Phonics approach adopted by Government for all schools
F
inally, the government has acceded to the massive amount of research and mandated phonics as a main component of all literacy programs for young learners. This will make a huge difference to the lives of Australian children and they will be more able to read, spell and write at correct age levels. Victoria Carlton from International Centre for Excellence has been using this approach for over 20 years with great success. Students are taught with the Jolly Phonics, Jolly Grammar methods at all schools and education centres using the Victoria Carlton approach. Victoria also provides training and support for schools around Australia and South East Asia. “Children taught with these methods start to make some sense out of English, says Victoria. “We do not have the easiest language to master and these methods help all youngsters to achieve success. These methods are used with all children and children who do not have English as their mother tongue also make huge progress. It is particularly effective for children who learn differently and struggle to keep up with their peers.
Victoria has just returned from the Jolly Phonics Trainers’ conference where specialised teacher trainers from all over the world come each year to share their research and ideas. This program is in nearly every country now and wherever it is used the results are very positive with most children achieving literacy levels 1220 months ahead of their year level. “We use this systematic, structured approach with all students- 2-12 years, says Victoria. Even our Pre-school children (2-5 years) know their sounds and are well ahead of expected levels. Victoria Carlton can be contacted for more information about her programs and training. Bookings are available for her Pre-School, Primary and High School Programs by calling 9271 4200 or emailing iceinfo@iinet.net.au There are two licensed centres in Perth using her methods - one in Bayswater and one in Cockburn Central. Many schools in WA have also been trained by Victoria. Teachers and schools who would like to know more about the Victoria Carlton licences are invited to contact Victoria and arrange an interview.

EMAS focuses on whole brain development. Our aim is to integrate and make both hemispheres of the brain work. When learning how to play piano or ride a bike we use our left side of the brain to do the logic part. After a lot of practise this information is stored in the right hemisphere of our brain (the photographic and creative part). This means that once it is stored in our right side, the information can be recalled much faster and without having to think about it. SEMAS are teaching children to do math calculations with both sides simultaneously. They will be doing a calculation and seeing the calculation. With practice you’ll be able to take away the abacus and the student will be able to recall the images of the abacus, thus doing an image calculation. Students start with basic maths to train the brain (that has been using only the left side to do calculations) to use both sides of the brain. Once the brain is used to this method it will become ‘bored’ and will seek new challenges. The ultimate aim of Soroban Education is the mental calculation (ANZAN). This means
the image of the abacus is brought to brain and calculates mentally without seeing the abacus. It can be seen how the neurological cross movements happen when both left and right side of the brain are used. This program use numbers and maths, but is not limited to maths. You’ll see growth in other subjects at school as well and your child will foster a love for maths. It enhances the Photographic memory and develops listening skills, insight, creativity and also improves concentration, imagination, speed and accuracy, self-confidence and problem solving. Most importantly SEMAS establishes a strong foundation. SEMAS, the recognised organisation authorised to conduct Soroban Courses on the Japanese concept is approved my Miyajima Institute of Soroban Education and Japanese Abacus Association, Members of Osaka Chamber of Commerce, Japan. Semas is the only organisation from Australia admitted as a member of GASJMA (Global Association of Japanese Soroban & Mental Arithmetic). www.semasacademy.com.au
