Say
Women’s health on the brain
yes to dairy goodness
A
By Nicole Ohm, Mum & Manager at Brownes Dairy
A
favourite book in our home when the kids were little was Yes, Yes, No, No by Leslie Patricelli. This lovely little story brings to life the constant dilemma we have as parents about when to say yes and when to say no. Often the correct response is obvious (no, you can’t eat the cat biscuits and yes, I’d love a cup of pretend tea) but hands up if, like me, you have been guilty of using no as a default response? How regularly does a rogue no escape from your lips before you have even consciously and rationally thought about the request?
A Hint Of range is the first of its kind in WA – natural fresh milk with a hint of real chocolate, strawberry, banana or vanilla. No added sugar, sweeteners or nasties like colours or flavours. Simply pure WA milk, plus love. Finally, a product that is an easy yes. Brownes Dairy A Hint Of offers the perfect win-win situation. Your kids get to enjoy a yummy dairy treat and you’ll know that you have smuggled some dairy goodness into their day.
Women are living busier lives than ever before and studies show that this is affecting their physical and mental health. Increasingly, women lack the time to make a healthy lifestyle a priority.
Brain-based therapies are becoming increasingly popular as people are looking for safe and effective alternatives to drugcentred treatments. Some of the therapies offered at The Perth Brain Centre have been featured in Dr. Norman Doidge’s internationally best selling book The Brain’s Way of Healing, the sequel to his equally popular book The Brain That Changes Itself.
Unfortunately this is reflected in statistics, which show that women experience problems like anxiety, depression and migraine much more frequently than men, especially during the years that they are raising their family.
The Perth Brain Centre has been helping women with problems like anxiety, depression and migraines for over 10 years. They use the latest in functional
There is no area more ripe for a mother-child standoff (and even parent to parent standoff) than the topic of making wise food choices.
As a mum at Brownes Dairy, I am excited to share that we have made a delicious new drink that both you and your child will say yes to. Brownes Dairy
brain imaging to direct drug-free brainbased treatments such as Neurofeedback Therapy (brain-wave training), TransCranial Direct Current Stimulation (brain stimulation) and Heart Rate Variability Biofeedback (stress management).
Research shows that problems like anxiety, depression and migraines can be caused by changes in the normal function of the brain. In the past, treatments have relied on drugs, but these days, people are often looking for alternative solutions.
Now I know that loving, consistent, boundaries – often reinforced with a no – will help shape my children, but lately I have been finding ways to say yes, even whilst setting a limit. And how good does it feel to say a whole hearted yes?!
We know how vital it is for our children to get their daily calcium needs. When they are little, milk is king and they have it with breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks. As their taste buds develop, it can get harder for us to make sure our kids are having enough calcium every day. In order for them to drink milk, it needs to taste delicious, which, up until now, has meant giving them sugary products.
s Dr. Jean Hailes: For Women’s Health, Australia’s leading and most trusted women’s health organization, says ‘If a woman is in good health, her family, community and the society around her also benefit.’
Women’s lives are more hectic than ever before and it can be too easy for them to put their own health last. As Dr. Jean Hailes says ‘The health of those we love starts with us. By investing more time in ourselves, we are better able to look after the ones we love and care about.’ For further information on how brain-based therapies can help you or someone you know, please contact The Perth Brain Centre.

Keeping kids safe on our roads
U
nfortunately, too many children are being injured on Western Australian roads, which is why road safety is a priority area for Kidsafe WA. Children are more at risk of injury on the road compared to adults because of a number of developmental, environmental and physical factors. Each year, over 1100 children end up at Princess Margaret Hospital Emergency Department as a result of a road traffic injury. Small-wheeled devices, such equipment as skateboards, rollerblades, scooters and hover boards, are of particular concern – accounting for 38 percent of all road injuries.
Visit the NEW Safety Demonstration site for tips and products to help reduce injuries at home.
• Make sure the brakes and locking mechanisms work before using the equipment.
To reduce the risk of injuries to children when using small-wheeled devices, the following measures can be taken:
• Ensure children wear bright coloured clothing so that they are easy to see. • Keep left and give pedestrians the right of way.
• Always supervise children near traffic.
140 Railway Parade, West Leederville
6244 4880
www.kidsafewa.com.au
• Make sure children use protective equipment such as helmets, wrist, knee and elbow guards.
• Teach children how to cross the road safely as a pedestrian and when using smallwheeled devices – Stop, Look, Listen and Think!
• Ensure children learn and practice how to use the equipment in a safe place away from roads, driveways and slopes.

