more information about the Do Not Leave Children in Cars campaign, or to order car park signs, contact Kidsafe WA on 6244 4880 or visit kidsafewa.com.au

• Plan to complete quick jobs when you don’t have children with you • Seek service stations where you can pay at the pump

lthough the FIFO scenario can create a lot of financial positives for families, FIFO lifestyle and industry pressures can present significant challenges for families and partners with parenting arrangements. A lifestyle promoting prolonged separation from loved ones, longdistance commuting, lengthy work hours and isolation can impact on relationships and family dynamics. HBR Family Lawyers has assisted many families in this scenario. HBR Family Lawyers can assist in all areas of family law, including drafting and advising on Binding Financial Agreements (pre-nups) to help protect assets, and assisting with the review and negotiation of parenting arrangements, should work schedules change.

HBR Family Lawyers strive to swiftly resolve matters through mediation, without the need for litigation (where possible), aiming for the best outcomes in a timely manner and without significant cost.
