Child development program creates a bright future CMAS WA was launched in WA on June 21, 2014 by respected Mayor of Bayswater Mr Sylvan Albert. UCMAS stands for Universal Concept of Mental Arithmetic System. As the name suggests, this unique program takes kids in the magical world of numbers.

U

It’s a child development program that was pioneered in Malaysia in 1993. Today they have over 5000 centres in more than 54 countries worldwide including the Canada, United States, United Kingdom, Spain, India, China, Australia and the Middle East. According to the PISA report issued 9 months ago, Australian teenagers’ education is worse than 10 years ago. Australian teenagers’ reading and maths skills have fallen so far in a decade that nearly half lack basic maths skills and a third are practically illiterate. On the world ranking OECD AVG BASIS Australia are ranked 19th in Maths, 16th in science and 13th in reading. Australia’s maths performance dropped the equivalent of half a year of schooling between 2003 and 2012. So as a responsible parent, it’s our turn to seriously think about our kids and get them enrolled in UCMAS courses before it is

too late. UCMAS promotes whole brain development using the Abacus as a tool and mental maths as a medium. The program consists of ten levels that are each approximately 3 to 4 months in duration. UCMAS is a well organised and planned approach that helps the learners take baby steps towards a bright and scintillating future. UCMAS aims to challenge your child in new ways while cultivating creativity, multitasking and time management skills. It boosts brainpower and improves your child’s maths grades and overall academic performance. Above all, this unique program equips the young generation with the skills they need to improve overall academic achievement and to confidently meet the challenges of life. They have brand new centres operating all over Perth including Morley, Riverton, Canning Vale, Carramar and Winthrop, all taking registrations. More centres are coming up all over Perth. Divorce – what you need to know By Alison Brooks, Solicitor, Kott Gunning n Australia, divorce is a separate and distinct issue from property or children’s matters, and it is usually a relatively simple and straight forward process.

I

Divorce is available on a no-fault basis, meaning that as long as some basic criteria are met there is no need for parties to prove the other was unfaithful or give reasons as to why they want a divorce. Basic criteria – at the time of filing for a divorce: • At least one party is required to have Australian Citizenship, be domiciled here, or have been living in Australia for the previous 12 months. • You need to have been separated for more than 12 months. • You will need to satisfy the court there is no reasonable likelihood of resumption of cohabitation. If parties have been married less than 2 years (from the marriage to the date of filing the Application), they must attend counselling with a view to discussing reconciliation. If they still want a divorce, they must provide a certificate proving they attended counselling before the Family Court will accept their application.

In some cases, parties can regard the marriage as over but continue living together for a period of time. In these cases, if it has not been more than 12 months since the parties physically separated, it will be necessary for further affidavit material to be filed providing evidence of their specific circumstances. In other relationships, parties may separate and reconcile several times before their final separation. It is possible to reconcile for a period of up to 3 months after an initial separation and still include the time the parties were initially separated as part of the 12 month separation period. However, where parties separate then reconcile for longer than 3 months, they will have to recommence counting their 12 months from the date of the subsequent separation. Where parties obtain a divorce and have not finalised division of their property, they have 12 months from the date of the Divorce Order to seek the Family Court’s assistance with this.