Family businesses find their market
J
oe Saraceni, Manager of the Wanneroo markets, has helped many family businesses find their ‌ well, market.
‘I’ve always been around family businesses,’ said Joe, whose family owned and operated North Perth’s Vatese Bakery for the best part of 60 years. ‘So I’m a firm believer in starting small, setting realistic goals and then growing through passion, hard work and persistence.’ Joe believes that markets are the perfect testing ground for family businesses, somewhere where families can learn to run a business on a small scale. ‘Somewhere they can afford to experiment and learn in a community of friendly and likeminded business people – we’re all here to help’ Joe and Kim run market tours every

What is SEMAS and how does it work?
S
EMAS is a program designed to develop the right side of the brain using the abacus as a tool. Something so unique, it will change the way you and your children feel about maths. Their aim is to accomplish whole brain development; it’s much more than a mathematics course. The SEMAS classroom includes learners as young as three years old. SEMAS develops fast mental calculations and also improves creativity, memorisation and intuitive thinking. SEMAS students are able to draw upon the right-brain, which increases speed and accuracy.
SEMAS improves a wide range of skills that are needed in many areas. These include comprehension, concentration, listening, creativity and problem solving. Ultimately, SEMAS fosters a love of mathematics in children and boosts self-confidence.
FREE
To do this, students learn how to visualise the abacus in their memory, which is why calculations are able to be made more quickly.

Managing children’s behaviour in a positive way. With Dolly Bhargava
elf-regulation is an umbrella term used to describe a number of complex mental abilities that enable children to control their emotions and behaviour, engage in learning and interact positively with others. Selfregulatory skill development starts in infancy and becomes more sophisticated as children get older. Self-regulation is an important skill for success in school, work and life. In this article we will specifically look at the three R’s that adults can use to support the development of selfregulation skills in infants (from birth to one year’s old). In the October issue, we will look at specific ways of supporting development of self-regulation skills in toddlers.

Create a rhythm to the day, where activities occur around the same time everyday to suit your infant’s temperament. This will help provide order and structure to the day. Try and use clear specific words for objects, actions and routines e.g. ‘nap’ or ‘lunch’. It will help your infant to start recognising and anticipating activities, which will help lead to self-regulation.
signals. By consistently acknowledging, interpreting and responding to your child’s signals, it will help them make a connection between that signal and how it affects others. Remember, being sensitive to your infant’s state (e.g. hungry, tired, overstimulated) is important.
REPETITION WITH VARIATION Play activities, like blowing bubbles, playing peek-a-boo or singing nursery rhymes, often have a predictable sequence of events. Once you have carried out these activities several times, and your infant has become familiar with them, you can gradually interrupt the sequence by pausing and encouraging your infant to initiate. You can fill your pause with an expectant ‘yeah?’ or look at them with raised eyebrows. This sends the message to your infant that it’s their turn. Initially, any change in your infant’s signals should be viewed as an initiation. To learn more about supporting the development of self regulation skills, please refer to the workshops listed at dollybhargava.com

Science of Montessori Education
Education & Schooling NAPLAN results are out – now what?
W
herever your child sits now in their NAPLAN results, all you want to know is how to help them advance to the next band. After years of interpreting these reports, Janice McGuire at NumberWorks’nWords knows how to cut through the jargon and get students moving.
• Spark a child’s natural curiosity. When a child discovers something, this newfound awareness sparks new dimensions of interest in learning. The cycle repeats itself. • The home and classroom should be rich environments of materials and love. We work in partnership with parents in order to help provide opportunities for discovery. This creates a foundation for children to develop into creative and conscientious individuals.
An independent, face-to-face assessment with one of the professional tutors at NumberWorks’nWords will provide you with the information you need to help your child make progress. Backed up with their proven maths and English tuition, NumberWorks’nWords is so much fun that it doesn’t feel like learning. Call Janice at NumberWorks’nWords Subiaco on 9388 3727 to book a free assessment and introductory lesson. Member of the Australian Tutoring Association.

T
he term ‘kinder gartener’, meaning ‘children’s garden’, was coined by Frederich Froebel in 1837. While ‘kindergarten’ is now a generic term used to describe the collection of early learning programs throughout Australia, it’s Maria Montessori’s ‘casa dei bambini’ or ‘children’s house’ that continues to grow in popularity.
• The mathematical and sensorial teaching materials used in Montessori classrooms not only effectively convey ideas but are also objective by nature. Children choose to discover things on their own without validation while dedicated and specialist staff closely monitor their learning. Montessori children develop persistence and focus by working and learning independently. They respect the efforts and
space of others by not interrupting their learning. • Mixed aged classes create a sense of community as children socialise with both older and younger peers, just as adults do. Older children become mentors whilst younger children can learn through observation without age or grade levels being hindrances for growth and development. Finally, mixed aged classes allow children to grasp and understand the purpose behind their learning from the past, present and future. For more information about Montessori, why not book an appointment to observe a classroom, a comprehensive directory of Montessori programs can be found below.

What is bottle tooth decay?
A
Proudly brought to you by
Tooth decay in young children may occur when they are put to bed with a bottle each night over an extended period. This includes formula and any drink containing sugar. Over time, prolonged exposure to these types of drinks allows acids to break down the surface of their teeth. It is a preventable condition and can have a serious impact on a child's wellbeing. Please do not put your child to bed with a bottle. Allow them to finish their bottle before brushing or wiping their teeth and putting them to bed.

And then one day, Bambert decides to set his stories free, to send them out into the world on little balloons, in the hope that they will find a home. The stories contain instructions: whoever finds them is to return them to Bambert with a stamp from wherever they landed, so he knows where they should be set. But as each day passes, and no stories return, Bambert’s hope begins to fade. Will his stories ever find a home? Saturday 30 September and Sunday 1 October, 11am and 1.30pm, Octagon Theatre, UWA.
